Lies That Bind by CJ Stone
Narrated by Gail Shalan; Chris Devon

Not long after twenty year old Jess had been home from university for her father's birthday celebration disaster strikes. Her seventeen year old brother Frankie calls her that he's just found their father hanging from a rafter. Then there is a car wreck that kills Jess's mother and five year old sister. Her nine year old brother, Tom, lives but is injured physically and emotionally. Getting to listen to this story was the way to go for me. Both narrators did such a stellar job, with Shalan narrating most of the story as twenty year old Jess and Devon narrating as her seventeen year old brother, Frankie. Even though this story takes place in present day and the family lives in a typical upper middle class house, there is a gothic feel to the story, with a death in the garage, creaking floors and stairs, dark corners, strange sounds, the visions that both Jess and Tom seem to be having, and the sense of being watched. Tom is not going to be convinced that what he is seeing is not real and Frankie is blaming Jess for some of what is happening.

Jess is determined to keep the house and Frankie and Tom out of care but it's an uphill battle. Frankie wants to know why their father would kill himself as does Jess. The grief of the siblings overwhelms everything and Jess fears for their future. Frankie thinks that Jess knows more than she is telling and they both realize that their parents must have had secrets, had been hiding things from everyone. There is also the sense of something in Jess's past, which might be mixed up with her avoidance of alcohol.

This was a stressful story for me even though I did enjoy it and wanted to know what was going on. There is very serious and dangerous bullying, the sibling fights hurt when this is a time that the three should be pulling together with so much trying to pull them apart, and there is a sense of dread and fear, not only in the house but outside of the house and in Jess and Frankie's interactions with others. Jess might have her own lies and Frankie seems ready to go down some dark paths, if he hasn't already done so. Tom is hurting in more ways than one and he's defensive when the others don't believe the things he's seen.

I do wish we had a lot more answers by the end. There is so much that I am left wanting to know. But I was certainly entertained by this story and I cared that the siblings would make it out of this trauma together. It was hard hearing Jess and Frankie at such odds when everything else was going so badly for them. The narration added that much more angst to the pile with the great job that Shalan and Devon did.

Book Information

Lies That Bind was written by Cj Stone. The audiobook was published on January 10, 2023 and is 9 hours and 31 minutes. It is narrated by Gail Shalan & Chris Devon. CJ Stone is an avid thriller reader turned writer. Lies that Bind is Stone’s debut novel. Thanks to Dreamscape Media for providing me with an advance reader copy for review.

Summary

Jess is having a very bad day. Her brother Frankie called her at university in a panic having just found her father hanging in their garage. When she arrived at the hospital, she learns that her mother and sister died in a car crash as they rushed to the hospital. Her whole world has been devastated and she finds herself now trying to figure out how to take care of Frankie and her younger brother, Tom.

As they all struggle….questions linger: Why would their dad kill himself? What was going on at home? Where was her mom when it happened? And, while they all grasp at straws trying to answer these questions, strange things begin to happen---shadows, sounds, visions. What’s really going on?

My Thoughts

Lies That Bind will keep you guessing. It will make you wonder. You will want to know what’s really going on. You will guess….and be wrong. It’s gripping, engaging, layered, and most of all—a good read.

The story is told from the perspective of two characters: Jess and Frankie. I listened to the audiobook and they each had their own narrator, which I thought worked very well. Not only did it help in keeping the story straight, but also allowed for unique personalities for each of them.

The book is heavy on suspense, mystery, and most importantly heart. Essentially, 3 kids are trying to make sense of the worst moment of their lives while swirling in ever-expanding mysterious events. They are struggling with their own emotions, thoughts, doubts, fears, and uncertainty with very little firm ground to stand on. Who is lying? What is truth? Who can they trust? Can they survive on their own? Is that the best path forward? Are they ever safe?

Gail Shalan & Chris Devon did a great job with the narration. I haven’t listened to many books that had more than one narrator—and again, it worked very well.

Recommendation

Suspense, check. Mystery, check. Engaging, check. Heart, check. If you like any of these things….you will enjoy Lies That Bind. Recommended.

I devoured this novel within a day. The story was suspenseful and eerie. It had me grasping for answers. I only wish the author didn't rush through the ending. Everything wrapped up extremely fast. Too fast for my liking. Other than that, it was a well-written novel that fans of mystery and thrillers will enjoy.

"The Lies That Bind" began with a bang.

The main protagonist's father commits suicide.

A few hours later, the protagonist's mother and two of her siblings are killed in a car crash.

(Yikes!)

After this quick influx of action, the book's "thrills" and action suddenly STOP.

Although the book's "Why did my father commit suicide?" premise was compelling, the book suffered from very, very slow-paced melodrama and too many plot holes.

I listened to the audiobook read by Gail Shalan and Chris Devon.

Neither narrator had the "narrator charisma" that this book required and sorely needed.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A very fast paced and suspenseful debut thriller. How many secrets and lies can one family keep?Jessica was living the college life, but it all changed the day her parents & young sister die. She’s left to pick up the pieces and try to care for her brothers but strange things keep happening and lies keep unraveling. It was a bit predictable, but I still enjoyed the writing style so much. I wanted a bit more character development on the parents but got some close to the end. There were two twists and one really had me thrown off and kept me compelled to finish the book. I wish the best of luck to the author on her debut day which is right around the corner (01/26/2023).

3.5 ⭐Thank you, Netgalley and Dreamscape Media, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Gail Shalan & Chris Devon.

I enjoyed books with multiple narrations. Gail Shalan was terrific. This story has a good amount of eerie and some suspense. Not scary. The pilot is good. Some predictability at the story's beginning, but the last few chapters were a surprise. It's not needed, but I wish there were an epilogue five years out to show how Frankie emotionally survived. Either way, there seems to be something slightly missing at the end.

After the tragic death of her parents and younger sister, Jess leaves university to take care of her brothers, Frankie and Tom. Secrets and fear keep Frankie and Jess at odds.

Jess and Frankie struggle with the unanswered questions about why their father took his own life. Grief-stricken Jess doesn't know if she is dreaming or seeing things.

"Simmering menace and long-buried family secrets are at the heart of this gripping psychological family drama mystery—Just how far will they go to protect those they love?"

LIES THAT BIND by CJ Stone is a complex multi-layered thriller told from the POV of Jess Evans and her younger brother, Frankie.

Jess is twenty years old and the first in the family to attend university. Her life is uprooted when she receives a call from her seventeen-year-old brother, Frankie, that he has found their dad hanging from the rafter in the garage with an electrical cord.

They are devastated and have no clue their dad was suicidal. Was it murder?

She rushes home and also receives the horrific news their mom and younger sister, Lily (five years old)—were also killed in a car accident. Tom, their nine-year-old younger brother, was injured but alive. Where was their mom going, and what was she running away from?

There is an investigation but they do not pinpoint any foul play. But Jess insists something is not right. She now must take care of her orphan brothers and leave university, but how will she support them? Your heart goes out to her. She is overwhelmed. Their family has been torn apart.

Then the boys start seeing ghosts in the house, Frankie is acting out and getting into trouble, and Tom is having nightmares. Jess thinks someone is following her.

Soon she realizes something more sinister is going on. Her past secrets will surface when her parents' long-buried secrets are unraveled. When someone from her mom and dad's past surfaces that is out of prison, they all are in danger.

A heartbreaking portrait of a family coping with grief. The kids had no idea about the secrets their parents were keeping and how far they went to protect their family.

Centered around a family that has endured unspeakable tragedy, the story explores the strength of familial bonds. THE LIES THAT BIND keeps readers on the edge until the final twist unmasks secrets of the past.

The author delivers suspense, creepy and atmospheric vivid settings, and plot twists.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Gail Shalan and Chris Devon, with an engaging performance. I preferred Gail (Jess) over Chris (Frankie), primarily due to the character. If you like hidden family secrets, this one is for you.

Solid four stars from me. I was hooked from the beginning. I was satisfied with the ending.

I had the audiobook. The female narrator was spot on. She took the book to the next level. I wasn't a fan of the male narrator.

I love a story told well, and this worked for me. I liked how smoothly the timeline flowed. I had my usual angst midway, three-quarters of the way, and at 86%; hats off to CJ Stone for writing a good ending. I was surprised at myself. I didn't have a list of this or that, and when the reveal happened I literally shook my head. I didn't see it coming. The writing kept me from wandering ahead. I stayed in the moment. All the loose ends were tied up nicely.

Stone also made me happy by ending the book soon after the reveal. I'm ready for the next book before The End is on the page. Stone tidied up, and I was done. Yay. In my opinion it is the sign of clever and smart writing.

As for swearing/profanity: I don't remember.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the dual narration of this book! It was nice to get both male and female voices for the two main characters and really helped bring the story to life for me. I really liked the plot of Jess having to leave college and coming home to take care of her younger brothers Frankie and Tom when their parent die tragically. Then she tries to figure out the mysteries surrounding their deaths and how to cope with having to put her life on hold to raise her siblings. It was very intriguing with lots of twists that I didn’t see coming! I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes psychological thrillers about families and their secrets.

Lies That Bind
By: CJ Stone
Narrated by: Gail Shalan, Chris Devon
Length: 9 hrs and 30 mins

Thanks to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and the author CJ Stone for the Audio Arc. I loved this novel and couldn't stop listening to it. Jess, a college student, is the lead protagonist and is called home by her 17 year old brother who has found their father dead, in the garage. They also have a younger brother Thomas "Tomo" who is a sweetheart at 10 years old. Then there's another huge tragedy, which I won't disclose, but go with your suspension of disbelief so you can get into this well done thriller.

The rest of the book keeps you guessing at what will happen to this group of 3 siblings. There is an aunt and her husband but they live far away and don't have children of their own, and the kids hardly know them. They're alone in their family home trying to figure out why there are strange noises, what was the reason behind their father's death, and questions about their mom and other young sibling. You can read the publisher's blurb to get a clearer picture of course. It's a character driven thriller and we get to know some of the elder siblings secrets along the way. This audio features a female and male narrator who both do a terrific job.

Some 4 star reviews are barely 4 stars - but not this one. It is a strong 4 to 4-1/2 stars. It would've been a 5* with the exception of a small part of the book at the "beginning of the ending" that I disliked. I let it go and enjoyed the rest of the conclusion.

A unique storyline.

Jessica (Jess) Evans receives a phone call from her brother, Frankie that will change the course of her life. Frankie had returned from school to find his father hanging in the garage. To add to their devastation, their mother and young sister are killed in a motor accident. She was rushing home after hearing the news of her husband’s suicide when she had an accident. She and her young daughter died at the scene, but Tom aged nine survived the accident.

We (the readers) are left to follow the journey as Jess, Frankie and Tom try to make sense of coming to terms with their new shattered lives.

Normally, when I reached the end of a novel, I’m fairly confident that I can write a reasonable review. I found that I couldn’t simply sit down and “write a review.” I had to go away and analyse my reaction to the storyline. How would a tragedy, with some terrible lies uncovered, affect me? Would I be able to cope in a comparable situation? One of my dilemmas was that I didn’t particularly warm to any of the characters. Again, this made me analyse my feelings. What made me react to the characters in this way? Why did I find their anger and aggression and lies so irritating? It took me a good week to sit and ponder and realise that I’d been deeply affected by the storyline, and I could finally see the characters and their loss with compassion and understanding.

This might be CJ Stone’s debut novel and all I can do is hope that they dare to author their next novel, which will hopefully, once again, mean that I would be bound to look deeper within myself at my reaction to devastating events.

In my opinion, this book started out stronger than it ended. I enjoyed much of the first half, including the tension, angst, mystery, and creepy, supernatural vibes. I didn’t love the conclusion the same way, though. It was fine, but my attention wandered, and I’m pretty confident I didn’t retain all of the details. Overall, I liked but didn’t love the book, and the ending just wasn’t quite to my taste, I guess.

***I received this ARC audiobook free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

In The Lies That Bind a tragedy has taken both parents. The remaining children are trying to figure things out and make life work. Along the way they stumble across many life altering lies! Some of these lies could take down the rest of the family.

This book is well written. The characters are relatable and easy to like. Their story is tragic and frightening. What would you do in their shoes?

As far as the audiobook, it was very easy to listen to. I highly recommend you read this book!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media the e-audio book in exchange for an honest review.

Audiobook narrated by Gail Shalan; Chris Devon

I thought the voicing of the audio book was great and matched the characters. I do recommend the audio book if that is your choice of book.

On a horrible day, Jess, a university student, gets a phone call from her brother. Their dad has been found by her brother hanging in the garage. On their way to the hospital, Jess and her brother find out that her mom and sister were killed in a car wreck but that her younger bother survived.

Why did their father hang himself? Where was her mother driving to so fast?

The siblings are trying to get past their grief, Jess taking care of them. But soon strange things are happening like noises, items going missing and a sort of dark presence looming. What really happened? Are the siblings safe?

The storyline was ok. I found it a bit slow as it dragged in the beginning and there really was not much character development. The pacing was too slow as well. Aside from typical arguing, we know nothing about the parents or why their deaths happened. Frankie is not relatable and despite family offering help, Jess is on her own. I expected all of the characters, especially the younger brother who survived the crash, to be more traumatised but they just slogged through it.

I didn’t find the big twist in the end that revealing or unexpected. Just an OK read.

Lies That Bind by CJ Stone is a creepy and entertaining read. I stayed intrigued throughout, never really sure what the outcome would be. However, a big secret is revealed about 80% through the book and, even though it made no logical sense, it was also somewhat predictable. I'm just confused on how the character(s) acted given this information. Also, there's too many unanswered questions/loose ends. Overall, I give this story 3 stars.

Gail Shalan and Chris Devon were okay narrators. I didn't really like how Gail speaking as Jess whispered; I found myself occasionally zoning out.

I was sent this audiobook from the Netgalley. My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

This was my first book from CJ Stone. Triggers for death, suicide, bullying,

This is not going to be for everyone and I do recommend checking triggers before jumping in. I eally had no clue what was going to happen and I was shocked how much happened so fast. The beginning was so good. However; the rest of the story is the children trying to figure out what happened to their parents. It was very slow moving after the initial blows in the story.

There was a twist that I did not see coming. It was a good twist, but it all is thrown in so fast with the ending. Much more unfolds but really did not answer so many of my questions I still had. I wanted more of a conclusion on this one.

Overall, this was a decent listen though but just did not blow me away. The narration is also great as you have dual narrators for Frankie and Jess.

Thank you to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media and CJ Stone for providing me an advance copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

The story takes on 2 POVs, that of Jess and her brother Frankie. The female narrator was great, I had no issues. The male narrator however I found very monotone and not properly conveying emotion in the story.

Jess gets a call from her younger brother Frankie, who found their dad in the garage having committed suicide. At the hospital, Hess learns her mother and younger sister, Lily, died in a car accident, her other younger brother, Tom, survived.

The story follows the aftermath of the tragedies, as strange things happen around the house and secrets are discovered by Jess and Frankie.

The story was quite creepy - do we believe in ghosts, or something even more sinister going on?

I think the ending was quite rushed, so much of the story was built up being really creepy with Tom seeing people in his bedrooms, things moving around, Jess’ scary dreams. The ending was really fast and barely dusted over a lot of these facts.

I went through thinking this would be an almost solid 4 star book but the ending was just really unsatisfying so I’d say this is closer to a 3-3.5 star read.

3⭐️

Jess’ family is torn apart and her life is changed forever in a single night. Her father dies, and soon after her mother and 5 year old sister die in a car crash. Jess is left to take care of her brothers Frankie and Tom. But Jess has a secret. And Frankie feels she’s hiding something. Switching back and forth between Jess and Frankie’s POV, you get different perspectives of the truth.

This book was SO slow for me, it didn’t seem to get interesting until about 80% through. Also, the dialogue was so cheesy it almost made me chuckle. However, the twist was good but could be predictable for those who read a lot. I personally loved the ending which is why I gave it as many stars as I did.

Overall, I liked it but it was not my favorite.

Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC.

Eerie and tense, Lies That Bind follows three siblings after the death of both parents as well as their 5-year-old sister. Jess leaves university, determined to take care of her younger brothers, but they soon find a disturbing presence in their home. Unsure whether it's the ghosts of their parents or something more sinister, Jess and her teenage brother Frankie are both determined to find answers, though they have secrets of their own.

I found this story to be intriguing and the suspense was written well, but the wrap-up seemed too quick for my liking.

Jess has had a relatively standard time at university, but one night her life changes in an instant. Her father commits suicide and her mother and younger sister die in a car crash, leaving Jess as the caretaker of her younger brothers. As they try to navigate their grief and changed circumstances, Jess feels that there are too many unanswered questions. And then strange noises and moving shadows begin to occur in the house, causing Jess to frantically try to uncover the truth before it’s too late.

This work is classified as a “mystery and thriller” – I agree with the mystery, but it didn’t become a thriller until maybe the last two chapters. The suspenseful aspect started off relatively strong, but that part of the story was lost for the most part by the middle of the work. The pacing of the work was not consistent – the first 80% was a slog to get through, then things slowly began to build, then the last 2% is when everything happened. The twist at the end was a little absurd and predictable, and there were a couple of plot holes related to it that made the reveal unsatisfying and the ending frustrating. Jess had her own secret that wasn’t revealed until near the end of the work, but it was so heavily hinted at throughout that it hadn’t been a “secret” since about halfway through the work.

The characters were okay. They were written well enough to be tolerable, but aside from Jess, it was difficult to connect with them. Their development was a little lacking overall. I felt that the author completely missed an opportunity to study how trauma is manifested in different people of different ages; for the most part, the siblings just kind of muddle through without many realistic responses or discussions relating to the loss of three of their family members.

I found this read to be boring overall – I think it would have been more interesting if the author had chosen to make it a study of grief and trauma rather than a “thriller.” But I know several folks who enjoyed this one, so you might too. My thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to read this work. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I love that I've found time to read another of Rob's books and am certain that I'll continue to be working my way through the others he's written as I loved Obsession and this one I think I enjoyed even more.

My only complaint with this book wa sthat I literally got nothing else done for a couple of days as I just couldn't put it down - except to go to bed - I often would have read late into the night to finish it .... But I was honestly so creeped out in the dark on my own downstairs that I had to stop and race up to bed! 🫣🤣

So, whilst at uni, Jess hears that her father has commited suicide and she rushes home to be with the rest of the family. When she arrives, she hears that her mother and younger sister died in a car accident on the way home.
As her life falls apart, she know sthta she must stay strong and take care of her two younger brothers as the grief has hit them all hard.
When Tom says he's seen a ghost and other strange things start happening at home, Jess wonders how to keep it together whilst keeping everyone safe and working out what on earth is going on.

Oh, I felt so emotional for those kids losing both parents in one go and then among the grieving, all this strange and spooky stuff starts happening. I mean noises in the house and things moving around is enough to creep anyone out, let alone when your emotions are already all over the place!

I loved how determined Jess was to protect her brothers. Obviously life was changing in so many ways, but in others, the lives around them carried on and it was the depiction of that that hits you when reading knowing that life for teenagers is hard enough. I think that this added a real relatability to the characters as a whole.

I really enjoy books written in multi-povs, as here we see both Jess and Frankie's pov throughout and this works brilliantly to reveal different parts of the story and perspectives to us.

The writing style once again totally gripped me from the start and as I said, I struggled to find a good place to stop. It was exciting and creepy and had me on the edge on my seat throughout, I was just waiting for the next twist and the next shock moment, even though I had no clue what to expect, I could sense that there were more to come!

Another great read and I will be hunting out some more reads by Rob soon.

REVIEW

‘A blistering debut’ 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

A gripping tale of secrets and lies. It starts slowly, drawing you in, enfolding you into the mystery. And once you are hooked, the pace picks up and you cannot stop reading until all is revealed! The characters are beautifully crafted, my heart went out to the siblings left, after the death of their parents and their younger sister, grappling with terrible grief. Jess is such a strong woman and I was desperate for things to work out for them, to uncover the secrets they discover in their parent’s lives. Can’t wait to read more by this author!

Lies That Bind tells the story of a young women who loses both her parents and sister in a profoundly distressing way. Jess is in her final year at university but has to hurry home to pick up the pieces and support her two brothers, Frankie 17 and Tom 19. Jess soon begins to realise that all is not as it seems and as she delves further into her parents’ lives there are many secrets to uncover, not least of all her own. As the family begin to feel another presence in the house there is an added twist to the story. This is a story of Jess and her brothers’ journey to make sense of all that has happened. It is well told and at times intense as it describes the feelings of the characters so well. All the characters are so well portrayed and their sense of grief and despair is palpable. Jess is such a strong character who, as a reader, you wanted to cheer on to succeed in her role as carer for her brothers.

CJ Stone is a pseudonym for a new wave of psychological thrillers by Rob Sinclair who is a well known author of action/espionage thrillers. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed his earlier works but this is the first I have read under his pseudonym.

Lies That Bind is quite a departure from his earlier novels. After the tragic death of her father and the ensuing deaths of her mother and young sister in a car crash, Jess is left to care for her teenage brother Frankie and younger brother. She is left with a lot of unanswered questions. Did their father really take his own life? Where was their mother going when the crash occurred?

She has to quit university and find a job to support her siblings. She manages to hang onto their house with help from her aunt. But the house they are living in seems haunted as they hear sinister sounds. But stay tuned-all will be revealed in due course.

Rob Sinclair has a promising second career as a writer of psychological thrillers.

Thanks to Bloodhound Books for providing me with an Advance Review Copy of this novel.

This was a domestic thriller that had action early and kept me interested the whole time. I never completely guessed what was happening, although the first death was fairly obvious that everything wasn’t what it seemed. This tactic was nice, because it kind of made me more invested in the book to make sure that the truth was discovered. And what truths were discovered, I was not ready. Overall a good read.

One Sunday night turned Jess’s life upside down. She was away at university when her brother Frankie called, he had found their dad, possibly dead, in the garage. As Jess rushed home, her mom called her saying she was racing to the hospital, but the phone was cutting out, and Jess’s phone died. She gets to the hospital to find Frankie by himself. Her mom never made it to the hospital, she crashed with her two youngest children in the car. Now Jess had to try and take over the household, keep everyone together, all while that nagging feeling that things aren’t how they appear to be.
