A Hollywood Ending

Rate this book
When life hands you heartbreak, grab a sexy bodyguard…

America’s sweetheart Courtney Bennett had it all - fame, fortune, and a doting husband in one of Hollywood's most powerful men. But when he trades her in for a younger actress, Courtney's world topples down around her.

With paparazzi on her tail and nowhere to turn, she hides away in a secluded cabin in Colorado with her new (and deliciously hot) bodyguard, Damien Young.

As Courtney strives to rebuild her shattered heart, she finds herself drawn to Damien, the man determined to get her back on her feet again.

But as a man of honor, Damien won't take advantage of a woman in such a vulnerable state, no matter how undeniable their chemistry is.

Author’s Note: A Hollywood Ending is a sizzling, opposites-attract romance. It’s much spicier than a regular Melanie Summers rom-com so you may want to grab a fan (or maybe a glass of cold milk).

2.5 💫

I have the feeling that my last reads are kinda disappointing lol.

When I saw this book and read the blurb I thought this arc would be a solid 5-star but unfortunately, it wasn't. The cover looks like something new and the blurb is really intriguing but the book didn't deliver it.

In my opinion, the plot was overdramatic and some parts of the story were unrealistic. The writing style was good and I can imagine reading other books by this author.

The worst thing in this book was insta lust. Nah honestly why is this shitty trope haunting me everywhere? 😭

Somehow I don't have much to say in this review.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review!

I received an ARC from netgalley in exchange of an honest review. I wanna thank netgalley and the author this copy:

I loved this book so much. The growth these characters went through was just fenomenal. I was expecting one thing and what I got was so much better. Courtney had her life turned upside down and no one on her corner. She had to learn to be stronger, choose better people to have with her and how to stand up on her own. I loved her, she wanted to give up so many times but she didn't. Damien was her biggest supporter, I loved that. He was there for her, always, no matter what. He was a good man and just wanted her to reach her utmost potential. Their love was beautiful. They loved each other equally and so much. Each of them doing what they couls for the other person's happiness. And that's exactly what love is

Bodyguard romances never fail to give me ALL of the feels. If this book was a song, it would be, hands down, Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift, and if that doesn’t convince you to read it, I don’t know what will.

This book has:
•Celebrity romance 🎬: Courtney is a famous actress who is put under the protection of Damian, a former Marine turned bodyguard
•Forced proximity: Courtney is laying low at Damian’s house to avoid the fallout caused by her divorce from her A-list actor husband
•The friends-to-lovers trope!! 💕

Thank you to Netgalley and Indigo Group for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Courtney and Damien's story is all wrapped up and has been sent out for early reviews. I'm excited and scared about this one - my first really spicy book in YEARS. These two characters are definitely made for each other (if I do say so myself). They're both really good people caught up in a scandal that is not of their own making.
Please Note: This book will only be in Kindle Unlimited for 90 days (until November 8th). Then it's going wide (in all the stores) and will be up on a super cool new reading app called Zory (with a choose-your-adventure way to read it).

I found Melanie Summers through her funny, literally LOL, Rom-Coms. In A Hollywood Ending, Melanie takes her fantastic writing skills and turns the spice up several notches.

Courtney's Hollywood career is going up in flames when her Hollywood husband cheats on her and plans to end her career. Courtney's handlers pawn her off on Damien, someone hired to provide her some security. What she gets instead is a life overhaul, a self help retreat so to speak.

This book is all about girl power and I absolutely loved how feminine positive it was. I loved watching Courtney turn from victim into warrior, and that a sexy macho ex military man was her cheerleader.

It's a steamy read, just a few sex scenes, but the doors are open that the heat is sweltering. Grab your ice water and buckle up.

I’ve read a few of this author’s books and this book is most definitely my favorite.

Courtney is a Hollywood actress caught in a scandal with her cheating husband. She is sent by her team to lay low in Colorado with a man who was supposed to be her bodyguard for the night.

Damien Young is the epitome of a stand-up, honest good man. He is an ex-Marine who now works security until he can get his dream of opening Aspen Lake Lodge. He believed in Courtney’s strength to get through her crisis and needed to show her just how strong she was.

This is a super sweet romance. It’s a quick read that I read in a day. I really enjoyed seeing Courtney realize who did and did not have her back and grow stronger. It’s also a steamy romance, so if that’s not your thing you may want to skip it.

Thank you to the author for a gifted copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

thanks netgalley for the arc!

i am a little convinced that i must’ve been reading a completely different book to everyone on here because this book was… not good.

i knew within a few pages that i was unlikely to like this book, given that “Being a ‘tramp’ unlocked roles.” was a genuine line written here, and this theme of internalised misogyny that the main character courtney (and presumably the writer) has continued throughout the book. that said, i valiantly carried on as i am typically a massive fan of hollywood/celebrity romances.

the next concerning point for me was when our leading man, bodyguard damien, was carrying courtney who he had a) never met before and b) was out cold from a worrisome pill and alcohol combo. despite the fact they had never met and she was clearly vulnerable, he was somehow horny enough to have a “visceral” reaction to carrying her while she was completely passed out. this might just be me, but i typically prefer my main characters to not be sex pests to this particular degree.

most of the book was very average, typical insta-lust. the bulk of the book spans around an eight week period where courtney finds out her husband has been cheating, divorces him and is head over heels in love with a stranger. that kind of pacing wouldn’t be my favourite regardless, but with these main characters, it is a miracle i saw it through to the end.

DNF at 16%. I think I am just not the target audience for this book. Enjoyed the first few chapters and my heart broke for Courtney, but things took a turn when she started referring to her husband’s affair partner as a slut (repeatedly) without having any such choice words for the person who actually wronged her. Then Damien is referred to as being swoon worthy because he’s “gun-toting,” and then he calls her a drug user for taking pills intended to stop a panic attack. That’s when I realized this book was not written for me. The writing itself was incredibly well-done, and I was engaged with the story and invested in both MCs until the wheels fell off. If none of the things I mentioned are sticking points for you, I’m sure you’ll love this book.

I loved this book! You could really feel the electricity of the connection between the two characters, and I really enjoyed the setting of isolation in the wilderness as a backdrop for their connection. The storyline was unique and felt fresh. The only thing I would say is that it could have used more exposition - I felt like we got told where the characters were at emotionally at the beginning of the book but didn't get as much of a chance to feel where they were at. But this was resolved relatively quickly and the rest of the book was a very easy read.

Forced proximity is one of my favorite tropes , but this bodyguard famous star trope did not did right for me, this is so far from that gem in the genre that id Method.... insta lust and pivotal change in ones life in 8 weeks is not for me.

The cover, title and description were so intriguing. Unfortunately, the story itself didn’t live up to the expectations. I didn’t find the characters to be likeable and the plot overall was very overdramatic, unrealistic and misogynistic. I really liked the author’s writing style, though. Would definitely read something else from them in the future.

Overall 4/5 I enjoyed the style of writing, and the spicy parts, and it also had me wishing something like that existed IRL and also that I could afford it because it could change my life, but I digress, the point being the premise, the characters, the imagery/description and the cohesiveness and aha moments were great. I even took some screenshots of some phrases I particularly enjoyed and can apply to my own life.

The premise: a tale as old as time in Hollywood- the unknown beauty meets megawatt superstar, they fall in love & become the golden couple, only for him to leave her for a younger model 10+ years into their marriage. The twist: all is not what it ever seemed to be, secrets will be revealed, betrayals will happen, and new beginnings will flourish. (read on for my detailed review)

- Very easy to read and get into the story from the get-go (I finished it in 1 day, 5h actually)
- I love how relatable Courtney is even if she’s a movie star, she’s good-natured and trusting and I feel for her struggles throughout the book.
- Brock (the husband) gives me the creeps which is good character development as I expect it’s precisely what the author wanted to accomplish.
- I know the story is based on Courtney, but I’d like a bit more of Damien’s personality to come out (halfway point this might change). Finished reading the book update: I definitely think a little more detail could’ve been given from his perspective/past/personality but enjoyed his character nonetheless.
- I really like the use of modern stuff such as TikTok and AI in the book, it adds an extra layer to the story to show temporality.
- The premise is intriguing especially when she starts working to become stronger & piece back her life, some of the tidbits are included as details on what the character is actually doing/reading more so than just “reading a book” or “doing the workbook” which I very much enjoyed.
- Chapter 15 hit hard… I related to her saying she isn’t proud of herself for anything in particular
- I like the sexual tension that’s building up in these characters throughout the first half
- I find the barre-ballet-yoga part of one of the chapters hilarious and had me LOL
- Sex scenes were very well written, they weren’t repetitive, explicit but also not as much that they’re crude, which left just enough for the imagination but painted a clear picture of exactly what was happening and I didn’t want to skim over them as I sometimes do if they get too copy paste-like.
- I thought the conflict part needed a bit more attention on the guy’s side, it was very one-sided minus a couple of pages on the best friend knocking some sense into him, and after the reunion, then a very short last couple of paragraphs for the time jump which could’ve also had more content to it
- I enjoyed the epilogue, it definitely matches the title of the book and the story, I would’ve maybe liked a little bit more detail as the ending felt a bit rushed
- Bonus points for a great cover! It’s what attracted me to want to read the book in the first place & I’m sure it’ll do the same for other potential readers.
- And I know this has nothing to do with the content of this book specifically, but I enjoy when a small excerpt of another of the author’s books is added at the end as it gets me hooked into wanting to read it so good call on adding it in there.

Note: Received an ARC for an honest review of the book.

I really hate when a good romance makes me fall in love with the genre again just for my next romance read to be an utter waste. This was bad like really bad. I didn’t think this would be a high brow thought provoking book. I was just looking for a cute romance but this was just boring and God awful. The main leads are supposed to be almost forty years old and they read young, naive, and very immature. This story without the divorce of course would have made WAY more sense with younger characters. The main character, Courtney, did not need a new man in her life, she needed therapy. She was very insecure, had deeply misogynistic ways of thinking, and honestly just pathetic. So she spent almost a decade of her life/marriage not making her own decisions and relying on a man and I’m supposed to believe her jumping into another relationship is the right decision… okay. Damien was just there I guess. I cannot tell you a single detail about him that really sets him apart, his whole personality was being ex military (ew) and that’s it. Also this book was just boring like if you’re going do a celebrity x normal person romance BRING THE FUN! Like where’s them getting caught by paparazzi, sneaking around, the angst of dating someone in the public eye. Most of this book is just Courtney hiding away in Damien’s cabin while getting her divorce with like no actual plot. Like I can barely call this a bodyguard romance because what protecting was this man doing. Everything was rushed, underdeveloped, and I really just wanted this book to be over already.

4.5⭐️

This book restored my will to read contemporary romance 🤭

To start at the beginning I loved that we saw a glimpse of Courtney before Damien and Damien before Courtney because it allowed their growth to be more visible throughout the book. The writing and plot were super enjoyable and nice and fluffy which made this book really easy to read. It gave me huge Netflix rom com vibes too which i love😭

I loved seeing Courtney(fmc) mature from the start of the book she was so sweet and fun I loved her honestly. I also really loved that her journey was not about finding a new man post Broke😒 but about herself. As for Damien(mmc) I also love him although he was kind of pissing me off in the end I couldn’t even be mad because he was so respectful 😭. Like honestly can do no wrong.

While I love rom coms there are certain parts of them that I don’t love such as the 3rd act break up and the see through plots. Yes I knew that Broke was cheating immediately but in a way that made me want to keep reading to see it all play out. Yes this had a third act break up but because their relationship was so fun and Damien is so respectful about it and communicative It really wasn’t bad?🫣 also some points in the beginning about the reasons they weren’t dating made sense but Damien’s moral rule of no dating clients went away so fast Idek why it was introduced because I do think recently being cheated on and filing for divorce would have been enough.

The only issue I had that I can think of at the moment is the overuse of the phrase “lingering kiss” but it was truly a nice little fluffy romcom with a really enjoyable story both inside and outside of the romance. Also the cover 😀.

Considering this is not a typical Melaine Summers book it's still a book you won't be able to put down. Ex marine Damien is now a bodyguard for the rich and famous in Hollywood. Courtney is a totally controlled unloved wife and actress who doesn't believe she deserves anything better. Thrown in the deep end by the people who should be protecting her, she finds herself being manipulated to embarrase herself on TV finding her husband has cheated on her. Medicated unconscious and in unknown surroundings she finds herself trapped with Damien and trying to figure her next move. Can there be a way to save herself and her career. Although this gets steamy in places it adds to the story of will they won't they. I loved how this book draws you in and makes you want the right outcome for Courtney. I love this book and hope maybe we might find out more about some of the other characters in the book. I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC copy and this is my own personal and honest opinion. Thank you Melaine for a super book.

This is a feel good uplifting romance story revolving around Courtney and Damien..

Courtney is a famous Hollywood actor and wife of a powerful actor of Hollywood but when Courtney is ambushed by reality of her getting old as per Hollywood standards and her husband cheating on him, Damien is called for to act as her bodyguard until the time everything is mellowed down.

Courtney feels like loosing control of her life, her team managing her narrative trying to salvage her career but she realises “she” is just their bargaining chip and they would do anything.

Damien is playing to open a boot camp, somewhere people would come to be their best versions and fight with whatever comes their way.

Damien offers her to take the entire course in return of staying at his place and he would help her to take back control.

I loved loved loved the book and how good the slow burn was.

Thank you NetGallery for this book.

Courtney’s situation gives us an almost reality-television style look into some of the most toxic drama the entertainment industry, as wielded by the hands of a narcissist, can provide. I adored Courtney and Damien. As individuals. As a couple. No matter how hard they fought the pull, they were just adorable together. As much as I hated to see the pain she endured, I loved watching Damien lift Courtney back up and encourage her to keep going, keep fighting to recover everything her soon-to-be-ex was trying to take from her. (Her revenge moment is a thing of utter perfection.) I had so much fun getting to know these characters, I’m not really ready to let go of them yet.

I received an ARC through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review, thank you to Indigo Group, Xpresso Book Tours and Melanie Summers for my copy! ⭐️

In A Hollywood Ending, Courtney is an actress who is approaching 40 and dealing with the struggles of aging in the industry. With that weighing on her, she is suddenly faced with the infidelity of her husband trading her in for a younger woman. To escape the chaos, she finds herself hiding out with her new bodyguard, Damien.

Damien is a former marine and is working in security while saving up to make his business dream a reality. He envisions a retreat where he can help people reinvent themselves physically and mentally. With Courtney as his first client, they’ll maintain a professional relationship to both get what they want out of life… right?

This was my first book by Melanie, and I can see myself picking up another one! The plot moves quickly and was easy to get invested in. The characters are also so likable, you care about how their lives turn out and want to keep reading and cheering for them.

Courtney had so many opportunities where she could have given up but instead pushed through and came out stronger on the other side. Damien was the best cheerleader for her and really encouraged her to take charge of her life. He just wants the best for her. 🥹

One thing I had to get used to was switching off character POV in the same chapter. Not sure if it’s her style, but I usually prefer a full chapter told from 1 character’s POV for less back-and-forth. It didn’t take away from the story or make it confusing, that’s just a personal preference! The formatting made it easy to see a break in characters.

The epilogue was a bit too fluffy and unrealistic, but it’s a fun book; it doesn’t have to be 100% what would happen in real life. It was nice to see Courtney get her recognition after fighting so hard to stay afloat.

I finished this in one day and couldn’t put it down! I had to see Courtney and Damien get what they hoped for. It was a fun story, and the fast-pace kept me going. I think readers looking for an encouraging and light story with a little bit of spice will enjoy it. 🩷

Read if you enjoy:
🎬 Opposites attract

🎬 Close proximity

Courtney Bennet is a famous actress struggling with insecurities about getting older in Hollywood and what that means for the future of her career and the roles she chooses. During an interview for her latest film, she is blindsided with proof of her famous actor husband cheating on her with his current, much younger costar. Her team immediately sends her off with bodyguard Damien Young to his remote cabin in the woods to let the commotion of her impending divorce die down in the tabloids. From the moment they meet, they don’t see eye to eye on how to handle Courtney’s situation. Damien is trying to start a business focused on empowerment and wellness, so the two decide that Courtney would be his perfect first client. As the weeks pass, Courtney must work on her confidence, personally and professionally, and try to fight her feelings for the one person left standing by her side.

Unfortunately, this one didn’t work for me. I needed a slower burn between Courtney and Damien. Their initial physical attraction to each other was okay, but I wanted more pining, more awkward moments, more getting to know one another. Their relationship just felt very surface-level. I also wanted more of Courtney finding her voice away from her marriage and career. I did enjoy the setting, both the Hollywood and Colorado woods parts. I also liked the team of people that Courtney eventually had on her side after her divorce. I think they were important figures for her in her life moving forward.

Thank you to Indigo Group, Xpresso Book Tours, NetGalley, and author Melanie Summers for an eARC of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was a fun, light, easy romance novel! I enjoyed the celebrity/Hollywood angle (one of my favs) and while I am not really that much into the bodyguard-trope, this part of the story was executed well.

Courtney and Damien were cute (and hot) together, but at times I did not really believe their romance? It felt all a bit too fast. Yes it was described that one week, three weeks, eight weeks went by, but it would have been great to have that described a bit more. This could have really helped with the build up of their relationship.

Also I would have loved to see more of the legal proceedings, as I was ready with for all The Good Wife moments in taking Brock and the others down.
Especially because quite a lot of attention was giving to the art of war and getting ready for battle when Damien was showing Courtney how to become more independent.

Speaking of, loved how supportive Damien was, but did not love at all how "he took advantage" of Courtney. She just came from a hard, unbalanced, mentally abusive perhaps even, relationship, and them getting together felt a tiny bit wrong. Her being his employer, him being her mentor/teacher/coach, her being mentally/emotionally not ready.
Yes, Damien was a lot better than Brock, but I could enjoy the story more when I ignored that ;)

Loved that they were both in their late thirties!!!!

To me it was out of character for Damien to provide Courtney with weed brownies when he was SO AGAINST drug use. And this is coming from a Dutch person who is very much used to people with a quite relaxed cultural attitude to drugs.

The epilogue was a bit too fluffy for my taste and a bit unbelievable (also, Courtney, honey, please do not thank you man. You did it yourself. Yes, maybe with help, but you gotta put yourself and your own accomplishments first.)

3.5 stars rounded up!

I received an ARC of this book (thanks!) and these are my own opinions.

Hollywood has different rules for men and women: men get better with age while women just get older, often replaced by a younger model.

Courtney is on the precipice of being replaced. Not just by Hollywood, but by her husband as well. Photos of him and a younger woman are leaked to the press, causing Courtney to seek refuge with a bodyguard named Damien. A sweet, tough, muscle-bound bodyguard who sees her as more than a Hollywood star aging out of lead roles.

It was so refreshing to read about a woman in her 40s finding true love! Courtney struggled with her age and image, but she still radiated strength and confidence once Damien started pumping positivity into her life.

Damien's vision of a bootcamp to build a person's self-worth worked well for her situation (and honestly needs to become a reality). I'm glad that he was stern but still considerate rather than a total alphahole. His sensitive side is just what Courtney needed. Without it, I think his training would have broken her down further, possibly to the point of no return.

A Hollywood Ending is my first book by Melanie Summers, but it won't be my last. The relationship between Courtney and Damien built naturally, and you FEEL their increased desire for each other in each situation. I'm a sucker for a Jolly Green Giant with a heart of gold, and he fit that bill perfectly!!

If you love witty banter, strong heroes unafraid of their feelings, and heroines who know their worth, you'll love this book!

Thank you, NetGalley and Melanie Summers, for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to Indigo Group & NetGalley for an ARC of this book, in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was equal parts spicy, as it was sweet, and such a good romance story. As soon as I started the book, it reminded me of Jenn Anniston and Brad Pitts very public divorce.

Courtney just got the shock of her life, after being shown footage of her movie star husband Brock cheating on her, while being filmed for live television. After the initial shock wears off, her team sends her to an undisclosed ranch in Colorado to hide her from the press. The ranch is owned by Damien, a former Marine who is trying to get his new wellness retreat off the ground. As Courtney tries to come to terms with the betrayal she’s faced from her husband and her team, Damien is in her corner to cheer her on. When they decide it’s best for her to continue staying with him until the press dies down, he decides she is going to be his first client. He sets off with the goal of helping Courtney become stronger physically and mentally, and to begin believing in herself. But their chemistry is off the charts and soon there is so much more on the line, than Damien just helping her out. Will they give in to their undeniable chemistry? And if so, will Courtney’s public divorce be solved, so she’s able to move on with her life?

I couldn’t put this story down, and luckily it was a quick read. Damien is just so dreamy, and the ultimate boyfriend. I loved their HEA. If you’re looking for a new steamy romance, where the MMC is smokin hot, this is the one!
