I never planned on sleeping with him. Nor did I intend to make him my enemy. I only went into the bar to scope out my competition – him. The scorching hot night that followed was a mutually pleasurable accident.
Of course I knew we were in the running for the same position. It’s not my fault he didn’t know who I was. Gathering intel is my specialty. Maybe if he were better at it, he would have gotten the job instead of me.
I tried my hardest to resist our chemistry, but he was too damn hot. Too charming. Too funny. Too masculine. And he smelled so freaking good. My hormones took over.
Now we're working together on the Redleg Security intelligence team. Every day. High stress. Close quarters. Sexual chemistry off the charts. But he hates me.
The thing is… he should hate me. I treated him like a pawn. But he’s a real man with dreams, passion, and pain. And I’ve never wanted someone as much as I want him.
But it’s too late for us. I made us rivals when we could have been so much more.
Rival Hero is Book 4 in the Redleg Security Series of steamy romantic suspense novels with romcom vibes. Each book in this series features a different couple complete with their happily ever after and is a "complete story" with no cliffhangers. The books are best read in order to avoid suspense-related plot spoilers since each book starts with a new couple right where the prior book ends. However, each book can be read on its own if you don't wish to read them all. Content warnings are available on the author's website.
This novel is written in alternating first person point of view and contains spicy scenes, a strong heroine who's a former CIA intelligence officer, a swoony former Army Ranger hero who will make you laugh one minute and swoon the next. There's page-turning action and all the feels, along with a healthy dose of humor. There is an HEA, no cheating, and no "other woman" drama.
*** Jackie brings you stories featuring her signature blend of comedy, spice, suspense, multi-faceted characters, and romantic, heartwarming moments. A voracious romance reader herself, Jackie writes stories featuring the four Ss: Suspense, Swoons, Steam, and Sarcasm.
Her heroines are badass, and her heroes are easy on the eyes and heavy on the charm. She loves writing characters with real emotions, flaws, and mental health issues and is known to send them to therapy where they belong. Let’s normalize that shit.
When she is not writing stories about swoony heroes and the women who get to play with them, she is avoiding life with an audiobook in her ears or taking care of her army of cats and peacocks or hanging with her teenage son (who also speaks fluent sarcasm).
Never have I ever been so close to spending an exceptionally high dollar amount on audiobooks as I was when I finished this story. NEVER
Do with that tidbit what you will but also, OH EM GEE I LOVE THIS STORY!
This story was exciting and fun in one way or another from the beginning until the very end! Not only did the MCs spark as individuals and a couple, but so did the storyline! The story blended romance, suspense, and levity really well. Jackie is a new-to-me author with Rival Hero and, as I’ve already mentioned, I had to basically sit on my hands not to spend a small fortune on her audiobooks once I finished this story, she has now jumped to a go-to author. I am really looking forward to binging this series ASAP!
🎧Jason Clarke & Erin Mallon’s performances in this story were so good that I might just call it the best I’ve listened to by both in my audiobook era! They brought to life all aspects of the story and its characters so flawlessly that even now, a week after I listened to this story, I can feel the joy the story brought to me! 👏🏻👏🏻loud round of applause for Jackie, Erin & Jason!👏🏻👏🏻 Job well done!!
Two more things I’d like to mention. First, because it deserves to be said again and again (lol), that feeling I had that I wanted to go back and listen/read this series asap, is not something that happens very often for me. I can count on one hand and have fingers left over the times it has happened. I am highly impressed by Jackie Walker. Second, the circumstance surrounding Klein and his mother were dealt with care, respect, and relatability. It is always important to me for stories to be realistic and factual when portraying any kind of disease. It lends credibility to the author and the story. I have dealt and am now dealing with Alzheimer’s disease , and it isn’t something that is black and white. This disease lives in the grey and it takes a huge investment to make sure it is portrayed properly. Thank you for investing the time, Jackie.
Okay, well these are my thoughts, and I would never tell anyone how they should spend their money but … go do the thing (from the beginning) #trust
I’m loving this series so much, I’ve listened to all of them on audio and the narrators have all been amazing. Each book has gotten hotter too, the spice here 🥵🪭 Perfect blend of sexy, suspenseful, funny and sweet!
I was so excited for this book and it definitely didn’t disappoint. As with the previous Redleg books, this one has all the nail biting suspense, laughs, tears and spice. The book deals with some pretty heavy themes but Jackie deals with it beautifully and the family issues that both the main characters faces with has been written with so much compassion and care.
Mia is fiery and sassy and fiercely independent, not accepting anything from anyone. She is being considered for a position with the Redleg team and her trust issues leads her to investigate her potential co-workers. This leads to a “by chance” run in with her competition at a bar.
Enter Klein, the quintessential boy next door. He is sweet and caring and the shoulder everyone else leans on. They share an amazing night but this all falls apart when they meet again at work and Klein learns that Mia is the person who got the job he wanted.
The sparks fly between these two as they are forced to work together in close proximity on a case. Add to that Klein’s dom awakening and you have the perfect combination of hot and spicy and sweet. This included a scene or two that will blow your mind and get you very hot under the collar. You have been warned.
Of course we are spoiled with all our other favourite Redleg team members and we have a very unexpected plot twist from a team member I did not see coming at all. It is going to leave you surprised and craving more!
Rival Hero releases on July 31st and I can’t wait for people to read it.
Rival Hero by Jackie Walker Whew! These Redleg series books just keep getting spicier! Klein is our sweet cinnamon roll until he meets Mia. She unlocks something in him that unleashes his inner “keenk.” Mia and Klein are up for the same position at Redleg Security. Mia arranges an “accidental” meeting with Klein to research her competition. Klein thinks they have a real connection and is devastated when he finds out he was deceived. When they meet again he is surprised to discover his urges to punish her for what she did. In true Jackie Walker fashion, the storyline will keep you on the edge of your seat as our heroic Redleg team goes on missions and deals with the situations that arise, while the spicy scenes will have you fanning yourself and blushing pink, and of course the laugh-out-loud humor!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🌶🌶🌶🌶 I just finished listening to the ALC of "Rival Hero" by Jackie Walker, and it was an absolute delight! Narrators Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke delivered stellar performances, bringing the characters to life with such vibrancy and depth. I have to say, anything read by Jason Clarke is always a treat, and he did not disappoint.
"Rival Hero" is Book 4 in the Redleg Security Series, and it seamlessly blends romcom vibes with a touch of dark romance. Fans of "Butcher & Blackbird" and "Leather & Lark" will absolutely love this book. The story is a perfect balance of steamy romantic suspense, action, and humor, with alternating FP perspectives that add a personal touch to the narrative.
The strong heroine, a former CIA intelligence officer, and the swoon-worthy former Army Ranger hero kept me hooked from start to finish. Their chemistry is electric, and the spice is deliciously spicy. (Check TW's for sure) The plot is filled with page-turning action, emotional depth, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.
I appreciated that each book in the series can be read as a standalone, though they’re best enjoyed in order to avoid spoilers. With no cliffhangers, a guaranteed HEA, no cheating, and no OW/OM drama, this book hits all the right notes for a satisfying read.
Jackie Walker has crafted another gem with "Rival Hero." I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a captivating romantic suspense with a dose of humor and all the feels. Five stars all the way!
Snarky laugh out loud fun!! Mia is a ex CIA agent who wants to go to work for Redleg Security as a computer tech. In the process she does a lot of things that make her unlikeable.
She’s right. It is creepy. Because I’m a creeping creeper who creeps.
Klein was going after the same job and is shocked when he sees who he’ll be working with.
Whatever is happening here spells doom! Doom, I say. Doom!
“You don’t get to call me that anymore. The name is Klein. And this puppy bites back, so steer clear, or you’ll get hurt.”
These characters just jump out at you and you can’t help but fall in love with them.
I read this as an arc and I haven't read the other books in the series....that being said....this was absolutely phenomenal!! I know there were little details i would have gleaned from the previous books but I was able to follow along well without them. I loved the snark of Mia! She is an absolute firecracker! She also released some insecurities about bedroom details that isn't normally shown. I really liked a chance at seeing our FMC be unsure about what she wanted. I feel like this book could have ended several different times before it actually did. There were so many different contingencies and sideways problems that all got their time in the limelight. The FMC & MMC evolved so well throughout the story and I will definitely be going back to read the first three!
I’m so in love with Klein & Mia and the Redleg Security fam!
Updating for Audiobook Review!
Narrated by: Erin Mallon & Jason Clarke
It’s book four in the Redleg Security series. You can read the HEA as a standalone, but Redleg Security & the suspense plot themes are interconnected.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (0-5) Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (0-5) public places, toys, mild BDSM, lots of delicious details Narration: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 (0-5) Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (I’d give it 6 or 10 if I could—ALL the shiny stars!)
What I’m Starry-Eyed Over: 🤩🎧 The narrators smashingly bring out all the feelings in this one—sweet, feisty, sad, sensual, sympathetic, scared, and so very stimulated! And, yeah, every time they said stud, Tiger, good girl, cake, etc I definitely melted!
🤩 One-night stand, enemies-to-lovers, workplace romance. 🤩 My favorite part (of the whole series) is how funny and s3xy the MCs are even though some of the topics are serious and heart-wrenching. Truly ALL the feels. 🤩 Cool captivation—it feels so natural and smooth how Jackie captures our attention with an enticing plot and scrumptious characters. 🤩 Cal Klein is totally my newest book boyfriend—he loves with his whole mind, soul, and body. 🤩 Cake on her mind—I love how Mia is obsessed with cake and Cal’s “cakey tush.” 🤩 The suspense and mystery of the storyline is fantastic. That “need to know” kind of feeling. 🤩 New word of the book: bjology. You must like some kinky to enjoy this one, friends. 🤩 Stud, tiger, good girl—I’m melting. These nicknames really work on me. 🤩 These two MCs are strong and determined on their own, but together they help each other become the best versions of themselves. 🤩 Beautiful and loving representation of caring for a parent with dementia. 🤩 Impressive theme of fighting the good fight against human trafficking. 🤩 The whole Redleg Security series has the best found-family and work family vibes.
Ive read all of Jackie's previous books and I think it's my favorite so far. Everything about it was *chefs kiss*... definitely will be one I'll re-read and get a physical copy of. It was 🌶 spicy🌶 with an amazing plot, great character development and a perfect level of suspense. Perfect book boyfriend award goes to Klein 😍 And did I mention it was spicy...
So Im adding to this cause I've listened to the audiobook and just wow! Two absolutely amazing narrators to go with such an amazing book.
This was one of my favorite ebooks and now it's one of my favorite audiobooks.
4.5 Stars! Naming your MMC Calvin Klein is a bit unserious, but…at least I was not disappointed in the story!
Actually, I really am enjoying this series & this book did not disappoint! I am really enjoying the mix of romance, suspense, humour and banter, and spicy scenes that this series is giving! Overall, entertaining!
Mia and Klein (Cal) are both up for the same position at Redleg Security. Giving Mia’s history and paranoia, she just can’t help but “accidentally” meeting Klein one night at a bar in order to research her competition. Although she did not plan for it, and this meeting was originally meant just to gain information on her competition, Mia and Klein really hit it off and end up having a real connection. Klein thinks they have a real connection and is devastated when he finds out he was deceived. They now have to work together and the tension really is real!
As always Jackie Walker really knows how to get you invested in the characters and the story! I was really into the storyline and was at the edge of my seat wanting to find out everything that was going on; from the progression of the relationship between Klein and Mia, but also with the side plot missions the team were on. Also, this series keeps getting spicier and I’m here for it. This has a touch of bdsm and it was 🔥 Sidenote: I really loved how consent was discussed. Overall, I really loved this book and the journey it took me on. To say this was over 19 hours, I just couldn't put it down. It had my undivided attention, and I was invested from page 1, all the way through to the last page. I most definitely recommend it!
Narration done by Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon. They both did amazingly with the narration. They were able to convey all the emotions and moods that both Cal and Mia were going through. Their voices were perfect for the characters. They truly brought the characters and the story to life! Highly recommend!
Thanks to the author, Jackie Walker, and the team at HomeCooked Books for providing me with an advanced audio review copy of this book. All opinions provided in this review are entirely my own.
“Rival Hero” was my first time reading something by Jackie Walker, and it was an intriguing romantic suspense novel. The two POV characters, Cal and Mia, have a complicated relationship that is a huge factor in the decisions they make. They started off as rivals, but then became so much more, despite Cal’s trust issues and Mia’s hesitancy to let him in. The side plot with Cal’s mother was really moving for me, as I have a relative with early onset Alzheimer’s as well, and I can say with 100% honesty that Walker really did her research on what those symptoms are like. I also could never guess the plot twists that happened throughout the book, and once I figured out what was happening by the end, I couldn’t believe that I didn’t put the pieces together sooner! All in all, this was an interesting read that I think fans of romantic suspense will enjoy.
Mia is nerdy, quirky, and smart as hell. Cal is sweet, disciplined, and is a golden retriever with Dom energy. The spice in this was 🔥🔥. Cal learns he has a different side to him in the bedroom, and it is lip biting, fanning yourself, rubbing thighs good. The chemistry and tension between the two of them is so palpable.
The story is fast-paced, definitely romance over plot, buthas a mystery factor that draws you in and keeps you reading. Overall, I really enjoyed this and put the rest of Jackie's books on my TBR.
4 star review Rival Hero (Redleg Security #4) by Jackie Walker
Audio Review: This is the fourth book in the Redleg security series, and it was a good listen. Narrated by Jason Clarke and Erin Mallo, both did a good job with their narration bringing all the drama, suspense, passion and angst to life with their performances. There were equal amounts of suspense, humour, passion and emotion whilst listening. I fell hard and fast for former Army Ranger Klein but had a harder time relating to Mia. Klein is totally swoon worthy and the care and love he has for him mother warmed my heart. Mia is certainly sassy and feisty but not as easy to like.
From the moment they met, the sparks flew and it was entertaining to watch the push and pull dynamic as their relationship developed. There were moments where I was on the edge of my seat whilst listening and was surprised at some of the twists and turns.
Just when I thought I couldn’t be anymore obsessed with these books Jackie Walker proves me wrong in the best way possible with her newest release in the redleg security series, Rival Hero. I am head over heels for Klein & Mia’s story. The rivals to lovers/workplace second chance romance between them is full of emotional ups & downs as well as some very spicy moments. Their romance mixed in with the attention grabbing plot & some really emotional moments was absolute perfection! I laughed so many times reading this book but also had to choke back tears in some part. I absolutely love that we also got more of the other characters antics in this book. A must read book for sure!!!
Loved It, Jackie has written a fabulous book you will taken on a journey with Cal and Mia story. Cal is a gentlemen and Mia has bless her she has trust issue hence why did what she did you will get the background on Mia so please don’t judge her to quickly. I love the the whole Redleg team, this book has everything you need romance, hot steamy scenes and a great story running along with all of the above.
WOW! JUST WOW! This story was an emotional one. This story will bring tears, laughter and has suspense and totally brings the steam! Klein and Mia each have personal struggles that are huge for them and obstacles to get over. Klein has a huge heart, is loving and protective. Mia is a strong woman, with a strong personality. These two are just amazing together. Of course we get to see all of our favorite Redleg family members as well! Jackie Walker did not disappoint! Definitely a must read!
*I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*
I was pretty excited when I received my copy of my first Jackie Walker book and I really enjoyed reading it. We had some very serious cinnamon roll vibes from our MMC which is always a crowd pleaser and a pretty sexually experienced, not shy, MFC. A lot of family situations and heavy topics but all were handled perfectly. I loved the side characters and it definitely leaves me wanting to read the books that came before this one in the RedLeg series.
I was definitely not expecting this the twist that came along!
My only *ick* is the use of endearments. I absolutely hated them and I had to skip over and pretend they weren’t there “tiger” and “stud” just….. no. Total mood killer. Also, the cake and pie thing……… too much. 🫣🥴
I love this book. Every book in this series is better than the last and they started out excellent. Mia and Cal are an amazing couple and very realistic. And OMG Chapter 18! If you like spice and snark this is the book for you.
Audio Review Narrated by Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon
Jason and Erin are veritably plucked out of my head as the perfect voices for Klien and Mia. I thought the book was hot and amazing, but the audio version was even more hot and amazing. Their ability to show the emotions of the characters and the proper tone for each situation brings the story to another level. And as always probably shouldn’t listen to chapter 18 at work. ;)
Cake or Pie? Cake and Pie... and lots of action and steam!
Rival Hero is the fourth entry in the Redleg Security series, and I can say without a doubt it is now my favorite. Although the first three books are pretty great, too. Each book in this series picks up right where the previous book left off, so I highly recommend reading Heartbreak Hero, Forbidden Hero, and Comeback Hero first, but this can be read as a standalone since the author provides enough backstory throughout for you to be able to follow along. Rival Hero features our heroine, Mia, who is a wonderfully and at times beautifully painfully flawed, perfectly badass CIA Intelligence officer with mad skills when it comes to technology and digging up secrets. She's got wounds from her past that have taken their toll and have largely led to a lonely existence. Our hero Klein, appears to be a former Army Ranger and full time cinnamon roll at first glance, who listens to the Rat Pack, bakes, is loyal to his friends and devoted to his family, and is a gentleman who is ultimately looking to settle down and start a family. As we get to know our hero throughout the book we get a delicious surprise when it turns out this cinnamon roll has a deliciously gooey Dom center, and the angst and chemistry between the two MCs is what is responsible for waking it up.
This book finds our heroine seeking to get out of the CIA and start healing some of the damage of her past, but not before she she uses those skills to to dig up some dirt on her rival for the job she wants at Redleg the seemingly sweet human version of a golden retriever, Klein (Cal to eventually to Mia and his family, Klein to everyone else), yes, Calvin, really his name. As the book progresses we (and Mia) learn he's also carrying a few secrets of his own.
The beginning of our story finds Mia intentionally seeking out Klein for a little recon only she doesn't expect to be quite so attracted to him. The chemistry between these two is present from the first meeting and ignites immediately and only burns hotter as our two MCs quickly turn into rivals forced into grudgingly close proximity through an unexpected decision from Boss. (One item of note: The scenes with Klein and his mother who has early onset Alzheimers were at times both heartwarming and heartwrenching and you could feel the absolute devotion he had to making her comfortable as the disease progressed. But these could be difficult for anyone who is dealing with this topic or that of losing a parent in real life so I'd advise the reader be aware of that before starting this book as it is a central plot point.)
(Sidenote, I am excited for the next two planned Redleg books, but now I really need Jonesy and Aaron's books...) After both Klein and Mia are blindsided by Boss's decision that forces them into one another's orbit more and more frequently, the anger, the sass, and the lust reach epic proportions.
Throughout the book, it's clear to everyone else at Redleg that they have a past but neither Klein or Mia are speaking up. The book has what I would classify as a mostly classic enemies-to-lovers vibe woth some twists and turns and of course some seruous escalating the bad blood between them. But this definitely doesn't dampen the chemistry or the lust between these two characters. Eventually, the hostility and lust reach epic proportions and it's clear something has to give when little blow ups start to happen that even the mkat oblivious Redleg guard notices.
The shift from enemies to lovers begins with one of the spiciest scenes I've ever read, if D/s dynamics are not your thing, this scene and this book probably won't be your jam as the rest of the bedroom scenes are equally spicy. The shift between our MCs isn't instantaneous though, which I appreciated as it felt realistic. Even as things begin to shift both Klein and Mia still have their individual issues to work through before they can teuly make something work all while attempting a daring and risky rescue of someone important to Redleg. I liked that this book villains are tied to the previous books in the Redleg series and that also makes the case for reading the previous books in this series.
Mia's passion for using her skills, skills which initially contributed to the enemy situation with Cal, to help victims and her willingness to support him go along way toward helping Klein take that leap from enemy to lover and Klein's genuine goodness, care and concern for his family, everyone he cares about, and Mia herself, result in her taking that leap from enemies to lovers right along with him. not everyone is out to harm her or those she loves. These two were made for each other and while there was some pain getting there and at times for personal reasons, reading Mia felt a bit like an uncomfortable mirror, this was a book I couldn't put down and worth every minute of housework I skipped to finish it.
Take a guaranteed HEA, a cinnamon role hero with some delicious hidden Dom tendencies, a badass heroine who's willing to (eventually admit her mistakes) and actually enjoys handing over the control sometimes, add in some of the spiciest bedroom scenes from thus author to date, and some by turns beatifully heartwrenching and heartwarming scenes with Klein and his mom, and of course appearances by our favorite previous Redleg couples and guards and a cliffhanger for the next two Redleg men to get books and hoo-boy, do we have yet another winner. This book is definitely my favorite entry in the Redleg series and Klein is tied with my OG choice, Hudson from Love and Other Mistakes, for favorite book boyfriend from this author's books. I can't wait to see what comes next for our Redleg men and women.
One thing I particularly want to note, I really appreciate about this author is her consistent treatment of difficult topics with both a content/trigger warning at the beginning as well as just the general sensitivity in the way they were handled in all her stories. I also liked that the D/s topic was discussed among the male characters in terms of consent, safety and what is and isn't a true D/s dynamic along with motivations for entering that type of dynamic and how it's not weird or deviant to like it.
Guaranteed HEA with no cliffhangers for our hero/heroine. No cheating or other woman plotlines or anything like that.
Wow the last chapters of the book, will keep you on the edge of where ever you are reading the book. Twists and turns and surprises Wow,I couldn't wait for more. Sweet moments and Heart Rate Rising moment.
Jackie Walker is one of my new favorite writers

Mia explains to him the situation and shows him everything she has found online. Who is this Lettie and who is connected to at Redleg? There is a heart rate rising moment between Mia and Klein when Tomer gives them a time limit to talk out what ever was bothering them, and he leaves the office.
I love how Jackie adds old school music to the story. The Rat Pack(if you ever read any books about Marylin Monroe, you won't look at Sinatra the same again) ,Neil Diamond etc.
Who is Violet Holt(Lattie),I am getting the feeling she could be related Mia or a family member to the others at Redleg. She promises Klein she will tell him everything, if he will help her find this girl, and he agrees.
My heart goes out to Klein and Caroline about their mom. He knows in his heart a facility would help their mom, but they will have to sell the one thing Klein thinks is the last of their parents' marriage. I remember seeing that with my Dad and my aunt for my Grandma,so yes this does hit home, but thank you Jackie for bringing this disease into the story.
Wow we are getting the Russian Mafia this book is heating up,I can't wait to read more
Chapters 6-10
These chapters to take us on the journey on Klein and Mia at work. The story takes you on the journey of Mia's first day and then weeks.
I love how it's the POV of Klein, then Mia,then back to Klein. My heart still goes out to Klein's family, not knowing where his mom was wow, that was scary.
What is happening with Mia and Tomer, the end of chapter 10,oh no!!!!
This is my first time reading a book by Jackie Walker
Chapters 1-5
Most authors wait until the middle of the book to have as I say "heart rate rising moment", but Jackie took us up the rollercoaster in quick speed.
I know they are not real people, but my heart goes out to Klein and his family for their mom.
Klein gets to work and thinks he will get a promotion, but not only is the place hacked, but it's hacked by the girl he met at the bar and who took his promotion.

Rival Hero might be my favorite in the Redleg Series. With each book I think it’s the best, but they just keep getting better and better! This book has the perfect amount of suspense, spice, witty banter, and heart. My gosh I love Jackie Walker so freaking much! What an absolute legend she is 😍
Mia has a past that she has been trying to reconcile with for years. Leaving the CIA to work for Redleg may be just the opportunity she needs in order to “fix” things. Her inner p!mp NEEDS information. Which is what leads her to Klein, aka Cal. This ‘chance’ encounter ends in a heated night, though each feels something more. Weeks later, it all comes to a head when Cal finally sees Mia again. And her betrayal causes Klein to want to punish her, a feeling he’s never had before. This sweet as pie mama’s boy has an inner Dom just waiting to be unleashed.
What can I say about the narration of this book except that it was utter perfection?! Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon are two of THE BEST in the business! They did a stellar job or narrating this entire story. Clarke and Mallon embodied each character to a T. They made me laugh (a lot!), swoon (also a lot!), gasp, cry, MELT, and added that extra something to the suspenseful parts that made them so nerve wracking and exciting! I seriously am in awe of their talent and skill. No matter where you land on the “Cake vs Pie” debate, we can all agree that Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke bring decadence to our ears 🖤🖤
This book is so much more than the EPIC SPICE that it contains. Whew 🥵 it’s freaking fantastic! But the story itself, the guilt, the burdens, the self discovery, the forgiveness…THAT is what makes this story so good. Well, that and the absolute off the charts witty banter! 😂 I straight up CACKLED throughout the story. I don’t want to give too much away on this story, just know that this book is an absolute ‘must read!’
Some thoughts while reading:
The heartbreaking dynamic between Klein and his mother made me cry more than once. He cares so much for her and what she’s going through is destroying him. My heart is shattering for him.
Mia has so much trepidation and vulnerability because of what her past holds, how she “met” Cal. But I love the way he helps her figure out how to open up.
The heartache of chapter 43 but then the sweetness at the end of it?
The conversation at dinner between Klein, Shep, and Sawyer had me absolutely rolling with laughter! And the revelation of one of their guys 😳🤯 but I can totally see it! Now I can’t wait to read his story!
Holy shit! That bonus epilogue was one of the sweetest, hottest, and funnest chapters I have EVER READ! Each time I think Jackie Walker has outdone herself, she proves me wrong!
🍰 For a moment, I envy him, wishing my cup of f***s was empty. It used to be, and it was easier to live with myself that way. But I have f***s now. Too many f***s to give.” 🥧 “Prove it. Make me believe you. Earn me.” 🍰 “Oh, motherplucking chicken biscuits!” 🥧 “Yes. I want more from you, tiger. You need to be p^nished. You haven’t earned my fingers f***ing your wet p***y yet. You haven’t earned my tongue on your cl*t or my c*** in your tight h0l3. Have you?” 🍰 “He was but mere moments from frosting my lady cake.” 🥧 “I’m not sure if you’re being a good girl or a dirty girl. Sucking your ar0us@l off my fingers seems like something a dirty girl would do, but I told you to do it, and you obeyed instantly like a good girl.” 🍰 Her fingertips, glistening with her ar0us@l, skim along my lips. “Open for your dirty girl, Cal.” 🥧 “That’s my perfect f***ing girl.”
Excellent Story & Narration🎧 Intriguing & Heartfelt!
Rival Hero Redleg Security, Book 4 By: Jackie Walker Narrated by: Jason Clarke, Erin Mallon
Jackie Walker pens another amazing novel set in her “Redleg Security” world, each book stands on its own, but it is best to enjoy the books in order written, characters crossover into each other’s books and it is beneficial to know their backstories, besides seeing them again is like seeing an old friend. Not to mention, each book is just as amazing as the next, an action packed romantic suspense with a perfect balance of drama, angst, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. This fourth book is Cal Klein and Mia’s story, and what a story it is, one that captivates your attention starting from when they first meet and holds it hostage all the way to the end. Cal is a former Army Ranger, current Redleg Security team member and Mia, former CIA and a newcomer to the Redleg Security team, who took the job that Cal was hoping to get. Mia is great at what she does and is not very trusting, but she has her reasons for it. She does some shady things, digging into things where she shouldn’t for personal reasons, but she also does it for good and that leads to rescue and then gets them in deeper, but the team is on it. Cal is a complete sweetheart, loved that he took care of his mom, also loved how he was with Mia. I thought they were great together and for each other. There is never a dull moment in this book and I loved how it all played out, the witty dialogue and humor balanced the darker topics. Also loved the camaraderie among the team members. And as always, the writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. Jackie Walker, thank you for another fantastic story and the emotional rollercoaster ride, loved the thrilling and suspenseful moments and the steamy ones, too.
🎧📚🎧 Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon are amazing at what they do and Jackie Walker could not have chosen a better cast to bring her characters to life. Their character voices were fitting, and I loved how they took each role and made it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined they would sound. Mallon nailed it as Mia, grasping every aspect of her personality, from her strengths to her insecurities, handling her inner dialogue and her wit naturally. Clarke was just as amazing as Cal, grasping every aspect of his personality, too, from his caring side to swoon worthy side to when he let loose. Both were fabulous performing the roles of the secondary characters too. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their performance elevates this already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another exceptional listen.
Book four of the series brings readers the story of Mia and Klein and their road to their HEA. It can be read as a standalone and is written in first person from an alternating dual POV. At 474 pages, this book is not a quick read: readers will want to allow themselves time to sink into it. Cal (Calvin Klein) is a little cinnamon roll, a little golden retriever, and discovers through Mia (to his surprise) that he is also a bit of a dominant alpha. I will say I absolutely loved Cal. His relationship with his mom is exceptionally sweet. I loved his old soul. I loved all of his sides. I adored his protective and overall kind personality. Mia is a nerdy heroine who is making changes to her life. She is leaving the CIA and hoping to reestablish relationships with her estranged sisters. She has seen humanity at its worst and her ability to trust is severely compromised. Her actions at times are wrong, yet the author does a good job of letting the reader empathize with why she does what she does-eventually. I like the relationship she forms with Cal’s mom and with the other ladies from Redleg. Those relationships and the way she finally opens up to Cal allow readers to learn her heart and believe that she deserves her HEA. Readers who have read other books in this series will expect suspenseful moments along with comedic moments. Those are present along with the heat the author has had in her other books and then some. I think this book may contain the most physical intimacy scenes of all her books and they are hot. Readers who know Jackie will also get the sarcasm, snark, and sometimes crazy sense of humor she always brings to her books and her characters. Both characters have a lot of internal monologues available to readers that, just like our own internal monologues can be at times, are sometimes a little repetitive. Pop culture references are frequently used to draw out the characters’ snark and personalities. As in previous books her characters also frequently break the fourth wall and address the reader directly. Though the book deals with some heavy topics related to Cal and Mia’s families and the Redleg cases, I felt they were handled with care. This is especially true of Cal’s mom and her early onset dementia. Having gone through that with my mom, Cal’s feelings and his mother’s both felt accurate and true to what I experienced. It was heartbreaking and the reader feels that. I loved seeing other members of the Redleg team and how they interacted with each other. The conversation between the guys at the restaurant, in particular, is going to stay with me for a while. This was a good read that made me laugh and swoon. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
Rival Hero is the fourth book in the Redleg Security Series by Jackie Walker. It is the story of Klein and Mia - One-night stand, enemies-to-lovers, and workplace romance.
Klein is former Special OPs turned security/bodyguard and IT for Redleg Security. Klein is eternally optimistic and always has a smile. He is the dutiful son who watches over his mother who suffers from dementia. Despite his “vanilla” vibes it turns out Klein is a cinnamon roll with a touch of dominant.
Mia is former CIA who is looking for a more stable job so that she might be in a position to reconnect with her estranged family without the threat of harm coming to them. As a result of past trauma, Mia has her heart locked up tight and does not trust easily. She has what she calls her “inner pimp” that she blames for her compulsive need to know everything and dig up personal information.
Klein is stunned when the woman he spent an unforgettable one-night stand with turns out to be the person who got the promotion he was so desperately relying on.
While Klein is filled with feelings of anger, and betrayal when he realizes that Mia had dug into his background and orchestrated their supposed initial “chance” meeting, he also cannot ignore his overwhelming pull toward Mia. Feeling the same undeniable chemistry with Klein, Mia is determined to repair the damage she has done. When she expresses her desire to prove herself to him, Klein challenges Mia to “earn” him.
At the heart of the story is the question of whether Mia can in fact earn the trust of Klein and also learn to open her heart to the possibility of love and whether Klein can trust that she has truly changed and allow himself to open up to her.
I have high expectations when it comes to a new book by Jackie Walker and this one did not disappoint. The story kept my attention throughout with its humor, steam, and touch of danger and mystery. The author handled the sensitive topics well. As an added bonus there were glimpses into Tomer’s story which left me anticipating the next book. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates a captivating story and a hard-earned HEA.
AUDIOBOOK Having read the book I was skeptical that the audio would be able to live up to the book and accurately convey the humor, vulnerability, and steam. Well, I was proven wrong. Jason Clarke and Erin Mallon were masterful as Klein and Mia doing these scenes and the entire story justice. They succeeded in bringing these characters to life and conveying the essence of their personalities.
🎧Audiobook Review 🎧 🎤 Dual Narration by Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke Story⭐: 4.5/5 Narration 🎤: 5/5 Spice 🌶️: 4/5
This was my first Jackie Walker book and I can’t believe I waited this long to read one of her books. There so much depth to this story, it’s got suspense, but also comedy. There’s great character growth, self-discovery and healing. This is a rivals to lovers workplace romance with lots of banter spice, suspense and plot twists. It’s a 19+ hour long audiobook and the pacing is perfect. The story sucks you in and keeps you wanting more. I think it’s a great road trip listen.
This is the 4th book in the Redleg Security series and can be read as a standalone, but for the best reading experience, you should probably start at the beginning. The suspense storyline is interconnected so to get a fullest picture, it’s best to read them in order. It was easy enough to follow along with what was going on, though. I also think it would be more enjoyable to start at the beginning because we can better connect with the side characters if we know their backstory. Also, this is apparently the spiciest book in the series, so if you like a lot of spice, you might not want to start with this one, but rather build up to it.
I love the chemistry between Klein and Mia. Klein is a cinnamon roll, who has dom tendencies that he doesn’t discover until he meets Mia. Mia also has submissive tendencies that Klein brings out of her. I love the easy banter between them. In the middle of being intimate something would happen and they’d just start cracking up, before the tension would start to build again and I enjoyed seeing that. It showed the emotional connection between them. That at the core of everything they were friends first and they were comfortable being their silly selves around each other. I love that they give each other the confidence and the space to explore their darkness and heal from past wounds. Klein’s life is complicated, but Mia fits into it perfectly. She’s very understanding and supportive and helps ground him when he’s feeling overwhelmed.
From the beginning I really liked Klein. He’s the type of guy who puts others before himself. He looks out for the people he cares about and sacrifices his own happiness to make sure they’re alright. Mia, on the other hand, I had mixed feelings about, at the beginning.(which is why i gave the story 4.5 stars and not 5). To put it plainly, I thought she was weird, and not it a cute, fun way; talking about her “inner pimp”, and giving creepy stalker vibes. And then there was that thing that she did to Klein. I love that he made her work to earn him. In books, it’s usually the guy who screws up and has to make it up to the girl, so it’s always a special treat when it’s reversed. Pretty quickly, it became obvious that something happened in her past that made her the way she is, but we didn’t find out what happened till a lot further into to story.
The side characters in this story were great. They form a really strong found family. They support each other and give each other shit in equal measure. The side characters definitely add a lot of humour to the story. They’re people I’d love to have a drink (or 5) with. And now I’m eager to learn their backstories. I’m also looking forward to the next 2 stories. This book sets up Tomer and Violet’s story, which is a duet. The first part, Unexpected Hero is already out on paperback and ebook. The second part comes later in the year. And then the boss’s story, which we also got hints of in this book, is coming out after that.
The narrators for this were excellent. They portray the main characters perfectly. They also bring out the different personalities of the side characters. This is done in dual style and Erin Mallon does a fantastic male voice. Jason Clarke is exceptional in the spicy scenes. This is the first time I’ve read a “dom awakening,” and I think he played out those scenes flawlessly. This book has so many ups and downs and the narrators make us feel all of it. They both put so much emotion into their performance and keep us engaged, every minute of the story.
This book has something for everyone, like suspense, comedy, emotional moments, strong friendships, and so much more. This is a great book for you if you like a action and suspense, if you’re in the mood to feel all the feelings and if you like a lot of spice.
*I received an early copy from Homecooked books and this is my honest review.
I couldn’t wait for Klein’s story. And I just knew that the intro of Mia to the Redleg world was going to be done with a whole fireworks show accompanying it. And boy, was I NOT disappointed. The way this book started with a spicy one night stand, you know it’s gonna be good. Klein is the good guy who is sweet, compassionate, & overall, basically the boy next door. He’s focused on his family, but keeps his personal life personal. At least until he figures out that his Redleg colleagues are just as much family as friends. Mia has lived a life with challenges that she has had to overcome. She’s brilliant as a hacker, but previous life experiences has taught her that you cannot trust people at face value. When Klein is informed of the new employee hired into the position he was vying for, he automatically has a bit of animosity towards them. But when that new coworker walks in, & it’s his very recent & very unforgettable one night stand, the bitterness only grows. The connection he thought he felt seems to have been a well thought out plan to seduce & betray. But he’s not going to let her off that easy. The tension between them in office is palpable & unmistakable. And when forced to “work out their issues”, these two find that there is so much more to their back & forth banter. Mia is a warrior to save & protect, & when a vigilante mission falls on her doorstep, she turns to the one person that she feels she can trust above all, Klein. Their forced proximity situation drives them to explore their attraction & we find a side of Klein that surprises even him. His dom awakening was definitely worth the adventure this book took me on. There were sensitive real life issues that were addressed, but they were covered with poise & grace. The humor these Redleg guys possess always has me openly chuckling while reading. The references for their favorite desserts, pie vs. cake, had me cackling. And when difficult situations arose, I found myself choking down tears. But watching these guys & girls band together as one unit for the greater good of others, I felt a sense of pride. The plot twists of all plot twists left me with my mouth hanging open & in desperate need of the next installment of this series. Bring on Tomer & Lettie!
Audiobook Review: Jason Clarke & Erin Mallon were spectacular, as always. These two have a level of magic when narrating together than just consumes my entire being. Jason’s delivery of our new cinnadom, Klein, was on point & had more than Mia in a chokehold. Erin’s portrayal of our resident bada$$ hacker was absolutely impeccable.
🎧AUDIO REVIEW🎧 📚The Rival Hero by Jackie Walker 🎤Erin Mallon & Jason Clarke
⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is the 3rd book I've listened to in the Redleg Security series & each book keeps getting better & better and..... spicier 🥵 Jackie has a real knack for writing romantic suspense romcom!! It's a blend of edge of your suspense, laughs, tears & steamy moments. Despite the fact that there's lots of laugh out loud moments, the book deals with some heavy topics that are handled with total care & compassion. I was really impressed by how well Jackie did it. Lots of sweet tender dialogue about tough topics.
Mia is a former CIA agent with red hair that matches her fiery, spunky personality. She wants to go work for Redleg as a computer tech. She doesn't come off too likable in the beginning. She's a "creeping creeper who creeps!" 😂
Klein wants the same job. Here's a guy who is a complete cinnamon roll, dutiful son & the guy everyone leans on. He's shocked when he finds out Mia is the one who gets the position & comes at her full force. "The name is Klein & this puppy bites back, so steer clear, or you'll get hurt."
History haunts these two because of a one-night stand they had & now that Mia's got the job, Klein feels he deserves, tension starts brewing people... but it's sexual tension & these two quickly fall fast & hard again. Mia unleashes something in Klein he didn't know existed!😲
The suspense & mystery of the storyline are terrific. That feeling like...what is gonna happen next all through the book. These two MC's are both strong & determined on their own, making it seem like an unlikely fit, but they actually end up helping one another become better versions of themselves. There's a wonderful representation of caring for a parent with dementia. It's tender & sweet & the narrators do a fantastic job conveying all the emotions wrapped up with such a sensitive topic.
The whole Redleg series has such a great found-family vibe. These working relationships are close, funny & sweet. They know what's going on in each others lives & have each other's backs.
🎧Let's talk narration, Erin Mallon & Jason Clarke do an absolute banger job in this. They bring these characters to life with exuberance & depth. Jason absolutely blew me away with his narration in this one, voicing the different women so perfectly! He voices an amazing Russian accent & when he voiced his mother, it had me in stiches. Perfection! Did I forget how well Clarke voices women, I guess so!!!! Mallon always delivers & she's terrific as the smart-mouthed, quick-witted Mia. I highly recommend the audio on this one!!🙌🙌 These two are too good to pass this audio up.
This story touches on guilt, burdens, forgiveness & one's self-contemplation, not easy stuff, people, but somehow Jackie weaves humor into it & you find yourself smiling & giggling If you love romantic suspense doused with humor & a lot of feels, check this audio out. Jackie does it right! She also enjoys her spicy scenes, did I mention that!😂😂 The spice is spicin' and it's hot!🔥
Thanks, Jackie Walker and Home Cooked Books, for the advanced listening copy. You had me in cackling once again!
Dual narration Steamy Romantic suspense Rivals to lovers Workplace Found family **kidnapping/trafficking
📚Story Summary and Review📚 This was such an exhilarating blend of suspense, romance, and humor that kept me hooked from the first page to the last. The story follows Mia, a former operative who has left "the agency" and is now aiming to join Redleg's intelligence division. Unafraid to use her cunning and resourceful “inner pimp”, Mia is a brainy, sassy, and strong heroine who does whatever it takes to gather the intel she needs.
Enter Cal, a former ranger who finds himself on a new assignment he's less than thrilled about—especially after an unforgettable one-night stand. The chemistry between Mia and Cal is palpable from the get-go. Cal is the quintessential tough yet sweet hero, a strong protector with a soft heart, especially when it comes to his momma. His relationship with his mother, who is battling dementia, adds a touching layer to the story, highlighting the real-life struggles and emotional depth that many face.
The suspense and spice is on point! The action-packed plot kept me on the edge of my seat, eager to find out what would happen next. The witty humor and banter between Mia and Cal add a delightful lightness, balancing the intense moments perfectly.
I was especially impressed with how the author handled the subplot involving Cal’s mother, shedding light on the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia. This aspect of the story was both moving and realistically portrayed, adding depth to Cal's character and making the stakes feel even higher. I work in this world and usual dislike reading it in books and I thought it was very well done!
🎧❤️Audiobook Review❤️🎧 Jason and Erin were absolute narrator perfection! Their delivery was infused with deep emotion and compassion, bringing both characters to life in a profoundly moving way. I especially loved how they skillfully handled all the wit in the story, adding a delightful charm, and turned up the heat on the spicy scenes with just the right touches. These two consistently pull me into the book, making me feel for the characters and fall in love with the story all over again. And Jason with a Russian accent? Say no more! So much talent!
Thank you to Jackie Walker and Home cooked books for the advance listen. It was my pleasure!
**These are my own honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.
I was actually very annoyed when I felt like I am nearly at the end of the book then checked and turned out just at 50%.
First - inner thoughts. They were actually chatting with the reader, making jokes and snarky comments. Doesn't sound bad, does it? But when it's overused - and it was heavily overused here - pretty angering. Yeah, in Fleabag they used it a lot, but that was a tv show and there it was really entertaining, but here in this book, I disliked it very much.
Cal - the author painted him as a 'vanilla', 'mama's boy', 'honest, self-less' BINGO guy, but he was stuborn not getting the right help for his mother who had Alzheimer, dangering her, refusing to find solution to their situations, finding memories, subjects like her mother's car and house more important than the well being of her. E.g. not wanting to sell the house to get the money needed for a nursing home/living in carer for her mom because that was his childhood home and it holds happy memories.
I don't even understand why he didn't informed his boss about the state of his mom's health so probably he could get more flexible working hours maybe support as well??? Dumbass.
Getting angry at the woman who got the position he wanted. Get a grip! She was waaay more talented and qualified in that area then him, it was earned! And again, Cal didn't inform his employer about the family situation that he desperately needed an office job and more salary. Dumbass, again.
Sex - I'm a bit confused about what does exactly count as 'vanilla sex', I need to google it now. I always thought that it means boring sex. Well then, I'm boring. Not a fan of butt plugs, anal, degradatory stuffs, choking with a p*nis 🤷
Mia - defo needs therapy. To blame herself because her sister got raped by Mia's boyfriend and going nearly no-contact with her family, never talking it out.... She was painted clever, cunning, aand caring, intuitive, but didn't fully do her homework about the mole at the FBI although claiming that she's always doing a full backgroung check on EVERYBODY but not the leader of the FBI chick...amatour. And the instant girl-crushes with the female characters... Or am I just too autistic for this???
I only finished it because I was curious who was the mole. Not worth it.
I hope the next book on my tbrl list will be much better and I can forget this one quickly.
To think it through I need to take away one star making it 2 🌟 reading material. Sorry not sorry.
