I’m here for the mountains, castles, and lakes, not the Scottish silver fox
When my long-term boyfriend overcomes his fear of commitment right after our break-up, I decide I need to face my fears, too. I’m terrified of flying, but a guided tour through Scotland sounds like the perfect way to distract myself and recharge.
Hiking, biking, and paddling my way across the Highlands is one thing, but falling for the swoony silver fox I’m traveling with isn’t part of the plan. He’s confident, charming, and his rumbling voice is as breathtaking as the views.
I can’t deny the sizzling connection between us, but my life is five thousand miles away. I need to be realistic. This isn’t love, it’s just all the fresh mountain air overwhelming me.
Trouble is, I’m getting used to the effect.
The Loch Effect is a closed door, later in life rom-com with implied intimacy. Please note this book contains mild language, moderate innuendo, and more than a wee bit of whisky drinking.
Genny Carrick is a sucker for an HEA, especially if there's a whole lot of laughter along the way. She writes romances and rom-coms about stubborn women and the men who fall for them.
When she's not lost in swoony reads, she's probably up to something crafty or trying to get her dog and two cats to love her.
Genny recently moved to Texas from the Pacific Northwest with her brilliant husband and two hilarious kids.
This was my first time reading Genny Carrick and I enjoyed it. I loved that this was set in Scotland, was age-gap romance, and the secondary characters. This was a closed-door romance that had so much culture in it, chemistry between the hero and heroine, and message about believing in yourself.
I didn't know that I needed to read a romance with a Scottish, kilt wearing hero... but after this story, I certainly feel like I need more of just that! Molly and Duncan were such a great pair! Their meet cute was fun, and the chemistry only grew as the story went on. It was a bit of a slow burn... but I enjoyed every single second of it. Molly's frequent mishaps on the trip had me laughing throughout as well. As much as I loved the romance of it all, I also really enjoyed seeing Molly grow in confidence and learning what to prioritize in life throughout the story too. It all blended together beautifully to create a fun story I couldn't help but love. And the Scotland setting? It made it all that much better! I love that stories can take us to places we've never experienced, and every once in a while, make you want to experience that place in real life--- and this was definitely one of those times for me. (Though I'd definitely be skipping the haggis, blood pudding and whiskey!)
The Loch Effect is a closed-door romance. While intimacy is definitely implied, it happens off the pages, with only kisses on page. There was a fair amount of mild language and innuendo as well.
Overall, this was a fantastic read. If you enjoy a vacation romance with a slightly later in life couple (38 and 49), this is definitely one not to be missed!
**I received an ARC for consideration. All opinions are my own.
All of the characters in this story are just perfectly cast and even the annoying ones draw you in. (Oh, I so wanted her to hang up on her boss!)
Molly has decided to overcome her fear of flying and go on a tour of the Scotland Highlands. Her boyfriend of the previous four years has recently overcome his fear of commitment with the new love of his life, and is now engaged to be married. She has signed up for an adventure of hiking, biking and exploring Scotland for 10 days. Starting with the plane ride it's hilarious. She meets the "silver fox" Duncan as she's buying cheezy "heart-y" travel merch in the airport, including "I heart Scotland" keychain, T-shirt and vinyl sticker.
It was such a fun ride, going along on all of their adventures. Oh, this girl just can't NOT end up in an awkward moment that will have you laughing out loud. Duncan's delight in her is so sweet.
I heart'd it.
I was provided with an ARC version of this book in exchange for my honest review, and I am happy to provide that here.
Super cute! I really felt like I was on a tour in the Scottish Highlands and experiencing the sites with Molly and Duncan.
The story is told only from Molly's point of view and it worked perfectly. I loved seeing the way Duncan seemed to be there for Molly whenever she needed him almost from the very beginning. Their connection built so naturally and made this vacation romance feel like something that could really happen.
Molly had an awakening in Scotland. She had to decide if the life she had been living was really the life that she wanted or if there was a better life out there for her. Her journey was not only a physical crossing of the ocean but also a journey of emotional discovery.
“Autopilot’s no way to experience love,” he said. “Love should be wants and needs, hearts and minds coming together in fire and passion until being apart isn’t even an option.”
Traveling to Scotland has always been high on my bucket list, and now it’s even more so after reading this charming book. I loved it!
It’s a travel romance that is funny, swoony, and wonderfully descriptive of the beauty of Scotland. 🏴
What I loved: ⛰️ Age gap ⛰️ Single dad ⛰️ Older main characters (30’s & 40’s) ⛰️ Molly’s self discovery ⛰️ Shatner the dog ⛰️ Secondary characters ⛰️ Descriptions of scenery ⛰️ Molly’s embarrassing moments ⛰️ Sweet romance with fade to black ⛰️ SCOTLAND
As soon as I saw the word, "Loch" in the title, I knew I had to read this book. Considering my obsession with all things UK, this definitely scratched the itch of seeing Scotland. I loved following the path of their travels. I kept pausing to google the next location and see where the characters were visiting.
Characters I enjoyed having real background on all the characters. Even 'side' characters felt like people I knew by the end. While I don't find all the characters likable, that's one way the story feels real. I don't find every person I meet likable, but everyone has redeeming qualities and valuable perspectives--even if they're annoying perspectives.
Plot & Writing While the plot was mostly predictable, there were some interesting curve balls thrown in to get me thinking. The story moved along at a smooth, quick pace. It never felt like it was dragging or lacking enough detail. I always appreciate pretty short paragraphs because it keeps me motivated. When I am picking out a book, I read the synopsis, check paragraph length, and check chapter length. A book with long paragraphs, long chapters, or a boring synopsis, I will never finish.
Personal Connections Since I have been in a long standing trend of reading historical fiction, I started the book nervous to read something present day. The first chapter got me hooked immediately, so that wasn't a problem. One of my current obsessions have been the Outlander books, so it was interesting to hear about some familiar locations from present day.
While I am in a phase of transition in life and have spent the last decade putting work above anything else, her introspection and analysis hit close to home. I wasn't expecting work-life balance to come up in a romance novel, but I enjoyed the reflection. Our romantic lives don't generally happen in a vacuum where nothing else can touch it.
Recommend I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Scotland or UK, travel, romance, or someone who is noticing they work a lot.
This is another great story from this author. I enjoyed it so much. An adorable and fun romance between older characters (although I’d argue that Molly really isn’t “older”) from different sides of the world. I loved going with the tour group to so many beautiful and amazing places throughout the Scottish Highlands, and can only imagine how much research this book required. (I believe the author was lucky enough to do some of that research on location, and the readers are the beneficiaries.) There are some fun and fascinating experiences and the tour group provides plenty of quirky characters to add depth to the narrative. There is great banter between all the characters, but especially between the main characters. Molly, our workaholic American FMC, and Duncan, the burly Scottish silver fox MMC (who looks like an alpha, but is actually a cinnamon roll inside). Molly was very relatable as she faced the reality of where her life was versus what she really wanted. This story is told exclusively from her POV, and that allows the reader to really understand her and how she’s reached this place in her life…and how she changes. “Just good enough wasn’t such a bad thing when the best risked the very real possibility of the worst.” Of course Duncan has her number, “‘I think you like adventure, but you’ve told yourself you need to be more practical.’” I liked how the main characters didn’t act too coy about their feelings for each other, and they were honest about what they wanted. No dreaded big “misunderstanding” here. The epilogue was sweet and cute. I love me a good epilogue to round out a story. And shoutout to Molly being a Trekkie. I heart that. (IYKYK.) This story is fade-to-black, so there is intimacy but the scenes close before it is on the page. There is also infrequent moderate innuendo. The book also contains infrequent mild harsh language.
Romance: 3/5 Chemistry: 4/5 Spice: 0/5 (it's a clean one y'all) 1st kiss: +- 49% in Humor: 3/5 Cry factor: 1/5 Drama: 1/5 Suspense: 0/5 Foul language: 0/5
My thoughts: - This was by far one of the best travel romance I have ever read. I've never been to Scotland, but with this book I was there. The way the author wrote about the places our MC's visited, it was like I was there with them. I saw the landscape, I felt the excitement, I heard the breeze over the Loch. It was brilliant. - Our FMC was funny, hear working, loyal and lovable. She had the most annoying boss, and I was glad she found her worth in the end and made the decision she made. - I absolutely loved the MMC, he was so smitten with her from the beginning and he slowly made his way into her heart. A Silverfox indeed! - I loved that our MC's were of a mature age. Their attitudes, way of thinking and real life struggles were very relatable.
Overall: - This is a closed-door (or fade to black) romance with plenty of chemistry and a good dose of various emotions. You will laugh and want to cry, feel their frustration and want to fight for their relationship to work. - It is a romance where our MC's are traveling in Scotland, so we get lots of castle, Loch and hilly views. Use your imagination or look up the places they visit. It will make an even more enjoyable reading experience. - It is a fast, easy read. There are some tough subjects that were lightly tread on, so I didn't think it was a heavy read. - Single POV - Can be read as a stand-a-lone.
Tropes: - Mature characters - Silverfox - Travel romance - Scotland adventures - Behind- Closed-doors - American FMC - Scotland MMC - Man in a kilt!
The Loch Effect is a sweet closed door romance stand alone story about Molly a web designer from Seattle and her adventure in Scotland on vacation from work, where she meets Duncan. At first I will admit I struggled to get into the characters, however once "in" I was committed to this book. From descriptions of beautiful areas of Scotland to the building relationship between the main characters I found myself rooting for their happy ending. From handling the need to live in the moment and not through your camera lens to the need to take the leap of faith and try things on your own there are excellent life lessons hidden within the pages of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed The Loch Effect and look forward to more stories from Genny Carrick!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and words are my own.
So. Damn. CUTE! I finished this in a day, and simply could NOT put it down until I finished. This is a very PG, feel good romance. People who want 'spice' of the hottest variety and expect drama, this is NOT for you. But if you're wanting a break from the darker side of romance, and want to have that warm glowing feeling give this story a read. The two MCs are so well-written and sweet I wanted to die haha. Love the age gap and the fact that this is a 'later in life' romance. The last one I read (different author), the characters were older but had the mentality of teenagers and it was so off putting. This is a great reflection of what being single in your late thirties is like for women - in my opinion. We never really outgrow our insecurities, but there's always time to try again for the things we want. I will definitely be giving Genny another read!
I can not say enough good things about this Book! Molly and Duncan’s story gave me all the warm fuzzies - it was such a joy to read!
The main characters in this story are older (late thirties and up), but are so fun and relatable that it is easy to enjoy regardless of your age! And all of the side characters? Just wonderful.
This book takes place in Scotland and while it features some popular tourist points, not once did it feel like I was reading a guidebook. The story had a great flow and mixed the hilarious moments with the romantic and sweet perfectly.
Genny Carrick’s writing has me with a constant smile on my face, and there are so many moments that are laugh out loud funny, and I even shed a few tears. This is such a feel good story and I can’t recommend it enough.
An excellent romance novel - and not just the couple. Although Molly and Duncan ticked all the boxes for that! It was also a love letter to Scotland. So many times I read books about my home country which never get all the details right. This was expertly researched - even to the point of all the pesky tourists at the fairy pools on Skye! I loved everything about this book. The banter was hilarious, the travelling companions added to the depth of the story and I couldn’t help but root for Molly and Duncan all the way through. However, possibly a canoe trip on Loch Ness isn’t all it’s hyped up to be 😂 IYKYK Another brilliant book from this author and I’m looking forward to many more.
Hubba hubba! A muscled Scot who is SilverFoxilicious!! What's not to love! Duncan and Molly are perfect from their meet-cute on! Their crazy, silly, embarrassing attempts at flirting somehow works for them. They are too adorbs! I love how klutz-y Molly is; it adds so much to her already precious exuberance! With every stop on their adventure through Scotland, I wanted nothing more than to get on a plane and go straight to Scotland! But no haggis or blood pudding for me, thank you very much, please.
Her banter is gold and the characters are real and relatable.
I loved the travel premise and the Scotland setting. It will give you all kinds of Outlander vibes!
I did have a hard time relating to the characters because they are older. Molly was 38 and Duncan almost 50. I like the idea of a story that isn't about 20-something kids, but it's hard to connect with the characters if you're in such a different place in your life.
Overall, it's sweet, swoons and laugh-out-loud funny.
What a fun book. I loved The Loch Effect. Genny Carrick did a really great job describing Scotland which made it really fun to read and imaging the places they went. The FMC is very relatable. I did get some second hand embarrassment for her but she was also really cool under the scrutiny of some of the other characters. I caught myself smiling and giggling a lot throughout. Loved that the main characters were older than the usual 20 something’s. There is some innuendo and fade to black but still closed door. Highly recommend!
Honestly one of the best books I've read all year! It makes me want to jump on a plane, fly across the pond, and go get lost in Scotland.
Duncan is SilverFoxalicious, and Molly is incredibly endearing. The two of them together are perfection. Genny perfectly captures and balances Molly's real-life struggles with her job, her blossoming romance with Duncan, and the absolute wonder of the Scottish countryside.
Where can I find me my very own Duncan?! This man! He was absolute sweetness with just the right amount of strong alpha male 😉 i loved their every interactions and his protectiveness about Molly. He encouraged her to try new things and to overcome her fears. That's what a relationship is supossed to be. Bring on the slightly older men, they may surprise you!!
I love a travel setting in a book on any given day. I soooo want to go to Scotland now, though I’m not sure my boyfriend would be willing to wear a kilt 🤔
I enjoyed the cast of characters. There were more interactions with side characters than you typically see in a romance novel, which was fun! I liked the plot with Molly’s job and work-life balance as well
This rom-com had me laughing out loud and suffering from secondhand embarrassment ... I mean the things that happened ... don't mind me cackling here. Either way, this was a super fun read and while it was mostly lighthearted it did also poke at me to get back to my own dreams and not feel so stuck.
I really enjoyed reading this sweet happily ever after story. The meet-cute was fun and made me smile. There is great humor and banter throughout the story. I loved Molly and Duncan, he is the sweetest cinnamon roll guy. Their vacation to Scotland was described so well it makes me want to go. Fantastic book that I highly recommend.
I heart sweet Molly, I heart irresistible Duncan... but most of all I heart this lovely story!! It's full of love and charm, joy and fun.. It stirred my Scottish soul and pulled me directly into their romantic adventure. I'll never forget Molly's tears, and Duncan's kisses...
I read The Lock Effect as an ARC and couldn’t put it down. It was so great, in fact, that I fit reading it into week-before-my-daughter’s wedding prep. Travel romances are my jam, and I love maps. I end up paging through the story a second time after I’ve read it and track the character’s travels on the map. I loved it all; the descriptions of the places they visited (Scotland has been on my list for decades), the character development, the slowly growing romance, and Molly’s growth in her self-awareness and strength of character. I have now read all of Genny Carrick’s books and very much look forward to the next one.
A great read. This book had me smiling, chuckling, and wishing I could visit Scotland. It has some implied intimacy, but not any worse than tv shows these days. If you don't mind that, I highly recommend this read.
What I wouldn't give for a vacation like Molly's with a Scotsman like Duncan! The descriptions of both Scotland and their romance were perfect. The other characters and events on the adventure were so entertaining. I loved the ending!
This was masterfully written. I adored the two leads as well as all the characters on the tour with Molly. Neverending witty banter and a whole heaping serving of heat without the spice. I'm here for it!
This was cute. I didn’t think I would like it—I don’t know why—but I did. The main characters and their romance was cute, but it was the side characters that sold it. It gave small-town-quirkiness without a town actually being involved.
Loved everything about Molly, her Scottish adventure and man! Had me chuckling and laughing several times. Made me feel like O bc was journeying in Scotland with her.
