How to plant and maintain a variety of living alternatives to imposing fences, from simple spot screens of shrubs and trees, to formal and informal hedges of various kinds, to colorful vertical gardens supported by trellises and wires.
Thorough, practical, and clear. Could be better organized and, as w/ a lot of good gardening books, there are not enough pictures of the plants. Some really great ideas in here though and some good visuals for the instructional sections.
Some basic information on how to plant shrubs and vines, and to care for them in a hedge. And then lists of plant varieties, with a short description, that might work well as a hedge or espalier.
This book isn't what I was hoping it was --- a guide to creating edible hedges to block animals in and out. But it was still useful as background reading. Read a summary of the most useful bits on my blog.
I have decided to grow an espalier apple tree. Chapter 3 of this book has become my bible. Great drawings and wonderful photos. My tree is planted and on its way!
