Kealani Netane brings her Samoan heritage to a picture book that exudes dancing joy. Young Tala watches her aunt dance the traditional taualuga and yearns to be as graceful and to glow as brilliantly but her feet and legs just won’t move like that. With some instruction from Aunty Sina, lots of practice, determination and a bit of bravery, Tala is able to siva/dance beautifully at her grandmother’s birthday party. Netane embeds several Samoan terms into context rich text but in case that isn’t enough, a glossary is included. Vietnamese Dung Ho’s llustrations, done using Photoshop, add to the exuberance of story and extend to the end papers. Great addition to any elementary library and provides a mentor text when discussing determination.

Thanks for the print arc, Texas Library Association’s annual conference and Orchard Books/Scholastic.

Enchanted by her Aunty Sina, Tala is inspired to learn the taualuga, a Samoan traditional dance. However, Tala struggles to get the motions right. Her Aunty Siva offers Tala encouragement and reassurance, telling Tala to practice from the heart. Tala practices, but she still freezes during her first performance at Grandma’s party. With support from her family, Tala finds the strength within her to accomplish the taualuga. Netane’s creative wordplay beautiful illustrates song and dance. The detailed and colorful illustrations vividly sketch Samoan culture. This is a culturally rich and exciting story about overcoming obstacles, appreciating culture and family, and never giving up. Younger students will benefit from the lessons shared in the story. Teachers can use this story to introduce song and dance traditions from different cultures around the world, encouraging children to share aspects of their heritage with the class.

Tala is a young Samoan girl who is inspired by watching the older members of her community do Siva, which is a cultural dance. While she learns Siva, she comes to understand that it is not only about the movements, but Siva is about storytelling, showing emotions, and passing on traditions. This book is suited for young readers in about first and second grade. This book would make a great addition to a classroom library because it teaches about Samoan culture and how dance in different cultures have different meanings. Key themes and topics of this book include Samoan culture, Polynesia, Siva, dance, pride, identity, expression, and family.

This book is such a treat in so many ways! My kids and I learned so much about Sāmoan culture, and found much in common with our own culture (South Asian Indian). In our community too, aunties (masis) play a big role, and my friends view my kids as their nieces and nephews and I'm lucky to be a masi (aunty) to their kids!

Not only do we learn about courage and perseverance and how to draw strength from our ancestors, we also have fun while we do it! My kids and I loved trying out the se'e (heels together, toes apart and then toes together, heels apart, back and forth, moving sideways). My kids experienced firsthand, the frustration, and the perseverance, and we even had stuffed toys for an audience (just like in the book!) and my husband and I joined them in the dance and love surrounded us and we danced from the heart :).

The art is stunningly heartwarming and my 3yo daughter likes to sit and marvel at the double spread of Tala dancing from her heart. And I do too!

Beautiful book!

I had the opportunity to read an e-ARC of this beautiful book! Growing up as a dancer, I instantly fell in love with Tala and her desire to learn the taualuga, the dance of her Samoan culture. Stunning and vibrant illustrations flow with the heartfelt text, as Tala is determined to practice the siva “dance” for her grandma’s birthday. Such an inspiring and uplifting story that I know many readers will enjoy as much as I did.

ARC provided by Scholastic but all opinions my own.

"Tala Learns to Siva" by Kealani Netane invites readers into the vibrant world of young Tala, who dreams of mastering the traditional Samoan dance, the Taualuga, much like her beloved Aunty Sina. Tala's journey is marked by frustration as her legs feel too bouncy, her arms too stiff, and she lacks her aunt's natural grace and elegance on the dance floor.

As Tala prepares for a special performance at her Grandma's birthday celebration, Tala doesn’t feel like she is making enough progress. She begins to despair and doubts weigh heavily on her mind. Can she summon the courage and inspiration needed to overcome her doubt and find her own unique rhythm in the dance?

Through Tala's spirited goal of learning the Taualuga, young readers are treated to a warm tale of perseverance, self-confidence, and the power of accepting one's individuality. Tala knows that she isn’t great at dancing but pushes herself to learn and practice with regular enthusiasm. Tala also learns an important lesson in not giving up, and not letting self-doubt mar her journey into becoming a beautiful dancer like her Aunt.

“Tala Learns to Siva” is filled with vibrant artwork by Dung Ho which includes the bright inspections of the flowers and landscapes found in Samoa. But it's not just the visuals that shine— the characters' appropriately diverse skin tones add warmth and authenticity to the story, making Tala's adventures feel even more real and relatable.

With its interesting Samoan cultural backdrop and adorable main character, "Tala Learns to Siva" promises to interest readers of all ages, leaving them inspired to learn more about the Samoan culture and dance traditions.

Tala watched as her Auntie Sina and her older relatives performed a dance in front of her family. Tala was in awe of the way her Auntie Sina danced and thought she looked very beautiful. Tala wanted to learn the dance too and soon her Auntie Sina began to help her practice. She practiced a lot but did not seem to get the movements right and she became frustrated. Her auntie encouraged Tala and told her that she needed to practice more. She also explained that when she began to dance, she also didn't get the movements right and that the more she practiced, the better she got. Auntie Sina also explained to Tala the meaning behind the dance and how it honored their ancestors. She told Tala that if she danced from her heart, her ancestors would fill her soul and carry her. This helped Tala understand the meaning of the dance and she felt connected with her family's culture. I love how Tala remained persistent in learning about her family's tradition. She continued to practice even though she was very frustrated. Her Auntie Sina encouraged her and reminded her of who she is. Embracing her family's culture helped Tala become a better dancer. This story inspires children to understand their family's culture and it gives them confidence to achieve difficult tasks. I also like the reminder of practicing that Auntie Sina gives Tala. She shares with Tala her experience with learning the dance. In the beginning, she also struggled just like Tala did. The more she practiced, the better she got.

Tala Learns to Siva is a beautiful book. I loved learning about the taualuga, a traditional Samoan dance. I also love how this story encourages perseverance — if readers want to become good at something it takes practice, determination, positivity and courage (I love how Tala practices in front of her audience of stuffed animals!). I also love how Tala’s aunt tells her the meaning behind the Siva and how it helps tell their ancestors story. Armed with this knowledge, Tala feels more of a connection to her family/the dance and when she dances from her heart, is able to truly shine. The illustrations are beautiful and inviting and you feel like you are there with Tala and her family. The author shares her personal connection to the story (author’s note) and incorporates a glossary of terms. Tala Learns to Siva is an educational and inspiring story that is sure to capture readers hearts. I highly recommend it!

"Tala Learns to Siva" follows a little girl named Tala. Tala wants to learn a traditional Samoan dance called Siva. She watches her family prepare for their ceremony and she is excited to finally participate. She knows and understands the importance of learning the Siva. Tala becomes frustrated with herself because she is uncoordinated while learning the dance. Tala just wants to do a good job and show that she understands her heritage and its importance. I really enjoyed this book and was moved by Tala's determination and understanding of her culture. The illustrations are rich and truly captures the Samoan culture essence. I would read this book to second graders as I believe they would understand the importance of learning their heritage.

Tala aspires to learn the siva dance like her aunt, but she soon discovers that it is more challenging than she anticipated. After her first attempt, she wobbles and falls, worrying that she may never master it. Determined, Tala practices at school, while shopping, and in her room. Through conversations with her aunt, she learns that their dance honors their ancestors and culture. Eventually, she agrees to perform at her grandmother's birthday celebration and begins to understand the deep connection to her heritage. This beautifully crafted cultural story includes a glossary and an author’s note, which would benefit from including pronunciation assistance for those unfamiliar with the language.

This story explores a young girl Tala admiring the beauty of her and her aunt's culture by watching her aunt dance and wanting to learn how to dance like she does. Tala and her aunt practiced and practiced. Tala felt a little uncapable at times, but her aunt told her to dance with her heart. And as she went and danced with her heart, she was able to dance all over whether it was in front of family, outside, or at a local park. This book will be a staple in my classroom library as; students will be able to see all the different cultures and appreciate them. As well having that reminder of not giving up when something is hard. This story also shows with encouragement from loved ones, confidence levels rise.

Tala Learns to Siva is such a beautiful and lovely homage to Samoan culture and the ancestors. Its gorgeous images bring readers right into this intergenerational story of a little girl learning how to siva, or dance. Inspired by her auntie, she not only learns the moves, but also learns about the significance for the ancestory. I enjoyed learning new words in Samoan and about the significance of this traditional dance within the culture. This book is great for anyone who loves learning about differently cultures and also for those in the diaspora to see such wonderful representation. Beautiful book inside and out!

An absolutely beautiful and delightful read about a young man character by the name of Tala who learns the traditional Somoan dance taualuga. This was beyond an enjoyable read. It was a beautiful and informative. My daughter and I ended up watching videos of people performing the taualuga and she was so amazed and asked a wealth of questions I couldn't even answer. We need more books like these to dominate the publishing industry where children are either able to see themselves or gain insight to a cultural practice that they may not be familiar with. If you haven't given this one a try, definitely check it out.

I read an advanced copy of Tala Learns to Siva and am glad I did. This story is an inspiring and informative book about a special family tradition. Tala wants to learn how to siva and her aunt teaches her—only it’s not quite as easy as she thinks it will be. Tala stumbles and struggles, but with the encouragement of her family, she doesn’t give up. The descriptive language and colorful illustrations are beautiful on so many levels and left me wanting to learn this special dance, too. Tala learns to Siva is a great read for anyone, young or old

Tala sees her aunt do a traditional dance called a taualuga which is a siva (dance) in Samoa and she decides she wants to be a talented dancer like her and asks her aunt to show her how. She puts on the traditional outfit, she sets out to practice but realizes she's not very good at it. But her aunt tells her everyone isn't good at the beginning. That it will take time to learn and develop when they use it for their celebrations.

Wonderfully celebratory and full of vibrant colors and the richness of the setting, it's a lovely tribute to Samoan culture.

This beautiful new childrenʻs picture book tells the story of little Tala who learns to dance the traditional Samoan siva of her people. The story teaches in a gentle and approachable way that children can succeed in whatever they want to do with practice and persistence, and encouragement. The illustrations are vivid and engaging, inviting young readers to join Tala as she puts her heart into her dance. There are so few authentic books written by Polynesians and in the Polynesian world view. For so many reasons, Tala Learns to Siva deserves a spot on every childʻs bookshelf.

This story is so precious. Tala wants to siva (dance) like her Aunty Sina and so she practices and learns a dance for her grandmother’s birthday. It’s a celebration of the Samoan values of dance, family, honoring those who have come before us, and of the beautiful love for Samoan traditions 🌺 My cousin danced a Taualuga for her high school graduation and it was so beautiful 🥹 The illustrations are even more beautiful in person 🤩 The vibrant colors of the puletasis (I want to make Sina’s orange dress, it’s so pretty!), the rich skin tones, the plumeria, torch ginger, hibiscus, and tiare flowers all bring me right back to my time in Tutuila 🇦🇸 visiting family in 2017 🫶🏼

Fa'afetai to Kealani and Scholastic for publishing a beautiful picture book that shares the beauty of Samoa with families around the world!

3.5 This is a sweet and vibrantly colorful book about a child who is inspired by her aunt and wants to learn a dance that is important to her culture. The story is rather light. I appreciated that the central relationship is between niece and aunt. I think there’s a lot that’s not being explained about what’s behind this dance —maybe it’s assumed that a child can’t understand? I wondered about the connection between Samoa and Hawaii; it would have been helpful for me to learn more about this in the end notes. All-in-all. a good introduction. I’m sure children will enjoy it.

This is such a beautiful book about culture, tradition, and honoring your ancestors, but it's also about perseverance, believing in yourself, and finding strength and support through your family and community. With vibrant illustrations and relatable struggles, you'll feel like you're right there on Tala's journey to learn the dance of her Samoan ancestors. I could almost hear the music to accompany the ebb and flow of this perfectly choreographed story.

The vivid illustrations coupled with the authors beautiful lyrical style make each page a joy to read. And the ending brought home the importance of embracing family connections and culture. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a great story for a kinder garden class and some of the children might relate this story to Moana. The story is about a pacific islanders and this one little girl who is starting to learn about how to dance and they also explain the jobs on the island when Tala learns the dance. This book teaches about the culture of the island and the people who take care of the island. This book explains the cultures why Tala wants to learn the dance and more about her culture.

This is an excellent read for the ages four to eight. The themes are self confidence and cultural identity. I picked this book because my students would be able to learn about the Samoan cultural. This book includes dances and fun engaging with education. I would have this in my classroom because it can turn into a fun dance party once we finish reading the book and learning some of their cultural dances through reading.

My daughter and I loved this book about finding your own rhythm and the strength from inside that makes you shine. A beautiful Samoan representation of an aunt and niece relationship, which I appreciated with all my heart because we do not have many in the children's literature world. Dance from your heart, don't give up, and keep trying!

Tala admires her Aunty Sina's beautiful siva (dance) and asks to learn. But she becomes discouraged when she finds she's not as graceful as her aunt. Aunty Sina assures Tala that grace comes with practice. So Tala practices whenever she can. When Aunty Sina asks Tala to siva for her grandmother's birthday celebration, Tala is nervous but remembers to focus on her ancestors.

A beautiful book.

Tala wants to dance the taualuga as gracefully as her aunt and others. She is learning but gets discouraged as she doesn't glow when dancing. When she dances for her grandmother, she realizes what her aunt has been saying and brings the story of their ancestors to life. The illustrations capture the energy and beauty of the dance. A glossary is included at the end so readers can learn more.

So proud of Samoan/Hawaiian children's author Kealani for this remarkable achievement of hers. I think this book is the first children's book published by a major American publisher that feature Samoan characters.
.
Nothing but praise for Ms.Netane. Now I hear that she has another children's book coming next year. So proud of her for that as well. Looking forward to collecting upcoming releases from her that feature Pacific Islander characters and storylines.
.
I want to follow in her footsteps so much! Congratulations Kealani! Malo lava!

I love how much practice of the dance there is in this -- in little pieces throughout the day and more completely (for an audience of stuffed animals, which is very relatable). And finding the connection to the dance and family that makes it all click at the end is really nice!
