This book is a gem! Both astute and tender, it is not just a “good read,” it is a transformative one. The author, Summer Joy Gross, skillfully integrates findings from attachment theory, neurobiology, and contemplative practice, to bring hope to all of us who have struggled some with the vague sense that a God who promises to be near, present, attuned…feels more distant around the edges. More theological concept than living Person. Or, if a Person, one who is preoccupied, judgmental, unpredictable.
Summer Joy gently leads the reader into an understanding of how their earliest experiences in relationships have literally been woven into their neurology, and may have led to various “insecure attachment” styles that impact all their connections, with self, the world, and GOD. And then, she shares the good news …. that repair and restoration are possible. Taking the learnings from attachment theory and science, she demonstrates how contemplative spiritual practices can actually offer the experience of relational encounters with the living God. And those encounters, repeated through time, can lead to an unmistakable sense of “secure attachment” to a God who has been there all along, attuned, beckoning….and longing to heal those ancient attachment wounds. Always available, ever present, and longing for us. After laying the foundation of attachment and God, the book then offers a feast of spiritual practices to ground the learning in experience.
I myself am a therapist, familiar with attachment theory and with the neuroscience that informs it. I have seen the healing that comes through the offering of a secure attachment through time to patients whose early experiences were less than optimal. On a human level. But when I recently came across Summer’s work, I was blown away. Contemplative practice has been part of my own formation for awhile, but Summer’s explaining how those practices can forge a whole new experience of attachment with God, opened my eyes - and my heart - to His engaged, attentive, personal love in a new way. They are now far more than “practices,” they are encounters. Encounters that are changing my life.
The Emmanuel Promise is the real thing. It rings with the voice of its author … with the compassion and wisdom of a pastor and a spiritual director, the authority of one steeped in theory, science, and biblical truth, and the vulnerability and power of one who is a fellow traveller, sharing bravely her own story. But, finally, it is not just Summer’s voice that rings through these pages. It is the unmistakeable voice of Emmanuel … inviting us, calling us home. This book feels like gift … from Him, to us.
