Emotional Torture: A Memoir of Addiction, Traumatic Brain Injury and Trauma

Rate this book
Emotional Torture - a deeply touching and vulnerable memoir of addiction, mental health, and recovery.

Beth grows up in a seemingly idyllic fashion that comprised of big family get-togethers, unforgettable trips with friends, life-changing travel, multiple years of academics, and where she was arguably driven the most, her athletics.

Her mother - a typical "soccer mom", hard-working and self-sacrificing with a successful career in nursing - fell into narcotics addition, spiraling quickly into severe alcoholism. While caring for her mother in the throes of her addiction, her father, the rock in her life, tragically suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. She was up against the challenge of managing their care, in a time where they were both barely clinging to life.

Tenacious and driven - a self-described type A personality - Beth had to learn how to accept help for herself in the midst of coping with these new versions of her mother and father, while desperately seeking help for their recoveries. She shares what she has learned in the hopes of inspiring others who are coping with traumatic events in their lives.

Emotional Torture - a must read.

This book is about Beth’s immense struggles as she navigates her mothers severe addiction and her fathers horrific accident and subsequent recovery.

Her book is elegantly written in her perspective as she grows up and realizes the severity of her mothers illness. It describes how she is hit with insurmountable responsibilities as she deals with her fathers sudden life threatening accident, while concurrently navigating her mothers addiction.

What she doesn’t talk about is how resilient she is for facing the struggles she encountered with such grace, determination and strength. The trauma she has been forced to navigate throughout her life is profound and I am blown away at her ability to speak so eloquently about it all.

Beth I am so sorry for the things you’ve had to experience, witness, and process the things that still haunt you in the night. I wish you incredible amounts of healing and good fortune, but most of all I wish you peace ❤️
