A grieving English teacher. A handsome actor. A new start with fresh possibilities...but the past is in the way
Two years ago, Elana Jeffries lost both loves of her life in Boston. Now she is starting over in beautiful Seahaven, located on the idyllic Maine coast and conveniently close to the home of her brother Carlos. Leaving Boston is difficult, but Elana--a dedicated high school English teacher--finds sanctuary in a renovated apartment building owned by the mystical Kit Gilmore, a longtime and beloved Seahaven resident who has also known devastating loss. Her illusions of happily-ever-after were shattered in Boston, but a fleeting romance with a high-spirited, talented young actor offers Elana another distraction and something else entirely: a glimpse of her former self and a flicker of hope that indicates happiness may be on the horizon again.
I've been writing stories and novels since the sixth grade when I was assigned to write a short story and instead turned in a 40-page novel about a little girl who stumbles on an underground cat colony! My English teacher (thank you, Mr. Ballantine!) was so impressed, he sent it to a publisher. The publisher did not respond, but Anne Marie decided right then and there to be a Writer (note the capital W).
Flash forward 50 years and I am still writing stories and novels (among other things)!
I have published several books about the intuitive process of SoulCollage®, as well as my two unique cancer journeys. I am now focusing my creative energies on fiction, and you can read my FREE 50-page novella, All You Need is Love...and Lilacs just by signing up for my monthly author newsletter, Inky Blessings: https://AnneMarieBennett.com/newsletter
My women's novel Feathers in the Sand will float onto bookshelves 7/11/22. I am happily blogging about the process of publishing a novel on AnneMarieBennett.com and you can receive updates along with info about extra-ordinary give-aways via my monthly newsletter, Stories That Stir Heart & Soul (link above).
I live with my big-hearted, silver-haired, number-oriented husband Jeff in eastern Massachusetts (with extremely frequent visits to Maine). My daily journey is also accompanied by two beloved adolescent felines (Louis and Seymour) who grace our lives with love and excessive cuddling in their above-ground cat colony of two.
I received a copy of this book for free from the author for promotional purposes.
This was an incredibly touching story!
This book is the second in a series. I hadn’t read the first book, but had no problems understanding and following the story. This book can absolutely be read as a stand-alone.
The story was so moving; it even made me tear up at some points. The heart of it was centered on grief and loss. I loved how the book explored those topics. It emphasized the different types of loss (e.g. losing a spouse versus losing a relative) and how everyone moves on at their own pace and in their own way. The journey varies from person to person. I also loved the metaphor of sea glass and how it represents the smoothing of the rough edges of grief. Such a beautiful way of thinking!
As for the characters, I loved them all. They were all so sweet and endearing. My favorites were Aunt Kit and Ryan.
Lastly, I enjoyed the ending. It was open but not ambiguous, which I found fitting for the story and more realistic.
Overall, I recommend this heartwarming and emotional book with a soul-stirring message! If you or someone you know is currently grieving a loss, consider reading this book.
I so enjoyed my trip back to Seahaven Maine. Seahaven is actually a safe haven for newcomers and long time residents alike. This beautiful corner of the world is a nourishing and forgiving place to rest, grieve, heal and begin again.
Seahaven offered treasures from the sea, the most exquisite sunrises, delicious food, new friends and fresh starts. I encourage you to spend some time in this charming, seaside town.
I loved the relationship between Kit and Elena. They were friends, companions in sorrow and chosen family to each other. Each woman experienced a journey of life, grief and joy…alone and together.
I love sea glass and thanks to reading this lovely book, it now has new meaning for me.
This book, along with some genuine sea glass, would make a wonderful gift for someone special in your life.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Sea Glass Memories is the second book in the Seahaven Sunrise Series) but it can be read as a standalone. This is a story of second chances in love and life, a story of loss, love, healing and personal growth, where you will laugh, cry, and rule for the main character's happiness. With very well developed and relatable characters and a plot that feels real this book grabbed me from beginning to end. Along with the descriptions of the small fictional town of Seahaven Maine which plays also as a big character in the story, this book will touch the emotional fibers of your heart. Can't wait to read the following book in the series.
Book 2 in the Seahaven Sunrise series. I was eagerly waiting for the next installment. Ann Marie Bennett has a way of writing about painful experiences and life changes, in a way that brings light and perspective. Elena Jeffries has suffered tremendous loss. This is her journey to rebuild and discover herself, with a little help from the people of SeaHaven.
Book 2 in the Seahaven Sunrise series is a stand alone novel that doesn't require you to read book 1 in order to read it. Although certain characters are featured in both everything you need to know is contained here.
A beautifully written love story about recovering from loss and dealing with grief. I thoroughly recommend this series so far.
This is my favorite book from this author yet. Both Elena’s & Aunt Kit’s journeys through grief were so relatable and inspired hope. I wish Seahaven was a real town, because I would definitely love to visit. I also really enjoyed all of the characters in this novel and hope I hear more from them in future books. Anne Marie Bennett aims to write books that stir the heart & soul, and she has done just that with Sea Glass Memories.
Sea Glass Memories is a story of grief, loss, healing, and finding your way back to yourself. Elana moved to Seahaven, where her brother lived, got a job as an English teacher., and this seems to be the place she is meant to be in. She started to go to the local grief support group, and saw moments of feeling like they were lifting her up. She gets distracted while helping with the school play, having moments of seeing herself before grief, and she was asked to help on the school play. She got distracted, and notice that she was moving forward, she sometimes smiled, laugh, and was happy. She learned why the local grief group had sea glass in a basket. This is part of Elana's journey, Anne Marie Bennett, brings out the emotions, the feelings, of going through grief, and everyone has to find their own path making it through. I received an ARC from KaleidoSoul Media through NetGalley.
This is the second book in the series, but you don’t need to have read the first one to read this one. It’s a great view into the struggle of grief with depth and emotional yet lightness and hope. I always love the coastal and beach vibes in this author’s books. A great read for any time of year!
Sea Glass Memories, book 2 in the Seahaven Sunrise series, introduces readers to Elana, Carlos’ sister, as she seeks a fresh start in the charming coastal town of Seahaven after experiencing devastating losses. As she meets the town residents and settles in, she works through her grief by embracing new experiences and opening her heart to love again. Throughout the narrative, sea glass serves as a meaningful recurring symbol of the grief process. While the focus is on Elana and the new people she meets, beloved characters from the previous novel weave into the story to the delight of the reader. Notably, Kit Gilmore, who is renting her place to Elana, becomes a big part of her healing process.
Anne Marie Bennett writes delicately about loss and the intricate process of grieving through multiple points of view. The writing has a smooth flow, and readers do not need to have read the previous novel to follow along. The author predominantly explores internal conflicts over external, making the emotional journey more profound. Although dealing with tough subject matter, the narration is light, and invites hope to the dialogue. I would recommend this to anyone familiar with loss or who is seeking a touching and optimistic perspective of this heavy topic.
Sublime Line: Sea Glass Memories, the second novel in the enchanting Seahaven Series, weaves a beautifully intricate tale of healing, love, and resilience.
Sea Glass Memories is a delightful read that is hard to put down! The book plunges right into the story, diving into Elena’s challenges - the loss of her husband and her desire to move away from the places that remind her of what she misses. We get a real sense of what her values are and why she has moved to Maine. Learning who she is and her emotional state gives the reader a solid context for understanding her story.
The author brilliantly waits until chapter 6 to introduce the backstory for Kit Gilmore, the wise elder, who was also a character in the first Seahaven Sunrise book. We are immersed in the “present” and then the story blossoms out into the context for how Kit came to evolve into her present self. Kit has a deep understanding of loss and uses her experiences to help others understand what they are going through and how to be gentle with themselves. As the author explains, Kit is a “woman whose losses have somehow made her more vibrant and giving instead of crushing her spirit.
This book stands alone, but if you have read Feathers in the Sand, you will catch up on the characters in Seahaven, as well as meet some new ones. Again, the theater and the beach play roles in the plot. Romance plays a part, but this is more a contemporary novel than a romance. I was sorry when the book ended, and I’m looking forward to book 3 in this series.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing a pre-publication copy for review.
I was a little conflicted about this after reading the summary because I thought, what else could even happen in the 200 pages of book that we don’t already know about, and I will say not much really took place for me. The book is supposed to be this feel good story of a woman working to move on from her grief and loss. When we meet Elena we know she has lost her husband and we keep getting hints about some other loss. Each time it’s abundantly clear what this loss is, and it wasn’t the big reveal the author wanted it to be in my opinion. Anyway.. after moving to this new town and being there a few days Elena meets Ryan, thanks to some meddling from others in the grief support group she attends. And suddenly she starts this relationship with this dude because he reminds her of someone… again the answer is super clear… But… after her first date with Ryan, Jonathan also expresses an interest in her and they become friends. Everything in this book felt super rushed… without giving too much away things just went from one person to the next with no real recovery period. I wanted this to be a story of Elena working to help herself through her grief, but that wasn’t what I got. Instead it’s a story where she needs men to help her heal and never seems to have an original thought. Overall, it just wasn’t for me and I’m sure it would be for some people but no thanks I won’t read anything else by this author again.
I've been waiting anxiously for this book to be published because I adore Anne Marie's writing. However, "Sea Glass Memories" far exceeded my expectations. I'm at an age where I'm experiencing more and more loss as the years go by. Starting with my late husband when I was only 28 years old, to my best friend to cancer a few years later, to more friends, and family, over the last few years, I feel like I've been through the wringer of life. Reading this book felt like reading the diary of someone else who has experienced great loss. Through Elena's journey (and the grief journey of Aunt Kit and others), I found hope, and peace, and joy. I was moved to tears several times (keep your tissues handy) and I was particularly touched that the characters were very open to hearing all grief stories - no one person had the "right" to grieve more than another. This reverberated with my own personal philosophy that "life is not the pain olympics," meaning, you don't have to have the worst pain in the world to be allowed to feel that pain. All pain, all grieving, is valid. In conclusision, if you are grieving any loss, past or present, or you are looking for insight on how to help a loved one with grief, Sea Glass Memories is a must-read for you. Thank you Anne Marie for this book that I will treasure forever.
Elana Jefferies suffered a major loss two years ago and has been struggling to put her life back together. She's now starting over in Seahaven, a small coastal town in Maine. There she'll be close to her brother, Carlos. Elena will be teaching high school English and hopes to keep a low profile, but she is asked to direct the senior class play where she'll be working with Jonathan, a popular history teacher. Elena is living in an apartment located in a Victorian house owned by Kit Gilmore known as Aunt Kit who teaches Elana that grief is like sea glass. Can Elana find another life, one without those she lost?
This is the second book in the Seahaven series and I loved it. The book's well-written and the characters are well-developed. The captivating story drew me in and kept me hooked from beginning to end. This is truly an emotional story that'll have you in tears in places and laughing out loud in others. I loved Elana and her path through grief as well as how she connects with others and the way that changes throughout the book. I enjoyed this book very much and am really looking forward to the next one. I highly recommend both book and series.
“Sea Glass Memories” is a book which really brought forth a variety of emotions from deep within me, bringing both tears and a smile to my face. With its beautifully crafted story, and relatable characters, it tells us that it is okay to grieve at your own pace. We all encounter loss at some point in our lives, and I can personally attest to just how much “Sea Glass Memories” really could help someone process grief. The main character, Elana Jeffries, experiences two devastating losses. With the encouragement of family, and her therapist, Elana moves to the seaside town of Seahaven, Maine. From there, we go on Elana’s journey of getting a fresh start in life, and even a second chance at love, which I felt inspiring. I highly recommend this book; especially if you are a fan of Anne Marie Bennett’s prior work as characters from her novel “Dragonflies at Night” make an appearance, which felt like connecting with old friends. That said, I’m looking forward to the next book in the “Seahaven Sunrise” series, called “Wish Upon a Sea Star.” You never know who will end up shaping the “Sea Glass Memories” of your life.
If you are looking for a beautifully written book/series then Sea Glass memories is for you. It is an easy read and is the 2nd in the Seahaven Sunrise series of continuing events in the lives of Aunt kit and the tenants of her rental property. The focus of this one is the acceptance of loss, healing and moving on with life and is the type of novel that once you start reading it; you have a hard time putting it down. Anne Marie Bennett writes so beautifully about real-life situations which are things that happen that we can all relate all to at one time or another and has provided us with yet another captivating story plot. And a plus is that it is set on the beautiful New England coastline and the series plot revolves around the realistic on-going life events many of the same characters from book one with new ones added in. In my opinion it is well worth reading as it incorporates Love, friendship, some drama at times and much more. In fact, all the author’s novels are wonderful and will not disappoint the reader.
This is such a powerfully moving and beautiful story of loss, shared grief, family, found family, and love. I felt like I was being wrapped up in huge comforting hug as I cried, laughed, and smiled my way through the healing process of several of the characters. The author writes about grief from different perspectives and experiences and takes us gently by the hand and leads us through our own interpretation of it. I felt and found some healing from my own losses and my heart smiled when I saw the name Finn as that is my miracle son's name.
I loved the descriptions of sea glass and the use of it in healing as well the many insightful observations of focusing on our own journey. There is joy and a feeling of smoothed edges, like sea glass, at the conclusion of the book and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a heartwarming emotional journey that feels like life isn't always what we expect to be, but is how we live it.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

A beautiful story about how we all grieve in our own way. And, it’s ok to take as much time as you need to heal and finally be able to move forward. I enjoyed getting to know the main characters. I have to say I loved each one. A perfect read for those wanting/needing to go through the feelings/emotion of overwhelming grief. This is my first book written by Anne Marie Bennett. I found her writing to be engaging and heartfelt. I look forward to reading more of her books. #shortbookthyme #annemariebennett #seaglassmemories #seahavensunriseseries #contemporaryfiction #yournextread #secondchanceromance #romance #womensfiction #seaglass #lossandgrief #romancebooks #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #bookreviewer #bookaholics #whattoread
The dedication of Anne Marie Bennett's novel, Sea Glass Memories: "For those who know firsthand that grief is the price we pay for loving. My wish for you is that you are able to honor and tend to the rough, bruised space in your heart that holds the memories of those you feel but cannot see."
Bennett fulfills that wish in her story of Elana and Kit who journey from grief to gratitude. Her spiritual maturity and wisdom are gracefully communicated in this story. Bennett's use of the sea glass symbolism is woven artfully through the story.
I was genuinely moved and cried several times as I read the story in one sitting. There were many poignant moments I didn't see coming, the sign of a skillful writer.
After 70 years of reading, I am rarely surprised with a story's plot points. I resent being emotionally manipulated in a heavy handed way ("Okay, cue the crying scene"). Bennett's heartfelt story-telling is original, subtle and respectful to the reader.
This book was such a good read. Grief is a terrible terrible thing. It can come out of nowhere and at any time. It does me sometimes. You never get over missing that person or persons. Believe me I've been there. I still miss my mom/grandmother. It's a big hole that will never be filled. Elena is a character that I've truly gotten to know and love. I enjoyed watching her grow into herself. A character that is heartbroken and flawed. My heart went out to her. I especially liked Aunt Kit. She's full of knowledge and strength. I learned a lot about sea glass. I've never found any on my part of the beach here in Daytona but I'd definitely love to. This is an un put downable nnovel. I ended up finishing it in one evening. This is a new to me author that I've enjoyed very much. 5 stars for leaving me full and satisfied. I highly recommend it. My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Having gone through the loss of a spouse myself, I could relate well with this story. Elena is about two years out from the loss of her husband, and is starting to find her new "normal". She's waded through enough of her grief journey to start living life again, not just functioning and going through the motions. I don't want to give away to much, but Ryan and Jonathan both represent different steps in that journey for Elena. They have a purpose in her life.
Though I enjoyed the Kit's parallel journey that happened years ago, her chapters seemed a bit random and too infrequent to me. I would have liked to see more of a pattern to them. That being said, I think they were well placed.
The concept of the sea glass and what it represents to the characters in the story is very poignant. The sea glass representation story and a few other spots brought tears to my eyes.
After the unexpected passing of her husband very early in their marriage, Elena decides to move from the familiarity of Boston to the small town of Seahaven in Maine where her brother lives to try and relieve her heartache and get a fresh start.
This delightful book weaves a heart-warming story of how the passing of time and unfolding of life can slowly - although sometimes painfully - soften even the sharpest edges of heartache and to once again see hope in the future after great loss.
Grief is a difficult topic, and hard losses will never be forgotten. But Alana’s story in ‘The Memories of Sea Glass’ demonstrates how courage in facing loss can nevertheless give way to seeing a future with hope. The quote by Kazuo Ishiguro as shared in the book sums it up well: “There was another life that I might have had, but I am having this one.”

If you've ever felt grief over the loss of a loved one, a pet, a friend - then this book provides a supportive and reflective outlet for the processing of that grief.
The story follows Elena who lost her husband in an accident two years ago and is processing this loss and grief. She moves to the small town of Seahaven to be closed to her brother Carlos. But life surprises her by opening doors to help her really understand who she is and what she's experienced, allowing for that deeper processing necessary to continue living.
I really loved this book and will hold it close as a recommendation to anyone who needs to be held and reminded how important every day is and that we need to appreciate every moment we have.
"Grief if the price we pay for loving." This special novel is written about several characters who are dealing with grief in one form or another. Everyone's journey through grief is different, and that's OK. This heart-warming story will leave you with the warm & fuzzies. I enjoyed an early version, and I love this finished version even more! Filled with uplifting comments, such as we are "meant to live this life, not merely exist in it" and "Life is not forever. Love is," you will thoroughly enjoy this story. You do not have to have read the first book in this series to read this one...but you will want to read that one, too! I am looking forward to reading the third book next year.
Sea Glass Memories opens our hearts to the grieving process while being enveloped in a small seaside town filled with kind, uplifting people. This book was so easy to read. The grief process itself is not easy, but the main character Elena has her supports in place to help her ease into the next phase of her life. I loved the use of Sea Glass as a metaphor for the grief process and the setting of the seaside town. I also feel like I can sense the joy of the writer as she chooses names for her characters and decides how to proceed with the story. What a joy to read such a clearly written novel that not only relates difficult life transitions, but also surrounds you with the potential of life beyond the challenges. Am looking forward to the next book in this series.
Anne Marie does a wonderful job of going through the grief process, not only with Elena, but Kit's story also. Elena's story of losing a husband 2 years ago, then having a miscarriage after the funeral (and she never got to share with Marc that she was pregnant) taking us through all the stages of grief. And Kit's first loss 40 years ago and the now recent loss of her would have been Mother-in-law, that she had remained very close with. A well written story of love, loss, grief, and life keeps moving on. Keep the Kleenex handy. I received this ARC from Anna Marie and an leaving my honest review voluntarily.

I am always amazed at the depth of passion, that Anne Marie Bennett writes her stories. Elena has suffered two losses within two weeks. She is starting over again, after two years with a new town, new job and new friends. With all of these changes, can she find herself again. Like the sea glass mentioned in the story, can the rough times in her life, be smoothed into a new life. Just a beautiful story, that will touch your heart and soul. I was given an ARC of this book by the author for an honest review.
I love this series. Contemporary Fiction isn't my usual go-to genre but I'm so glad I gave these books a try. This book, Book 2 of the series, can be read as a stand-alone, but it ties in with the first book, so I'd recommend reading both. It's cathartic, especially if you're dealing with a loss of your own. This is a beautiful story about second-chance romance after loss and the almost guilty feeling that sometimes overwhelms people when they try to move on from the past. This series reads as a Hallmark movie, to which they should seriously consider making it into one!!
This story about loss and grief and healing grabs your heart on the first page and never lets it go. Not only is each character developed into a person I would enjoy having for a friend, there is growth and change as the story progresses . Added to this, the lovely descriptions of scenery and the seaside town makes it sound so appealing, I want to move there. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I’m delighted to know that it is a part of a whole series. I’ll be busy catching up on her books !
