Cold Threat
Christian Romantic suspense
#2 in the Ryland and St. Clair series

The weather isn't the only thing 'cold' in St. Louis this winter!

Suffering from PTSD after a case went horribly wrong and unable to continue as a behavioural analyst for the FBI, River Ryland moves to St. Louis for a fresh start. In addition to being closer to her aging mother, River is pulled by the invitation to start a detective agency with her former FBI partner, Tony St. Clair.

As Tony’s dad, Head Detective Ray St. Clair is edging towards retirement, he wants to tie up loose ends and needs fresh eyes to look over some of his cold cases. Tony and River are given a cold case from 24 years ago, featuring the Snowman Killer. As they dig into the files, they soon realize that the killer is closer than they think. Can they uncover his identity and stop him before he strikes again?

A few things to consider:

1) It can stand alone. I unknowingly jumped into this series at book two…but didn’t realize it until I’d finished the book. So, if you’re wondering if it can stand alone…it worked for me. That being said, I enjoyed it immensely and will be reading book 1 and putting in a pre-order for book 3.

2) It features a serial killer. It wasn’t creepy. He randomly appeared in the narrative and readers get to see things from his point of view, but I couldn’t figure out who it was until closer to the end. I loved this POV as it increased the tension immensely.

3) It’s a Christian fiction novel. It’s a clean read (language and romance) and with references to verses from the Bible.

Although the theme of this book is being ‘lost,’ it also touches on:
🔎 questioning true humility
🔎 dealing with immense guilt
🔎 fighting evil
🔎 vengeance
🔎 forgiveness; how you forgive someone when you don’t feel like it.
🔎 letting go and letting God; putting things in His hands

I appreciated the point that wisdom from God is always peaceful, but most often our reactions to the wisdom aren’t.

The treacherous circumstances, tension, mystery, and love interest held my attention. River’s questioning faith and the manner in which the author dealt with it, was the ribbon that tied it all together. The masterful plotting, authentic characterization and interaction, and chilling suspense had me putting this new-to-me author on my auto-read list.

I was gifted this copy by Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Nancy Mehl writes fiction with a strong Christian message. Two former FBI agents work together at their private detective agency. They are seeking a killer who kills victims and then confuses the crime scene by burning everything. Not a bad story but a rather quick ending. Recommended.

My thanks to the author, Nancy Mehl, and the publisher, Bethany House, for my copy of this book. #Goodreads Giveaway

Happy New Release!

LOVED this book. Her writing, characters, raw emotion, chilling suspense, and honesty are perfect!

This is the second book, It can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the first book.

Christmassy atmosphere. As the snow starts falling, the Snowman seeks revenge.

Tony's father, Head Detective Ray St. Clair, is nearing retirement and he wants to close some of his cold cases. He seeks Tony and River's help in investigating one such case from twenty years ago, which involves the Snowman Killer. As they delve into the case files, they discover that the killer may be closer than they initially thought.

This book is a fast-paced and engaging read with characters that are sure to touch your heart. The writing style is simple yet effective, making the overall flow of the story feel very smooth. The suspense plot is intriguing, providing glimpses of who might be behind it all, but not revealing the true culprit until almost the very end. The final twist was completely unexpected and added extra excitement to the story. POV: River, Tony, and the serial killer.

Christian fiction and suspense with a hint of romance...The book's theme revolves around guilt and the process of forgiveness despite the lack of willingness.

This is a captivating read with well-written characters, engaging dialogue, and a thrilling plot. I'm eagerly anticipating the next book.

Cold Threat by Nancy Mehl - (Book 2 in the Ryland and St. Clair Series) - 4.5 Stars
BLOG POST HERE.

I will continue to say how AMAZING Nancy Mehl's Christian Suspense books are. She always blows me away with her writing, characters, on the edge of your seat feeling and the faith content throughout the story! This is book 2 in the Ryland and St. Clair Series, with book 1 being Cold Pursuit. These books are PERFECT for Winter Time and make you have that "I HAVE TO KNOW" feeling where you just really want to pick it up and finish it so quickly! This is the 5th Nancy Mehl book I have read and needless to say, she is my favorite Christian Suspense author now.

In this book, we have a solid story where River and Tony are back at it in their jobs as private investigators/profilers with a serial killer resurfacing after 20 years. 20 years ago, several people were murdered in Des Moines and the only evidence left behind was a snowman ornament hanging on a tree in their front lawns. A suspect was put behind bars and Tony's father, who works for the FBI, thought the case was closed...but was it? With new killings occurring, it appears the "Snowman" killer is back. Can Tony and River figure this old cold case out that Tony's father worked on so long ago?

My favorite part of this story is seeing so much of Tony and River working together and seeing the romantic emotions start to form and take root. We know they care about each other and it was great to see. While this is mostly classified as a general suspense and romance is not a main thread in this story, we saw more romance than you might normally see in a Nancy Mehl book from their feelings standpoint and I loved that! I love how River and Tony work so well together and they would do anything to protect one another. I also loved the scenes with Tony's family and getting to know his parents and seeing the journey his sister went on.

The faith journey River specifically went on in this series was beautiful to see. She is really coming in to her own and trusting God in everything. This is truly an honorable mention for my top books of the year - 4.5 stars just because I wanted a bit more detail in the ending when "everything was going down" with our killer to see how it played out, but overall SO SO good and I can't wait to see how Book 3 ends!

Thank you to Bethany House for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow. Wow. Wow wow WOW.

That basically sums up my reaction to the reveal of the serial killer’s identity. Gobsmacked once again, as I always am at some point in Mehl’s suspense novels. I thought I had it figured out this time – I should have known better haha. The author weaves such a delightfully complex plot that keeps me glued to the page and in awe of her ability to do so. In fact, I love it even more when I’m miles off base about the killer (which is almost always the case with her books) because I read so many suspense novels that it’s really hard to catch me off guard. And Nancy Mehl always does. Always. It just proves again how talented she is at crafting suspense.

I also really enjoyed the further development we see in River and Tony’s characters and their partnership … including a bit more hope for a romance between them in the future. The layers we added and further explored in Cold Threat fit well with what we learned about them in book one, and I thought River’s faith growth was especially meaningful while staying organic to her character. Tony’s parents are a delight – I absolutely loved his mom Beth and her penchant to feed everyone always. Lots of family banter that added well-timed levity to ease the tension of hunting a serial killer, but there were some very touching subthreads as well here. Also, Tony’s childhood nickname? Adorable.

Bottom Line: Cold Threat is another stellar suspense offering by author Nancy Mehl, with layered characters and several surprising twists. River and Tony make such a good pair, in life and in work, and I enjoyed watching their friendship deepen as they worked with Tony’s dad to solve a haunting cold case. The faith thread is touching and relatable, and it fits easily with the character development without distracting from the plot. The series arc of the obsessed serial killer after River is definitely still in play even though it isn’t the main focus of this book, and I look forward to watching how that all ends up in the final novel.

“Seems when we realize what Christ went through to forgive us, we really don’t have any reason not to forgive others.”
A thrilling, suspense filled book that teaches lessons that we need to learn.
As River and Tony try to start their private investigation agency, Tony’s father, Ray, asks for their help. River and Tony travel from St. Louis to Burlington, Iowa to look into a puzzling case Ray would like solved before he retires. But danger ramps up as they profile the UnSub.
I am glad for the way the characters rely on their faith in God to define their lives and do their jobs. A big theme is forgiveness and how each one realizes that since Christ did so much for us, how could we not forgive others. This was played out in the family dynamics of both families. I am thankful for the clear Christian message contained in this entertaining, suspenseful novel. I was absolutely surprised at who the culprit was. And there is more to come because while one threat was dispelled, another is still present. Cannot wait for book three.

Another exciting thrill ride in the Ryland and St. Clair series! I was eagerly anticipating the continuation of River’s and Tony’s story after the first book Cold Pursuit. This book was just as intense with a devious new serial killer known as “The Snowman” and the continued threat of River’s stalker always present in the background. It’s an edge of your seat, inspirational, romantic suspense that’s extremely hard to put down.

This story can be read as a standalone since Nancy Mehl expertly reintroduces River Ryland, an ex-FBI behavioral analyst, and her former partner Tony St. Clair with enough background so new readers can quickly be brought up to speed. They’ve teamed up to form their own private investigative firm after suffering serious side effects from a particularly harrowing case where River was nearly killed and Tony injured.

In this story, River’s accompanying Tony to his childhood home at Christmas time to help his law enforcement father with a case that’s been troubling him for over 20 years. The serial killer murdered his victims and then set fire to their houses leaving the same type of snowman ornament at the scene of the crime. Though a man was convicted of the murders, fires with the same MO are happening where Tony’s parents live in Burlington, Iowa. Is this a copycat, or did the real killer escape punishment?

I absolutely enjoyed this story! I loved seeing River and Tony grow closer. There was a hint of romance in the first book, and it’s explored more here. I also liked seeing the dynamics of Tony’s family. There are some who blame River for what happened to Tony, as she does herself. Her need to find faith, forgiveness, and peace from the past are issues River grapples with throughout the story. I love her relationship with Tony and am definitely cheering for these two to find love and a happily ever after.

The investigation surrounding the serial killer was intense, especially when there are times we get his perspective. The ending was particularly nail-biting and I was on pins and needles wondering how everything would be resolved. It’s a fast-paced, suspenseful sequel not only with this serial killer, but with River’s stalker popping up throughout.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series! It’s a definite must read for Christian romantic suspense fans. I received an advanced complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Partners in Crime Tours. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

An exciting continuation in the Ryland and St. Clair series!

River and Tony were both sympathetic characters whom I enjoyed "meeting" in the first book and getting to know better in this second book. River's faith journey was realistic, and I liked that she didn't know everything right away. Speaking of the faith content ... I appreciated that it played a big part in the story, but it leaned a bit too charismatic for me.

The plot had plenty of suspenseful moments and high stakes and kept my attention throughout. Sometimes stories that feature a serial killer as the villain creep me out, but I didn't find this to be one of the creepy ones. I appreciated that Nancy Mehl kept both the language and romance clean.

Overall, Cold Threat was an intriguing read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and suspense with a side of romance. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

We are coming back with another adventure of Ryland and St. Clair. In this second story we are following our private investigators as they try to solve a 20 year old arson case. The killer has come back but the police think that it can't be the same arsonist. Will Ryland and St. Clair find out who it is in time before he strikes again?

Nancy Mehl is one of my favorite authors for mysteries mixed with faith. Her characters are true to life, with real struggles in their faith and learn to lean on the Lord during hard times. I was surprised by the ending and didn't guess who did it.

Nancy Mehl crafts unique characters including her villains and I love that! This slow-burn suspense keeps you turning pages (or listening as in my case). The narrator did a very good job! Super easy to listen to. I’m looking forward to the third book and finding out who the overarching villain of the series is! Also I want to eat so much fudge right now. 😁🤷🏻‍♀️

This was my first book by the author, and I really appreciated that, even though this was the second book in the series (and I haven’t read the first yet), it felt like a stand-alone novel and did a great job on recapping book one’s main events so that I could easily track what was happening. There were some really great Christian themes in here, and as far as the romance goes, you can’t get much cleaner than this. However, the pacing of this book was really…slow. Nothing really happened until 90% into the book, when the big reveal + showdown came, but even then, it was very anti-climatic and happened so quickly. For a thriller, this book didn’t have much until the very end for a few pages, which was disappointing. My three-star review is a reflection of the slow pacing and uneventful plot and nothing against the content. This book was super clean and, again, had some great themes in there :)

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC of Cold Threat. A positive review was not required, only my honest opinion. All thoughts are expressly my own.

Twenty years ago, a serial arsonist known as the Snowman murdered several people before torching their homes in Des Moines, Iowa. Two decades later, it seems that the Snowman is back, this time in Burlington, but the police aren’t convinced it’s the same killer. Private investigators and former behavioral analysts with the FBI, River Ryland and Tony St. Clair, are brought in by Tony’s detective father to construct a profile of the arsonist so they can find him before any more homes are burned or lives are lost.☃️

Nancy Mehl’s more recent books have been a little hit or miss for me, but I really enjoyed this second book in her Ryland & St. Clair series! This book picks up right after the end of book one, and it had me hooked from the prologue. I love a good psychotic villain, and Nancy definitely delivers on that (twice over!). I think River and Tony are great partners, and I appreciate the big focus on their faith, especially for River. While this is definitely romantic suspense, the romance is a very slowww burn. This is book two, and while some feelings are admitted to, nothing has been acted on so far. So, if you prefer more suspense than romance in your books, you’d probably like this series. This was a really great book, and I can’t wait to read the conclusion to this story later this year!🧡

This is the second novel in a series and like the first one, has as much about the characters and personal lives of the investigators as it does solving a murder. The novel includes quite a bit of character thought and dialogue about previous events in their lives and how they are dealing with them. This novel also includes a very clear and prominent Christian message of faith.

Mehl covers several issues in this novel including whether Christians should be in law enforcement and how God might give us information through dreams. Forgiveness is also an important topic.

While there are hints of danger included, there is little suspense until the very end. Most of the investigative part of the story deals with River and Tony creating a profile while visiting his parents and helping his father solve an old murder. The murderer may again be active so the investigative duo is under pressure to identify the villain before more die.

This is a good novel for readers who like one focusing on the characters as much or more than the investigative work involved. I am invested in the ongoing story of River and Tony and the possibility of a budding romance so will be looking for the next in the series.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Being on edge never had more meaning than while reading Cold Threat by Nancy Mehl. With three different points of view, readers are taken on a chilling journey through the minds of River Ryland, Tony St. Clair, and the serial killer known as the Snowman. The horrific murders of innocent victims will send shivers down your spine and readers are taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

Former FBI profilers River and Tony team up to help solve a 20-year-old crime assisting Tony's father who heads the investigation. The setting of a small town in Iowa adds an extra layer of fear and urgency as the snowstorm looms and they race against time to catch the killer before he strikes again.

Despite being the second book in a series, Cold Threat can stand alone and provide enough background information for new readers to fully immerse themselves in the story. The novel perfectly blends elements of suspense and Christian fiction, creating a thrilling yet thought-provoking read.

As secrets are slowly revealed and relationships develop between characters, readers will find themselves fully invested in every aspect of Cold Threat. Themes of forgiveness and healing add depth to this already gripping plotline. While avoiding excessive gore, Cold Threat still manages to captivate with its intense intrigue and ever-mounting danger. As each clue is uncovered, we get closer to catching the elusive serial killer. The well-written characters add an extra layer of enjoyment to this gripping adventure that will leave you wanting more by the end.

I loved this book! Truly great storytelling. The mysteries are complex and keep the reader on the edge, waiting for what’s next. I especially love how the author effortlessly weaves the gospel message into the storyline. The Christian message is presented in a way that helps the reader knows how to apply the spiritual truths to their own lives as well. This is Christian fiction at its best!

I’m a big fan of Nancy Mehl and usually love her books! But this one fell a little flat. There wasn’t enough action and too much relational stuff. Tony’s family was way too idyllic. I know fiction can be better than real life, but no wife/mom is actually like Beth. She just didn’t seem real. And all River and Tony did was rework their profile and complain about not being licensed PI’s in Iowa. Oh, and make lovey eyes at each other behind each other’s backs. I’ll get the next book in this series, but I’m hoping it’s back to more action and less lovey dovey.

In this thrilling edge of your seat story, We have a serial killer. These are my favorite kind of books these days. this serial killer likes to kill when it snowing, he likes leaving a little gifts behind..

This was totally an Fascinating story, I feel like the story picked up where the first book left off. And I totally loved that first book.

River ryland. And Tony St Clair.
Perfect investigators.
They bring the story to life.

This book can be read as a standalone.
You don't have to read the first book in order to read this one and enjoy it immensely..

My favorite part of the book Was when, The story came out How tony got his nickname.
That honestly made me Giggle . Such a funny part.

But this was such a great book.

River Ryland and Tony St. Clair must work alongside Tony's detective father to prove that the real Snowman murderer is once again active after 20 years and not the man accused and found guilty. Wow! Twists and turns, numerous clues that lead nowhere. This killer is very smart but if they keep profiling and updating their new, not known before evidence, it all comes together but... well, see if you can figure it out before the final showdown!

Cold Threat ( Ryland and St. Clair #2 )

Cold Threat is book two in the Ryland and St. Clair series. This is book two, but it can be read as a stand-alone. This is another nail biting suspense that will have you glued to your seat. This is another great suspense thriller that you do not want to miss. I was hooked right from the start and did not want to put it down. River and Tony are trying to get their private investigation agency up when Tony gets a phone call from his dad for help. Twenty year ago case seems to be starting up again. Loved River and Tony working together. Can they help his dad? I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House. All opinions are my own.

Nancy Mehl knows how to take you on a journey of mystery and suspense and on a faith journey as well. Nancy Mehl is what some call an auto buy for me. If she is the author of a book I don’t already have and I find it I will get it without needing to read the blurb. If her name is on a book by another author because she is endorsing it that book is going in my pile. Not only does she write spine tingling books but she knows what to look for in the books she reads.
I will say I was blessed to receive my copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I would have gladly paid full price!

Nancy Mehl’s Cold Threat is the thrilling continuation of her Ryland and St. Clair series and it’s awesome! River and Tony are up against a sadistic snowy killer dubbed The Snowman, but friendly he is not.

Cold Threat by Nancy Mehl has a spine-chilling synopsis that I could not wait to dive into. Yes, there are moments of high tension and full of suspense. But as the story progresses, River and Tony spend a lot of time at Tony’s parents’ house trying to help Tony’s father with a Cold Case that has bothered him for years. Of course, the clock is ticking until the next climactic moment. But the characters spend so much time trying to come to terms with what happened in the past and River wants to know Tony’s parents better, to me, the suspense element at times was shoved to the back of the stove. One thing I really did enjoy about Mehl’s story is that she starts to show feelings between Tony and River, but she is writing a three-book series, so they don’t jump into an engagement or marriage by the end of the first novel. Readers are actually seeing their romance blossom across the pages of the series. Plus, being the same hero and heroine in all three books make developing the characters a little more realistic. The first time, anyone meets somebody they don’t know everything about them right away. It takes some time. I like this idea. As for the setting, I do love that it is set around the time period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not actual Christmas novel, but in the cold part of the year. Overall, Cold Threat by Nancy Mehl does have a wonderful suspenseful storyline, but at times, the suspense element did not seem that important. I do love the development of the characters and the romance across the three-book series.

I received a complimentary copy of Cold Threat by Nancy Mehl from Bethany House Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

It’s always a sign you’re in for a good read when the Prologue hooks you before you even get to the heart of the story. It all began twenty years ago. Several murders, a missing child and a snowman ornament.

Fast forward twenty years. The killer, The Salt River Strangler, was caught and is behind bars. But it appears he had a partner who’s come calling and the residents of Burlington, Iowa are living in fear. River and Tony are no longer with the FBI. They have their own private investigation firm. Business has been slow and River is praying for a case. When Tony’s father calls asking for help in wrapping up the twenty year old case, they can’t ignore the request for help. That old saying, “Be careful what you wish for,” comes to mind.

This is a favorite trope of mine. Cold case and new case. Both connected. It makes the mystery that much harder to figure out. The list of suspects, new and old is large. The clues are stale and fresh. The characters tasked with solving the case have matured. Moved on. And now they’re dragged back in. But with more experience now. And an immediate urgency to wrap the case up once and for all.

Cold Threat was every bit as good as the first book in the trilogy, Cold Pursuit. River’s stalker is still out there and I’ll be there to find out how the author wraps up her series.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

Wow! I loved book one in this series and hoped that book two would be good, too. It definitely was!

I listened to the audio book version of this story and really enjoyed the narrator.

The relationship between River and Tony was still strong and enduring. They were not only best friends, but also partners. I appreciated that they acknowledged that they both felt that it was possible that they might be moving toward a more than friends relationship in the future, but that patience was needed as River continued to grow in her renewed faith in God.

The case these two were working on with Tony's dad was absolutely fascinating! The author did a great job of showing how Tony and River worked through building a profile. There was a lot of back and forth with ideas, looking for anything that had been missed in the past, and even some second guessing themselves. I found it very engrossing.

I loved the straightforward discussions that happened with Tony's family as they worked through things that worried them, misplaced anger, and even simple, everyday discussions. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.
