4 stars, recommended for middle-grade students and all ages who wish for a bit more magic in their lives

“There’s no such thing as normal. Normal to one person is bonkers to another.“

Eccentricity can be magical!

Characters: 9 (out of 10)
Young Chloe and middle-aged gentlemen shop owners Ixworth and Maddox may not fit in everywhere, but their bond with one another becomes unbreakable. Chloe finds comfort and encouragement as a respite from school, quickly becoming fascinated with the peculiar but entertaining lives of the magicians. The story’s villain(s) reveal themselves in time, and secondary characters like Chloe’s parents seem believable. Unfortunately, her classmate Iris isn’t developed as a character after being introduced early in the book.

Atmosphere/Settings: 9
The curiosity shop comes to life and creates a whimsical setting, filled with imagination and mystery… fun-filled gadgets and gizmos on display. There’s a hint of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory minus the scary nature of Willy Wonka. Who wouldn’t want to visit this emporium tucked away from Oxford Street and discover a new attraction every time? The London locations of the Mayfair shop, the area streets, and Chloe’s home can be found on current London maps; such detail is always a plus in spite of a handful of typographical errors in this advance copy, possibly fixed before publication. Having spent quite a bit of time in London, I appreciated the accuracy and place names .

Writing Style: 8
Throughout most of the story, the imaginative imagery and figurative comparisons fit the characters who provide them, especially the mind of 11-year-old Chloe in this close third-person narrative. From the climax through the ending, too much explanation limits the action and decreases the hoped-for tension.

Plot: 6
Though the world building is helpful, it lasts a bit too long before the event igniting the main conflict occurs about one-third of the way into the book. Foreshadowing frequently pointed to it, and I would have preferred more of a surprise than a chapter titled “The Disappearance of Mr. Ixworth.” Events are effectively connected, but the climax through resolution creates less suspense than expected.

Intrigue: 7
Started with intrigue and remained interesting, though I can’t say the intrigue increased so that I was completely compelled to keep reading, especially in situations where Maddox conveniently had just the right magical powders/solutions.

Logic: 8
Most of the characters’ actions and the situational details seemed credible. Some motives were simplistic or unexplained regarding the world of magicians, though the ending did provide some insight. Two things: one, even with their busy and distracted lifestyles, parents would want to visit the shop at least once to ensure it’s a safe place for Chloe. Two, the brownies are only half explained, obviously loyal to Ixworth, but the plot seems to call for more in their relationship with Maddox.

Enjoyment and Meaning: 8
I hoped for an imaginative story with fun characters. This met those expectations.

Themes…

Magic may be found when and where you look for it, including inside yourself.

Respect those who respect you and learn from them regardless of age, young or old.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author/publisher for the ARC. Opinions expressed are my own.

I am mostly saying no to review copies from independently published authors these days, because of feeling overwhelmed by books and life, but I'm really glad I took a chance on this one.

Chloe is sad--her busy parents are neglecting her, and her best friend is growing up faster than she is and has started leaving her behind. Then one rainy London afternoon, walking home from school through a curious little London street, she tries to shelter in a shop doorway. The rain comes down harder, and though the shop isn't open for business yet, she tries the door in desperation, and enters "The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox."

There she finds magic, for Ixworth and Maddox aren't just ordinary sellers of curious things. They are London magicians, creating, with the help of their resident brownies, magical marvels to sell to others such as themselves...and surprisingly, they welcome Chloe; after all, the door opened for her. She finds herself spending more and more time with them, and the two kindly magicians encourage her own potential for magic.

When Ixworth disappears with no warning or reason, Chloe is determined to help Maddox find him. They set off on a journey that takes Chloe deep into magical London, where dark and ancient magic is being worked in a struggle for power. It's not just Ixworth who needs saving (if saving him is even possible).....

I very much like interesting fantasy shops, and though some readers might find the first half of the book slow, I loved being introduced gently, with lots of details, to what the shop was selling and the workings of the magical city. And then when things got going plot wise, and there was a mystery to solve and bad people and dangerous magic to foil, I enjoyed that too. Chloe has both believable agency and believable emotional reactions.

In short, it doesn't break any particularly new ground, but it is does what it sets out to do very satisfactorily. And if, like me, you like middle grade fantasy shop keeping, it's a must! I hope there is a sequel.

3.5 stars.
Chloe Ashley is lonely; her parents, though they care for her, are very busy and leave her to her own devices. Also, Chloe and her best friend have drifted apart.

One day while wandering London's streets near her home, Chloe comes across a curiosities shop she's never seen before. She meets the owners, Mr. Ixworth and Mr. Maddox. They're eccentric and friendly, and inform her she's in a real magic shop run by magicians.

Feeling welcomed, Chloe begins coming by the shop regularly, and decides one day she would like to learn real magic. Mr. Maddox begins teaching her; her training is bizarre, confusing, and Chloe realizes that it is very hard to become a real magician. After much practice, She does manage to learn one spell (reminiscent of "Lux" from the "Rivers of London" series).

Then, Mr. Ixworth disappears, and Chloe and Maddox begin searching for him, as well as they can within the constraints Maddox must operate within (there are rules and limits to magic). Chloe learns of another magician, who has long had a difficult, jealousy-ridden relationship with Ixworth, and their search begins there, and eventually takes them underground and into an ancient conspiracy entailing other magicians' quest for huge power.

The story starts slowly, letting us understand Chloe's home situation and her need for connection, as well as how magicians imbue objects with power, and the difficulty of practising magic.

The story picks up gradually, as Chloe and Maddox make multiple failed attempts to find Ixworth, and the whole story culminates in a slightly scary reveal.

I would have appreciated a tighter plot with more tension. And the conflict at the climax, while resolved, was actually less satisfying than I expected. What I did like was the conversation Chloe and Ixworth had later; we know he has work to do to rebuild trust and Chloe has much more to learn, as she's demonstrated her skill with magic and willingness for adventure.

I did enjoy the way magic was defined by the author, as it was slightly unconventional, but also reminded me of portkeys, as created by you know who.

Chloe was an interesting protagonist to follow; she finds direction and her voice over the course of her adventures, and I feel like the author was leaving the door open for more story to follow.

Thank you to Netgalley and to BooksGoSocial for this ARC in exchange for my review.

The best fantasy book of the year! I can imagine this cosy magical shop of curiosities by Ixworth and Maddox (two bestfriends who run this bussiness magic shop). I love how Chloe make friends with two magicians. Chloe supposed to be going home after school. But, she going to the bookshop and rain is coming over. She’s trying to find somewhere to hiding and discover the wondrous merchandise the magic shop has offer. In short time, Chloe becoming a magician’s apprentice. Surely, you will never regret reading this book.

The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox by J.D. Grolic is a funny adventurous read. Chloe a 11 year old girl, was feeling lonely and became friends with the owners of the Curiosity shop. And one day one of the owner were missing and she goes to find him!

This book was funny, magical, surely kids will enjoy them. But it felt extremely long because of the description. Otherwise it's a good one to pass your time.

The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox
⭐⭐⭐⭐

When Chloe a young girl stumbles across a shop in one of Londons unique alleyways run by Maddox and Ixworth with a little help from the stores Brownies she enters a truly magical realm of wonderful magical objects and happenings.

Maddox and Ixworth have a friendship that spans the years.. both are Magicians and are keepers of there own realms, along with many other magicians in London.

One day something happens that leads Chloe and Maddox into the underworld of Magic London, there is only so many spells that can help and time is running out for them to solve a very odd case involving Ixworth.

Will Maddox and Chloe solve the mystery and will Ixworth ever be his normal self again??

I really enjoyed reading this book, it took me on a great journey which I enjoyed.

*“So these realms, as you call them, keep you young, or do you all live forever?” — Chloe, The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox*

Thanks netgalley for giving me an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a great read for my holiday break!

The beginning is a little slow starting, but once the mystery starts to pile up, it is absolutely worth the wait. I’m typically more of a YA girlie who loves her quick, snappy paced books but I actually found this to be a delightful read.

At first, it’s a little bit slow starting but once the ensemble is put together, all three characters meeting one another—then the intrigue starts to pile on.

I thought it was quite interesting how in this magic system, everyone is capable of choosing to accept and become magical. I thought that was really quite genius, because that’ll appeal to kiddos reading this book that they, too, can be magical—all they have to do is want it.

The way it’s written and conveyed, it reminds me a little of Alice in Wonderland (a good thing) and I found myself becoming more invested in Chloe’s journey (a great thing!)

Pros:
- whimsical atmosphere
- clean, calm reading
- easily digestible magic system
- travelling by coat rack (seriously how cool!)
- A good balance between dialogue and exposition

Cons:
- slow start
- I do wish that the disappearance had happened a little bit sooner than 31%

Let me start off by admitting that it took me waaaaaay longer to finish this book than it should have. I had a plan... it was a good plan... that plan had a timeline, and Life disagreed with my plan, and sooooo here we are... waaay late in the game. Please, do not take that negatively and assume that my sluggishness was the book or author's fault... it was all me... my bad!! I only mention this because I overshot my review deadline by a mile, and for that, I am sorry.

NOW that that's settled, let's move right along...

This book is a solid Middle Grade fantasy with a magical shop stocked with mystical/magical items. It is a quaint, unassuming shop that is owned & operated by 2 eccentric Magicians and their Brownies that do all of the heavy lifting & crafting.

Anywho...

The writing in this book is atmospheric. I even enjoyed the pacing, though some might feel it's a bit sluggish in spots... that is until the mysteries start to pile up. Unfortunately, the real action doesn't start its crescendo until it is (almost tragically) (nearly criminally) (somewhat) uncomfortably too late... although strangely enough, it works here... you just need to be a bit patient.

My main gripe is not only that the sleuthing isn't kicked into high gear until much much later in the book BUT when it does get more interesting, the resulting climax is more of a whimper than a ROOOAAAAR!! The mysterious puzzles (which there are only a few) are analyzed and solved too quickly and too neatly. The ending is somewhat satisfying and even leaves room for a sequel, but I'm on the fence about whether or not I will be seeking it out.

Overall:
This book is written well. The pacing is a bit spasmodic, and the conflicts are too easily resolved, BUT I truly/madly/deeply love the Magic System and the fact that ANYONE can become a Magician... they just need some guidance from an established/knowledgeable Magician and a whole lot of time and effort to spend practicing. I love it SO much!! With every crazy/scary/dark thing that is going on around the world these days, I badly needed to get lost in this book's whimsy. I truly appreciate that aspect, and it's reflected in my rating. If we were in a less discordant time and I possessed a headspace less desperate to be soothed, I probably would have leaned towards giving a more critical review & rating. I am thankful that my anxiety riddled/chaos driven headspace was assuaged perfectly with this book's peaceful/calming aura. Was it a solid read? Yes. Was it groundbreaking? No, BUT even though it is a tame Middle Grade read, it definitely is a catalyst for my more zen like calm these days admist the fall of humanity's consciousness. I enjoyed myself, AND honestly, that's the perfect gift!!

So, if you're a lover of good, clean, wholesome fantastical tales containing relateable/attainable Magic Systems with mysteries to solve... if you're a fan of yarns that are peppered throughout with cute Onomatopoeias... then this is definitely for you! To all of the naysayers and poopers of parties, I believe you too should give this a go even if it doesn't sound like your genre of choice because we live in turbulent times... couldn't we all use a bit of Magic and whimsy in our lives??

~ Enjoy

Murder. Theft. A kidnapping. Greed. A hat rack. A river below a city. Old Magic. All this and more spring to life in this delicious and delightful page turner by J.D. Grolic.

Chloe Ashley, age eleven, is looking for shelter from a sudden downpour when she happens upon an old shop located at #17 South Molton Lane, London (Hi, Cherry Tree Lane). Ignored by her busy parents and others, Chloe befriends the two elderly gentlemen who run the shop, Mr. Ixworth and Mr. Maddox. They’re a bit … eccentric. Turns out, they’re in “the business of magic.”

But when Ixworth suddenly disappears, Chloe and Maddox are launched into a shadowy, sinister world of mystery and murder. Also potions, spells, counter-spells, and enchantment. Can they unravel what happened to Ixworth before it’s too late? And why has Maddox been “evicted” from a magical realm? How did the shop’s brownie workshop disappear overnight? Who is behind these strange happenings, and why? (“Just because something is forbidden doesn’t mean you can’t get it.”)

Meanwhile, Chloe travels by hat rack (you read that right) and lands in someone’s house. She discovers a map with pushpins and overhears voices talking about “taking precautions.” But against whom? And why? And what’s up with the creepy guy with “the long slick hair”? Is he stalking Chloe? Why?

What follows is a high-octane adventure into magical realms above and below the streets of London. There’s also an ancient secret and more plot twists than The Smiler at Alton Towers.

Masterfully written and expertly paced, Curiosities' storyline is as absorbing as a sponge. It hooks readers from chapter one and reels you in for the duration. Characters are so lively and artfully drawn, they practically stand up and walk. On their own.

If you’re looking for a quick and colorful read that’ll keep you turning pages until the very end, check out The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox. It will certainly resonate with its target audience of middle grade readers and anyone who enjoys a story brimming with wit, whimsy, and magic.

Indeed,Fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Lemony Snicket will enjoy this charming middle grade fantasy. It's an exceptional achievement, especially for a debut novel. I couldn’t’ put it down!

On one of her many days alone, Chloe wanders into a curiosities shop in London when she wasn't supposed to. She discovers that the shop's owners, Mr. Ixworth and Mr. Maddox, sell real magic. When Ixworth disappears, Chloe and Maddox get swept into a world of strange magic, kidnappings, and magic thefts to discover what happened to their friend.

This is the kind of book that I craved as a kid. Fun magical items, strange magical creatures and an almost found family aspect when discovering a magic world were all things I loved finding in books. However, as a grown-up, I couldn't stop thinking about how two middle-aged men were hanging out alone with and calling an eleven-year-old girl. Curse my adult sensibilities. Beyond that, the book was charming overall.

The characters in the book are one of the highlights. Chloe, Ixworth, and Maddox are a little different, but how they get along and understand each other is delightful. The curiosity shop is as whimsical and fun as the people who inhabit it. The descriptions make me feel like I could follow the general directions and find my way to the shop if I were visiting London.

The book lacks a little in terms of plot. There isn't a lot of tension, and there was so much foreshadowing in some parts that it felt like a drag to get to the part that was foreshadowed. The story picks up slowly. While it's fun to enjoy the whimsy of the magical situation, it was harder to get invested in the storyline. At the end, the darker elements didn't match up the rest of the book.

The book reminded me of books like Alice and Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but with toned-down whimsy and danger. The characters reminded me of books like The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Chrestomanci series, although I wouldn't say this book has the same quality as any of the books I've listed. If you're wanting something with a similar feel, however, this might be worth picking up.

Overall, I thought it was a fun book that unfortunately fell a little short of being truly great, although it's an enjoyable read nonetheless. If you're looking for a cozy, magical read with a touch of humor and an interesting mystery, this book might be a good fit for you.

I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

I just had to say YES when I got the mail from the author asking me if I would like to review their book! A magic store? A girl discovering magic? And there is mystery? YES!

In this book we have a magic store filled with the most awesome items you can think of (I need that Memory Desk), but also stuff for the common folk. Yep. The store has a way that at one point it is filled with frills and such for the people who don’t know about magic, and then boom, there are commissions and other stuff later in the day. There are brownies working in the basement. I just wanted to visit the store so badly, it sounded like a wonderful and magic place, even during the day.

Chloe was such a fun character, though I did feel for her. In regards to the friendship, I could understand that feeling wholly. I had the same happen with my friends around that age. They would be more interested in x and I was more into y. Or still into y. XD And as for her parents, I just wanted to hug her and give the parents a shake or two. You got this kid. You take care of her. Don’t just let her alone, forget about her, or just act like she is something that accidentally got into the house. She is your child. But I loved that Chloe didn’t let all of that get to her. I loved how she kept going, how she found a family with Maddox and Ixworth. Their store. Their magic. Their tales of magic and fantasy. And I loved how, despite magic being a bit complex (I mean I still don’t entirely get the instructions for the Rosebud), she kept on going. Trying it out. Keep on trying.

The mystery was a lot of fun and I loved seeing Maddox and Chloe try to figure out things. I loved that Maddox allowed Chloe to be a part of it. I have read so many books with children who want to help out with finding a friend and solving mysteries but get blocked by adults. Not in this case. These two work together. Chloe is learning magic and has the power of modern magic (aka cellphones and the likes) on her side and Maddox has knowledge, strong magic, and experience. I loved that the mystery thickened and thickened. We kept finding out new things, fun things, exciting things, and even met up with some people along the way. We learn some mysteries and dive deep in the magic of London. Did I mention evil masks and scary temples? No, well those are also there!

It was fab this one took place in London and that we got to see quite a bit of it~

But yeah, I would have liked the wizards/magicians to at least go with what is new in the world. I mean, if I was a wizard/magician in a time that so much changed? I would be very much curious about all that is coming out. I would definitely try it all out.

I am not sure how I felt about the twist at the end. It definitely made me very wary of the character. I get that he was pressured, cursed, and all sorts of other things, but still I had expected better and I am just not sure if I can truly trust him again in the next volume. I would have rather have had him be x rather than what he has become now.

All in all, this was a good book and I definitely hope that there will be more books in the future! I need to see if Chloe masters more magic, what the store will sell, and what is next for Chloe, Maddox, and Ixworth.

J.D. Grolic brings us into the fun world of magic and unexpected friendships in “The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox.”

When Chloe Ashley stumbles into an eclectic curiosity shop on a rainy afternoon, she’s in for a major shock — seeing magical brownies (creatures she didn’t think existed) working on the business.

Meeting magicians Mr. Ixworth and Mr. Maddox, she develops friendships with the two men. But shortly after, strange things begin happening. An evil looking man begins to follow her. Another not-very-nice man visits the shop looking for unique items. And worse yet, Ixworth goes missing.

As Chloe joins forces with Maddox to find their friend, Chloe must learn to dig deep into herself and find the strength, courage and even a little bit of magic that she possesses.

Grolic develops a fun story filled with mystery, funny moments and suspense, as well as great characters like the feisty Chloe and the enigmatic Maddox and Ixworth. He also fills “The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox” with some good themes, like dealing with the struggle to fit in; having unusual friendships and what we can learn from them; and don’t ever give up and always believe in yourself.

Fans of books like “The International House of Dereliction” by Jacqueline Davies and “The Sinister Secrets of Singe” by Sean Ferrell will love this story.

Five stars out of five.

Chloe Ashley is lonely. Her parents are busy, her best friend is distant after changing in an inexplicable fashion, and she is not happy at school. So when she accidentally comes across the curious emporium run by Messrs Ixworth and Maddox, she is happy to be absorbed into their world.

And what a world it is! This is entertaining and creative story telling at its best. I was completely transported by the description of a magical world where really anyone can learn magic, the city of London is divided into magical realms awarded to various magicians on the basis of certain criteria, and a busyness of brownies are hard at work to produce the beautiful magical items designed by Ixworth and his friend Maddox.

When one of her new friends goes missing, Chloe is able to put her nascent magical skills to use, to assist the other one in searching for his business partner and old friend, encountering the nasty Mr Thirsk, dark magic, and a very frightening mask along the way.

This is a fantastic story, and very original in terms of its concept as well. Would unhesitatingly pick up another book by this writer. Highly recommended.

[BookSirens free copy in return for an honest review]

Chloe - an eleven-year-old who is neglected by her parents - stumbles into a shop when she's trying to hide from the rain.
A very curious shop, full of interesting oddities. She also sees something she wasn't supposed to see: magic. Not the wizard-with-a-wand kind, the kind that can be taught and studied. She befriends the two gentlemen who own the shop and starts learning some magic -- which is as difficult as Mr. Maddox warned her it was.
When Mr. Ixworth suddenly vanishes they of course have to find him, but also get sidetracked by other magical mysteries along the way.

It's a fun, somewhat slow-paced book (but intentionally so, not boring!)

As an adult I want to spend a few hours in that store. As a kid I would have loved to cuddle up with this on rainy days disappear into a small part of London filled with realms, spells, potions, and curses stored in vials. With a little dark and dangerous magic lurking in the shadows.

There were a few times where there was a bit too much of an overlap with Harry Potter, but it was a unique enough world that for most of the book this was not an issue.

This was a whimsical story about a young girl named Chloe who, feeling dejected and alone, wanders into a curiosity shop where she meets Ixworth and Maddox. She befriends the magicians and begins learning a bit of magic herself. When Ixworth mysteriously disappears, she joins forces with Maddox to find him. You will be sucked into Chloe's search and her brushes with magic, and the villain will surprise you. I enjoyed the magic in this book; it is not so easy as just saying words or motioning with the hands. There are complex potions, hours of practice to perform precise movements, and it really seemed something to be gained through effort, though you had to have the spark. The main story definitely centers on Chloe, Ixworth, and Maddox, but Chloe's family and former friend don't really add much to the story as characters. This doesn't take away from the story, but it does feel like they could be more developed. Overall, I breezed through the story quickly and enjoyed it very much. The curiosity shop in this story had the delicious feel of the magic of London in the Harry Potter series. The odd yet lovable magicians Ixworth and Maddox created wildly imaginative spells that were a constant source of delight. And young Chloe was like Harry Potter and Lyra of The Golden Compass, lonely but brave young people who accomplish things through pluck and a strong sense of right and wrong.

All these ingredients create a recipe for an exciting clash between good and evil seasoned with lots of mystery and magic. I see further adventures for this crew.

I hope in the next episode, however, that the story unwinds with enough clarity that the last few chapters don’t have to be spent with one character explaining the plot and solution to the others. Show, don’t tell, makes a much stronger story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I look forward to the further adventures of Chloe and her magician friends. This is a good choice for Middle Schoolers or anyone wishing they could solve their problems with a little magic.

I was provided with an advanced reader copy of this book in ebook format in hopes that i would provide an honest review.

I was drawn in by the blurb and stayed for a wonderful adventure. Chloe is feeling left behind by her friend as she has made new ones and Chloe doesnt quiet fit with this new group. Her parents are often busy and dont seem to have much in the way of time for their daughter .

So when she finds herself in a curiosity shop run by magicians and in becoming friends with them she learns magic is real and that she can do magic too !
Then when one of the magicians goes missing she and her friend must set about solving the mystery surrounding his disappearance.

Its a sweet adventure, the magic system is intresting and very fun . I like that its a young person befriending older persons. Good read for a rainy day.

I don't normally pick up 'middle grade' books -- being well past that point of life. But this one looked interesting and I didn't even notice when I got it that that's how it was categorized. It's certainly not a difficult read; at the same time, I didn't really feel like I was reading a "kids" book. I only decided after a few chapters that it was probably not aimed at grown ups 'cause the main POV character was an 11 year old girl called Chloe.

It does feel like there could be a whole series going forward but, as it is this is a stand alone book. The main plot is certainly wrapped up by the end but there are some questions not completely answered. Though, as Chloe notes, stories may always have everything all neat and tidy in the end, but that's rarely the case in real life.

Chloe's life changes forever when she randomly walks into a curiosity shop she hadn't noticed before. There, she meets two lovely gentlemen who turn out to be magicians. Suddenly, a whole world of spells and brownies and charmed furniture opens up to Chloe. But where there's great power, there's also the chance of great danger, and soon Chloe and her new friends find themselves tangled in a scheme decades in the making.

Ah, could I be more pleased with this book? No, it completely lives up to its title and is full of charm, wit, and exactly the right amount of magic. I hope to see many more books from this author!

I gave it all that I could, but in the end I could not care less about the stories or characters. The story progressed at a snails pace, sure there were funny moments between the characters, but at the end of the day I did not like where it was going.

The magic system felt clunky and an attempt at being new and fresh that did not work for me.

Most importantly, where were Chloe’s parents and who lets their teenage daughter just visit a random shop in London to spend all of the time?
So many questions and no answers.

Thank you NetGalley for the copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

One thing's for sure — J.D. Grolic, the author, certainly knows how to impress. Seriously! If he doesn't, he wouldn't have come up with his genius The Extraordinary Curiosities of Ixworth and Maddox.

In this magically compelling middle-grade masterpiece, readers are absolutely taken in the most naturally curious, fascinatingly mysterious, yet undeniably atmospheric english ride to ever exist!

For a children's book, this definitely has some spectacularly dark themes that I did not expect coming out from it. Another thing, although by plot-wise it is whimsical and lovely — the pacing, on the other hand, seems a little slow. In the end, this was still a very satisfying read.

*I was given an ARC in return for a fair and honest review.

Okay, this one was fun! A young girl with emotionally absent parents wanders into a store and finds magic. Magicians, brownies, spells, an underground river...what's not to love? The author is great at sprinkling (really funny) humor throughout the story. I'll be reading this one to my students. Marked down from 5 to 4 stars due solely to the complexity of the resolve. It was a bit hard to understand and I already am prepared to have to do a lot of explaining to the kids when I read it.

Delightful and entertaining book about Ixworth and Maddox’s shop of curiosities. They take Chloe under their wing and introduce her into the world of magic. But all is not what it seems when magicians start disappearing and they must put the clues together to find their friend.
Beautifully told in classic narrative style.

Received a complimentary copy of the book from BookSirens and provided a voluntary review.

A young girl discovers a curious London magic shop and begins a peculiar journey to rescue a missing friend.
This book is not what I thought it would be.
It's a paranormal paradox.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.

Slow start but...

It took a bit to get into the book but basically just the first chapter or so. After that, no problem to keep reading and see where the story took you. This was a first effort by the author and hope he continues. I read it before I got for my granddaughter. I think she'll really enjoy it.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a fun read and reminded me of “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and “FableHaven” with the brownies and of course, the magic.
