Thanks to BookSirens for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion.
This is book 7 of the multi-author series The Scandals and Scoundrels of Drury Lane, but I have not read the others in the series yet, and this appears to be a stand alone book. Though from what I can see, with the relationships in the story, this may be part of another series as well.
This a revenge story, as Kit Hollingsworth, at the tender age of 19, was implicated in a crime, wrongfully convicted, and sentenced to hang, but thanks to his aristocratic father, he was able to avoid the noose, and instead was transported to seven years of hard labour in Australia. During that time, he went from being a privileged, wealthy lord to a hard man, who was forced to hard labour, and fight to survive. He knows who is to blame for his situation, and his goal was to be able to make his back to England, prove his innocence, and seek his revenge on the three men he blames for his situation and the loss of his life as he knew it.
After 7 years, Kit was able to make his way to London. He has grown hard, weary, and focused on revenge. After making his way home, he discovers that he has lost his father as well in the time he was gone. His father, despairing he loss of his son, not hearing from Kit, and not being able to prove his innocence, appeared to give up and grow frail, dying a couple of years before Kit's return. But the good thing is that Kit finds out that he is not alone and without connections, but still has the friendship and loyalty of his childhood friends who have sought to prove his innocence over the years, helped his father, and now will stand by his side as he seeks his revenge.
But this is not just a revenge story, it is also a historical romance too, and it turns out that one of the men he has marked for revenge has died, and Kit seeks out his orphaned daughter to see if she is in any way aware of her father's deeds or living off any ill-gotten gains from his betrayal of Kit. He finds Suzannah Townsend working as a painter of backdrops at a Drury Lane theater. She is living a precarious life, making ends meet painting, and selling some of her art in Hyde Park. It is obvious she has not inherited any great wealth. Kit finds that he has not lost all his capacity to care, and finds himself falling in love with the pretty painter.
But that does not deter him from his goal of revenge against the other two men responsible for his conviction, and this makes him and those he cares for targets, as his trap for them closes.
An entertaining story of wrongful conviction, hardship, and revenge, with a background story of brotherhood and enduring friendships. The romance was sweet, quite sudden, with a bit of different social status vibe, and while I liked it, I felt that it was overshadowed and not as enthralling as the revenge story.
4 stars out of 5.
