⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a brilliant book! This inspirational history of the international LGBTQ+ movement will teach readers to accept and have pride in themselves and others, however they identify.

This is one of the books we have at @theliteracyhubs for the children to read - it’s bright, colourful and easily accessible. Though the topic is heavy at times, dealing with homophobic murder and other crime, it does so cautiously. It is certainly suitable for children, though discretion should be used concerning age.

I learnt so much from this book. Not just about the history behind the LGBTQ+ movement, but about people from across the world who were queer. It was inspiring to read about how people stood up for queer rights, with many giving their life. Without their blood, sweat and tears, I couldn’t marry my girlfriend or hold her hand in public.

This book has made me want to do more for queer people. I’ve decided to start supporting more queer owned businesses - so please fire any recommendations my way. I’ll start using my voice more to stand up for queer rights like those before me have done. I can’t recommend this book enough. It’s a must read for everyone.

This is such a beautiful book. It has rainbow page edges and is just bursting with colour. Props to the designer behind this because they really knocked it out of the park. I found the content interesting but felt the beginning was a bit more engaging than the later half of the book. It felt like towards the end it became more of a singular list, rather than a guided tour of historical LGBTQ+ events and people.

While I found this book in the children's non-fiction shelving at my library, I really loved the way the book didn't sugarcoat the history it was discussing. The AIDS pandemic was discussed a fair bit in this book, and I believe quite rightfully so as its a massive part of the LGBTQ+ history. Similarly, I kind of loved the moment that they addressed that Anne Lister 'wasn't always a nice person'. I don't think by saying this, it vilifies Lister in any way but instead shows that she's human.

There were other figures that were mentioned that I honestly don't have high opinions of . I know that's just personal preference but from things I've heard (which could even be incredibly incorrect) of them they can be problematic figures. On the other hand of this, I can't imagine a book discussing a history heteronormative practices without mentioning a load of people I would also find problematic. Despite my personal opinions and how much the two of them irk me, I can't deny they did the LGBTQ+ community a lot of good, and that should be celebrated.

The children's non-fiction at my library is quite varied, and this gem was in the same shelf as lift the flap books and books aimed at a much younger audience. If you're a parent, I would possibly have a quick flip through the book and evaluate. This book is amazing and I'm so glad I read it, but the LGBTQ+ history is not necessarily a happy one. There's mentions of sexual assault, rape, murder, the AIDS pandemic and bullying. The book doesn't go into detail, and I believe they dealt with these themes respectfully, but I also think this is something some people may want to keep in mind before reading.

Overall, I learnt a lot from this book and while my brain is way too sieve-like to hold onto the key dates and names, the moral of self-expression and pride is something that is really present in this book and will stick with me.

"I'm glad as heck you exist."

I can't remember where I found out about this book. It was around the same time that I was discovering lots of lovely new and inclusive children's picture books, so when I ordered it from the library I was expecting a long version of that. It turns out this book is actually aimed at a young through mid teenage audience (though I, as an adult, greatly enjoyed it too). Therefore I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and variety of topics covered. I'm happy to say I knew plenty of this history (mostly thanks to Jessica Kellgren-Fozard's LGBTQ+ historical profile videos on YT) but there was still A LOT I'd not heard about.

"It's okay to not know what your sexual preference or gender identity is. You don't have to label it to feel valid."

Have Pride starts in Ancient Greece and follows the history of LGBTQ+ people up to the modern day. It talks about various identities with a multicultural perspective and includes global stories, with a focus on British history. The material is emotionally hard to read at times; due to abhorrent hate and violence, LGBTQ+ history involves far too many tragic happenings. The book covers these with honesty and care but overall is a bright read. Encourages you be proud, happy and confident in who you are. Inspires you thanks to both the historical profiles of queer folk and the modern inserts from people on why they, personally, have pride.

Not only is the content inspiring and rainbow-filled but the actual pages are beautiful! An easy to read layout (with titles, captions, info bubbles all balanced perfectly) full of bright and colourful illustrations, plenty of photos and quotes. Because the LGBTQ+ community doesn't necessarily have hereditary ties, it can be hard to learn about, or feel connected, to the history of others who felt like you do. Have Pride is a thorough history, or as much as possible in less than 200 pages. I've already enjoyed taking names or dates from this book and doing my own research beyond the pages. Great stuff!

I loved this book. It's such an easy read for anyone who wants a basic understanding of LGBTQ history, and it was great to read something so visual. Just full of bright graphics and images.
It's got all the big names like Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Harvey Milk, and those that had a hand in making Pride a thing along with a load of 'firsts' like the first transgender person to undergo surgery, the first use of the term 'homosexual', the first country to decriminalize it etc.
I'd recommend it for those who want a condensed version of LGBTQ history, but mostly for heterosexual people who still feel the need to ask why we have Pride and why we're so loud about it. Read about the struggles gay and trans people had to face, read about the alienation and hatred they face, read about the untimely deaths brought onto them by the AIDS, suicide, and the hands of people who decided they were sub-human beings who had to die.

Have Pride: An Inspirational History of the LGBTQ+ Movement is a nicely packaged, well-researched entry point for queer history. As a middle school teacher, many texts exclude LGBTQ+ characters and themes (fiction) or content (nonfiction). Caldwell was able to provide a ready-for-all book that makes you think, reflect, and ultimately, want to learn more. I particularly enjoyed all of the advocate and ally references, movie and book titles, and feature boxes like "Have you heard of?" These mentions, although short, are beautiful springboards for further study. My favorite feature was the chapter-ending "Why I Have Pride" sections that gave voice and faces to real-life individuals in the trenches looking and fighting for a more inclusive world. Recommended for GR 6 and up.

Colourful and informative book about (mostly UK and US) LGBTQ+ history, with some clunky sentences and some bad representation and wording. Examples include naming the patrons of The Stonewall Inn as gay, lesbian, trans and drag queens, but not mentioning bisexuals (or other groups), calling Pride "gay Pride" at least once, and deadnaming trans people like Lili Elbe and Marsha P Johnson. It just feels like a book from 2020 should be better about inclusion and wording, and it makes me think they should've had more (diverse) consultants and/or sensitivity readers.

I didn't learn much from the book, as most of the people and events were already somewhat familiar to me, but it was still a useful read just to get historical events put into perspective.

I read this book for The Storygraph 2023 Genre Challenge (prompt: A nonfiction history book about an LGBTQIA+ issue or person).

This was a quick read, presented with vibrant pages. Though a short read, the pages are chock a block full of information about people who were integral to the LGBTQ+ movement throughout history going back as far as a few hundred years BC.

I appreciated that there didn't seem to be an agenda of blaming religion or anything, but the book also made it quite clear that the challenges of the LGBTQ+ movement are largely a result of both politics and religion, as is obvious to most.

A great read if you're looking for a quick overview!

This "beginner's guide" to the history of the LGBTQ+ movement is aimed towards young people, but it could appeal to anyone looking to brush up on their history.

It touches on important moments in history across the world, highlighting important figures and even featuring personal stories from young people.

Given its size, it is obviously meant to serve as a starting point for deeper study and reading about the movement for equal rights, but it comes highly recommended from me.

While this book gives a good history on gay and lesbian people, there is absolutely no mention of trans people in this book. This level of trans erasia is 110% insulting to me, a trans person, and it's not acceptable. Do not read this book.

An easy to read, basic introduction to LGBTQ+ history, people, and issues throughout the world. Visually appealing chapter headings, short profiles of famous and everyday people, and a comprehensive glossary make this book a great resource for ages 11+

A really accessible and easy to read overview about LGBTQ+ history that I wish I had as a teen because I would have loved this. Super interesting and engaging with eye-catching infographics that kept my super short attention span, it's a really great place to start if you want to know more about queer history!
