A Hondo and Magnolia Mystery #2

All the Bones They Left Behind

Rate this book
Three years after the events in Brooks County, a cold case pulls Sheriff Hondo Velazquez back to San Antonio and back into memories of his childhood as an orphan. He can't let it go. As the investigation takes Hondo deeper into the past, his new wife, Magnolia Moss, pulls him into their future with talks of adoption.

Nights spent investigating the decades-old deaths of children and days spent interviewing at adoption agencies takes a toll on Hondo as the case turns hard. A present-day killer is on the loose, seemingly connected to the past orphanage killings.

Someone is out for revenge against the adults who harmed him. A boy. A survivor. But also a killer.

As detectives begin to piece the case together, they realize there's only one man who can stop the vigilante, someone who survived the same past, the same history of violence: Hondo. As he and Magnolia struggle to maintain control over their own lives, they're faced with an unimaginable decision that threatens to unravel the thread of the life they've created together.

I couldn't wait for this sequel to the debut novel in the ALL THE BONES series. I was worried it wouldn't hold up the sheer mastery that the first book was. It set a VERY high bar... and boy was I shocked that this book CLEARED IT!

This is an author to watch, indeed! His profiles say he is a Hollywood screenwriter and I really can see a cinematic vision in his writing. You can really SEE everything. And it flows like a movie would.

In this book, ALL THE BONES THEY LEFT BEHIND, we catch up with Hondo and Magnolia as they prepare for a long-awaited vacation just three years after the events that took place in the first book. But their first stop as they start their time-off is to interview at an adoption agency in San Antonio (where Hondo grew up as an orphan). The meeting doesn't go as they hoped and then Hondo gets a call from detectives in a nearby town north of San Antonio, in the Hill Country of Texas.

Bones have been found in floodwaters at a local orphanage... the same one Hondo grew up in (and which we will learn was responsible for his and many other peoples' traumas).

Thus begins an investigation that shines a spotlight on the much overlooked crisis of orphaned children in our country. One that illuminates Hondo's past while also bringing to light that people are more than the tragedies and traumas they have suffered and that we all choose who we become.

I can honestly say these are two of the best first novels I've ever read. I know in my heart this author will go on to greatness. And I'm so happy to read these wonderful books already.

Cannot WAIT for the third book in the ALL THE BONES series!

Sometimes dark but rewarding

Barker doesn't write superhero books. I love Reacher, Horvath, Rapp, Longmire, & their kin, but Hondo is just as well written and ultimately compelling. Maybe rhere's a little Steinhaeur here, but Hondo is a way more rewarding anti-hero of so

I am hooked!

When I started reading the first book of the series, I wasn’t sure if it would work for me. Kept going and I throughly enjoyed it. A bit dark and slowly drew me in. As I said, I’m hooked now. Onto the next book.

Beautiful Story filled with mystery and thrills

I thoroughly enjoyed ALL THE BONES THEY LEFT BEHIND. It is well written and a great read. This would make an excellent movie or even a television show. The characters are well designed and each one adds to the story.

Top notch read.

I had an issue with the beginning of the book. Wasn't quite feeling it, but turned out to be very good. I'll continue to read the series with enthusiasm. I'm hooked.

Great Characters

Enjoyable read. Enough plot twists to keep one totally engaged. The characters are different, enigmatic, and likable. I'll read subsequent adventures of Hondo and Magnolia.

I am thinking I read a series before this one! They (Hondo and Maggie) weren’t married though! I enjoyed this story very much! Love the characters and the plot! I love strong, quiet cowboys! Hehe!💕📖💕
