Head Rock Harbor Books in the small river town of Head Rock Harbor sees its share of drama. Usually, because Jackson Harper’s cat, Rattlesnatches, can’t give up his street cat ways and constantly–though, accidentally–terrorizes customers. However, for all of his trying, even Rattlesnatches can’t stir up enough trouble to make Head Rock Harbor all that interesting. As a river town, Head Rock Harbor has plenty of shopping, eateries, and festivals for all the major holidays for tourists to enjoy. Still, Head Rock Harbor essentially invented small-town living.

So, when Prescott Pemberton–a local artist who made it big in New York City before moving back to Head Rock Harbor–is found dead in the harbor, it’s tragic, but no one suspects foul play. However, when it becomes clear that several people in town might have benefited from his death, questions arise. Was this death by misadventure…or was Prescott murdered?

Jackson’s shop is the center of daily gossip, and he hears plenty of whispers surrounding Prescott’s death. He’s concerned that the citizens of Head Rock Harbor are merely stirring up drama, but he’s also concerned that his best friend, Detective Jeremy Morris, isn’t taking Prescott’s death seriously enough. Jackson’s mother–who owns the local trailer park and Harper’s Bar, Grill, Bait & Tackle–tells him to mind his business.

Jackson has spent his whole life not listening to his mother. So, what else can he do but check into the gossip swirling around town? But with his best friend, the police chief, and the mayor and her husband ignoring any evidence he uncovers, Jackson finds his only ally is Rattlesnatches.

Hopefully, curiosity doesn’t get the cat killed…

You should do better, babe, at your big age / Now keep me from that bullshit (Gemini Slander – Kiana Ledé).

So here’s the thing, me and this book didn’t exactly have what you could call the best first impression. Don't get me wrong, nothing about it was bad bad per se, but it’s important to note that I basically used this book as a sleep aid for the better part of a month and I didn’t even really start reading reading it until the last half or so. Not to be mean, but I kind of glided through the pages on auto pilot for a large portion of the story. So let me start this by asking a question that I’m always asking myself: “Oh great, what's your problem this time, dude?” Well, I know that it's always something with me, but this time around it’s not one big thing, but in fact many tiny itty-bitty little things that added up over time. For one, I didn’t like how our main guy Jackson is apparently twenty seven, but his narrative voice and general demeanor initially gave off the impression that he was, like, fifty or something. Also, I think that calling this book a “cozy mystery” is stretching the limits of the definition of this particular genre a little bit. Sure, it has all the makings of a book that could be described as "cozy," as it features a main character who owns a book store, takes place in a small town where everyone's all like "our house, in the middle of the street," and features a cute cat who's also the best character, but I'd argue that Jackson’s wry, clinical tone and somewhat callous reactions to the gruesome murders going on around him gave Head for Murder more of a procedural Thriller vibe rather than the charming jaunt that the cover and blurb would imply. Like, where’s the empathy? Where is the love? Jackson has the curiosity angle in spades that a mystery novel protagonist should always have, but I think this book could have used a grand heaping helping of humanity to go along with it. Speaking of inappropriate reactions, I’d like to say that this book has a sense of humor, but I didn’t really find it all that funny in the way that it probably wanted me to. Instead of chuckling and chortling along with Jackson’s impressive and cutting wit, I narrowed in on the fact that there are three gay guys in this book… and one of them has the last name “Biggerstaff.” Like, how big are we talking? I’ll need someone to zoomify on that one please. Well, if it’s so~oo big, then I guess we won't need to be zooming in on anything, right? Har har. Maybe I’m just being juvenile, but come on! Did this author go to the James Bond school of naming conventions!?

Anyway, I think I’ve dropped some clever clues (the hints being that I literally said so in the last paragraph) that I did end up coming around to this book and the characters and mystery grew on me like a certain someone's bigger staff. This is one of the main reasons why I try not to “DNF” books if I can help it, because you’d be surprised at how many of my favorite books were the ones where we got off to a rather... rocky start. Heh heh… the book series takes place in a town called Head Rock Harbor heh heh. Moving on though, while I thought that Jackson's narrative voice was incredibly dry at first, I’ve since come to think of Head for Murder’s prose in a more generous light. I'd call it thorough rather than boring. Even to the point where I'd say it's reminiscent of a Stephen King type book. Granted, I’ve only read a couple of his stuff, but hey, isn’t that the most flattering comparison a person could make about a writer? Huh, I guess I can be kind if I try hard enough! Who knew? Anyway, with the combined efforts of this book’s well-rounded characters, genuinely surprising final page twist that makes me want to pick up book two right meow (sorry), and several dedicated pages to how cute Jackson’s cat, Rattlesnatches, is, I’ve got to say that I warmed up to the story considerably over time. Like, we're talking Kalahari levels. So, while there were a bunch of tiny little complaints that annoyed me to no end, there were also an equal amount of good things in this novel to help combat my exhausting predisposition towards endless negativity. Let’s just say that my Inside Out emotions were working overtime over the course of my time with this book. So yeah, I would definitely recommend this bad boy to anybody who asks. Everybody, here my call and please read this bad boy! But then again, I'm not so sure that my recommendation means all that much anymore. Tangentially related, but I love Salt & Vinegar chips. I’m a big fan. But I sometimes wonder my taste in literature has been eroded by all the books that I've convinced myself I loved in much the same way my literal taste buds are all out of whack because of, you know, all the Salt & Vinegar chips I’ve been eating. What I’m saying is that you should take whatever I have to say with a grain of salt… and maybe a dash of vinegar. But yeah, I'll probably be reading this entire series. So it's whatever.

A cozy mystery with beyond regular criminal-level 'oomph', this proved more entertaining than I expected. Written along the lines of other amateur sleuths - Kip O'Connor, Dante O’Donnell, Ellery Page or even better! - Danny Bird, the MC was snarky-funny, quite put-upon and long suffering - instantly likeable to me. Jackson is surrounded by a great supportive cast - not least his prescient pet (giving Abyssinian Mr Puss a run for his money), a Mae-West type bar-owning mother and a best-pal police officer who's neither uptight nor straight-laced (I'm betting a longish romance plot arc coming up here folks). I'm definitely invested enough to get the next book(s).

I have been a fan of mysteries since I read my first Nancy Drew book when I was 10. So when I found out Chase Connor, a favorite author of mine, had a cozy mystery coming out, I jumped at my first chance to read it. Let me just say, whether you're a habitual mystery reader or new to the genre, it's sure to capture and hold your attention from beginning to end.

The story is set in the small town of Head Rock Harbor, Iowa, and revolves around Jackson, a man in his twenties who owns a much-loved bookstore. (He also owns a mischievous cat with the awesome name of Rattlesnatches.) When a murder rocks the peaceful community, Jackson finds himself unexpectedly entangled in the investigation and becomes determined to solve the mystery.

This author is a master storyteller, so I was not surprised at how he expertly wove clues throughout the storyline. I can usually solve a mystery about halfway through, but this one left me scratching my head until the very end. Also, the characters are well-developed, and the pacing is spot on, balancing moments of tension with entertaining (and often quite humorous) exchanges between Jackson and the residents of the small town.

If you love mysteries, you need to read this book. Like me, it will leave you begging for more. Fingers crossed it will become a series. It just has to.

*Disclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

So freaking cozy and cute!!!
I really enjoyed this little mystery, set in the quiet little town. The author did such a great job you could really imagine yourself there, from the iconic locations you’ll expect, from the townsfolk you’d want to run into.

A massive standout was Rattlesnatches, who wasn’t just Jackson’s cat but felt like a fully created character. As a cat owner it was so nice to see the connection between Jackson and his cat. It was just so wholesome.

Another favorite was Deb, more for personal reasons. My mother is also named Deb, and I swear while reading scenes with her, it was like reading pages out of my own life. The dynamic between the two was perfect!

I honestly believe the dynamics with Jackson and the other main characters were done so well. It really was a highlight.

The mystery itself I really enjoyed, but it was the cozy and overall wholesome feel the book gave that gripped me. I felt like it was a book about these characters while a mystery is going on, which is something I really enjoy!

Amazing job! Can’t wait to read the next!

This sounded like a good story, but the execution was poor. The MC gets involved with several of the townsfolk ultimately leading him to then be embroiled in a mystery. I did not like his best friend, who was a police officer, but never actually did any police work. In fact, the MC ends up solving everything and the police sheriff asks him to explain what happened. The mystery itself was kind of boring and the story with the MC's mother seemed unnecessary. I could not help but compare this to the Adrien English series by Josh Lanyon, except this was an extremely poor imitation.

A Page Turner

I started reading the book and found the characters very interesting. Was only going to read half today and finish tomorrow. Couldn't put it down till the end. A must read for mystery lovers with gay characters.

I am a fan of mysteries and this was a nice read. Witty dialogue and a nosy bookstore owner and a surprise on the last page that made me smile.

New author for me!

Let me start by saying that I liked the 2nd half a lot more than I did the 1st half!

Even though the mystery was convoluted and entertaining... it was the "real" mystery that was solved in the last paragraph that had me grinning! BTW: I was suspicious the whole time!!! 🤣

I am thinking that this is like my 2nd or 3rd cozy mystery... and they are slowly growing on me!

The dynamics of each character added to the story, even though I normally prefer my "law enforcement officers" to be of the "intelligent" persuasion, but I guess you can't have it all and they are extremely nice!

Jumping straight into Murder in the Rough! Curious to see how this one flows... I really need the 1st half to catch my attention and keep it, this time!

The police would never ask a civilian to call the family of a dead person to deliver the news! What? And how incompetent are the chief of police and Jeremy? Jackson basically did all the work even though he doesn't know anything about investigations. Also, Jackson at one point spit out a lot of medical knowledge at the end, which he doesn't have, so I don't know how he came about that knowledge.

I liked Jackson well enough, but the other characters were meh. I think Jeremy and Jackson might be end-game in the series, but I didn't like Jeremy.

Attention-grabbing

A fascinating cast of characters in a quaint town. Fires up the intrigue as the mystery gathers steam and hurtles you towards the culprit.  Murdery mystery readers this one's for you. Especially those who have grown up reading Hardy Boys and Agatha Christie novels. Look forward to reading the next in the series.

"My cat, like all other cats, is a psychopath without the work ethic (or ambition) required to commit actual atrocities, such as murder. So, while uniquely dangerous, cats are all mostly harmless."

I read this one a while ago, I can't remember if I liked it or not. I know that I already read the second book.

A cosy mystery with an interesting murder at the heart of it and the usual eccentric cast of supporting characters. I enjoyed the writing but …. the MC is obsessed with his stomach, only has one friend and never discusses his feelings! So basically not very 3 dimensional. Still, nice read!

I swear it’s not you, it’s me. I enjoyed Jackson’s inner dialogue and his relationship with Rattlesnake, because who doesn’t love a cat with their attitude turned up to eleven. There was kind of a mystery, but it just didn’t keep my interest.

This was nice. A little slow, but nice nonetheless.

It definitely gave cozy mystery vibes.

It kind of reminds me of the Adrien English Mysteries by Josh Lanyon... like its second cousin on the poor side of the family. Like, you can see the family resemblance, but that tadow just isn't there. This was still good, though.

That being said, Jeremy is probably the worse detective I have ever come across. And along with his man whore ways, it makes his character not very likeable. Especially if he and Jackson are supposed to end up together. Jackson deserves better than someone who's slept with practically every one in the town.

Talk about community dick.

Also, not once had he done any actual investigation. He was too busy chasing ass, and the killer literally had him wrapped around their finger. Some detective he is.

I'm not a huge cozy mystery fan, but I really enjoyed this series (so far). This first book is the weakest, but it also introduces all the characters, and I liked Jackson quite a bit. He's a little hard to read at first, but Connor pulls this off better than I expected. Despite wishing Jackson (who's the only narrator) would open up more, the slow reveal suited the overall writing style.

I like Jeremy, as well, and their friendship has a great tension to it. The mystery was intriguing and also slowly revealed. I enjoyed the setting too, and I just felt like I was getting to sip a tangy drink with a gentle breeze in the shadow of a tree and the whisper of the river -- it was relaxing and fun and just good. :)

Head Rock Harbor is a small town in east central Iowa has a lot going for it, especially the bookstore and some very quirky townsfolk. Including a reclusive famous artist who turns up dead. Yup, murder. And the bookstore owner is just savvy enough and nosy enough to investigate thoroughly. Neither grim nor erotic, this lighthearted fun cozy is a blast and a nice break from all the procedurals.

It is quite satisfactory as a detection novel which is what Goodreads's 2 stars means. The mystery when unraveled is quite complex and interesting. But plodding along to the end is torturous as the diction was not quite polished as Josh Lanyon's Adrien English series and Old Time Radio series 'Box 13' both of which strikes similarities and definitely have polished diction for the university-educated older generation audience like me.

Ugh. This didn’t know what it wanted to be - the protagonist is sort of bitter and unlikable. The cops are little more than bumbling idiots and the “mystery” is so painfully evident you cannot call it that with a straight face. However, if you want to read in painful detail about everything the protagonist does, this is for you.

Totally enjoyed this mystery. The writing was first rate, and the characters were well developed with good sense of humor and a bit quirky. I started reading it and could not stop until I finished it. Started looking for the next book, only to find I already owned it. Recommend reading.

great read

This was a fantastic tale, the main characters are presented as real people, faults and all. The characters and the story pull you in slowly, the beginning is slow, I’ll warn you, but as the stage is set, and the plot develops, one will appreciate the whole package.

very slow but also very fast

Desperately needed a good editor. It was a slow and tedious read with an extremely easy mystery (I solved it by p.79) BUT if you enjoy reading the words “chuckled” and “head rock harbor” over and over and over again, this might be the book for you
