A Black woman’s modern guide to authentic happiness, healing, and radical transformation to foster a life of unapologetic self-expression
“If you asked my grandmother what self-care was,” says Chianti Lomax, “I’m pretty sure her response would ‘Self-care? That’s for rich white women!’” Our mothers and grandmothers were too busy fighting for the future of their families to even consider their own wellness and happiness―and now, as the inheritors of their mighty labors, we have the opportunity to do more than simply survive. So how do we thrive? How do Black women grow, transform, and make good use of the power we have?
In Evolving While Black , Lomax―renowned life coach and “Chief Happiness Curator”―shares a guide to help Black women achieve authentic happiness and liberation on their own terms. By shifting the culturally constrained language and perspective from which mindfulness and self-care practices are normally presented, she breaks down barriers and invites us to bring the power of these evidence-based teachings into our lives, families, and communities. This joyous guide paves the way for personal growth with Lomax’s “Black, Blessed, and Highly Favored” approach―presenting bite-sized actions that lead to healing, confidence, self-efficacy, and, most importantly, true self-love.
With no-bull bravery, honesty, and warmth, Evolving While Black bridges the gap between transformational practices and Black culture―welcoming us into a flourishing space of growth and self-discovery.
I’ve finally completed 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬 by Chianti Lomax and I must say, I enjoyed it. It was filled with practical advice delivered in a uniquely relatable way. If you know me, you know I love music. I am a hip-hop head and R&B babe to the core. So when I began reading the book and took notice to the author’s use of references from hip-hop and pop culture I knew I was going to love her writing style. Just to give you an example, while explaining the importance of mindfulness and remaining focused on the present, Chianti references a line from the album 𝘉𝘌 by hip-hop legend Common. She writes… “Never looking back, or too far in front of me. The present is a gift and I just want to be.” Reading Common’s words in this context resonated with me on a deeper level than when I mindlessly recite the lyrics while listening to the album. Another reference Chianti used came from one of my all time favorite movies, 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴. Chianti was in the mist of explaining the concept of self-compassion when she wrote… “So, how does this thing called self-compassion work? Let me break it down for you so that it can forever and consistently be broken. (If you get the movie reference, you and I could do Sunday brunch anytime.!)” As a woman who has watched 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 well over 50 times, I immediately caught reference. It was at this moment it became clear that Chianti and I could become BFFs😂. Moments like the above mentioned were sprinkled throughout the book. It was like getting great life lessons from a sista-friend. It was an enlightening, yet fun journey. Now, on to my next adventure in books. Can’t wait to tell you guys all about it😁.
This book was easy to read and while it is filled with tons of practical ways for women to apply the tools that Chianti uses with her coaching clients to their everyday life it was also full of humor. Evolving While Black isn’t just a guide to happiness, it’s a soulful journey through positive psychology that anyone can benefit from. I plan to share this book with the women I work with in therapy as an additional tool to aid in their healing journey.
This book felt like a good conversation wrapped in a warm blanket. As a licensed psychologist, I can confidently say that Chianti effortlessly wove key concepts steeped in sound psychological research. Her perspective made the content relatable, poignant and timely. If you need a boost, a reminder, inspiration or information on how to live abundantly with joy, do yourself a favor and grab this gem!
I had to come leave an official review as a fan of Chianti Lomax and this book. It is true and tried. This book is an easy read and so easy to put in to practice to lead anyone back to a healthier space.
