Delilah Cruz is a self-loathing death witch who refuses to use her magick.
Iris Williams is a nature-bound green witch who doesn't want to leave the big city.
For a year, they've roomed together in a crummy apartment, lying to their neighbors about being witches, and ignoring that they have the hots for each other.
When their building is sold and they face eviction, Delilah and Iris will have to get a whole lot closer to find a way to save the only apartment they can afford. But it won't be easy.
With angry neighbors blaming the witches for the building’s sale and threatening a lawsuit, they’ll need to change some minds…
…and win some hearts...
…and that's pretty tough when they can't even open their hearts to each other.
Two witches, both unsure of themselves. One goal, to save their home. And a romance that might just make these broke witches whole again.
This is a sweet & spicy Sapphic fantasy romance with a grumpy/sunshine couple, roommates, body positivity, and an HEA.
I loved this book! Very well written. Exciting. Just the right amount of spice! I loved the MCs! Their growth and connection, even when they were fighting it, was sweet and sexy and perfect! Neither witch follows their stereotypes. It was wonderful to see how they grow both together and individually. There are many issues faced that are quite relatable to our current issues. As this is book 1, I am very much looking forward to reading more of this world and from this author!

There's fun characters and steamy sapphic scenes. It's a quick, easy read. I'd love to learn more about the world it's set in and get more indepth character backgrounds. Hopefully not the last we see of these two witches. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I normally struggle to get into novellas as most jump into action and don’t help you connect to the characters enough. This one didn’t do that. I absolutely loved it and loved the characters. Really well done!
this novella reads like underdeveloped fanfiction only worse, because over the course of 150 pages i still don't know why i should give a damn about the two leads and their respective arcs.
Iris and Delilah are two witches living in New York. Delilah is a death witch, and they usually make a lot of money in their work, but she doesn’t want to work as such so she is struggling with money. Iris is a green witch, so it is not normal she is living in a big city, and is struggling too. They share an appartment in a building, and receive a notice that they need to leave as the building is going to be sold. They will join forces to try to save it, falling in love meanwhile.
This is a sapphic romance where opposite attracts, being a grumpy/sunshine couple. It is a full story but taking in account the universe created (different kind of witches and other paranormals, the invisible men or the elections with a candidate opposing them), it looks like the first in a serie - with an interesting beginning, I am looking forward to the next one!
I received an advance copy in exchange of my honest opinion.
I don’t have a negative thing to say. I honestly really loved this book. I loved both characters, I found the plot engaging and I was invested the entire time. I also was really satisfied with the ending. It was a wonderful grumpyxsunshine, opposites attractive combination. One of my favourite things about this book is that it is body positive, though. I NEED more of their journey.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you so much, Kate.
I really enjoyed this debut by Kate Starling. Two Broke Witches is about two completely opposite witches who live in a contemporary world with humans. These two witches are roommates in an apartment building where no paras are allowed so they lie about who they are to get a cheap apartment. A year in, they get a notice that the building will be sold because the owner suddenly passed away and his children wanted to move on. Faced with being homeless because one, they can't afford anywhere to go, and two the increasing anti-para propaganda, these two broke witches come up with plans to try and save their building from being sold. To make matters worse, the tenants of the building hear a fight the two have about being witches, and they get blamed and sued for being the reason the building is for sale.
The sexual tension from being in love with each other secretly for a year as roommates, the plot and the character development between the two main witches make this book very enjoyable indeed.
Delilah, (a Death Witch), is so insecure about who she is and what she looks like. Her skin is so pale, and plus knowing what people think of her kind, makes her hate who she is. She would rather be anyone else, so she sticks to herself and has that grumpy way about her. Iris (a green witch), loves her plates and wants to save all the trees. She is insecure about her petals for hair so she sports a pink wig most of the time. She keeps mostly to herself, having her plants as a company. She gets anxious in large crowds and really doesn't want to be alone, despite what other people think about green witches. These two opposites complement each other, loving each other no matter what, and helping each other overcome their insecurities and I loved reading about that.
Overall, a great debut and can't wait to see what other works this author has in store for us.

What happens when the 'normals', let their fear of the paras turn into prejudice and become the fuel of hate in the midst of a mayoral race where one candidate promises to rid their city of all paranormals while two witches, paras with low self-image and a secret attraction, help one another see themselves through the eyes of the other?
Well, vandalism, acrid smoke, efforts to pacify, lanternflies, arson, death, loss of hope and giving up, plans to retaliate, dark dreams in a strange forest, a renewing of confidence and hope, and an astonishing paranormal act.
Leading to this clash playing out in an unpredictable manner in the public garden behind the building where the two witches had been unwanted tenants.
All the while, a theme of acceptance and belonging, bravery and respect, while finding the courage to challenge oneself and grow, weaves its way through this bodacious story.
Two Broke Witches is creatively written with well-drawn characters that will pull you in, hold your interest, and bring you to a surprising conclusion.
I received an ARC and I'm leaving an honest review.
I would describe this as a cozy, sapphic, urban fantasy with some spice. We have Delilah the death witch and Iris the green (life) witch who have lived together for a year but have not been brave enough to express their feelings for each other. Both have to overcome their feeling of inadequacy before they can put themselves out there enough to take the first step. Delilah is especially insecure about a variety of things: her general appearance, her scent and even her basic nature. Iris is very self conscious about her hair. The story involves a race against time before their building is torn down and they become homeless, and the larger context of the world causes them to have to deal with the added burden of discrimination, which appears to be escalating. While the main plot does have a satisfactory conclusion, there are a few things the author could explore further--such as the Invisible Men, a mayoral race and the witches' combined powers--, making it feel like a great introduction to a series. I hope there will be more Delilah and Iris content soon.

A sweet, hopeful story with a touch of heartbreaking and a HFN. I enjoyed reading this, but at times the hopelessness atmosphere, how these two felt about themselves and each other, kinda sipped through the pages and I started feeling it all. It was upsetting to say the least. But in a way you can make parallels with the real world and how things are developing in society lately. I think that's why it hits harder, because it's exactly the same for a lot of minorities and unfortunately we get to see it front row often.
Anyway, I really liked both witches because they aren't perfect, far from it, and they're starting to see some of their not so great trace of personalities mirrored in each other. And they're growing and I can only hope I'll be allowed to see more of this growth in newer stories, because even though this felt done in a way, there's this feeling we're just beginning to get to know them and what's to come for the city. So one can only hope.
Taken at face value this is a fluffy little romance about two broke witches (exactly as the title says) who are opposites and fall for one another but face challenges. However some of the challenges in here, without spoiling anything have so many connotations and real world comparisons it was hard not to see this. Feels like a YA the way it’s written especially with references to TikTok, YouTube, Reddit and Quora and the language used at times but and I enjoyed it. Nice palate cleanser between my romantasy books I’ve been reading.
If you go in expecting a short, light sapphic romance along the opposites attract line you might enjoy too.
This book was heartwarming, sweet, spicy, and I got to the end too soon. I loved seeing the characters’ growth as individuals, as well as together.
There seems to be a bigger plot in the world the story is set in and I’m keen to find out what happens, assuming that’s been written.
I would have preferred a slower burn, but there wasn’t really space for that in this plot, and there’s a prequel which probably covers that.
And like I mention in most of my reviews, there are some areas that could do with a bit more line editing, but for this one it was only distracting once (which is actually pretty good for an indie novella!).
Two Broke Witches is a well written story about two roommate witches, a death witch and a green witch, who don't conform to those labels. The world they live in has been fully developed and I was able to visualize the majority of the characters. I also found myself sympathizing with the plants. Though not required, the prequel Witchmates provides an introduction to Delilah and Iris. I look forward to reading what comes next in their story.
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A quick and easy read novella, set in modern day New York where paranormal beings live with humans. Two witches one a dark witch and the other a green witch live together until their landlord dies and suddenly the building is to be sold. Most humans are not a fan of paranormal beings so the two broke witches set out to try and keep save them. Flatmates to lovers but as enjoyable as it was, I did find it fairly dull at times and can understand why people DNF. Gave it a go as was on kindle unlimited but don’t think I would have read this if not!
I don't normally read paranormal romance, so I didn't know what to expect. I found a really sweet story that felt current in the ways people were reacting to other folks' differences. The two MC's really grew in me over the span of the book, and I appreciated how true to life the sapphic love scenes felt (and very steamy!). I'd enjoy getting a chance to read more by this author.

Wow what a epic storyline I loved the main characters their journey having to find a new flat their dedicated too each others needs only to failing then realising that it's better for them to conquer it together all the while deepening their love for each other its a beautiful fantasy story definitely must read congratulations
I really enjoyed this book, it was a cute, relatable story. I really enjoyed the characters & their development the HEA was cute and not too cheesy. There isn’t too much sex or smut in it but I really liked the little bits that were.
I enjoyed this book very much. It made me smile, laugh, swoon, and cry (all the emotions). I love how the main characters are totally opposite but bridge their differences into something special.
This was such an adorable & easy read for me. I really enjoyed the main characters & it was very unique in my opinion for a book about witches. Gorgeous cover art as well. 💜✨️
