She wasn't for me
Genuine question here, and I ask this as somebody who is usually a fan of Silvia Violet but um... was this good? I don't necessarily mean the relationship between Miles and Ben. That was great. It was possessive, it was hot, I was all for it. But as for everything else...I have questions. And I feel like the answers would have been very simple.
Question number one, what did Montgomery enterprises do? Seriously, I read this entire book and still have no idea what the company does. Normally I wouldn't care but this is a workplace romance. This is a boss/employee romance. So much of this book is them going to meetings and answering emails. Hell, the main plot point is Ben's family trying to steal from Montgomery enterprises! But I have no idea what this company does and therefore what can be stolen. At one point they mention formulations for products but that could literally be anything from skin care to a new flavor of Cheetos. I just, Am I insane? Did I miss something?! I feel like a line about them being a tech firm or snack food conglomerate really wouldn't have been so hard to provide.
Question number two, the thing with Miles and Emily, did that make sense? I understand what happened but I don't understand how that led to Miles swearing off love. Is the mentality that because his friend got her heartbroken he never wants to experience the same thing? Because low key, it sounded like he blames himself for what happened to her and that's why he doesn't think he deserves romance. I'm keeping this vague so it may not make a ton of sense but even if I were to provide full spoilers, it still wouldn't. Emily should have died. It would have been tragic but it also would have made a lot more sense as to why Miles turned into a cold-hearted businessman but still very sl*tty. That's not shaming him, I'm happy for him. And subsequently Ben.
Speaking of the sweet little bunny (honestly he was adorable), question number three is about his family. Why did they want to steal from Montgomery enterprises? Why did they choose Ben to be the one to go undercover? What's the MO, the rivalry? I need some backstory because the little bit we got doesn't count because it's in the blurb.
Overall, the book is fine. The story is simple, tropey (not a bad thing), and I think the average person would be into this, especially if they can overlook the things that I couldn't. Honestly, outside of Miles being growly and possessive over Ben there wasn't too much I liked. But if you like a little toxicity with your fluff, you'll be fine. Three stars because it's a fine book it just didn't work for me and that's okay.
