"American culture is experiencing a continual weakening of traditional religious bodies, and hence a “disenchantment” of the world. True, traditional piety is being replaced by new forms of devotion, such as New Age spirituality. But the idiosyncratic nature of these new spiritualities makes it difficult for them to gain the “plausibility structure” that sociologists claim make our convictions seem real. This book argues that Unitarian Universalism accomplishes the unique task of combining many different spiritualities within one affirming community, thus giving each social plausibility and re-enchanting the world, reacquainting us with the Mysterious Depth of reality.
I read this as part of a group study and it was very informative and helpful for us as members of a UU congregation. It helped us to see some of the things we do right and also the things we need to work on. We didn't always agree with Mr. Grigg's presentation of the material, but it was a good jumping off point for group discussion.
