Are you a Snail? If you are, your life began in an egg like one of these. When you hatch, you look like this. This is your mother. You are much smaller than your mother. You are very, very small, but you will grow. You have two horns and two eyes on stalks. You can pull your eyes right down inside the stalks and into your head if you need to. You are slimy. You are VERY slimy. This book is a perfect introduction to the world of the Snail. An ideal book for young children I enjoyed reading all about Snails I received this book free from a neighborhood book drop.

Super-cute book about the snail and it's biology and ecology. It is an oft-overlooked animal that gets no love so it's nice to see a book about it. The book feels like it is designed to be read aloud to little ones since it is written in the 2nd person.

Introducing the marvels of...the snail! (You are probably *not* one, but it never hurts to check.) Do you have eyestalks? A shell? Only one foot and a LOT of slime?

Are you a Snail? by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries is a nonfiction book about the life cycle and living of snails. Are you a Snail? is part of a series of nonfiction Backyard Books, a few others of which would be, Are you a Bee?, Are you a Ladybug?, and Are you a Butterfly? This book explains to the reader how a snail lives, eats, and grows in a series of lively facts addressed to the reader as if the reader were a snail. The illustrations share the examples and life in the book and illustrate exactly the point the sentences on the page stress so that child listeners can follow along easily. At the end of this book, the author chooses to make a few comparisons between a human child and a growing snail. Lastly, there is a “Did you know…” page at the end for additional and interesting facts. This book certainly introduces nonfiction in a fun and relatable way that encourages the readers to compare, contrast, and explore the topic.
(Fulfills a nonfiction book requirement)

This is another fun book in the Are You a... series of books by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries. We like these books. They offer scientific information, but in a colorful and fun format. Children will like how the books speaks to them and helps to compare a human to the creature described. And the Did You Know... section in the back offers additional facts about the topic. We will certainly look for more books in this series.

Personal Reaction:
I liked this book because it contained a lot of information. The information was presented in a fun and simple way which was very easy to read.

Purpose:
I would use this book for first graders if they are doing a research project on snails. The information is presented in a simple way and the pictures support the information. The information is accurate and easy to read. Children would enjoy this book because it is interesting to read about snails which are commonly not researched.

This was featured on Between the Lions. Lots of information on snails. I really liked the way it was written, asking if you have the characteristics of a snail. The end also has a contrast to humans.
