Drostan Macquarie, the fierce battle-hardened Highlander, was still a young lad when his father first warned him of the ancient curse on the Macquarie clan. Should any of our kin sire a bastard, the entire clan will be cursed to die out. Drostan vowed then to live his life alone, far from the reach of the curse. But on the eve of Beltane, a sizzling kiss with a mysterious lass ignites Drostan’s blood…and threatens his vow.Amelia MacLeod is on the run, desperate to escape her past, and an abusive family. But Wolf Isle isn’t just a place to hide, it may be her only hope of redemption—if she can doom her clan’s enemy, the Macquaries. Only, she imagined her enemy would be a hideous brute, not a big, brawny, and kind-hearted Highlander like Drostan.Because now Amelia’s discovered a way to destroy the Macquarie Clan for good—if she can bring herself to infiltrate the clan, seduce Drostan, and bring about the Macquarie curse. Of course, she hasn’t accounted for the far-reaching consequences of her own dark past…or her traitorous desire for the Highlander she came to destroy.
I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!
I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).
I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

Plot summary (of this and every book this author has written): A brawny Scottish warrior rescues and then sexses up an innocent maiden who’s good with a bow and arrow. They sex some more whilst an evil villain (who is usually one of her family members) is out to get said maiden. The warrior is brawny, the maiden is beautiful, so more sex happens. Lots of characters appear from many past series’ who are also brawny heroes with their beautiful wives and whatever kids they’ve spawned (because of all the sex), don’t try to keep track- it doesn’t really matter to the plot. More sex and brawniness ensues and the villain is defeated, the end.
My review: there isn’t really much to this. It’s not terrible but very formulaic and the plot is very meh, but it has a brawny Scotsman and plenty of sexy times so 🤷🏼♀️.
Thanks to NetGalley for the book, my opinions are my own.
This is book four in The Brothers of Wolfe Isle series. It features Drostan, the fourth Macquarie brother and Amelia, who has come to Wolfe Isle to avenge her brother.
There isn't really much going on in this book, but it is a fun quick read. If you enjoy highlander romances with a brawny Scotsman and plenty of steam, then this is definitely worth the read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This was such a fun and entertaining historical romance and a great addition to The Brothers of Wolf Isle series. I’ve really enjoyed this series and was excited to revisit Wolf Isle and its inhabitants. The Macquerie brothers are all such hunky highlanders, and Drostan, the MMC in this book is no exception.
Because of the curse put on his family, Drostan has decided never to marry or have children. Of course, as soon as he meets Lia, his feelings toward marriage and his future change. Lia has run away from her abusive brother, who has always said the Macquarie brothers were terrible men. Intent on vengeance, Lia travels to Wolf Isle to kill one of the brothers, but Lia quickly realizes what she’s been told might not be the truth. The Macquarie brothers are the opposite of what she expected. Kind, welcoming, and helpful, they welcome Lia and treat her well, much to her surprise, and she begins to change her perception of the brothers, especially Drostan.
Lia and Drostan have a great enemies-to-lovers romance, and I like how they come together. Both are strong characters intent on taking charge of their lives. Lia refuses to be a political pawn and be married off to an older man for her brother’s gain. Drostan will do whatever he must to protect his family and those he loves. I think both learn a lot about themselves and life as they grow closer together. However, coming from enemy clans, the pair has to decide if their love is worth fighting and changing for.
With secrets, intrigue, danger, pirates, a swoon-worthy Highlander, and a woman bent on revenge, The Highlander’s Secret Avenger is an engaging and romantic story, and though it’s part of a series, it can be read on its own. Special thanks to Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
Barbara’s rating: 4.4 out of 5 Stars Series: The Brothers of Wolf Isle #4 Publication Date: 8/21/23 Period: Tudor – 1548 Highlands of Scotland Number of Pages: 237
Be still my heart! Those five Macquarie brothers are all large, handsome, brawny, intelligent, honorable, and determined to break the curse on their clan while reclaiming their home – Wolf Isle. The outward manifestation of the curse – an ancient willow tree – is showing more and more signs of life as each brother finds his true love. Will Drostan find his HEA or will he seal the fate of the Macquarie clan? You’ll just have to read this exciting, well-paced, excellently written story to see!
Amelia MacLeod has been sorely mistreated by her family – especially her two brothers. Since her mother died, Amelia has no protection at all and is being offered up as the prize to win an alliance with the powerful MacLean clan. Well, she’ll have none of that – she’ll prove how valuable she is to her clan by single-handedly defeating her clan’s biggest enemy, the Macquarie brothers. She knows the curse – and she knows how to use it. She just has to seduce one of the Macquarie brothers. Then – one of them rescues her and perhaps they aren’t the monsters she’d been told they were. OOPS!
Drostan Macquarie has always known he would be the one to bring his family down – the one who would allow the curse to come to fruition. Knowing this, he took measures to circumvent it, but – can the curse be circumvented by trickery? He may find out because the young woman he just rescued is definitely tempting. Sparks fly when he sees her – he cannot stop himself. Uh Oh!
What will happen when Drostan finds out about Amelia’s betrayal? Can he stand by and let her go? Then, there is the dastardly Jandeau who seems to have more lives than a cat – what will he do?
This was a lovely, fast-paced, exciting read and whets the appetite for the next, and final, book in the series. Yes, Eagan is the last man standing, and, to completely break the curse, he must find his true love. I wonder which lady will snare him.
I can definitely recommend this book; however, I would recommend reading the entire series in the order they were released to get the full enjoyment and understanding of the curse and Jandeau who is the overarching villain of the series. Happy reading!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
4.5-5 Stars! Such a fantastic, entertaining and enjoyable read! This is the 4th book in ‘The Brothers of Wolf Isle’ series and can be read as a standalone. I read the first book in this series but unfortunately missed books 2 & 3, which I now have to go back and read since I can’t stand not knowing how they got their HEA ending. This book has everything required for an amazing historical Scottish romance… multiple villains, a witch, a buff & brawny Highlander, a strong female main character, action, ‘sexy times’ action, betrayal, love, hate, secrets, danger, pirates, cats, possible pregnancy, a family curse with a bleeding, cursed tree, family and a HEA ending. I love how Heather McCollum connects her other series ‘Highland Isles’ main characters to this series as secondary characters. It makes it easier to follow along, keeping names straight and I love getting the life updates of characters I’ve read and fallen in love with before. But you can still understand and enjoy if you haven’t read her other books. The main characters in this book were Lia/Amelia and Drosten and I absolutely loved both of them. Yes, Lia didn’t have the best intentions at first but she was still likable. Drosten is a protector and he’s so sweet. Not sure men, especially those in power, were really this kind back then but it’s a nice thought. I’m not crazy with how fast the sexy times happened but other than that, I loved this book! Heather McCollum is the most talented writer and whenever I see a new book from her, I HAVE to read it A.S.A.P! She always writes winners that I highly recommend. Trust me, you won’t be sorry! *I received this book at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
The Highlander's Secret Avenger by Heather McCollum is an enchanting historical romance filled with adventure, humor, and heart. Drostan Macquarie and Amelia "Lia" MacLeod's love story will keep you entertained until the very end.
Drostan and Lia are a perfect match for each other. Lia was the shining star in this story, taking center stage with her wanton behavior. Their love story was magical to see unfold.
You won't want to miss Drostan and Lia's story!
Dual POV Can be read as a standalone
Tropes: enemies to lovers, protector, secrets

Really loved this book! Heather McCollum has yet again delivered a wonderful historical romance full of adventure, danger and mystery. The story of Drostan and Lia immediately pulls you in and from their first meeting you are hooked. I haven’t read the other books in this series, but now I absolutely have to! I can’t wait for the final book to see what happens with the curse, but in the mean time, I’ll get all caught up on the rest of the series. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC of this book so that I could give my honest review.
A woman determined to avenge her brother falls for the very man she’s come to destroy in The Highlander’s Secret Avenger. Heather McCollum returns to Wolf Isle and the Macquarie brothers who are trying their best to break the family curse.
Drostan Macquarie rescues kittens and damsels in distress, so how can you not adore him? The Macquarie brothers must find the true meaning of love and not father any children out of wedlock in order to break the family curse. Drostan is determined to not be the cause of his family’s downfall…and then he meets Lia. The mysterious woman with secrets won’t tell him why she wants to come to Wolf Isle, but even with the red flags in front of him Drostan can’t help but fall for her beauty and strength.
Amelia MacLeod is desperate to escape her brutal brother and thinks the only way to find safety at home is to prove her worth by destroying the Macquaries. Of course, once she gets to know them and their clan she can’t bring herself to do it, but will the lies catch up with her? Drostan isn’t the monster she was raised to believe he was, and she falls hard and fast for the Highland warrior. Lia and Drostan have an easy chemistry that makes the pages of The Highlander’s Secret Avenger fly by. I really liked them together and their romance had a good mix of sweetness and spice. I was rooting for Lia’s secrets not to come between them, but what happens I’ll leave readers to discover.
Lia and Drostan’s story is the fourth in the Brothers of Wolf Isle series but you can jump in here if you like. The evil pirate Jandeau is always a threat in the background, ready to destroy the brothers and the women they love. There’s also the family curse, which features heavily in this story. I look forward to the Macquaries breaking the curse and seeing their home and loved ones safe and sound. I am very much looking forward to the youngest Macquarie brother finding love and breaking the curse once and for all.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This next installment was Drostan and Lia. It took a bit for Lia to warm up to me and I’m still not quite sure she did at the end. I think that’s more why it’s a 4 not a 5 for me. But having said that, I really am enjoying this series.
Drostan was a cinnamon roll-ish type of hero that got really betrayed by the heroine. I’m not quite happy about that but the first half set the stage. As with all HM’s books, the second half is action packed. This continues the arc of a villain who has been around in the previous books.
I like the way the HM writes with the background of the larger political or shared enemy amongst the books in this series. It was nice to see previous characters from another series.
The heroine did something just really stupid and was of course found out. I liked that things weren’t made easy for her after that scene and also that the H had to go through some feelings at being betrayed.
I like this series and its curse and seeing the island grow and interest more with others. I look forward to the final (I think) book with Eagan.
I’m also hoping that some characters in here could open up to another series or spin off for a second generation of the Aros series. Also a Brodie needs a little closure for some things in this book so maybe we can see that too.
I devoured this book from beginning to end. The little bit of action it has is the perfect complement to the sweet story of two people who thought they'd never find love finding it in each other. Drostan Macquarie vowed to live his life alone after growing up hearing of the curse upon his kin, but all thoughts of the curse leave his mind when he rescues the beautiful Lia from some very bad men. Amelia 'Lia' MacLeod ran away from home with a half-formed plan to avenge her brother's death at the hands of the Macquaries, only they're nothing like the savages she'd heard they were and she can't keep the one brother that keeps rescuing her out of her heart. Heather McCollum is one of the best at creating conflicted characters and giving them some drama without it getting too dark or taking away from the romance. Both Lia and Drostan have dark things in their past, but it's obvious once they meet that it's all going to work out. You also know that Lia is in danger, but there's no doubt that Drostan will do anything to save her. It's all perfectly balanced.
Delighted thanks to NetGalley and Entangled: Scandalous for the most excellent romantic read!
The Highlander’s Secret Avenger. This starts out very well with all characters bringing humor to this story based on so much love for family. The lead characters Lia and Drostan kept me entertained with the passion that grows with the two hour by hour. The story of both families and their history gave the story its context to the book. I would have like to read more interactions with Drostan and his wards. Pip is the cutest one for me. That would have added more humor. Sia was a great add, but the reactions Lia had with Sia had me questioning is there a real connection between the two that gives a balanced connection between the two. The romance I found was sweet. The love scenes good too. The story was enjoyable. Until next time readers. Read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
My very first Highlander book, I didn’t know it was the fourth book in a series so I went in blindly. Even if I didn’t get to read the first three (yet) the main points of the clan’s story were very clear. The Macquarie brothers are cursed, and one by one, each has fallen in love, and the main villain in the series is the pirate Jandeau! I will definitely go back and read about the other brothers. And will try to patiently wait to read about the last brother.
I loved that Amelia was a very strong female character, she was brave and fierce. I also liked how kind and respectful Drostan was towards her, always rescuing the damsel in distress… and the damn cat! Lol
The book was very fast paced, full of action, romance and some spice! I enjoyed it very much, Ye will enjoy tis book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled for allowing me to read this advance copy!
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Drostan is happy with his life until he meets Amelia. When the two meet, their chemistry is amazing. This book was an enjoyable read.
Action packed and emotionally thrilling adventure filled with engaging charters, witty banter, heart racing twists and undeniable passion. Was a great read from beginning to end and so fun to read.
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this novel.
I devoured this novel in a few hours. It was a short read that was fast, engaging, and easy to get lost in. Although part of a series I read it as a stand alone (I've only read one other novel from this series). Drostan Macquarie was the perfect grumpy but kind highlander. Amelia Macleod was equally lovable and brave (and as always it's nice to see heroines that can save themselves at times). The tension between these characters could have built up more before they finally admitted their feelings for one another. It seemed like they fell for each other kind of fast -- which is better than it getting annoying which often happens if it drags on too much, but also, given this situation, I think it could have been a bit more. My only other criticism is that the story ended a bit abruptly. I was expecting another chapter or epilogue.
This is story was just a perfect escape and just what I needed. I'm excited to read the other novels in this series and get the full stories of the other brothers and wives.
For when you're vibing with... Big scary men who are actually soft, heroines recovering from trauma, two houses, both alike in dignity--
Drostan Macquarie's clan is cursed--if any member of their family sires a bastard, the Macquaries will die out. As a result, he lives in isolation... until he meets Amelia (Lia) MacLeod. Lia's family is the sworn enemy of the Macquaries, and she's in a perfect position to take Drostan down. But she's much more inclined to fall in love with him.
I was drawn in by the concept of the curse, and you do get a lot of what I like about McCollum's books in this: a touch of magic, a lot of burly man-ness, and a unique (for current historicals) setting. I do think it could have gone a bit farther, but you'll enjoy it if you like your darkness tempered with the soft (and a bit of cheese).
Quick Takes:
--So, I do love this curse, and it is a focal part of the book and Drostan's decision making processes. But... I felt a little lost. I think this book can stand alone, but it's kind of a lot of lore to get plunged into, and there are a lot of references to past heroes and heroines. Which makes sense; I just think that it could've been written in a way that felt a bit more isolated, a bit more independent. Highland Warrior is a book of hers that I think worked very well on its own, despite being the second in a series, because the hero was a bit more disconnected from his brothers. Here, Drostan was in theory, but in reality he felt very linked still.
--This my fifth McCollum book, and I will say that she definitely has tropes she falls back on a lot. Brothers, a bit of a paranormal touch, gruff warriors who are actually incredibly sweet and prone to cuddling kittens. It can get repetitive, but if you know that her offerings are your sweet spot, it will work for you in a way that is comforting and relaxing.
--Lia is introduced in a "oh, that young boy is actually an adult woman" way, which I... unabashedly love. It's very old school, and gratifying in that sense.
--This is a pretty short book, which I'm fine with. However, I do think there could have been more build up in the love story. I didn't fully feel the chemistry between the leads, and I think that took away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
--I do really appreciate that McCollum goes for a non-standard setting, and while the Scottishness of her characters definitely veers into camp.... that's not a bad thing. Like, I kind of think that's the brand.
The Sex Stuff:
McCollum writes a good, emotionally emphatic sex scene. There's never a ton of sex in her books, and nothing super out of the box happens in them. But they're solid and have an earthiness to them that emphasizes the sense of world, somehow? Like, they don't feel like the types of sex scenes you see in more standard Regency books.
I do wish I'd read the previous books before this one (and maybe I will later) but if you like Heather McCollum, you'll be pleased with it.

As a young lad Drostan Macquarie had been forewarned by his father that there was an old curse on their clan. If anyone in their clan should ever sire a bairn out of wedlock their clan will be cursed and will die out!
Drostan swore he would never put his loved ones in danger and would die alone. That was until he met this bonnie lass who catches him in her web of desire with the most passionate heated kiss! This highland goddess lit a fire in both his heart and soul! She threatens everything he loves and holds dear and had previously promised he would never ever do!
Drostan is unaware that Amelia Grant has escaped her abusive family and her previous life! The one way she can do this is to destroy her brother’s biggest enemy the Macquarie’s and bring this curse into action. The problem is she is filled with guilt, she was expecting Drostan to be this horrible, cruel, hideous, monster. Instead he has the face of an angel and seems to be a Prince among men! He has saved her on more than one occasion and even saved a very unappreciative kitten! He is kind to everyone except to his enemies.
Again my go to author Heather McCollum spins another extraordinary highland masterpiece that this historical fiction reader absolutely loved! An excellent take of an incredible, highland, adventure where McCollum has written a choice story. It is filled with a special understanding of human motivation, forgiveness and love.
You can read this as a stand alone book or in series order. For me I always read in series order. It is an easy decision for me to make. As McCollum has a rare gift in her storytelling ability that readers definitely do not want to miss!
Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A lot of the time, my "reviews" are less of a review per se and more a collection of notes that I write for myself so that I can remember what happens in each story, along with what I liked, disliked, had questions about, favorite parts, etc. I have a TBI and otherwise my memory will not serve me. Others may not find them helpful, just as a disclaimer.
Caim- Scots Gaelic meaning Sanctuary; an invisible circle of protection, drawn around the body with the hand, to remind one of being safe and loved, even in the darkest of times.
I feel like Lea's excuse of feeling guilty about not being sad that her brother Ian was killed as the reason why she wanted to doom the Macquarie clan. It just seems flimsy. I don't see any other reason why she would've done it, because it worked better with the story that Allister wanted to sell/wed her off and Ian was a monster, so it doesn't make sense for her to mourn him. Maybe if she wanted to ruin the Macquarie clan as a way of buying her freedom from Allister and the arranged marriage with the McKinnon.
I was prepared to like Brody McKinnon- until he offered to make a deal with Jandeau, and it seems that was never brought up to Kieran and the others. Even Lea didn't mention it.
I think Jondeaux was expecting the Macquarie's to attack with a ship, so it was clever for Drostan to go on a stealth mission by dinghy.
I'm glad Murdough McKinnon made it out alive- even though he was painted as a bit of a coward most interested in his own self preservation and will to live, I liked him well enough. He had enough bravery to stay with Lea, when he could've gone back to McKinnon instead of enlisting on Jondeaux's ship.
I love that they might not have children, and adopt instead. I think that's beautiful, and represents different families.
I was expecting more from the willow tree- the leaves were okay, then wilted when Lea sailed away, and then were okay again. I was expecting.... Idk, something more visual. Maybe healthier bark? Less blood from the dagger? I did like that the tree immediately showed visible signs of failing health, as soon as Lea was sent away. I also loved the image of Griselle watching the ship. It also appears that the tree wasn't wilting because of a bastard possibly being born, but because Drostan was about to miss out on his true love.
I feel certain Jondeaux is still alive. Without his body, I don't think he's dead. I'm hoping he gets taken down in Eagan's story.

Back to back Highland romances! I usually mix them up a bit but two were publishing the same day so here we are!
The Highlander’s Secret Avenger is the fourth instalment of the Brother’s of Wolfe Isle series by Heather McCollum. This series can be read stand alone, this is my first book of the series and I didn’t feel lost with any background details.
The Macquarie brothers are cursed, or so the legend says. After their ancestor got a local girl pregnant and then refused to wed her, she hanged herself and her mother saved the child from her womb. The mother, a witch cursed both Wolf Island and any male descendants of the Macquarie clan.
Drostan Macquarie decided long ago that the best way to avoid the curse would be to avoid relationships at all. While he’d definitely had his fair share of fun, he would never settle down. His clan depended on it.
Lia Macleod is on the run and has many secrets. Arriving on Wolf Island dressed as a man, she finds herself in immediate danger when local men discover it’s not a lad under those breeches.
After rescuing Lia (on several occasions) Drostan can’t help but be drawn to her. He knows she’s keeping things from him but he can’t seem to let her be. There is an attraction and connection with her he never thought he would experience.
When Lia’s evil brother shows up to take her back home, secrets and lies are revealed and to Drostan’s disbelief Lia agrees to wed the older man her brother had arranged for her before she ran away.
What happens when secrets and lies aren’t all they seem? Will Drostan find Lia and discover the truth of her love? This was a good typical highland romance I’ve come to expect from this author. Intertwined family stories and histories while incorporating spicy romance. This is a 4 star read for me! I’ll likely go back and read the full series now that o have read this one!
The Highlander's Secret Avenger Brothers of Wolf Isle #4 Heather McCollum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Highlander Droston Macquarie, was just a young lad when his father first told him about the curse on his clan. It is said that if any of their kin sire a bastard, the entire clan will be cursed and die out. From then on Droston vowed to live his life alone, far from the reach of the curse. But on the eve of Beltane, a very passionate kiss with a mysterious lass ignights Droston's blood like no other woman ever has.
Amelia McLeod is running from her past in an abusive family. But Wolf Isle is not just a place to hide, it may be her only hope. If she can doom her clan's enemy, the Macquaries. She had imagined her enemy would be an awful person, not a big brawny, and kind hearted Highlander like Droston.
Now Amelia seems to have discovered a way to destroy the Macquarie clan for good, that is, if she can bring herself to get close and become part of the clan. All she has to do is seduce Droston, and bring about the Macquarie curse. The only thing is, she didn't account for the far reaching consequences of her own dark past, or her traitorous heart for falling hard for the one man she hoped to destroy.
Wow once again Heather McCollum has literly blown my mind. This is one amazing book. I really enjoyed the story. It had a great plot and kept me busy reading for as long as I could. Droston was amazing just like his other brothers. Amelia was totally made for Droston. They got along really well and there was alot of heat. I mean it doesn’t get hotter or better then this. This author seems to get better with every book she writes. You never knew what was coming next and when it did it floored you. Ms. McCollum's books are filled with historical tidbits and of course I could almost hear the Scottish accent in my head while I was reading. All in all I would definitely recommend this book to historical romance lovers everywhere. When Ms. McCollum sits down to write you know it is going to be fantastic. I can't wait to read the next book about the last brother.
3.5 Stars ** I received an advanced readers copy to read and review from the publisher **
In this fourth book of the wolf isle series we get to see the fourth Macquarie brother fall in love, only this time it's unknowingly with the sister of their rivals the McCleods, Lia, who has taken it upon herself to destroy the Macquaries by any means necessary.
Pros: Really great hero and heroine, I really enjoyed bother Drostan and Lia in this and while I felt like maybe a little deeper dig into Drostan's backstory for why he was so concerned about being the one to cause the curse would have been nice it was still covered enough that his actions made sense. I really liked Lia, I felt like she had a lot of depth that I've seen missing in some of the female characters in these books and I think as a reader you're able to empathize with her. I felt like the plot for this one was interesting as well and obviously ties pretty heavily into the first book of the series.
Cons: it's not so much of a con in the plot but maybe the marketing? The series states these can be read as stand alones and while I think you technically could manage that and still understand the plot I don't believe it would be nearly as enjoyable of a read with out the depth of knowledge from the previous books since there is an over arching villain throughout the series. I was a little upset with some of the actions of side characters (I'm looking at you McClean ladies) that resulted in very negative consequences but were never mentioned in the end of the book, I guess everyone was just happy to be alive and so were forgiving.
Overall I felt this was a pretty good read and if you've read the previous books in the series you'll for sure enjoy this one, if you haven't but are interested in this one I would suggest starting at book 1 because it's just more enjoyable that way and they are quick reads.
'Brothers of Wolf Isle' series is one of my favorite Highlander romance books, not just because of the captivating stories and recurring crazy villains but because the characters from Book 1 have become more of a family to me. So as a reader who loves the series, I enjoyed returning to the world of Wolf Isle with the Macquarie Brothers, their wives, and friends. The series is incomplete without the infamous Macquarie curse, which plays a critical role in this book.
The Highlander’s Secret Avenger is about Droston, the fourth Macquarie brother, finding his happily ever after. But not before a lot of misunderstanding and a dramatic, heroic fight to save his lady love, Amelia, from their enemy, Captain Jandeau.
Amelia, a.k.a Lia, comes to Wolf Isle to avenge her brother with the misconception that the Macquaries’ are evil and need to pay for their crimes. With the Isle famous for its curse, she decides to seduce a Macquarie and exact her revenge, dooming everyone associated with the clan. Thankfully, Lia has more sense, and once she sees that everything she heard is a lie, she is left feeling guilty and much closer to falling in love with Droston. But can he and his entire family forgive her for her initial plans for them?
This was a fun light read for me cause it was reading about characters I like. A lot more secondary characters from Heather McCollum's previous series make appearances. We also get to know more about the curse, but more questions are raised about it than answered in this book.
The only thing lacking for me was the romance between Droston and Amelia. As individuals, their stories and concerns were interesting to read, but the romance between them was rushed and hence lacking chemistry. All in all, a great addition to the series, though not the best.
I received an ARC from netgalley in exchange for my honest opinions.
The Highlander’s Secret Avenger by Heather McCollum Brothers of Wolf Island #4
Three of five brothers overshadowed by a curse have found their true loves and begun to change the future for their clan bringing back t o life Wolf Island and a tree that seemed to have died. Two brothers remain, Drostan and Eagan, and this is Drostan’s time to do his part to break the curse.
What I liked: * Amelia “Lia McLeod: sister to two horrible brothers, skilled archer, running from a forced marriage, has plans for revenge that go awry when she meets the family that are supposed to be her enemies * Droston Macquairie: twin, fourth in line of five brothers, strong, caring, protective, believes he will have trouble with the curse, interested in Lia until a secret is exposed * Sia: six-toed cat, saved more than once by Droston, could be lethal to Lia, finds a safe home * Getting to see the brothers and how they are doing * The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * The part the curse and the willow tree play in the series * Grisselle: older woman on Wolf Island who takes in stray children and women needing a safe harbor, descendent of the woman who cursed the Macquairie family, knows more about the curse than we have heard so far * Getting to see some of the characters from previous books * Wondering if the part of the curse related to tampering with the willow tree is true or not – hope to find out in the next book * Looking forward to reading the conclusion and finding out who Eagan ends up with
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about what makes someone as evil as Lia’s brothers and the pirate Jandeau

The Highlander's Secret Avenger by Heather McCollum is the 4th book of the Brothers of Wolf Isle Series and my second book of this wonderful author.
Drostan Macquarie is one of the five Macquarie brothers. There's this special curse the whole clan has to deal with since Drostan was a little lad. Should any of their clan sire a bastard, they'll all be cursed and die out. So Drostan decided to stay alone forever to save his clan... but then... on Beltane eve there's this mysterious lass with a huge secret of her own...
Well I started this series with this book and I'm now so intrigued to read the other books because it's obvious that I need to meet Drostan's brothers! Ha! When I fell in love with Heather McCollum's writing style I also fell in love with the characters she creates! OMG, I know this period wasn't the most romantic one... but it felt like i travelled back in time while I read this book. I fell in love with Drostan right from the beginning. C'mon! A big, handsome Highlander with a heart of gold?! WHO COULDN'T LOVE A GUY LIKE THIS?! ❤️😌 And Lia?! The sassy lass! Ha! I loved her as well! I don't wanna tell you too much about her so I don't ruin her secrets for you. 😉 But let me tell you. I absolutely loved the chemistry of Drostan and Lia! I could feel their emotions through my Kindle and enjoyed every moment of it! OH MY GOODNESS! There's soooo much suspense and chemistry and heartwarming companionship. I loved how the whole clan supported each other.
Can't wait for more! Well... I know that Heather McCollum has a lot more books I can read. Hehehe. Perfect!
Thank you so much to Entangled Publishing and Heather McCollum for this ARC via NetGalley. This is my honest review in my own words.
Since he was a young boy, Drostan Macquarie was sure that he would be the one to bring ruin to his clan, but he has taken steps to prevent that from happening and he has sworn to never marry. But the arrival of a mysterious woman on Mull looking to go to Ulva Island is going to throw a wrench in his well-ordered plans!
In an effort to save herself, Amelia “Lia” Mcleod decides to avenge her brother’s death at the hands of the Macquaries by using the curse put upon their family long ago to destroy their clan, but never in her wildest dreams did she think she would actually come to like, let alone care for the Macquaries, especially Drostan Macquarie! By the time she realizes she can’t go through with her plan to destroy them, the truth of her intentions are made known and any chance for happiness is gone – or is it?
I loved this book, I have enjoyed all the books in this series, but in my opinion, Lia and Drostan’s story was exceptional. I loved them together and individually, they are both keeping secrets and neither is looking for love, but love finds them anyway. This story is sure to have something for everyone, it is filled with secrets, curses, kitten rescues, jealousy, highlanders climbing in kilts, great secondary characters, pirates, steamy love scenes, betrayal, heartache, forgiveness, and a very sweet HEA. This is the fourth book in the series and while it can be read as a standalone, I would strongly recommend reading the series in order for the best reader experience. I am happy to recommend this title and can’t wait for the final installment!!!
4.5 stars

This is the 4th book in the Brothers of Wolf Isle series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. Only, she imagined her enemy would be a hideous brute, not a big, brawny, and kind-hearted Highlander like Drostan. Because now Amelia’s discovered a way to destroy the Macquarie Clan for good—if she can bring herself to infiltrate the clan, seduce Drostan, and bring about the Macquarie curse. Of course, she hasn’t accounted for the far-reaching consequences of her own dark past…or her traitorous desire for the Highlander she came to destroy.
I definitely enjoyed this story! It had some differences from most Highlander books-case in point, the curse! Not what you usually have to worry about when it comes to Highlanders and any kind of Scottish romance book! I enjoyed how their story plays out and how they truly come together to make it so they both can be happy. Especially after everything that Amelia's already been through with her family!
Drostan Macquarie was still a young lad when his father first warned him of the ancient curse on the Macquarie clan. Should any of our kin sire an illegitimate child, the entire clan will be cursed to die out. Drostan vowed then to live his life alone, far from the reach of the curse. But on the eve of Beltane, a sizzling kiss with a mysterious lass ignites Drostan’s blood. Amelia MacLeod is on the run, desperate to escape her past, and an abusive family. But Wolf Isle isn’t just a place to hide, it may be her only hope of redemption if she can doom her clan’s enemy, the Macquaries. Only, she imagined her enemy would be a hideous brute, not a big, brawny, and kind-hearted Highlander like Drostan. This is the fourth book in the series & it could easily be read on it own. However there are the threads of the curse & the willow tree & also the villain Jandeau who keeps rearing his head. I loved this enemies to lovers story & loved both Drostan & Lia. He’s the brawny but caring warrior & she's the young woman who's spent a lifetime of abuse from her horrid brothers. As Lia comes to know Drostan & the rest of his family she realises who the villains really are but her brother sees her as a pawn so there’s no way he's going to let her escape. A very well written fast paced book with sizzling chemistry, treachery & a love that is put to the test. I thoroughly enjoyed their very rocky journey to a HEA My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
The Highlander’s Secret Avenger, book 4 of the Brothers of Wolf Isle by Heather McCollum, is a wonderful tale in this fabulous series. The Macquarie’s of Wolf Isle face an ancient curse, should anyone sire a bastard the entire clan would be cursed to die out. For generations since that curse was placed on the clan, the old tree in the bailey has been dead and and the knife in the tree has been bleeding, but three of the Macquarie brothers have found love and married and with each one the tree has healed just a little. But Drostan has sworn never to fall in love and marry. But then he shares a kiss with a beautiful lass he had rescued, and she makes him question his decision. Amelia “Lia” MacLeod comes to Wolf Isle to ruin the Macquarie’s and prove to her abusive family that she has more value than as a pawn to be sold to the highest bidder, afterall, they killed her brother. But she didn’t expect to like Drostan Macquarie, or his family. What I loved about this book was the way Drostan was always rescuing Lia. She was strong and could take care of herself, but she always seems to get into some sort of trouble. It was great seeing all of the family together, as well as characters from other series as well. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next for the Macquarie’s and if the curse will finally be broken. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the fabulous Tim Campbell, who as always does such an amazing job!
I must admit that I am reading this series out of order as The Highlander's Secret Avenger is Book 4 and I haven't read the previous books. However, that did not interfere with my reading and loving the brothers of Wolf Island!
Drostan is a handsome, brawny, creative and caring Highland warrior who lives on Ulva Island. Wolf Island lives under a curse and each Macquarie brother must do his part to prevent the island and it's inhabitants from dying. This intriguing plot line runs throughout the series and all the characters play supporting and important roles in this story.
Amelia McLeod is a young woman sorely abused by her brothers and seen only as a marriageable pawn to improve their standing. After her younger brother is killed, she is determined to prove her worth by finding and destroying the Macquarie clan. Her determination fails as she discovers a family so unlike her own and she begins to question all she has heard about this clan. Of course, after spending time with Droston, she begins to feel the flame of attraction! Her resolve begins to crumble until her brother appears, demands her return and opens her eyes to the evil in her family.
I devoured this book quickly and made a note to read the previous 3 in the series. Now I am waiting for the youngest brother's story and truly happy ending to the curse on Ulva Island.
Oh my, get out your smelling salts - Drostan is One Hot Hero! I was half in love with him just from the cover (yes, I'm shallow like that) but I was not prepared for how sweet and tender he would be! His meet-cute with Lia is the first time he rescues her kitten, but certainly not the last. And then - when it turns out she's highly allergic to kittens - he has to rescue her from the tiny beast! After that scene, I was a total goner for him.
Lia is trying to reconcile herself to her brother's death - she knows she should grieve his loss, but her relief at having her tormentor gone is giving her serious guilt issues. So, she sets out to avenge his death to assuage the guilt, instead finding out a whole lot more of the truth than she was told.
Just as it looks like everything is worked out, it's all blown up by a jealous woman and a ruthless neighboring clan leader. This is just the kind of testing circumstances that I love to read about, how each of our lead characters have to reach down deep into their hearts and trust their feelings for the other, even when a HEA looks absolutely hopeless.
The curse on the Macquarie brothers is much more of the focus of this story than it has been in the earlier books, and I am really enjoying reading about the willow tree's progression in showing that the clan is on the right track. Just enough of a supernatural aura to add a bit of the "fated mates" touch. I absolutely love this series and this book especially, and highly recommend them for anyone who enjoys historical romances. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
