Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened - an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers. Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters - and other Awakened - in a deadly battle of survival. What's worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect...
Where do i even begin. There was hype around Antarctica before i even began, to be honest felt a bit overhyped when i started this arc. The arc started with a bang, with Nephis waking up and the negotiations with Valor having gone awry, But the pacing quickly came down to a halt. We see a bit of slice of life with Nephis and her cohort in a club no less, then we see them attending a ball. Although i enjoyed the lighter moments of the story, It had to pick up it's pace. We then see Sunny leave NQSC on a train and reach a port where we are introduced to many characters. The setup needed to be done for Antarctica arc was huge and so things didn't click for me until the Irregulars reached LO49.
We meet Naeve on the same ship as Sunny on route to Antarctica. I had a pleasant surprise when we met Sky Tide and consequently see her in action against the Jade Queen. Shortly afterwards they are sent on a mission to rescue and deliver Professor Obel. We get some interesting lore drops of how the nightmare began which is never delved into again which is disappointing. After the insufferable mind hex, they travelled north to mount Erebus Field. On route, we witness non-stop action. Sunny has to protect the chain of refugees and fight the nightmare creatures at the same time. We really see him stretch himself in each encounter. These were some of the interesting fights I've seen Sunny take up. The fight with the two mobs of nightmare creatures on a thin sheet of ice, then fighting against the devouring cloud. We see him using Morgan's warbow quite a lot and it's nice to see him wielding another weapon with such confidence. I had my hands on top of my head when he decided to fight Fallen Tyrant Goliath. RIP Undying Chain. All the while, the corpse devourer was following and really annoyed me as he came when Sunny was the weak. Oddly enough the route from Erebus to Falcon was a blur. Not much happened although they had to cover a long distance.
The siege of Falcon Scott was the highlight of this Arc, probably the entire series. I cannot go into each and every fight as it mended into one continuous fight, The Terror of LO49 fight underwater was pretty interesting. If I'm not wrong, the talking skeleton which Nephis carried is a Sybil as well. The fight against the devouring cloud and finally the Goliath. It's heart wrenching to see how it all ended. By this point I'm too attached to Sunny's crew of Irregulars. Quentin is carried away by the Gate. Thankfully, Kim and Luster escape. Belle, Dorn and Samara were mercilessly killed by the Winter Beast. The monologue about conviction while burying his crew was an eye opening for Sunny, a much needed character development.
I adore Forgotten Shore but can't really deny Antarctica's ending. Wonder if any future arcs are this good, only time will tell.

Deffo my least fav volume, the talking durning the whole antarctica operation was mundane and it all spread for far too long. as much as i liked the fight with corrupted devils and terrors, especially the sneaky bastard who sunny failed to kill at LO49, were amazing, just the whole concept of helping in a frozen kingdom just took way too long (also nearly 100 chapters named the fall of falcon scott is funny lol)

Okay joking aside, definitely the best volume yet of Shadow Slave. Changes are here, for better or worst. Those who cannot keep up will perish. This book delves into what that has been lacking for a while now, growth.
For the last four volumes, we definitely saw Sunny experience many harrowing hardships, but those are personal battles that mostly affect his survival and those of his small cohort. Now, that's about to change. What will the experience of war that will definitely claim million of lives affect our jaded and selfish protagonist?
The prelude to the antartida expedition was entertaining and the first chapters of it were great, some mini arcs were a bit boring in comparison but overall this arc was way better than the second nightmare but far from Forgotten Shore.
Cassie's episode was nothing new but brutal. Why does she seems stronger that other diviners?

Its good but i would'nt say its the better than than the 2nd volume tbh none of the 5 volumes can be compared to the second volume but its just good just that am not that of a fan of antarctica arc though its good for the third time
Que carajos man, este libro es peak desde el principio hasta el final, sunny en antartica tiene un aura tremendo, me quedo con la frase "the devil came back, the titan didnt", los momentos como el terror de LO49, el "i don´t need convinction", "Bleeding is too pedestrian. So, I don't bleed"
Simplesmente, um dos melhores livros que eu já tive o prazer de ler. Essa ficção é uma obra de arte e, sem sombra de dúvidas, o melhor livro da saga até então.
Chapters begin to stall out a bit with a lot of the same themes being repeated over and over. However, the plot continues to be interesting once progress is made.
I enjoyed this arc so far the most. The despair the humanity shown by everyone was splendid also had some funny moments which were a breath of fresh air.
