682 books131 followersThe Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

تحاكي هذه المغامرة واقعة تاريخية ، حيث كان هناك بالفعل رجل يدعى " مارس جوشوا" في عام ١٨٤٠ قد أنعم على نفسه لقب امبراطور الولايات المتحدة ، وحامي حمى المكسيك...والطريف في الأمر إن أهالي " سان فرانسيسكو" بعثوا له برقيات بتوقيعات رؤساء الدول ، هذا غير البيانات التي كانت تُصدر باسم الامبراطور...
تراه كان مجنوناً حقاً...!!
لم أضحك كثيراً مع " لاكي لوك" في هذه المغامرة..

Gebt dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist …
Der Wilde Westen, wenngleich sein Bild sich zum größten Teil aus Mythen zusammensetzte, war in der Tat nicht arm an skurrilen Figuren, und Joshua A. Norton dürfte wohl eine der skurrilsten von ihnen gewesen sein, denn als dieser englischstämmige Geschäftsmann eines Tages infolge eines mißglückten Geschäfts sein Vermögen verlor, verlor er darüber hinaus auch gleich seinen Verstand – oft findet man ja Geld und Verstand eher selten beieinander – und hielt sich fortab für den Kaiser der Vereinigten Staaten. In Der Kaiser von Amerika greifen Morris und Goscinny dieses Motiv auf, doch ist ihr Kaiser von Amerika nicht etwa ein bemitleidenswerter armer Spinner, sondern, als der erfolgreiche Rancher Dean Smith, ein bemitleidenswerter reicher Spinner, dessen ehemalige Cowboys aus reinem Opportunismus kaiserliche Soldaten spielen, denn die Bezahlung ist gut und der Dienst vergleichsweise leicht.
Während die Bevölkerung von Grass Town in Smith einfach ein lustiges Original sieht und ihm im Namen diverser europäischer Potentaten Briefe schreibt, erkennt Lucky Luke, der zu einer Privataudienz auf die Ranch … äh, in den kaiserlichen Palast vorgelassen wird, sofort die Gefahr, die darin besteht, daß Smith über moderne Kanonen und eine gutausgerüstete Kavallerie verfügt. Ironischerweise bringt er aber gerade dadurch, daß er dem Sheriff von Grass Town auf diese Gefahr hinweist, das von ihm befürchtete Unheil in Gang, denn im Gefängnis sitzt gerade – auch dies ironischerweise durch Zutun unseres Helden – der Raufbold und Gesetzlose Buck Ritchie, der natürlich sofort hellhörig wird, als Luke aufgebracht von den niegelnagelneuen Kanonen des Kaisers erzählt. So macht er sich nach seiner Freilassung denn auch sofort zu Seiner Durchlaucht auf, um sie davon zu überzeugen, die Stadt mores zu lehren.
Wie üblich fällt auch dieses Abenteuer Lucky Lukes durch feinen Humor, running gags und die tadellos funktionierende Interaktion zwischen dem Cowboy und seinem edlen Roß auf, doch hinter all dem verbergen sich dieses Mal auch dunklere Töne. So gibt es nicht nur die bereits oben angesprochene tragische Ironie, die zum eigentlichen Motor der Geschichte wird, sondern Kaiser Smith und sein ebenso verblendeter, weitaus bösartigerer ehemaliger Koch Gates sind nicht eigentlich wirkliche Schurken, sondern Verrückte, die von einem Schurken gesteuert werden, und können einem deshalb auch leid tun. Am erschreckendsten allerdings ist freilich das Verhalten der braven Bürger von Grass Town, die in dem Moment, in dem sich das Blatt zugunsten von Smith I. zu wenden beginnt, sofort kaisertreue Untertanen und richtige Hofschranzen werden und nicht eine Sekunde lang zögern, Lucky Luke und den prinzipientreuen Richter Barnes an den Kaiser auszuliefern. Später allerdings tun sie alle so, als sei niemals etwas Ungewöhnliches vorgefallen. Auch wenn dieser Opportunismus keinen wahrhaften Schaden angerichtet hat, so merkt man deutlich, daß Morris und Goscinny hier alles andere als augenzwinkernd bei der Sache sind – und so verwundert es auch niemanden, daß unser Lieblingscowboy froh ist, wenn er schließlich wieder mit Jolly Jumper in den Sonnenunter … aber das kennen wir ja alle.

Another very loosely historical volume in the series, this one somewhat based on the man who called himself Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Defender of Mexico. He was a San Francisco eccentric who dressed in various approximations of European military garb, and wandered around making proclamations.
The renamed Emperor Smith looks and behaves quite a bit like the original, but Morris and Goscinny relocated him to a small town in the wild west. By making him rich as well as eccentric, it gives people a better excuse to buy into his looniness, and gives him more wherewithal to create chaos in his wake. Of course, there are all kinds of crazy, and not all of them are benign, so things eventually go wrong.
Much of the humor in this volume is political and social in nature, more sophisticated than the slapstick which fills most of the Lucky Luke volumes. Younger readers will miss some of this, but older ones will find that aspect to be an interesting take on human nature.

Hacía más de 30 años que no leía varios Lucky Luke de corrido como solía hacer de niño, y compruebo con mucho agrado que ha “envejecido” de muy buena manera.
Actualmente considero imprescindible que los guiones hayan sido escritos por Goscinny (muchos lo han escrito) ya que su originalidad, chispa y humor son incomparables.
Pero lo que sin dudas me hizo fanático de Lucky Luke fue su dibujante Morris.
Su trazo caricaturesco es claro y sencillo pero a la vez detallado y con fondos cuidados.
Narrativamente su arte, que a esta altura ya era completamente maduro, roza lo cinematográfico. En este estilo, muy europeo, es mi preferido.
Recuerdo que siempre elegía los números protagonizados por “Los Dalton & Rantanplan” pero para esta primera tanda de 4 (El Pie tierno, El Emperador Smith, La Curación de los Dalton & El Jinete Blanco) de la nueva edición de Planeta y de Libros del Zorzal elijo esta tapa.
Fue el primero (y único, creo) que me regalaron a los 11 o 12 años y conservo un recuerdo muy especial de ese momento.
Lucky Luke y por supuesto Tintín son mis preferidos del comic Franco-Belga.

(PT) Lucky Luke chega a Grass Town, onde descobre que a cidade tem uma excenticidade: o maior rancheiro da região, Smith, decidiu nomear ele próprio como sendo Smith I, imperedor dos Estados Unidos. Teria a sua piada, mas quando Lucky Luke descobre que ele tem soldados e canhões, junta dois mais dois e fica com a terrivel sensação de que ele pode ser chalupa, mas os seus subordinados... não. E quando Buck Ritche, assaltante de bancos, entra em cena, o caldo arrisca-se a entornar.
"O Imperador Smith" é provavelmente um dos melhores livros de Lucky Luke. Escrito em 1976 por Morris e Goscinny, tem como base o "imperador Norton I", personagem excêntrica de São Francisco que granjeou simpatia tal que quando morreu, em 1880, aos 61 anos, dez mil pessoas acorreram ao seu funeral.
Mas o livro mostra outra coisa que, sob a capa da comédia, mostra algo perigoso: o que é ter o poder nas mãos de um louco. As armas - aqui, Smith dispunha de um exército - e o menosprezo das pessoas perante alguém que poderia causar mal, se caísse nas mãos erradas. E de como as pessoas, quando esse momento aconteceu, mudaram de lado só para salvar a pele. Não é um livro qualquer, não é uma banda desenhada qualquer. É um aviso, e nos tempos que correm, é arrepiantemente universal.

Luke przemierzając Dziki Zachód, doświadczył już wielu różnych dziwactw. Nawet jednak jego potrafi zaskoczyć iście królewski orszak pośrodku niczego. Okazuje się, że wiózł on okolicznego farmera, który stał się obrzydliwie bogaty. Masa pieniędzy i ogromna fascynacja Napoleonem sprawiły, że postanowił on sam ogłosić się cesarzem Stanów Zjednoczonych. Na dodatek wszyscy mieszkańcy miasteczka Grass Town traktują go jak prawdziwego władcę. Ciekawość sprawia, że Luke postanawia się tam zatrzymać, a to zaś prowadzi do wielu nieprzewidzianych sytuacji i kłopotów (gdzie LL będzie musiał stawić czoła nawet całej armii).
Seria autorstwa René Goscinnego od zawsze potrafiła mocno przyciągać uwagę czytelnika. Nawet na tym tle potrafi się jednak wyróżnić album Lucky Luke: Cesarz Smith, w którym pełno jest gagów i oryginalnych scenariuszowych pomysłów, które sprawiają, że nie można się oderwać od lektury.
Scenarzysta bawi się tu konwencją westernu, tworząc satyryczną opowieść o władzy, pieniądzu i demokracji. Wykorzystuje on do tego wzorce z autentycznych postaci, w tym przypadku jest to samozwańczy cesarz Joshua Abraham Norton.
Smith za pomocą majątku potrafi zjednać sobie przychylność ludzi. Mieszkańcy, początkowo są tym zachwyceni, a on sam wydaje się być nieszkodliwym dziwakiem. Wystarczy jednak mały bodziec, aby zmienić jego zachowanie, co z kolei sprawia, że ludzie stają się ofiarami jego „władzy”.
Pod lekką i przyjemną warstwą humoru twórca porusza więc kilka głębszych i złożonych kwestii. Wątki te są doskonale przemyślane i z pewnością zostaną one docenione przez starszego czytelnika. Goscinny porusza tu ważne kwestie społeczne i polityczne, skłaniając czytelników do refleksji nad naturą władzy i wpływem bogactwa na jednostkę....

Joshua Abraham Norton lost his Sanity after loosing everything on a finanzial Missjudgement.
As an result, the Man start belifing he was the Emperor of the United States.
Lucky Luke made a Story about what could have happened if such a Person lost his Sanity over a great Income, and could actually live like a Emperor.
Emperor Smith is a good Hearted peacefull Person, as such no one took him serious, when he suddenly attacked thse City, motivated by the manipulations of an Desperado.
There are multble People getting caught in the Illusion of the Emperor, the Sheriff, and the Publisher, and other Town Folks. First out of fear, later out of Greed, so are the Soldiers just actors, doing what there told for a nice Pay, whitout questioning it.
At the End his Cook lost his sanity besides him, but this Cook is not as good natured as the Emperor, and his paranoid, and autoritarian Nature poses one of the biggest treaths.
In the End all is just a Illusion, the big court ball is just a regular Day in the Saloon just later in the Evening and whit silly Costumes. This little Performances helped whit the absurdity.
In a way the Situation escalated, because no one understood Smith, how hes more then Playing.
But no one could help him whit his Struggles in that Timeperiod.
Well no Idea where this somber Tone come from, its certainly not a deep story.
Its dump fun, but it had a bit of a deeper Ideology burrowed in its core.
How a silly, stupid Ideology could be something to laugth, until you realize this Ideology had powerfull People behind it to get enforced. And here will allways be one Group of Oppurtunists who follow absolutely everyone, as long as there profit from it, and stay away from there wrath.

Tadinya bukan siapa-siapa, lalu kaya mendadak, kemudian jadi gila, dan mengangkat diri menjadi raja alias kaisar alias emperor. Hmmm ... cerita yang juga sudah tidak asing di negara ini, kan? Yang ngaku nabi atau keturunan nabi juga banyak ... yuck!

Penduduk tidak menganggapnya bahaya meski sang kaisar menyewa pasukan bersenjata sebagai pengawal. Mereka justru menjadikannya bahan tertawaan. Bahkan mengakui dirinya sebagai kepala negara dari seluruh dunia. Koran lokal setempat mempublikasi Deklerasi Kemerdekaannya.

I would think this is a take on 'Emperor' Norton, who is here transplanted from San Francisco to the Wild West and given a fortune. One of the very best Lucky Lukes. The humour is excellent, as well as both the story line and the drawing. As in most of the best Lucky Lukes, Luke himself is less prominent than usual
