I really liked a lot of this book -- the comraderie between the women who worked as cleaners in the hotel, the matter-of-fact but empathetic way the protagonist's kleptomania and abusive childhood were handled, the fact that the queer romance didn't cure or save her -- but there were drawbacks that make me hesitate to recommend this.
Namely: patronizing and ableist and tired depiction of someone who uses a wheelchair later in the book and an annoyingly repetitive emotional beat in the last 5+ chapters. I get it, she's not actually going to leave, but she's emotionally damaged and can't see she's valued and loved for who she is. It was like the book wanted you to believe she might just up and leave at the end of every chapter in the last quarter of the book. It got old and kind of soured the end for me.
Update: I devoured this story of a woman who grows up being abused by her mother (note: there are graphic descriptions of child abuse). She copes by keeping to herself and working as a cleaner in hotels/inns where she takes items from guests that they most likely won't miss such as tweezers, buttons, nail scissors, or small containers of make-up. However, it all changes when she starts working at the 21st hotel in her work history and discovers a group of friends (and a love interest) who replace her compulsion to steal. The characters are memorable and the story of finding a family not related by blood is affecting.
I highly recommend this book for readers who loved "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman, "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman, and "Remarkably Bright Creatures" by Shelby Van Pelt.
Thanks to the publisher for the advance reading copy. To be published in May 2023.
A heart warming and utterly unputdownable read filled to the brim with loveable, larger than life characters I couldn’t get enough of—especially protagonist Noelle, who’s such an endearing character that I wanted to root for in-spite of her kleptomaniac tendencies.
Following Noelle, a friendly (if light fingered) hotel cleaner who is preparing for her new job at her 21st Hotel where she plans to enact her well rehearsed routine: impress and endear the staff, steal as many inconsequential items as she can from guests and move on before anyone starts to suspect her.
But things are different at The Magnolia (her 21st Hotel), as Noelle (for the first time) has started to form genuine connections with the other cleaners, a tight knit group of welcoming women who support one another and makes Noelle feel like she finally has a place to belong.
I absolutely LOVED this! Having spent the past month reading quite few emotionally intense reads I wanted to start off April with a slightly lighter read and Noelle’s life affirming (and found family-esque) journey was just what I needed.
It’s told entirely from Noelle’s POV and shifts between the present day (at Hotel 22) and her past recollections of both her (not so perfect) childhood and her time at all 20 of the previous hotels.
I feel I should also mention there is scenes of child abuse and neglect in some of the flashbacks which definitely made me understand Noelle (and all her eccentricities) a little better.
I was soo absorbed by Senta Rich’s beautiful writing style and really enjoyed how vivid and realistic the conversations and dialogue felt. The tender exploration into the lives of not only Noelle but the women around her, also helped give a voice to the overlooked, overworked and under appreciated cleaners—who are always seen but never heard.
And their stories are just as vibrant, compelling and unforgettable as Noelle’s (like Gaby, struggling to come to terms with her son’s drug addiction or Mali, who won’t let her OCD get in the way of her plans to become a manager someday.)
Overall, an absolute stunner of a book that’s perfect for fans of the found family trope and themes of friendship as well as strong, emotionally complex (female) characters you’ll love almost instantly.
Also, a huge thank you to Random Things Tours and Bloomsbury for the incredible proof copy.
Eina sau, kokia ištempta pradžia… Man buvo per daug to pasakojimo apie kiekvieną viešbutį, kiekvieną sutiktą žmogų ir pavogtą sraigtelį. 😖
Noelė tikriausiai keisčiausias mano kada nors sutiktas personažas. Ji tobula darbuotoja, galinti asmenybę pakeisti akimirksniu, matydama ko reikia darbdaviui. Ji tyli, neišsišokanti, gerai atliekanti darbą, tad niekas net neįtaria, jog ji gali būti atsakinga už dingusius daiktus. 🙃

The Magnolia is the 21st hotel that Noelle has worked at as a cleaner. Stealing small, meaningless things from hotel guests is her specialty; it gives her a feeling that nothing else does. As soon as she starts a new job, she gets the other cleaners to like her so that they won't believe she would steal from a guest. As soon as a guest claims that something is missing Noelle puts her notice in and moves on after a couple of weeks. No one ever believes that she stole anything and her excuse for leaving is always a family emergency.
However, when Noelle lands the job at the 5-star Magnolia Hotel something is different. She begins to feel a part of the staff; she's never had a friend before. As the reader learns about Noelle's backstory, we see why she's such a loner. But these people are "her people" and finding them might just change her life forever!
I enjoyed "Hotel 21". It is an original story with well-written characters. I can see this story being made into a Lifetime Movie. Noelle is not a character that you'll quickly forget.
Kiekvienas matys kitaip.
This was the sweetest story!! I finished this in a day because it was just so addictive. Noelle... bless her.... I just wanted to look after her. I'm so so glad she found friendship and happiness. She deserved to be so loved.
I felt so much emotion while reading this. An easy, heart-warming read that I absolutely devoured!
A very sweet story. Thank you so much to NetGalley for the opportunity to be able to read this. I can't wait to read more by this author!
**EDIT - I was assigned this book for Booklist! Yay! A modified version of this review will appear in its pages.**
My friend Robin recommended this book, and I loved it as much as she said I would. It's so well-written, a deep dive into the inner workings of the protagonist's mind. I would give a trigger warning for abuse, but if it's something you can handle, I highly recommend it. Readers of THE MAID will enjoy the hotel setting, and Noelle's trauma is slightly reminiscent of Molly's in that book (although this one is not a mystery).
Noelle has been cleaning hotels for years--but she always leaves them quickly. She has the urge to steal from the rooms she cleans. Once a guest notices, she's out of there. She usually takes things that the guest won't miss, but if she's ready to go, she'll take something more expensive. When Noelle arrives at Hotel 21, she's immediately itchy to start filching. But the staff of Hotel 21 is different--particularly Phil, who draws Noelle in right away. Interwoven with the story of Noelle's new friends is her back story and the trauma imposed by her own mother. I loved the dynamic of the cleaners and how Noelle grows over the time she spends there. I also loved how bonded they were with each other and the depiction of service workers as real people. Too often they are dismissed as simple labor, but what they do has so much value.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Random Things Tours.
Hotel 21 is an absolute heart-warming read with some unforgettable characters. We follow Noelle, who works as a cleaner in hotels. Noelle is just about to start work in her 21st hotel and is preparing to enact her usual routine - get staff to like and trust her, pilfer random insubstantial items from guests and move on to her next hotel. But once she starts working at this particular hotel, things become different for her. She starts feeling like she belongs and actually bonds with other members of staff. The women are not only welcoming towards Noelle, but they support each other and have each others backs. Noelle, for the first time in a very long time, begins to feel accepted and that she may have finally found her place and her people. Noelle has a heartbreaking back story of abuse and neglect at the hands of her mother shown within flashbacks through the story. This was cleverly done to not only explain why Noelle is the way she is but to help you understand her more, too. If you're a lover of found family, supportive communities, and unforgettable characters, you need look no further than Hotel 21!
This was a standout character driven debut novel about a Scottish kleptomaniac hotel cleaner with a troubled past who is constantly on the move to avoid getting caught. Part con/heist novel, part moving dysfunctional family drama, Noelle is a character I won't soon forget and this book is perfect for fans of The maid by Nita Prose. It was also excellent on audio narrated by Jessie Cave. Many thanks to @prhaudio for a complimentary ALC in exchange for my honest review!
2,5/5 No nie wiem.
*Thank you to Bloomsbury for sending me an advanced copy of this!*
This book is something I’d describe as the perfect average contemporary bit of fiction. Like, it was enjoyable enough and had enough plot that I absolutely devoured it in two days, but there are still bits I’d improve and it wasn’t life changing. But it was very solid in terms of being a middle of the road book, something your mom would definitely enjoy reading on her holidays. Or maybe not, it’s a bit bleak at times but it does have a nice hopeful ending!
In terms of writing it was nothing showstopping, but I also think we did have a good foundation and it was extremely easy to read and felt accessible and engaging. I really enjoyed them premise of the book and how the plot was executed, I haven’t read anything I can think of with a similar premise so it was nice. Her backstory was somewhat predictable but it fit in with the emotional turmoil she seems to go through and explains some of her behaviour, so it made sense in that aspect and wasn’t unnecessary. This one was something a little bit different for me and I must admit, I did like it. It was paced really well which meant I was flying through the chapters, and it consistently had enough going on that it never got too dry.
The characters were the real highlight of this book for me, and I loved the way it focused on friendship as the key to healing. Seeing a solid knit female friendship form and being the outcome of the turbulent story was really nice. I will say however that I wish the characters had a bit more personality to them and that they were fleshed out a bit better. We don’t really get much on page development for any of them which is a shame and made them come across a little two dimensional. The almost romance arc came a little bit out of left field and I didn’t really know what to make of it, but I loved the fact that it was wlw. Very unexpected but always a pleasant surprise to see in a book!
I wish we went more into the kleptomaniac aspect of this book. We kind of start with it, but then it drifts off into nothing. I think it was a kind of random aspect that never really had any solid justification for me, and I do wish she was taking things more interesting just to spice things up. It got a little repetitive the way her conquests were described too which made that element a bit tedious to read when it was the same all over again. I think this book having been a small montage of hotels leading up to this one with intermittent chapters of her childhood, reaching its climax in the present day and the story progressing from there might have made for a better read? It does sort of adopt this concept, but the structure was a little messy and could’ve been more engaging for me.
This was a quick little enjoyable read that took the reader on quite the emotional journey. Glad I picked it up.
I picked up Hotel 21 at Barnes & Noble randomly— no expectations. Next thing I know, this book has my curiosity! At first, I was like, “Why is she stealing stuff that even Goodwill might decline?” But as I continued, the trauma and the bad history with her mother hit and everything made sense. She had different personalities, a quick exit strategy for any drama. She had more escape moves than a magician and honestly, I respected the commitment. By the end, she actually stayed long enough to make real friends… shocking me and herself lol
A charming and page turner book that hard to forget. This book is much better than I expected it to be. Telling us a story of Noelle, who is suffering from Kleptomania and child abuse from her mother, have been moving to various workplace after succeed of stealing some of the guest's items. As soon as she starts a new place, she gets the other cleaners to like her so that they won't believe she would steal from a guest. As soon as a guest claims that something is missing Noelle would puts her notice in and moves on after a couple of weeks. No one ever believes that she stole anything and her excuse for leaving is always a family emergency. But after arriving at 21st hotel, her 'stealing' job become much more difficult after meeting her co-worker that are different from others at her previous hotel.
Found Family Troupe ✅ Great Character Development ✅ Short read ✅ Charming side character ✅
Hotel 21 is definitely an enjoyable read, as someone who love found family troupe, this book is definitely something I would love. It did not disappoint. It accurately represent kleptomaniac, OCD and how trauma can also affect their disorder condition. I love Noelle character, definitely a character that you cannot hate. She's likeable despite on what she did, not to mention the side character is so funny as well. My favorite would be Gaby and Mali!! I loved the dynamic of the cleaners and how Noelle grows over the time she spends there. I love how she did admit that she love being with them. aaaa so precious!! I also loved how bonded they were with each other and the writing itself makes me feels the cleaners as a real people.
Its an easy, sweet and heartwarming story despite the trigger warning, Child abuse. And I have to mention that the child abuse depiction is quite graphic, so beware! I feel like if you love A Man Called Ove and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, you would also love this book as well.
I think this book is written well but the genre is just not for me. The characters have so many layers to them and they seem fun but I just couldn’t get involved in the story. Noelle came across as very young and naive, especially when she thinks she’s in love straight away.
All in all, not for me but if you like this kind of theme/genre it definitely has the bones of a good story
I raced through this book I couldn't put it down. It was well written with a captivating storyline and well developed characters who I loved. I found that it was hopeful at times and emotive at others but whatever emotion it was making me feel, I loved it.
Autorka brawurowo sięga wstecz, odsłaniając nam młodość bohaterki i burzliwą relację z agresywną matką.
Dodatkowo, mentalne powroty do poprzednich miejsc pracy, którymi autorka nas obdarza, wnoszą do powieści dodatkową głębię.
Senta Rich z sukcesem wkłada kij w mentalne mrowisko, tworząc historię pełną napięcia i wzruszeń.
This was the sweetest story!! I finished this in a day because it was so addictive. Noelle... bless her.... I just want to look after her. I'm so so glad she found friendship and happiness. She deserved to be so loved.

A very beautiful story. Thank you so much NetGalley for the opportunity to be able to read this. I can't wait to read more by this author!
