The third volume in Neon Hemlock's yearly series celebrating the breadth and variety of queer speculative fiction across the genres of fantasy, science fiction, horror, and everywhere in between.
Featuring Rebecca Cuthbert, M.S. Dean, Dominique Dickey, Anja Hendrikse Liu, Ruth Joffre, Wen-yi Lee, Ian Muneshwa, RJ Mustafa, Amy Nagopaleen, Crystal Odelle, Y.M. Resnik, Bianca Sayan, M. Shaw, Samir Sirk Morató, Carlie St. George, Xauri'EL Zwaan, Bogi Takács, Kristina Ten & Izzy Wasserstein.
The majority of these stories aren't as developed or polished as the work you'll find in most "Best Of" anthologies, but I understand why: - While stories about queer characters and/or by queer authors have become fairly commonplace in the speculative fiction market over the last 10-15 years, not all of those stories are necessarily "queer speculative fiction" as a genre, so this anthology is drawing from a very small pool of work. Kudos to the editors for focusing on truly queer storytelling. - Also, instead of focusing strictly on the quality of craft, etc., the editors aimed to capture the breadth and diversity of queer speculative fiction being published, and of the publications publishing it (again, kudos).
My favorite stories: - "Dick Pig" (a finalist for the Nebula, Locust, and Shirley Jackson awards), by Ian Muneshwar - "My Dad Bought a Space Shuttle," by M. Shaw
And a shout-out to the following for their excellent concepts: - "B-ing," by Crystal Odelle - "Drowning Songs," by M.S. Dean
Somehow, I appear to be the first to review this lovely collection of queer speculative fiction short stories??
I really enjoy, and always look forward to, these annual anthologies from Neon Hemlock Press, which have introduced me to a number of wonderful writers (both new on the scene and new to me).
Like almost all anthologies, some of these stories resonated better with me than others, but it was overall a very high-quality collection with a lot of diversity in form, subject, and approach. My favorite stories were “Drowning Songs,” “15 Eulogies Scribbled Inside a Hello Kitty Notebook,” “Sheri, At This Very Moment,” and “We’ll Always Have Enceladus.”
Pick this up and discover some wonderful queer new worlds!
