Another good volume! The dowager empress is a really good villain, it was nice to get to see more of Jeanne's Dragon, Tiny. Again, wish that there wasn't a major character being introduced in every single volume, and I just found out that the next volume is the last??? Like damn I thought this series would've been way longer and now that I know that Vol. 5 is the conclusion this whole series just seems waaayyyy too rushed and underdeveloped. Either way, I'll definitely be finishing this series (when I manage to get my hands on Vol. 5) and I hope this series won't end in me being disappointed

(4.0) This volume has many flashbacks that uncover Jeanne’s earlier life. There is more plotting and scheming by the Dowager Empress which may allow a repeat of the past.
King Robbins has returned to the capitol just as monsters attacked and Rue came to his rescue, but now she needs a magical healer. He decides to take her home to the palace, where his mother, the Dowager Empress, is deep into plotting her master finale. She’s just revealed she’s been keeping a dragon chained in the depths of the castle for ages, but others don’t know there’s also an old man down there. Through flashbacks we learn how both came to be there, and Jeanne’s role in all this. Will Robbie realize what his mother is up to in time? Meanwhile, when Jeanne learns Rue has been taken to the palace, she quickly decides she must go rescue her. She alone knows how cunning the Dowager Empress can be and what she would do with someone like Rue. Of course Mew and Flad can’t let Jeanne go on her own, but Mew also isn’t exactly easy to hide. Can they get to the capitol without incident? And Mew can’t help but have his fur ruffled; he knows Jeanne keeps thinking of someone named Tiny. Who is Tiny? And are they Mew’s competition?
You can tell we’re gearing up for the grand finale in the next volume. All the players are being assembled in one place. Secrets are coming to light, and Robbie is realizing he needs to step into his kingship but his mother may not let him do so. And Tiny (the dragon) and Rue (and Robbie) need to be freed from the Dowager Empress’s clutches. Oh, and a demon lord and his forces have come knocking at the castle for paybacks. I was quite happy to see Robbie waking up a bit in this one. And seeing Mew try to “hide” in a wagon while being miffed about Jeanne thinking about some other creature was humorous.
Notes on content: Language: None that I remember. Sexual content: None Violence: Past battles and massacres are related in which much of a people group were wiped out. (Minimal violence shown.) People and creatures are being held against their will. Ethnic diversity: It’s a fantasy world but the people appear to be European-inspired. LGBTQ+ content: None specified. Other: Greed and power have obviously gone to the Dowager Empress’s head.
This installment focuses heavily on Tiny—Jeanne's Guardian Beast dragon who has been lost for who knows how many years, revealed to have been —and on shoving Mew into a wagon, where he only grudgingly stays. Oh, and I guess on Robbie/Rue going to the castle and some drama with that.
This felt like such a fast read compared to the prior volumes that I don't really know what to comment on. It's not BAD, though a lot of the low plot, fast read parts is Mew fussing about having to hide in the wagon. It mostly feels like Just the Next Installment of a Long-Running Story. I do want to know how it ends, of course, but I also get the impression it will be another series that seemed good until it was over, at which point my library may need to be recalibrated for what will Spark Joy, and I'll pass along the series to find some new fans.
We'll see, though. It's still cute enough *for now* that I'll hang onto it and give a re-read when the whole thing is finished. (Sadly, I can't imagine this dragging out for much longer; it feels like Jeanne finding Tiny will start the Final Act.)
This volume focuses more in the drama than in the comedy aspect of the story, explaining the origin of the conflict and the past of the witch, but it still has its funny moments, like Mew being super jelaous and giving an attitude like only a cat can. It delves deeper in the relationship between the witch, the hero, and the empress dowager in a way that left me crying in rage. The expressiveness of the drawings and storytelling is truly beautiful, it makes you feel along with the characters. I loved the evolution of prince Robbins' character, you can see how he changes his views and becomes braver after meeting the rest of the characters, it was so satisfying seeing It ends in a very high point, and I don't know how they will solve everything in the next and final volume.
Mew's adventure continues as Rue and Robbin are entangled with the Dowager Empress narcissism and evil. This volume reveals more of the history behind the Dowager Empress' schemes, and she is every bit the classic villain, who would fit in with any old Disney princess movie. Meanwhile, Mew and Jeanne race to rescue Rue, and they punctuate the story with cute cat antics.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this volume, and as always, I find Mew to be adorable and Jeanne to be a sympathetic character to follow. It does seem like the next volume will be more action-packed as the Demon King bears down on the capital city, and all of our characters converge.
Then we have Volume 4 and Oh my gosh! This volume changed everything.
The series has always used flashback chapters well, but here? They answered so much and completely shifted my expectations for where the story was headed. I like that the series never reserved the flashback scenes to just one character. And we learn more about the whole 'gang' as the series develops.
The reveals were unexpected yet completely fitting. It’s the kind of storytelling that makes you want to go back and reread everything with fresh eyes. This series keeps delivering, and I cannot wait to see where it goes next! 5 Stars.
It’s odd how both nothing happened and a lot happened in this volume. On Jeanne & Mew’s (and Flad) side, not much happened as it was just them travelling for the bulk of it.
On Rue & Robbins’ side a lot happens with the Empress meeting Rue, dressing her up “ladylike” and then imprisoning her for her powers. Then just as Robbins stands up to his mom and says to imprison HER, the Demon King returns (in league with the Empress??) and… IT ENDS??
I wish we had gotten more story because with it ending on a cliffhanger it felt like an in between volume just bridging parts rather than its own part of the story. With it being the penultimate volume I expected more!

Mew is getting agitated, and Jeanne seems to suspect a lot of things, though unconfirmed until near the end of this volume. It will be interesting to see if the dowager empress and Tiny both recognize her. It seems the "Demon King" does, but he also may not be what everyone originally thought either given this prisoner's story he tells Rue. Hopefully more answers in the next book, though things continue to move slowly. Robbie at least finally shows some understanding and spine, but maybe too little too late.

I like how the story is slowly telling more about the character’s pasts and the villain is more defined now. It was hilarious with the scenes with Mew not successfully staying hidden in the wagon as some of the party go to rescue one of their own. I don’t want to give too much away but the identity of the mysterious man in the robe is revealed by the end of this book. I’m loving the unique character development for each of the characters and to see how they work together to support each other with their own unique struggles. Looking forward to see how this series is concluded.
More backstory in this one, I love learning about what brought things to this point. Sad stuff as one would expect. Nice to see that Robbie has a backbone and was able to stand up to his mother even if that was thwarted by the appearance of the demon king. Next volume will be a big battle it seems, looking forward to it.

How dare you treat a majestic dragon in such a manner!? I knew that Dowager Empress was evil. Robbie tries to assert his power but that doesn't go so well. And you knew that bitch would do something terrible to Rue. Meanwhile, Mew in the covered wagon is hilarious! But then Mew being jealous of Tiny (the dragon) is kinda sweet. I hope Jeanne is able to explain in the next book.
These volumes go so quick, leaving me craving more. TINY!!!!!! The Empress pissing me off, making me scream at the book. Also the Demon King!!! Looking like Malleus from Twisted Wonderland 💕 Also what they did to Rue!!! Also Mew still not letting Flad have the soft fluffy. 😆
The tension built up in this volume will have you waiting for volume 5 restlessly. The silliness of Mew, the depth of the villainy, and the themes of bravery and jealousy that were covered in this volume were great. And still as sweet and silly as ever. Can't wait for the next one!
this was another fantastic volume. I love the amount of backstory we get here, it really makes everything tie together and work. it feels like the plot is only just starting and I can't wait to see where it goes.
Ce tome était un peu moins drôle, et un peu plus triste et grave que les précédents, et pose beaucoup de nouvelles questions laissées en suspens à la fin du tome... Je vais vite lire le tome 5 pour découvrir le dénouement de cette belle histoire !
Doesn't feel like quite as much content in this one, as it is drawing the story together and seemingly getting ready to bring things to a conclusion in Vol 5. Some of the story seems a little more forced (old man in prison). Looking forward to seeing how this finished.
