I love this book. I read it at least once a year. Great story. Good ending. Wonderful characters.

Ich habe das Buch leider nicht beendet. Nach knapp 50 Seiten hatte ich einfach keine Lust mehr. Die Story an sich hört sich interessant an, aber der Schreibstil war langweilig.

Let me get the bad news out of the way first:
1) It is my opinion that a book is allowed one, maybe two, definitely no more than three uses of the phrase, "you see." This book has probably 50 of them.
2) If a narrator character ever entertained more insane suppositions than this one did in multiple instances, I don't even want to know about it.
3) If you prefer a hard copy of a book, like me, you'll have to go on a scavenger hunt because this one seems to be out of print. Also, the cover is incredibly ugly (made worse on my copy by some smears of what I hope is chocolate).
The good news is that this book is actually very enjoyable. The writing is expert, the mystery is mysterious til the end, the characters are fleshy and the World War II details are some I hadn't heard before.
I'd say the good definitely outweighs the bad. And if you want to borrow my copy (and you don't mind some unidentified smears), give me a call.

Можливо, цьому роману не вистачає витонченості, закінченості чи глибини, але кілька факторів таки заставили мене читати його з великим задоволенням! А саме: це сімейна сага з паралельними історіями різних героїв, де таємниці минулого тісно переплітаються з реальністю. В кінцевому результаті, ти сам стаєш частиною розказаних історій. Разом з Тільдою намагаєшся повернути справжнє кохання її життя, а з Ребеккою докопатися до істини. Правда найбільше пронизує зовсім не доля Дари, ядра всього сюжету, а Еріка, скаліченої дитини війни. Його намагання вписатися в навколишній світ і спроба виразити свою любов, відновлюючи покинутий сад, відгукнулися в моєму серці.

A friend recommended this love story/mystery by an English author. It reminded me of "Possession" by AS Byatt, but less literary and consequently easier to read (an essential when you're a mother of four trying to sneak in some reading while still making your toddler think you're playing with her.)

It took me 3 days to read this book. It is great.
In many ways it makes me remebered two book: "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield and "A Woman of Substance" by Barbara Taylor Bradford.
Like "The Thirteenth Tale" we follow a biographer, Rebecca, as she picks the pieces of her broken life at the same times she tries to piece together the life of Dame Mathilda (Tilda) and like "A Woman of Substance" we found strong women, capable of falling and the pick up the pieces of ther lifes and moving forward.
Mrs. Lennox gives a tale of love and courage and because of her I now know the works of another English poet, John Donne. So i leave here the quote that I believe that is the foundation of this book:
"I long to talk with some old lover's ghost
Who died before the God of love was born..."
Enjoy.

Wonderful nostalgia
Yet again Judith takes us on a nostalgic journey of love loss and survival integrating its twists and turns into the present day experiences of the character Rebecca. Lovely poignant story that identifies the preciousness of nostalgia and family memories and healing from them.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very well drawn and the way the book moved from past times to the present was very good. There were several elements to the story, Tildas tale, Rebecca’s life, Daraghs influence. I became quite engrossed in it till the last page.

Großartiger Roman über das Leben einer Frau im 20. Jahrhunderts, die als uneheliches Kind eines Dienstmädchen im Waisenhaus von ihrer Tante aufgegriffen wird und dadurch sich ein Leben den Kindern zuwendet, die durch Mangel an Liebe leiden. Sehr spannend erzählt.

War ganz nett. Keine schlechte Story, aber wenn man auf Seite 46 schon weiß wer auf Seite 267 miteinander schlafen wird, auch kein Knaller. Insgesamt extrem vorhersehbare Geschichte.

Ich lese immer dann ein Buch von Judith Lennox wenn ich mal wieder ein richtig gutes Buch zwischendurch brauche. Da mögen man selbsternannte Intelektuelle vielleicht schmunzeln über den Schund den ich mir da mit einem sonst selten erscheinenden Lesevergügnen zu Gemühte führe, aber Judith Lennox Bücher beinhalten immer (!) alle Dinge, die mir an einem Buch wichtig sind: vielseitige und 'runde' Charaktäre, eine durchdachte Haupthandlung, Nebenhandlungen mit Hintergedanken die sich auch auf die Haupthandlung auswirken, eine gute recherchierte bzw durchdachte Welt, in der die Geschichte spielt. Alles in allem: eine gute durchwebte Geschichte.
Es sind immer Geschichten über Generationen und Familien und meistens spielen sie zu Beginn des zweiten Weltkriegs in England. Diesmal auch ein bisschen in Deutschland und etwas in Holland. Und ehrlich gesagt: während ich das im Geschichtsunterricht permanente durchkauen dieser Epoche wirklich unterirdisch langweilig fand lerne ich hier sehr gerne was dazu!
Warum nur vier Sterne, wenn Frau Lennox mich doch sonst jedes Mal kriegt?
Ich konnte Rebecca, eine der beiden Hauptpersonen leider wirklich so gar nicht leiden. Sie nervt einfach. Das Buch ist immernoch klasse, aber zumindest die Passagen die aus Rebeccas Sicht erzählt wurden hätte ich echt nicht haben müssen... Aber gehörte ja zum Plot und kann man leider auch nicht einfach weglassen.
Die anderen Lennox Romane lasse ich nun erstmal wieder in meinem Regal und schaue sie sehnsüchtig an. "In ein paar Monaten dann...", denke ich mir und schiebe es trotzdem immer etwas mehr auf den nächsten Roman zu lesen. Irgendwann hab ich keinen mehr auf Vorrat und vor dem Tag graut mir wirklich sehr.

Starting in the year 1912 in England and spanning until current day, this book was rather a saga of families torn apart by a rape of a young maid by her wealthy master and the baby it produced, as well as the destruction and anguish of two world wars.
Now in her 80's, Tilda, employs Rebecca to write her biography, with the hidden desire that she might unravel one great mystery of the family. The story segues from old to current times, weaving a story of deception and pain. At the same time, Rebecca's story is also one of pain and hurt, as she continues to find her way as a young writer.
The characters are well formed, although there seems to be much jumping to conclusions on many of their parts, that only leads to more doubt and confusion in their relationships.
All the plot lines tied up neatly at the end, and not a page too soon, as this was a bit long at 474 pages.

I bought one of Judith Lennox's novels at a library sale as gnerational novels are often a good escape. Lennox is a gifted story teller- her characters are never cardboard and her novels encompass social issues in England's past such as suffrage and World Wars. In this book, a late 1990s biographer is asked to write the story of a benevolent older lady who is known for her good deads towards orphans and abused children. Little does the young woman know that she will uncover a nest of secrets, most with stings that bring up old hurts. Set within the years before, during and after World War II, Lenox draws you into the past and keeps you waiting for the next axe to fall.

I'm currently on page 258 of this book and although it's enjoyable I'm irrationally annoyed by the use of dike instead of dyke.
The author is writing about my home county of Cambridgeshire with places I regularly see but insists on using the American term of dike. As she is a Brit born & bred I have no idea why she would do this. It's definitely dykes in Cambs, not dikes
Every time I read the word it makes me want to throw the book across the room!

It isn't perfect literature, but it will keep you going until the very end. The writing avoids cliches, builds character in a pretty refreshing way, and will cause your emotions to take quite a hike. Definitely recommend it. And I think Lennox is one of those writers who will continue topping herself.
