DNF at 19%. It’s boring and the MC h is so devoid of common sense and knowledge it’s just painful to read.

2, I’ve been scraping the bottom of the barrel to try to find a decent isekai/portal/villainess book I haven’t already read and this was what came up, stars.

This is the first book I've read by this author.

I didn't know what to expect when reading this book. Juliette Contzen, 3rd princess in line to the throne is accustomed to luxury. To her orchard, her romance books, and her starlight sword. When her parents tell her that the kingdom is broke, she decides to take action.

The only problem is that she has no skills. Just a nice shiny sword. She doesn't start off as an SS+ ranked adventurer (whatever that is). She's not an adventurer at all, just a royal princess trying to do the best she can (unless that means walking in mud).

The book for me falls into cozy mysteries. Instead of an old lady drinking tea we have a young girl bumbling her way through various mysteries and somehow solving them. The fields are blighted in the lowlands? Let's go. There are bandits in the forest? Let's check that out as well. She's the girl without a plan getting things done with sheer Moxy and luck.

The editing is fine. The problem I had is that there just isn't enough meat on the bones of the story. I'm giving this 4/5* and I'm still not sure if I'll read book two or not.

This was a really fun and fast book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their unique charm. This book has vibes that seem to be heavily influenced by common fantasy anime tropes which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am excited to see how our princess adventurer grows as the series progresses.

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good villainess story or enjoys fantasy anime.

Content: No romance or sexual content.

I needed a book that didn't need too much brain power to read. This one was perfect in that sense. It was also funny. I will be reading more of these.

First book I've read by this author.

The main character is the kind that I'd probably normally not be able to stand. But something clicked and I enjoyed their antics. I can easily see how everything about this book could annoy someone though. The main character, Princess Juliette Contzen, 3rd princess in the kingdom and, if I recall correctly, fifth in the succession line (the third princess thing gets repeated a lot, I think the place in succession was only mentioned once or thrice) is incredibly naive, very pro-kingdoms (as in very rule by kings/queens), very ... well, stuff.

Juliette is the fifth child of the current king and queen, and, as such . . . they are an 'extra' so to speak. Her older siblings have been trained to take over, and are working directly on highly important kingdom related things, and stuff. So Juliette spends her days resting in gardens, reading, and keeping herself dry from rain drops by using her sword to redirect the water (that last part is important to mention for reasons).

Near the beginning of the book Juliette's parents let her know that they are bankrupt and Juliette needs to marry. Learning that the kingdom is facing many issues, Juliette decides to step up and do her duty. Which isn't to marry some rich dude but instead to go out into the world and fix things. She has no plan, just . . . go out there and fix things. And that's how the book proceeds. Someone very self righteous, with the need to fix things, and without any plans.

Truth be told, anyone else following this path, being the main character, would probably . . . well, depends on the genre but probably bruised, bloodied, and, well, dead within moments of starting on her adventure (she does literally start her adventure by going out her window, climbing down a tree, and almost landing on top of two thugs, one of whom sees her as easy-pickings, someone to get some extra money from by kidnapping and/or ransoming, and, so...).

bah, I'm not conveying any of this correctly. I should just go with 'book good. me like. want to read next book in series' and leave it at that. Though two things I wanted to note: book cover & book title.

Book cover looks like something you'd see on a graphic novel, manga, or light novel. This book isn't the first two, and I do not know enough about light novels (other than what their covers look like) to say if this book would fit the light novel definition.

Book title: maybe Juliette will eventually become a villain, but, at the moment, she's bouncing around on a mission to save the kingdom. Mind, being a princess and being a villain appparently have a lot in common, though. Like how she just takes without asking the money at a bar (she's a princess, she forgot to bring money, it's not like she's stealing it, she'll give it back . . . or something). And later robs bandits. But, really, she wasn't robbing them, she was taking it because they hadn't paid their taxes. So, no, she's not a Villainess, she's a Princess! Who laughs like a villain! Who even tells people to stop talking for a moment because she's laughing in her head! And, while she did have some random adventurer attempt to 'rank' her sword ability at the start of the book, she doesn't stick around to find out what her rank was; and adventurer? Pfft, those bums? She spits on them. Or something. Basically, what I'm saying is that the book title appears to be a series title, and reflects more what Juliette might become (or will become), not who she is at the start or during the first book. Though her ability with a sword at the start of the book . . ..

Oh, right, I was going to mention that. Juliette is the kind that would drive, and does drive teachers to retirement. She likes reading, but what she reads isn't something a teacher gave her or would give her, no, she prefers reading 'trashy novels' (so that she'd be the princess who is 'up' on 'commoner culture'). She's the type to put in the appearance of being prim and proper while doing and being something else (as, for example, she knows she isn't supposed to be going around climbing trees, so she doesn't (but really, she does) (there's a lot of that in this book, her thinking about things that are what a princess does and should do, and that she wouldn't do something different than that, while also showing how extremely exprienced and good she is at whatever she said princesses don't do - like climb trees)). The kind who who has a sword, because it is her birthright, but hasn't gotten training because she didn't want to get yelled at. Also, because she has a sword, she has taught herself to do stuff with the sword. Expert level stuff. But because she hasn't been trained or had anyone tell her how good or bad she is with the sword, she assumes she's horrible. Like, say, she doesn't want to get wet, or allow her books or food to get wet, she's taught herself to use her sword to deflect rain way from her. And she thinks nothing of being able to keep herself dry during a rainstorm from using a sword.

Right. I've lost the ability to do reviews.

Book good. Me read sequel as soon as possible.

Funny Anti-heroine Engages in Shenanigans

Princess Juliette’s noble quest to maintain the standard of living to which she is accustomed (and also save the country and stuff) is a lot of fun to read, not least because we get to be in her head for most of it and follow her eye-opening thought process through its mystifying contortions to a conclusion that lands almost just left of logical. It’s quite fascinating! And just as fun to read other characters trying (and very, VERY much failing) to follow those same thought processes from the outside.

I’m also very curious about Juliette’s mysterious abilities! Looking forward to seeing where Kaye Ng intends to take that plot thread.

The narrator was amazing, she made the book way better than it might've been without her performance. The writing was also really good, great wit, humor, and a verbose vocab. The problem was that everything hinges on the gag of the mc being blissfully ignorant and oblivious and having everything work out anyways because she's so OP... another reviewer compared it to Bill Murray in the spy who knew too little and that's spot on. the title was also misleading and the plot that everyone assumes will happen would have probably of been better than the aimless one we got.
still, I enjoyed the wit and humor, but got tired of the gag well before the end and can't imagine a dozen books or whatever more of it

Highly Recommend - very funny!

Heroine is wonderfully self centered in this tongue-in-cheek satire of typical Hero/Adventuring books. Juliette is the 3rd ranked princess of the 2nd to last poorest country in her world, and the survivor of no less than 19 assassination attempts by the age of 7 alone. Unlike her more ambitious brother and sisters, she preferred a quiet and lazy lifestyle, until a mystical Blight on the Kingdom threatened the Royal Family with loss of prestige and life itself. She takes to the Road apparently unprepared as an Adventurer in an effort to save her Kingdom and the Tax Revenue - with hilarious results. Can hardly wait for more in the series.

3rd princess Juliette decides she needs to save her kingdom - well, it is either that or contemplate facing *shudder* poverty. No servants? No bubble baths? No filet mignon? Inconceivable!

Book is a one-trick pony, you already get the joke, right? The author does absolutely nail the voice and action of the princess and finds new ways of expressing her combination of privilege and cheerful obliviousness. Entertaining.

However, as someone with overwhelming confidence due to never having tried anything that could result in failure, I was extremely upbeat about my own abilities.

Very silly

Juliette Contzen is the third princess of Tirea. She has no royal duties or responsibilities to tend to. She spends her days napping, eating snacks, and cutting falling raindrops with her sword. When Juliette discovers her country is bankrupt and she is forced into a wedding, she springs into action. Her swordsmanship is amazing, but she doesn’t consider it to be so.

The story is full of misunderstandings. Juliette encounters a Clockwork Doll named Coppelia, who is looking for an overdue library book.

I enjoyed the story, but it wasn’t what I thought it would be.

Ok not what I thought. The MC is neither an SS+ rank or a villainess. In addition I can’t get over how vain and vapid she is through the story. I like that it’s a nice change from the noble cause troupe which is why the story is intriguing. However, as the book goes on it gets harder to read her monologue of how she is above everything she is doing. I mean she literally blacks out while eating stew 🙄 . But the story has very good elements otherwise. Like the things going on in the kingdom, the Casino Girl, the library, etc. For those, I will definitely continue the story to see how everything comes together. Just maybe not right away.

This was rather delightful.

A fun romp with very fun characters. Though I have read many a Villainess story, this is perhaps one of the few where that spirit is truly embodied - while also being rather likeable in spite of that.

My main gripe is that this series is an Amazon exclusive, which I Do Not Like - I support them only under sufferance and in extreme circumstances, as this one was. As such, while this was fun, I do not know if I can truly recommend it.

That, and it seems like while in the style of translated Japanese Light Novels, this is not one of them? A Western author. Which is interesting.

Eh

Honestly, all the props in the world to the author, for putting the time and effort into writing the book. Personally, I can’t stand the main character at all, as her level of intelligence is so abysmal, even Forrest Gump would be aghast at being the smartest person in the room with her. I can’t even tell if she’s actually supposed to be talented with a sword or if she just happens to have some time stop ability as well. So I can definitely say that book 2 won’t be in the works for me.

This reverse-Forrest Gump satire is high quality, unmistakably clever, and funny. If the blurb sounds good to you then you should definitely give it a try.

That being said, it's missing a level of soul that would push it to "great." The unrelenting satire means it's hard to really care at all about any of the characters, and by about 40% we're left wondering if there's a point to anything other than just extended hijinks.

It ends with a hint that there is something more interesting to come, and I'll definitely read the next one, but I'm not really anticipating any change in tone.

Over-the-top

I know that MC's hyperbolic internal monologue is kind of the point, but there's such a thing as overkill. Fully 80% of the text is her absurdly arrogant and naive ramblings. Every time she starts with "Ohoho" you're about to get a full page of aristocratic villainy which just stops being funny after a while.

I like the plot and would love to see her DO some absurd, unintentionally OP things. At least enough action to balance out the never-ending inner thoughts about how amazing she is.

I absolutely adored this book.

All the characters feel very much alive, with their personalities shining through the pages. Julliete, as the main character, has the most unique voice of all.

I also love how the author went for a different direction. Usually, the royal character would be kind, polite and apologetic for their status.

The fact that Julliette brags and has difficulty not outright displaying her rank, money and power, as well as how simply spoiled, rash and naive she can be... it's funny, without being too much.

Will definitely read the next book!

A hilarious read. We follow our completely oblivious and thoroughly self-motivated Princess Juliette as she runs off incognito with a magic sword and far more skill than she realizes to save her kingdom from a variety of threats, all to save the economy and her quality of life - I mean for the good of the people of the kingdom! It balances being funny with a well-paced plot and characters who you can root for. Juliette's POV is perfectly executed as a balance between an airheaded princess and a keen schemer, all in one. Read it!

A fun, satirical adventure.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Don Quixote was a princess with an OP sword and Sancho was a Clockwork Doll? No, you haven’t? Well, that’s alright ‘cause it’s here anyway! This is an entertaining adventure story of a sheltered, but self-assured princess whose obliviousness is often at odds with surprising flashes of shrewdness. And being able to back up your vision with your ‘gardening’ techniques doesn’t hurt either. It can be a bit verbose, but that’s the nature of the beast with this PoV. Definitely entertaining all-in-all.

NO SPOILERS.

The Villainess Juliette is a treat. Needed a different story to offset my current reading taste, so decided to try this soft novel. It had decent humor and good action. Seeing the MC dealing with the realities of the real world, compared to her "normal life" was interesting. And humorous. And a good change of pace. Really fascinating characters encountered. Including the future lady in waiting.

Overall, an entertaining introduction to a new series that requires further reading!

Not what I was expecting

I grabbed this book without reading the description or reviews. I'm glad I did. It was a hilarious fun read. The mc had just the right balance of naivety. Props to the writer for the nice balance. I could see that going horribly wrong if not done right. I think this book should be a 5 star. I just don't normally give them. lf your curious try it out, it make for an enjoyable break.

Couldn't finish...needs a counterbalance character sooner

I really hope you enjoy this book more than I did. I was able to get to48% of this book before I said NOPE!

the main character is fantastically naive to the point of being funny. But with that naivete came an absurd amount of ego and stupidity that wasn't counterbalanced with another character for the entirety of my reading.

Although surprisingly this book might actually make a great anime.

Have fun! And good luck.

Not sure how I feel

This book is very... Nondescript, I don't know if Juliette is a master swordswoman or a complete novice swinging around an enchanted blade that does all the work with a dash of luck for good measure. It's not the end of the world but it's odd to not know if the MC is actually any good.

A fun romp

This isn't some Isekai villainess -turned-heroine. This is just a villainess saving the kingdom so that she can work the citizens to the bone while they pay taxes to support her slothful, luxurious lifestyle. If their lives come out for the better... Well that just means they can live longer to pay more taxes!

Funny and fun farcical romp of an adventure

Humorous and whimsical take on LitRPG with a very endearing anti-heroine who wildly succeeds despite herself along with a sidekick who won’t stop figuratively kicking her in the side. Very enjoyable read. A few minor grammar and spelling irregularities, but pleasingly flowing prose and lots of witty banter.

Juliette is a princess, whose joy is reading and protecting her apple orchard. Then she finds out that her parents and kingdom is broke ! She is determined that she will solve all the wrongs in the kingdom and make it profitable again. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know what she is doing and she is very selfish!

Ugh

Sorry this book drove me nuts. Really only character I could connect to was the clockwork, at least it had some semblance of a mind. It's like naive and stupid got together to create the mc, can't stand her.

Pretty good

I'm definitely not the target demographic for this book. That said, it is a well crafted story. It was quite entertaining. The MC is a bit hard to root for, but I'm assuming that that is part of her character arc.

clever, witty, tongue in cheek

Well written, sneaky humor, kind of creeps up on you a bit. Definitely a different perspective than the usual adventurer stories. I will leave it to you to discover it on your own.
