The runaway that Shy and Iko bumped into turns out to be a lot stranger and a lot stronger than they could have expected. They’ll need that help, of course, when the stranger turns out to have ties to the latest plot by the pesky villain types.

Man, Teru/Shy is great. There are some terribly believable moments of social anxiety here (my phone skills aren’t quite as bad, but boy was I feeling that one), plus her relatively innocent desire for friends, yet nothing that stops her from stepping up when she needs to.

The last section sees Shy coming to the fore like never before, ahead of what I presume will be a lengthy battle sequence, and it’s a strong moment of genuine growth for her, but also something that will undoubtedly be put to the test very quickly. It’s a good narrative thrust.

Most of this volume, however, is focused on the introduction of Ai, our runaway who also happens to be a ninja, and introducing a bunch of lore and backstory surrounding her. Which is a lot.

One thing I do appreciate is that Shy never lets Shy overwhelm Teru and it makes sure to keep her civilian identity in the mix between all the punching. So, before all the plot stuff, Ai gets to hang out with Teru and Iko and they get to be girls.

Okay, yes, they try and stuff some quick yuri bait in that really didn’t need to be there, but it’s mercifully one and done and possibly just some teasing. Possibly. The rest of it is pretty good, although Teru doesn’t seem to work too hard at protecting her identity sometimes.

It’s a good way to introduce Ai, mind you, and it keeps Iko in the story too, which is good. I’m torn on how necessary Ai is, her whole existence feels beyond overstuffed with the aforementioned lore dump, but it made for an engaging enough volume.

The thing of it is, most of the main cast hasn’t really done a whole heck of a lot yet. They’ve shown up for brief moments, but you can’t tell me we’ve plumbed half the depths with them that we could have. But, again, Ai makes a fun companion, so it nearly balances.

As usual, the villain group with the dumb name is throwing a spanner in the works and about to cause a big ruckus. I’m always a bit shrug whenever these dopes show up - the superhero stuff is always where the story is weakest for me - and I cannot even with the wonky design for America’s national hero (although it is blessedly free of cultural stereotyping).

But I like seeing more Teru having a real life and feeling like that’s something she wants to protect. That angle and her making friends is what keeps this interesting for me. The action’s okay, but never my big draw in almost any series.

3.5 stars - I think My Hero Academia has this beat out by a bit, though I’ve only read a couple volumes of that series, but I would rather read this just because I think Teru’s such an easy character to root for.

Now Teru must deal with a strange runaway girl, Ai Tennoji, and a shinobi stalking her, Tokimaru. Another attack by Amarariruku, this time much closer to home, and it's going to take everything the heroes have to stop them this time. Another fun, thrilling volume of Shy! It's good seeing Teru make some new friends and getting a larger-scale problem to deal with, working with a number of other heroes.
