You’re never too old for an adventure…

Eve, Nessa and Molly are all in their seventies. Over the years, they’ve laughed and cried and they’ve been by each others’ sides as colleagues, flatmates and mothers. And they’ve grown old disgracefully together in their golden years…

But all good things must come to an end. As one of their trio takes her final journey, a very large glass is raised to fun, frolics and – most importantly – friendships.

Throwing their walking sticks to the wind, the glamorous grannies take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about the highlights of their shared decades – their lovely old London flat, that fateful trip to Italy and the many holidays they had together, brimming with sun, sea and romances!

And as an old secret unravels, they learn that love, forgiveness and second chances are possible whatever age you are. And that laughter really is the best medicine…

The Runaway Wife is Dee’s first (published) novel but in fact she wrote her very first book – at around seven years of age! This was a love story which she duly illustrated before sewing all the pages together up one side. Writing was what she ‘was good at’ in school and she won several essay competitions, but then life got in the way and she didn’t pick up a pen again until after retirement.

Dee left Scotland and headed for London at the beginning of the swinging sixties. After typing her way round the West End she became an air stewardess on long haul routes with BA (then BOAC) for eight years. After that she did market research at Heathrow for both the government statistics and for BA, she became a sales rep and was the receptionist at the Thames Television Studios in Teddington when they had the franchise.

She then ran a small B&B for ten years in Cornwall, where she lives with her husband. Dee has one son and two grandsons who live locally.

Her second book, The Getaway Girls, will be published in July.

Dee Macdonald is one of my favourite authors and cannot write anything but a great book in my eyes and the same is true with this new book ( although reading the acknowledgements interestingly this was the first book written ) it was flawless
A riveting story of 3 friends who initially meet at an interview to become air hostesses and then we are with them as they go through all the highs, lows, happiness and sadness of their very very full lives
The stories of their time on the planes were just fab,air travel was quite a thing back 60 years plus ago and the tales of what staff and passengers got up to were enlightening to read, every generation had its good carefree years, just in those days no one found about it 😀
I loved it all,the friendship these 3 had and their adventures and how their lives panned out
This author continues to write pure reading pleasures of books that I devour every word of

Prologue opens up with two women stood by a graveside clearly upset about losing a close friend. There is no mention of names, so we go into this story not knowing who's funeral is being held.

Two weeks before the funeral we catch up with the three main characters of this story, Eve, Vanessa and Molly. They reminisce about their lives together from the initial first meeting where they all tried for a job as airline stewardesses.

This story is one of those that you get so deeply involved in the main characters lives, that you feel like a part of their world. It's written so effortlessly and flows easily.

We get the story from each of the main characters POV, this way we get to feel a better connection towards them and feel invested in their journeys.

The Sunshine Club is a perfect feel good story. Join Eva, Molly and Vanessa as they reminisce with us about their lives.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Spoiler: this book felt like catching up with some old friends.

I had a good time reading it. It was so nice seeing the three main characters, Eve, Molly and Vanessa, grow and mature. We followed them since they were young, when they got their first job as air hostesses. What started off as rivalry becomes a nice friendship, through thick and thin.

I really enjoyed following them on this journey. They all grew so much. They each had their own struggles with love, work. Their lives were so different, but they were still there for each other. Molly ends up getting married and having 3 children with an Italian named Marco. Vanessa never fully gets over Jonny, her lover and the father of her child, even if she remarries. Eve finds a husband and has a baby, and she gets to meet the son she was forced to adopt. In their own way, all three had a happy ending.

The story is told through reminiscences throughout the years, which makes the story flow nicely. I love the way the book starts, with two women remembering one of their friends at her funeral. It is not until the end of the book when we find out who died.

I loved how unique each story was. My only issue with this book is that I expected more from their friendship. I wanted more moments with the three of them, rather than learning about their past lovers. I wanted to see how this connection between them was built, because to me, it felt a bit rushed and lacking substance.

Still, it was an easy and fun read. I still got very attached to the characters, It felt like I've known them forever, like we haven't seen each other in years and we are finally catching up.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of "The Sunshine Club" in exchange for my honest review.

As a huge fan of Ms. MacDonald's 'Kate Palmer' series I was eager to read this stand alone book from her. It did not disappoint. It was the same captivating writing that hooked me on the Kate Palmer stories.

The story starts with 2 women attending the funeral of a friend they have known for over 50 years. This time we meet Molly, Eve and Vanessa in 1964 when they all answered an ad for air stewardesses at Skyline Airlines. Vanessa Carter-Flint with her cut-glass accent, totally expected to be hired by the airline. Molly O'Hara was Irish and was convinced that she would not be hired because she was too short. She had trained as a nurse and was planning to go on to study midwifery when she saw the airline ad. She has always had dreams of emigrating to the US. Eve Muir was from Scottish but had excellent French skills having been a nanny in Paris for a year. She has a strained relationship with her mother after having her son Robert out-of-wedlock and being forced to give him up for adoption at 2 weeks old. This has affected her greatly over the years since.

When they all make it through the selection process they decide to share a flat on Bellingham Road until one of them is snapped up by a millionaire in first class.

The story is told through reminiscences in 2015 and through the years. In 1971 they have been living together for 7 years - Vanessa wants to buy a flat, Molly is getting married to Mario, an Italian that she met while having coffee in Rome, and Eve wants to set up her own decorating business and moves into a flat above the shop.

In 1982 Eve is a training stewardess/route supervisor, Vanessa is a cabin service supervisor and finds that she's having a baby at 40 with the Captain that she has been seeing for her entire career at the airline. Eve meets Andy Mason who chips away at her resolve to never marry and have children due to the trauma of having to give up Robert.

At several points in the story an unidentified young man keeps going to Eve's flat but she is never home.

All the ladies have to deal with different tragedies over the course of the book. The end of the story circles back to the beginning and we learn which of the 3 has died and which 2 were attending the funeral. A wonderful, touching story with some elements that were true to the times that they are set in.

Enjoyable

Nice read. Living in The States while some things were vert different at that time other things were not. I had always wanted to be a "stewardess" when I was younger but they were very strict here in the US about the height and weight. I was never going to be tall enough. I tried several times back in the 70's but turned down. I look at flight attendants today and sometimes shake my head. Anyway, the story is a great story of friendship, life, and events. Not going to tell any spoilers. Enjoy the read.

Let me tell you about The Sunshine Club, the lovable novel about longlasting friendship, written by Dee MacDonald. Looking at the blurb I learn that...

Throwing their walking sticks into the wind, the glamorous grannies take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about the highlights of their shared decades – their lovely old London flat, that fateful trip to Italy and the many holidays they had together, brimming with sun, sand and sangria!

And as an old secret unravels, they learn that love, forgiveness and second chances are possible whatever age you are. And that laughter really is the best medicine…

I definitely enjoyed reading The Sunshine Club. The blurb was what attracted me to the book at first. I do love reading about glamorous grannies, although I must say most of the book is about the lives they led when they were younger. Those lives were of course what led to the present moment, where one of the adorable ladies has passed away.

So what kind of lives did they lead? The three girls meet when they apply for a job as air hostess with Skyline in 1964. They all make it to the team and begin their training together. Not only do they train together, they also decide to rent a house together. They become the best of friends in no time at all.

The novel gives a nice insight in the lives of flight crew in the sixties up to the eighties. Working long hours, battling jet lag, but also visiting wonderful places and having parties non stop. It must have been quite an exciting, though draining life. Of course on top of that, every girl is trying to find love, a happy life really. But that is not as easy as it seems. Luckily, they have each other from the beginning right until the end.

The Sunshine Club is a lovely story that is easy to read. It is from time to time cosy and warm, but also downright sad in some parts. It is about life, nothing is all good or all bad. Life is a mixture of good and bad and the only way to get through it is together with your best friends!

I liked the blurb and the cover for this; I do like women's fiction and I haven't read much about planes and flying. And that cover, so cheery and reminiscent of summertime. :)

Vanessa, Eve, and Molly when they apply to be flight stewardesses in England in the early 60s. Boy, has flying on planes and the services changed over the years! I wish I had been around to enjoy it. Anyway, Vanessa, Molly and Eve get hired, rent an apartment together and become friends. We see glimpses of their lives over the years, with the ups and down of their friendship and their romantic lives. MacDonald shares not only the joys of flight but the long hours, crazy schedule and challenges of the job.It had its glamorous moments but also had drudgery.

As Vanessa, Molly and Eve juggle their work, they also juggle their dreams, their love lives and mistakes and regrets. Their lives diverged greatly over the years and they fought at times but always came back together. Seeing their friendship and the care they gave was wonderful. Even when I wanted to slap one or more of them, I always cheered them on and hoped they would find or make some happiness.

Minor spoiler:

One character ends up dealing with cancer. I wish I'd known beforehand as I try to avoid fiction books with cancer. I've dealt with it in my real life; I don't need it in my fiction. It's not a huge part of the story but it does lead to a major development for that character.

End spoiler.

While "The Sunshine Club" was not laugh-out-loud funny as the blurb says, it was an enjoyable, emotional, sometimes humorous read. It was slow to draw me in, I put it down a few times, but I was gradually sucked in and ended up sitting for several hours and finishing it. I loved the decades-long friendship, the flying details, the descriptions of locales and people, and the emotional journeys of the main characters and some of the side characters.

I enjoyed this group of women and the reminiscing of their friendship that spans decades. I rarely see my name anywhere, so to see it as a secondary character gave it an automatic star!

The three main characters, Vanessa, Eve, and Molly, come from different backgrounds with a need to start their lives on their own. All three are chosen to become the newest batch of airline stewardesses and their bond grows as they decide to be flatmates. As life brings twists, turns, romance, loss, and everything else, they turn to each other for support. Sometimes lifelong friends keep secrets from each other so we get a glimpse of that as well.
Loved getting the behind the scenes of the travel industry in the 60's. The process of choosing and training airline staff is wild and it's crazy to see how much has changed on plane rides. These passengers are for sure not wearing leggings with slippers and a fanny pack. 😂

Grab this book for a quick and cute read!

Vanessa, Eve and Molly are in their seventies and were reunited. They then go down the memory lane when the trio met each in the 1960s when they joined the airlines together. What follows is the story of their friendship that lasts life time, heartbreaks, family drama and more.

I actually enjoyed reading this book and didn’t expect the book to be really good. The three friends traveling around the world, the different men they meet in their life time and the bit of family drama were all realistic and intriguing to read. Many of the characters are favorable and I like how these women kept their friendship for all those years. There were funny parts in the book that will make you laugh as well.

Overall this is an enjoyable novel and worth five stars.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

The Sunshine Club by Dee MacDonald, is an enjoyable account of the lives of three women who first met in 1964 when they were accepted as trainees for stewardesses for Skyline Airlines. Molly, from Scotland, and Eve and Vanessa, from England, became fast friends despite their different backgrounds. They initially secured a flat together near Heathrow Airport as their homebase. The book covered their lives from 1964 to 2015. Early in their careers they had named themselves "The Sunshine Club," because no matter how bad the flying weather was, once the aircraft ascended above the clouds, the sun was always shining. Overall an enjoyable book that I would recommend. Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

(This review is based on an uncorrected e-galley of this novel)

All of the reviews of The Sunshine Club so far are incredibly positive, so I hate to be the one to ruin it, but this novel just wasn't for me. I think it's well written and has a lot of good qualities, but I just struggled to get into it. Maybe it's the genre, or maybe it's just because I didn't relate to the characters. Either way, if you enjoy other novels by this author or other authors such as Danielle Steel, I think you'll really enjoy this novel.

Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and author for an e-ARC of this novel.

I love a good book about friendship and focuses on older ladies and their life stories — I was drawn in easily to the three friends lives as airline flight attendants— their history , their outcome, together and as individuals . Vanessa, Eve and Molly have been friends since the 60`s and we follow their life adventures after they met each other when they became flight attendants . This is a great story of a long lasting female friendship - I felt connected to the characters and found them relatable for different reasons. It was an enjoyable , heartwarming life journey of friendship. Highly recommended !

Thank-you to Netgalley and Bookoture for this ARC. This is my honest review.

I did enjoy this story of three close female friends as they navigate their way through many years. Molly, Eve and Vanessa all meet when they are interviewing to be stewardesses on Skyline Airlines. Living together and sharing experiences created a bond that lasted through marriages, affairs, children, heartaches and more. I particularly enjoyed those parts relevant to the social history of the times, the place of women and expectations of what they could and couldn’t achieve. At times a bit disjointed, but all in all, a fun read. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

Lovely Read

This book brought back such fond memories of the old days of flying. My mom was a corporate accounts manager for Pan Am in the '60s and '70s (til they went bankrupt). We kids had the privilege of accompanying her to some really cool places for vacations. We wore our Sunday best, we were served on real porcelain plates, and the food was not pre-packaged. Those were the good ol' days of flying.
Ms. MacDonald was able to encompass so many of the changes in attitudes and culture over the decades as we follow the lives of three stewardesses and their friendship.

The sunshine club was such a feel good story.

The beginning does start out sad with 2 women at a funeral grieving their friend but we don’t know whose funeral they are attending. Then the story picks up and follows the 3 main characters Molly, Eve & Vanessa/Nessa. I love how the story flips thru each of the main characters POVs and you really get a good feel for all the ladies. I loved reminiscing with them as they shared all their memories and life stories. This was well written by MacDonald and I can’t wait to read more from her.

Thank you Net Galley for this ARC.

This is the story of three friends who first meet at an interview for ‘air hostesses’, and it follows them along until they are in their 70’s. Life is not always kind to them, but the ups and downs show us how the friendship continues. Each of the characters point of view is given so we have the backstory of each woman, and how this impacts their lives. Plenty of laughs and some sadness. A good read.
