Jennis Slaughter (1958-still kicking) was born in Leesburg, Florida and had a fairly uneventful childhood. Could be found sitting up in a Magnolia tree reading or tramping through the woods. Had (and still has) an overactive imagination so writing seemed to be the perfect outlet (since Hollywood didn't call). She prefers writing mysteries and drama and has been called 'The Angst Queen' more than once. She is a firm believer in happy endings and true love.

Good suspense

This was a good mix suspense, intrigue and of course romance. The characters of Rae and Del are intense, lovable and have a great sense of humor. Together these women from an unbreakable bond that gets tested and endures. The story of the town and the events that take place there was well written and kept me glued to the story waiting on the next incident to befall the characters. I'm on to the next installment to catch up with Del and Rae and friends.

3.5 heart review by Roberta

Wow, so I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE a really good long book!! Let’s preface this review by saying that. So, you can imagine my happiness when I saw this long book for review….OH MY LANTA!!! I couldn’t wait to get my hands into this story and I’m pretty glad that I did.

Delaney Delacroix, I really do love these southern names, by the way…anywhoo…so Delaney is a private Investigator called in to find this missing young woman who is the granddaughter of the woman who hired her. Delaney is a smartly dressed, very intelligent woman who is so very focused on doing the job to the best of her ability. Delaney was pretty much raised by her grandmother after her mother passed away while giving birth to her. Del is so great at her job, she’s been at it for awhile and she’s so damn smart. I liked that Del really took the time to do her job and figure out what the hell was going on.

Raelin Montrose is this woman who lives in this small town of Leroy, LA. Her entire life has been really just her and her mother. Rae never knew who her father was and for that, she was teased and made to be an outcast. Rae is a practicing Wiccan and it has always flowed in her veins. She does readings for others to pay her way and she’s always done what was best not only for herself, but others as well. Rae is a great character who is so selfless and yet she’s so loving and FIERCE when it comes to those she loves.

Now, let’s get to the secondary characters…Jenny, Kasey…these two young women were so sweet and loving. They are also protective of each other and Del and Rae. They are a sweet, young couple who are starting their lives together. I would like to see more of them. Rori…now that is a HELL OF A CAT!!! I really liked Rae’s familiar. He’s a great balance to Rae and it was a pleasure to see him learn to like and respect his second human. Jasper…now, I liked him, yet he always felt a bit off to me. I’m glad my gut was right about him.

Now, for the mystery portion of this story…you knew who most of the people were that were bad. You get a surprise in there and that was a blow…however, it was nice to see how it wrapped up. I really have to say that the bad guys were truly bad. They didn’t have any remorse or guilt and they were quite frankly mean and so very hateful. I will say that for me, there wasn’t enough of the case in the books. When the book centered on the case I was really focused and couldn’t tear myself away.

This is foremost a romance story. I figured that out as most of the story was focused on the growing relationship of Del and Rae. That’s not a problem…it’s just the blurb had me thinking that the romance wouldn’t take up like 95% of this book, and that created a bit of an issue in what I thought I was getting and what I got. I’m ok with it, but I wanted more of the solving of the crime and all the messiness that goes along with it.

I liked that the author really added in the fun and mystical part. It was nice to see that the way the author wrote about Rae’s abilities and the things that happens…it was thrilling and very interesting. I was very much spellbound during those parts.

There is a fair bit of sexy times in this book, you should know that going in. I was really happy that the author showed the love and affection between the characters during their intimate scenes. They were frequent and they lasted a bit…hot and sexy times abound!!!

I really enjoyed the story. The writing was really nice and flowed smoothly. I will say that it was a bit too long and I never say those words. I get that the author wanted to give us more time with the characters, but I felt that a couple of hundred pages could have been removed and the book would have still been pretty good.

This book was way too long; the story was all over the place. The main mystery, the human trafficking, seemed to take such a back seat it's like the author forgot what the story was supposed to be. It was 100 pages of Rae and Del (or Jenny and Kasey) declaring how much they love each other every 5 seconds, and then oh yeah - that trafficking thing, let's just add a page or two about that. Like I said, all over the place.

In addition, the grammar and spelling were horrible. Lots of run on and fragmented sentences, tense changes in the middle of a sentence, sentences that made no sense, extra words, etc. I can overlook some grammar and spelling mistakes if the story is good, but that wasn't the case here.

Enjoyed the book. It could have ended 250 pages in but it was still a good read. And although, you pretty much know who is in on the trafficking... it still keeps you thoroughly intrigued and involved and i was unable to put it down, because of the great writing. I loved the characters and the development and just when you think you know everything there is to know, there is still a small shocker at the end.

Loved this book and will be reading more Jennis Slaughter books!! The Wiccan side of the book was well researched and rang true on so many levels for me as a practicing witch myself. Loved the depth of the characters and the twists in storyline and the who did it aspect.

Great.

I really enjoyed Insight. I don’t usually read books with a para normal bend. But I really enjoyed this one. Lots of action and plot twists to hold your interest.
