Powerful distils the essence of all Maisie teaches and the insights gained from her extensive coaching experience into an empowering guide to take control of your life.
Maisie Hill is a menstrual health expert with over 15 years of experience as a practitioner, coach, and birth doula. Maisie knows the power of working with the menstrual cycle and believes that our hormones are there to serve us and help us get what we want out of life.
In the growing trend for women to get a handle on their menstrual cycle and hormones, Maisie is a go-to authority and is quoted in publications from The Guardian to Grazia. Her first book, Period Power, came out May 2nd 2019 and became an instant bestseller, reaching the Top 50 of all books on Amazon. Her much-anticipated second book, Perimenopause Power, was published March 4th, 2020.
Really interesting book on the interplay between mind, body and emotion. Hill ruminates on the effects of hormones, habits and stigmas that can both positively and negatively alter our thoughts and our actions. Hill offers practical approaches and strategies to cultivate healthy relationships, foster agency and communicate effectively. Would definitely recommend this book it offers a lot of insight whilst being relatively easy to read! :)
I will admit, I had higher hopes for this book. I absolutely love Maisie, and period power remains one of the best books I have ever read, but this didn't cut it for me. There were many helpful pieces and bits and bobs that I would recommend the read for, like how she always starts her books with in depth biology so you understand the processes behind your thoughts, without jumping into gobbledy goop, but unfortunately I think there was a bit too much advertisement throughout for me, and it felt a bit "I know what I'm talking about, and you'll learn how to do this if you buy my membership" and her membership isn't cheap!
I loved Period Power and continue to recommend it whenever I can! But this book wasn’t quite as effective for me. The content has a lot of potential and there’s plenty of wisdom in this book. For me it feels like it’s covering an overview of a big range of topics without going in depth, and that format doesn’t work as well. I’m also not clear on who the audience is meant to be. It’s a bit repetitive for people who follow Maisie Hill’s other work and podcast. I hope others disagree with me and love this book because I want to support this author!
My first Maisie Hill book and I found it pretty powerful - excuse the pun! The chapter on procrastination hit hard as I was listening to the audiobook TO procrastinate! Then I ended up having a huge spring clean whilst listening to it and really enjoyed the easy approaches and learnings! The hormone information was pretty interesting for me and I am keen to read Maisie’s period power book now too.
A fairly basic self-help book on understanding emotions, but what sets it apart is its focus on the female experience. The real strength lies in its exploration of the science behind women’s emotional patterns — particularly how hormonal cycles can influence mood, reactions, and overall wellbeing. While the core advice may feel familiar, the biological context adds a thoughtful and validating dimension.
3.5. Some good tips and insights, easy to read and relate. Not groundbreaking, but helpful if it’s your first time thinking about how to approach your life and your relationships with others.
This started great. I loved the chapter on procrastination. As it went on I found it less interesting however I've read a couple of self help books recently and the all ultimately say the same thing!
