All I can say is that this is infinitely gayer (which I didn't think was possible) and infinitely creepier (which I also didn't know was possible) than the light novel, anime and the stage play combined. I love my little silly precious cats so much :D

3.5 stars.

“There’s nothing to worry about, boy. ‘The power of the ability decides the winner’. I, too, used to believe that when I was young. However, I was lucky enough to not have lost my life in exchange for discovering how wrong I was. So, in that sense, I feel sorry for you.”

Getting to see how Dazai and Chuuya met is incredibly fun.

First of all, the art of this manga is just perfect. It captures just how disquieting and twisted everything going on is. After all, both of them are nothing but children involved in an incredibly dangerous world. I am obsessed with it.

It comes as a surprise to no one to see both of these boys not liking each other upon first meeting. The level of animosity running between them right from the get-go, though, is somewhat surprising.

At the very least it makes for a very dynamic and interesting duo.

Of course, there is a big mystery that needs solving, as is often the case with Bungo Stray Dogs, but that does feel pretty secondary to the much more relevant developing relationship between these two very iconic characters.

Mori does feel all the menacing that his title should confer him in this manga, more than I've ever felt him before, and that is wonderful.

“For the Port Mafia, violence is only one of its premises. The essence of the Mafia is manipulating the rationality through any means.”

This book is so good! Easily my favourite of the spin offs I’ve read with the backstory flushing out Dazai’s story. Oooo I got chills when the doctor/boss/scary dude warned Chuuya in his office.

I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment.

Since the light novel we know that the both of them are 15, but the fact that they were children becomes so much more clear when you see them illustrated it's sickening.

I love the art style so much that i just want to eat it (:

I also love the sillyness of these characters and the story honestly its one of my favourite arcs of the whole series.

Getting to see Dazai and Chuuya in the past means that hey, we got to see one of my least favourite people and one of my favourite characters, but like smaller and more aggressive(?) twards each other! It's a great time

But otherwise, I think that the art style is amazing and the storytelling is great (i mean it's Asagiri (wrighter) and Hoshikawa (artist)) I just wish i could understand more of whats happening at the beginning it might just be me when im reading (cuz i cant comprehend sometimes) but it felt like it was going too fast(?)

We are at Moris's office, and Mori is talking about how "hey you, my accomplice, i need you to go investigate my friend chuuya and the old dead boss please thank you!" Then we're at Suribachi City, then Dazai gets kicked yada yada yada, but i want to understand why Dazai was with mori (besides the fact that he was his doctor a year ago) why is he still there in his office? Why does he know how to all of these things that a normal person should not know how to do? I get it. You might say he was the demon prodogy or something, but didn't he and Chuuya basically join the PM on the same day? AND WHY DID MORI CHOOSE DAZAI OVER ANYONE TO BE HIS ACCOPMLICE? Im just confused about all this. Sorry for ranting. i want to understand 😭

Ship, ship, ship!

I’m so onboard the Dazai-Chuuya ship you’d think I’m a sailor!

This manga was very similar to the anime, so nothing new really, but it was fun to revisit this part of the story.

Also, Fukuzawa foreshadowing!!

chapter 1
chuuya's neck is long af but that could jut be the specific art style for this one. mori in the manga is so cute ugh love that man sm. once again dazai's eyes are pure black. mori's eyes flip flop between pure black and bits of light hmmm. i wish they included the defusing bomb scene that'd be hilarious and it might endear the fans more to him.

chapter 2
can we get more of chuuya beating dazai to a pulp PLS. they really said how can we make dazai look as demonic and unhinged as possible.

chapter 3
the look they give rimbaud when he says he might freeze to death that's priceless. "i killed him and what of it?" omg SLAYYY.

chapter 4
seriously the art style is so macabre like that's the best way to describe it; imagine if bones had adapted that kind of art into their animation. i wonder how mori suffered all those years with skk under his roof even tho he's literally the og shipper. fellas is it casual to think about ur old friend and current rival fukuzawa when you see and form the 2nd generation of double black???

Dazai and Chuuya are my favorite characters so I knew going into this that it would slap, and it did slap. I'm literally obsessed with them, you don't understand how bad it is.😭

They meet when they are 15, with Dazai in the port mafia directly under Mori's leadership. Chuuya is with another rival group wrecking havoc until he gets grabbed by the mafia. Mori is intrigued and forces Dazai and Chuuya to work together on a case.

Mori the number one soukoku shipper I fear. "Only a diamond can polish a diamond"??? oh he was cooking.

This art is actually AMAZING. It's a different artist from the regular series and it goes so hard. The style is so harsh and even though manga is always black and white, this is even darker and it matches the vibe so perfectly. Dazai and Chuuya are just kids and you can absolutely tell here like oh my god. I again feel so bad for them like literally they were just kids.😭

I had fun with this! The art is beautiful, if sometimes confusing as to what's actually happening. But I really loved the style and the times when a scene was shown slightly inverted to intensify it. I absolutely adored how Dazai is essentially just a stick figure throughout with a mop of dark hair, pits for eyes, and a mouth always open. That pretty much sums him up.

This volume is just setting the scene for the plot of this arc and I think the introductions between characters were really fun. Mori has just the right air of mystery to him in his pages. Overall what was done plot-wise is nothing stellar, and as much as I love BSD it's more about the vibes, character dynamics and relationships, and overall absurdity for me than the plot.

I absolutely love the art in this series.

If you've seen the anime this is the same story, but the artistic style is different from the art in the original manga and anime, and I love that. It's a lot more stylized and flashy, and I think it adds something to a story that most BSD fans already know.

Also, Goodreads only has the Kindle edition listed. I think this is a new manga series that just came out in English last month, and I read the paperback, so Goodreads needs to update the system.

I can't wait for the second volume.

I LOVE THIS SO SO MUCH
The art is SO stylistic and really captures the creepiness of Mori and Dazai. Dazai is essentially a stick with big black eyes 😭
Theres so many really great scenes- especially showing the Sheep with actual sheep heads and everything with the old boss.

Seeing Dazai and Mori's first meeting was so sad 😭 he was soo small

Once again just as I said when I read the light novel it almost makes me sad that the anime adaptation is already out because the story in the manga and light novel are just so much richer and better than how the anime adapted it.

I’m only one volume in and I’m LOVING this adaptation so far! hoshikawa’s artstyle is gorgeous and so unique — not only is it perfect for bsd, but it also enhances the darker elements of the light novel and makes them infinitely more unsettling. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the story is adapted in future volumes.

so confused because I swear I wrote a review for this and it disappeared?!

anyways. I adore Hoshikawa's art style so much. They do such a great job of showing how creepy Mori/the old Boss are and also how young Dazai and Chuuya look. Dazai's eye is so big and black and empty looking 😭 I think they depict his mafia mentality so well.
