Apart from the wonderful flashback case, the rest of them are somewhat forgettable. What makes the flashback so enjoyable isn't the mystery, it's the characters. Most of the parents only appear once in a blue moon which makes their moments that much more special. Shinichi and Ran also get some character dynamic building, and it's nice to see Shinichi rather than Conan every now and then. The book's good, but when you know a series can be amazing, good can feel like a little let down.

I enjoy this series. This volume has a mystery featuring Jimmy (Conan before he was zapped). The best story involves Conan though searching for his missing friend Mitch.

The only thing I don't like is that the last chapter is the start for the next volume. I don't have the whole series, so I may never finish that story.

Golden Apple!

1st case: flashback to a trip to New York. Shinichi and Ran visit Shinichis mother and go see a play. Suddenly the lead actor is killed on stage. All the women in the play had relations with him and could be a suspect. Furthermore there is a mysterious serial killer on the loose in New York.
2nd case: A ghost keeps showing up in a house. Most of the tenants moved out. There are s few remaining. Could all of this be connected to a murder across the street from 4 years ag?
3rd case: Mitsuhiko vanishes and noone knows where he went. The detective boys and Profesor Agasa look for him. He seems to be outside of Tokio in Gunma. A serial killer seems to be close by as well.
4th case: A detective competition is set between Heiji and Kogoro. There is a mysterious island with a dying message. When everyone goes to check out the venue somebody ele is found dead.

This story continues with the flashback from the previous volume of Case Closed. This might be the worst split of a story as you might not even know that this is a flashback at the start of the story. The flashback to me takes entirely too much of the volume, which is probably why it was split into volume 34 and 35…but I felt it just was too long. This flashback takes the team to NYC for a murder. The next story has to do with a haunted building and this puts Rachel, Richard Moore and Detective Conan on red alert. Detective Conan is on the case to figure out a murder which occurred 4 years ago. I found the art in this particular one to be very well done (the grime and the mystic) but the story did not hold me with baited breathe. Next the adventures go to the Junior Detectives and a race against time within the woodsy forest when one of their own is missing. The final story of the book involves the beach, Harley and Detective Conan. This is a cliff-hanger story and so you will need to wait for the next volume of Case Closed in order to receive a satisfying conclusion.

Returning to the second murder case Jimmy ever solved, Rachel recalls an important moment (and an important face) from her past that she had forgotten about. Set in New York City, the two accompany Jimmy's mom, Vivian Kudo, to a Broadway play that features a bloody finale. Following the main case of the volume is an investigation involving a haunted apartment complex (and an old cold case involving a murdered woman) and a mystery centered around the Junior Detective League. The final case is a team-up between Harley and Conan to uncover a beach island mystery that's been scaring away the tourists.

This is the second time that Ran sleeping has been used as a device to have a flashback. It was okay the first time, but I'm not a fan of it being used a second time, and I really hope that it doesn't happen again. That said, the flashback case was okay, even though there are some details that feel a bit wonky in terms of logic. The ghost case was just plain weird, and so was the third case where the kid ran off without telling anyone anything. I think there's potential in the last case on the Island, but I'm kind of prepared for it to also be a dud.

Wrap up pre-story flashback, ghost themed side mystery, Detective Boys investigate where Mitsuhiko is disappearing to, and ends with a new mystery in Okinawa with Heiji.

No major developments but one dropped detail about one character and a vauge comment to develop mystic for another. The flashback overall was good and the Detective Boys story was adorable.

Ran's flashback to the New York adventure, in which Shuichi Akai appears for the first time, ends. Later chapters tell stories without murders, thankfully. Nice is the one where Mitsuiko ventures into the forest alone to look for small things.

Aoyama Gosho; DETECTIVE CONAN [Meitantei Conan #35]

e/read online; genre: { manga, mystery, shounen }; shelves: |comics, GN, manga, manhua, manhwa|

General Synopsis:
As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻

V.35, includes Files 351 - 361

DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.

Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.

Characters in this volume:

Personal Opinion:
#1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.

#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!

Theatrical murders, serial killers and a haunted apartment building all take center stage in "Case Closed Volume 35." This mystery manga series is still chugging away doggedly, but this particular volume has some big road bumps -- especially since one of the mysteries has a painfully anticlimactic, rushed ending.

Rachel's fever dream takes her back to a past case that Jimmy solved in New York -- an actor in a popular stage show was murdered ONSTAGE, and all four of the suspects were his lovers. And even after Jimmy unraveled the truth, Rachel had a shocking encounter with a murderer.

Then Richard is called to deal with an apartment building said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl murdered nearby. Of course, Conan knows that the only one haunting this place is her murderer. And when Mitch wanders off into the woods on a mysterious errand, Conan and his friends go off to find him... only to find that a serial killer is loose in the woods.

Finally, Harley, Conan and their respective love interests get to spend some quality time on a tropical beach, where the boys mostly laze around predicting what bathing suits girls are wearing. But of course, a body turns up soon.

"Case Closed" is a series that mostly runs along on a steady, entertaining stream, with the occasional high or low thrown in. "Case Closed Volume 35" contains one of the lows, sadly -- the whole story about searching for Mitch in the woods has a solid start, a creepy buildup... and an ending that just makes you slap your head and go, "What was all the fuss about?"

Fortunately, the other stories are pretty solid, standard "Case Closed" fare -- clever tricks used by the murderers, deceptions, plenty of motives, and a story that is cut off at a cliffhanger at the end so readers will scrabble for the next book. And some clues are dropped about one of the mysterious figures we've seen in passing, albeit looking a bit different.

We also get to see Jimmy doing his brilliant detective schtick back before he became Conan, and it's kind of nice to see him openly revealing the clues without having to hide behind someone else. And Anita seems to be gradually loosening up and becoming more normal... much to her horror.

"Case Closed Volume 35" has one story that flames out and burns like a lump of pizza cheese on the bottom of the oven, but fortunately the other stories are pretty solid fare. And as usual, it leaves you wanting what's next.

BROADWAY TERROR: THE GOLDEN APPLE MURDER
Shinichi and Ran arrive in New York with Yukiko, only to find themselves entangled in a chilling mystery at a Broadway theater. A cryptic threat, a near-fatal accident with a suit of armor, and a shocking murder during the climax of The Golden Apple musical leave the audience in fear. With the police suspecting an unknown shooter, Shinichi unravels the deception—exposing a staged crime scene and revealing that the killer is among the four actresses, each harboring a past with the victim.

THE HAUNTED APARTMENT: A GHOSTLY WARNING
A simple visit to the doctor turns into a supernatural nightmare when Ran, Kogoro, and Conan hear whispers of a haunted apartment. A spirit of a girl burned alive four years ago allegedly lingers, terrorizing the residents. What begins as curiosity turns into terror when Ran wakes up to a ghostly message on the television, and eerie occurrences escalate—blood-red water and an apparition outside the window. Is this truly the work of the supernatural, or is something far more sinister at play?

LOST IN THE WOODS: THE MISSING FRIEND AND A FUGITIVE ON THE LOOSE
When Mitsuhiko mysteriously vanishes after mentioning a "camping trip," the Detective Boys and Professor Agasa set off into the dense forest to find him. Their search takes a dangerous turn when they encounter Officer Yamamura, who warns them of an escaped murderer lurking in the very woods they're searching. With each step deeper into the unknown, the group must navigate the perilous situation, racing against time to find their friend before they cross paths with the deadly fugitive.
