Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is an American playwright, screenwriter, and comic book writer best known for his work for Marvel Comics and for the television series Glee, Big Love, Riverdale, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics.
Aguirre-Sacasa grew up liking comic books, recalling in 2003, "My mom would take us out to the 7-Eleven on River Road during the summer, and we would get Slurpees and buy comics off the spinning rack. I would read them all over and over again, and draw my own pictures and stuff."
He began writing for Marvel Comics, he explained, when "Marvel hired an editor to find new writers, and they hired her from a theatrical agency. So she started calling theaters and asking if they knew any playwrights who might be good for comic books. A couple of different theaters said she should look at me. So she called me, I sent her a couple of my plays and she said 'Great, would you like to pitch on a couple of comic books in the works?'"
His first submissions were "not what [they were] interested in for the character[s]" but eventually he was assigned an 11-page Fantastic Four story, "The True Meaning of...," for the Marvel Holiday Special 2004. He went on to write Fantastic Four stories in Marvel Knights 4, a spinoff of that superhero team's long-running title; and stories for Nightcrawler vol. 3; The Sensational Spider-Man vol. 2; and Dead of Night featuring Man-Thing.
In May 2008 Aguirre-Sacasa returned to the Fantastic Four with a miniseries tie-in to the company-wide "Secret Invasion" storyline concerning a years-long infiltration of Earth by the shape-shifting alien race, the Skrulls, and an Angel Revelations miniseries with artists Barry Kitson and Adam Polina, respectively. He adapted for comics the Stephen King novel The Stand.

In 2013, he created Afterlife with Archie, depicting Archie Andrews in the midst of a zombie apocalypse; the book's success led to Aguirre-Sacasa being named Archie Comics' chief creative officer.

Archie Comics has always been known for their child-friendly comicbooks and digests so it was surprise seeing the publisher veer off into more adult concepts. I was even more surprised to see Francesco Francavilla attached to it. I think the publisher has finally recognized their offerings with comicbook readership skewing towards older readers. Kids just aren't interested in comics anymore with their games and the internet to entertain them.

Reading Afterlife With Archie is a smorgasbord of pop-culture goodness. You have the revered Riverdale cast, drawn by Francavilla in his inimitable pulpy design sense that gives it a feel of the classic Universal monster movies and dialogue by Aguirre-Sacasa that reminded me of neo-modern slasher flicks like the Scream series. It was Dilton and Chuck discussing the relative merits of their favorite horror franchise by Aguirre-Sacasa that nailed it.

Some minor spoilers: the cover revealed that Jughead became a zombie which just screamed awesome. It's morbidly appropriate.

I need to read more of this. It's just so good. I hope Comixology has a sale on this series soon.

It's nearly the end of Horror Week Shallow Buddy Reads, so I perused by Comixology library and came across this...

This is only the first issue, but there's far more to read.

It starts off simply: Hot Dog, Jughead's dog, gets hit by a car, and dies...he ends up getting help from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, to bring him back from the dead...BAD IDEA...He bites Juggy and then we see the downward spiral begin.

I really enjoyed this little start, because I find Archie is usually for about 10yr olds. This was a more realistic, much better drawn, and interesting book. I can't say enough about Francesco Francavilla's artwork. Really good use of muted pallet and basic colours gives the eerie feel it needs.
I also like that Aguirre is writing these familiar people as actual characters, not just boring 1950s versions that never advanced.

PS. I love that the main reason we're here is because of

I'm not sure I'll rush to read the whole series, but this was a cool amuse-bouche!

Forget Riverdale! Why didn't they make a show based on THIS?! It's so much more creepy and interesting. I didn't take to The Walking Dead but this is a zombie apocalypse series I'd actually enjoy. The Sabrina spin-off in the second half of the issue looks promising too.

Wow. This was not what I expected at all. I decided to read some of the newer Archie comics when I watched the show Riverdale, and this was a great first pick. It is an excellent zombie comic, which was surprising, and both the text and the art had a great balance between an homage to the old comics and intriguing new ideas. Can't wait for the next one.

First and foremost I do not understand why Veronica and Betty fight over Archie. Is he heir to some throne? Does he have lots of money? Archie doesn't even look that appealing. I've never read any of the original Archie comics. I remember being a kid, flipping through some of the comics that my great grandparents had at their house. I just remembered being confused on the love triangle. I was kind of worried that the story was going to focus on that but it did not. Spoilers ahead.

Jughead needed to man up when his dog, Hotdog got hit by a car and died. Instead, he ran to Sabrina Spellman, and she did some illegal spell causing some real Pet Cemetery mayhem. I won't give too much away on the plot but this is a zombie story that actually has a good origin and makes sense.

The comic wasn't as creepy as the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina but it wasn't a childish Archie comic either. It was a perfect mix of horror, teen angst, and a sprinkle of comedy. I enjoyed seeing Sabrina's character again. I am not sure if her aunt's are evil in this but in one panel of the comic they look ghoulish. I also like how she is to blame for all of this. She was told not to cast the spell bringing Hotdog back to life but she did so anyway. She was banished for a year to another realm, I wonder what is going to happen when she comes back.

I loved that this paid homage to Night of the Living Dead (1968), Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th. The fact that it was mentioned in the comic made it feel much more realistic. Also enjoying the fact that this is taking place during modern times.

Overall this was a great read, I am waiting for the series to be complete before I continue reading.

After reading the new Sabrina, I thought I’d try this.

Not your mom and dad’s Archie, kids.

Same author as the Sabrinas but different artist, so this has a different feel—but it’s for sure in the same vein. I’ll definitely keep reading!

Fun!

This was super quick read but very fun! I’m definitely liking this series a bit more than the chilling adventures of Sabrina, so I’m excited to continue!

Zombiefied Riverdale

I was fully satisfied with the plot they put together. This could have been totally stupid, but it’s not. Great artwork, good premise, lots of “scary” fun.

Books 1-10.
DONT BRING THINGS BACK FROM THE DEAD!!! How many times must we learn this! Also don’t hit a dog with your car. Leave to die and thus setting off the end of the world. What would you do to save the life of your best friend? Maybe visit your friend who just happens to be a witch and ask her to do something stupid?! School dances are meant to be fun. They are not meant to be where you see your friend/ classmate eat another one! I love zombies and spooky stuff so when I came across this series I was surprised! I didn’t know Archie had “dark creepy” comics. We get some look into the Riverdale gang s lives and spooky town backstory. I am however a little saddened that the final book doesn’t seem to be coming out or we’re gonna be waiting a while for it. The first book was released in 2013 and the tenth one in 2016 so that was five years ago. I need to know how this story ends! Definitely recommend 🧟‍♀️

I enjoyed reading Archie comics as a kid, so I was really looking forward to reading this new zombie Archie comic. The artwork is much more sophisticated (this is the understatement of the year) than the comics I read, and the characters are much more attractive and more realistic looking than the original. What is retained from the old comic: Betty still loves Archie; Reggie is still a jerk, Jughead still has a voracious appetite (for human flesh, now!) and loves his dog; Sabrina is a well-meaning witch; Midge & Moose are still a couple and Veronica is still a spoiled brat, though I found her slightly more sympathetic in this book, as the comics I remember kind of had her stringing Archie along and not genuinely being in love with him. But maybe that's just my faulty memory.

Archie is much more of a tough-guy kind of hero in this book, but I enjoyed it. I think the story would have worked even if it wasn't Archie, but the fact that it brings in these beloved characters makes it charming. There is an actual story here, as Sabrina the Teenage Witch brings Hot Dog back to life because her friend Jughead is so heartbroken by his death. But it's only a half-life, and Hot Dog becomes the first zombie. Sabrina is banished by her aunts, because she was told not to mess with this magic, and now look what's happened.

As the kids in Riverdale alternately turn into or escape from zombies, there are still the normal teen angst stories--Veronica can still be petty even though everyone is fighting for survival. But I have to say, I kind of teared up when Archie's dog sacrificed himself to save Archie's (archiemaster's) life and during the scene when Archie has to beat his zombie dad to death with a baseball bat, featuring zombie beating panels interspersed with panels of Archie and his dad in happier times. The book is cinematic and the artwork is gorgeous. I'm kind of tired of zombies, but I'd like to read the rest of this series because it's so well done and I have such fond memories of Archie comics from my childhood.

I never read the original Archie comics, and I can't say I was super interested in reading these, until I read the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and thought, maybe this could be cool. I also recently watched a documentary at Boston Comic Con called "Archie's Betty" so I felt like I had a pretty good understanding of the basic plot of the Archie comics to go on.

Sabrina appears in the first few pages, when a distraught Jughead shows up on her doorstep with his dead dog. The witches can't resurrect Hot Dog, but then Sabrina sneaks out and attempts a necromancy spell, which leads to a zombie dog and a zombie outbreak, starting at the Riverdale Halloween dance! I loved Betty being a nerd about which Hitchcock character to show up as, and the other two nerds discussing Freddy Kreuger and Michael Myers throughout. Also I have to say that Archie is MUCH more attractive in this comic than from the originals, which helps me to understand why two girls are constantly fighting over him.

Free comic!

At first, this seemed like nothing more than a pretty straightforward urban fantasy zombie tale. Nice art, funny story. And then it ended. Of course, it's just a single issue.

After it ended I worked out that Archie is an existing character. Wikipedia then told me Archie comics have been running since 1941, or similar.

I guess if I had known this when reading, I might have got more out of it. In the end I guess it's fun to see an established character switching genres from one thing to another, but seeing as though I'm still not sure of Archie's normal genre, it's only half fun for me.

Pretty sweet combo!! Modern Archie with zombies?? Brilliant!!

So Jughead's dog dies and he asks Sabrina, the teenage witch, to help. Her creepy aunts say not to resurrect it but dumb girl does it anyways and is punished. Turns out dogs can become zombies too and poor Jughead morphs into Jugdead.

Betty and Veronica are still annoyingly after Archie. bleck! The artwork is pretty wicked in this comic with its simple sketchy stylized portrayals of the classic gang and very selective colors give this comic an eeriness of classic horror.

A marvelous done take on the archie unverse becoming infected with zombies and Jughead (or as he rightly is called Jugdead, becoming their leader. What makes this comic work and not just become a silly gag is that the writers play it totally straight. this is the archie universe(circa 2013) invaded by zombies. Well done all around, these characters are more 3 dimensional than I ever remember them being. However the last time I ever "read" an archei comic was probably 1978 or so.

Good surprisingly brainy (for archie anyway) zombie mayhem.

This was also part of the Humble Bundle, and it seemed like a good Halloween read.

I'm still getting used to reading individual issues because they are so short that it is hard to get a real idea of what is going on and more importantly will I like the story. This first issue is certainly just setting the scene for things to come, but the story looks quite interesting and I'm looking forward to continue reading, although for me it's certainly one of those in-between books.

I read numbers 1 through 5 as a single volume, so what I say here is for all of them.

This should be funny, or controversial, hopefully both. Why would you take an established world and throw zombies in and just have it be a zombie sotry?
Sure, there is some poking fun at Jughead and Veronica in particular, and recasting of Nancy and Ginger and the two rich kids who loathe Riverdale, but I wanted sastire or blowing away ideas of Archie past.
They are such a fast read, though, that I got through it before I ran out of steam.

Imaginative, entertaining, and beautifully drawn. The rivalry between Veronica and Betty was developed in a really interesting way. I'm not usually a fan of symbolism, but the symbolism at the Halloween party was obvious enough that I could understand it and subtle enough that I enjoyed it. The author made an effort to include at least a dozen in-jokes related to long-running Archie characters . . . I'm sure there were many more in-jokes that I didn't catch.

This is a new series, a complete new take on Archie. It’s Archie meets The Walking Dead. What could be better?

It’s the week before Halloween, somebody is running through the woods, they are running fast as they can, carrying something heavy. The wooden steps of the front porch creak as the runner springboards themselves up the steps. BANG! BANG! BANG! Echoed through the house. It’s 3AM and Sabrina wakes up. Her aunts tell her not to open the door, but she does. It’s Jughead on the porch of her house with his dog in his arms. He had been hit by a car and was dead. Unfortunately the dog is beyond help.

But Sabrina has an idea, a forbidden idea. She helps reanimate Hot Dog back from the dead. A few days later, Hot Dog returns home, but unfortunately he isn’t his old self and attacks Jughead. Things go downhill from here. The end of the world has just started.

The writing in this one isn’t quit as good as the Sabrina comics. But it’s early yet. I am going to be reading the first 5 issues of this comic and hope it can get a bit better.

The artistry to me is in the same boat as the writing. It’s good, but not as good as the Sabrina comics. But it’s still excellent.

Surprisingly good

I have to admit that I was a little skeptical of this series. I loved the Archie comics as a kid so much that I even had a Josie and the Pussycats poster on my wall for years. As a wheelchair user, I was really excited about the series introducing a disabled character and I came across this one while searching for the newer Archie issues. I just didn't like the idea of taking a well loved classic and turning it on its ear with another zombie apocalypse type storyline. Much to my surprise, I really like it. Despite being turned into a horror series, it still manages to keep the same campy feel of the original. I can't wait to read the next issue.

Afterlife With Archie #1

I really enjoyed this! Being a hardcore horror fan, as well as a long time fan of Archie comics that I've read since I was around 4 years old (same age I started loving horror movies as well) it was great to see the two loves of mine collide! It was only a matter of time in my opinion, and I'm so glad the idea was explored! Very cool and creepy and yes....heartbreaking! Poor Jughead was truly devastated about Hot Dog... and so was I, being an animal lover! Very well done and gorgeous artwork! I also own the paper versions of this comic series! Absolutely a good read and a good time!

Like A Fun B-Movie with Beloved Characters

I'm loving the way this feels a bit like someone threw Shaun of the Dead, Riverdale, and a few b-movies into a giant pot and stirred it lovingly for several hours. There's a little bit of dark humour, a little bit of angst, a little bit of horror... I think I'm ready to go on this crazy adventure.

Also, I'm kind of loving that Archie is having none of the BS from Veronica and Betty fighting over him. I just wish they weren't doing so, but that's just who they are in the comics so I'm willing to overlook it as comic relief.
