Lyla is a young woman who goes through the imaginable on her teen years. As consequence, she develops a profound self loath which eventually leads her to a journey of self destruction. This book is not for the faint at heart. However it gives us an ample view into the darkest place that lurks inside the human soul. I cringed many times. Not only for the rawness and graphic details depicted on this book. I cringed because like Lyla, at many points of my life I too wallowed in self loath. And even though I didn't go to the extreme of self destruction she did, I was convinced of not being good enough. The story of Lyla surfaces those feelings that we try to keep buried. Feelings we ignore hoping it will go away. Yes, I admit it was not an easy read. No pretty gifs or fuzzy feelings. But it did give me the reward of allowing me a moment of confronting demons that I avoid confronting or acknowledging. Also, it gives a glimpse of hope that we can all find the hidden treasures inside our hearts. I commend Miss Palmerin for writing such a raw and honest story.

Lyla although strong she is a self loathing broken eighteen year old. She has ambition and is counting down the days till she can leave Rigdon to start on that dream.
Before she leaves she has to endure some really bad times from Davis the bent cop, Bill from the liquor store, and Nathan from high school.
Lyla copes with all the heartache and bullying by drinking, drugs and cutting.
A heartfelt painful novella.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I need to just put this out there because this book changed a piece of me. And I'm not sure if it's a positive change or negative change. All I know is this book is a gut wrenching emotional beginning to one of the best series I have ever read.
I've read a lot of gruesome romance novels. Some that I fell in love with others that I detested, but I have never read a book like this. It's a gut wrenching 65 or so pages of what teenager Lyla Harper deals with in her small town. She has such a deploring image of who she thinks she is that substance abuse, bodily harm and sexual harm play a heavy hand in how she forms from teen to adult. We start off in her last year of high school and all Lyla wants is to get to graduation so she can leave this small town and those who tortured her behind... but life is never that easy. We always have road blocks, but Lyla's are more like mini tsunamis... each one as deadly as the last to the point that you wish you wouldn't survive them, but they keep coming and you've got to hold on.
Lyla is a survivor. I don't care how anyone else wants to put it but that phrase sums up how I feel about her. The way she describes her emotional and physical pain had me cringing at times. There were so many times when I had to stop, put my iPad down, and wipe the tears that had escaped. I wanted to take away all of Lyla's pain in any way I could. I felt her to my core.
Overall, I'm giving this novella 4.5 STARS out of 5 STARS because Mary E. Palmerin writes emotion like I have never seen. She made me feel so much during this book. It's one of a kind and I will never forget this book. The next book Succumbing to Scars and Sorrow is going to be just as amazing, I know it!

I love this book!!!!!
I read it during my lunch hour, that is how much I love Lyla.
Lyla is me and in a way I believe she ia a piece of all of us.
This girl is strong, beautiful, caring, and unbelievably real!!!!!
This story is not like most stories in my opinion!
While reading this book I could feel ever emotion that Lyla has. It is so crazy but when I read it I swear Lyla is my best damn friend.
Lyla story is redefining the definition of Beautiful! She is the definition of beauty!
So thank you Mary E. Palmerin for writing one bad ass story. This is the realest book I have read and I am looking foward to read more =)

Lyla Harper is broken and the coping mechanisms she uses to get through her miserable existence are extremely unhealthy (drinking & using drugs, cutting). She’s a magnet for misery; the popular girls pick on her, an attractive football player uses her and there’s even a prestigious man in town who rapes her whenever he feels like it. Because I’m sick in the head, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Lyla wallow in her misery and suffer abuse at every turn. I also enjoyed watching her overcome obstacles and focus on reaching her goal of leaving the small, suffocating town she lives in. What I didn’t like and was very disappointed by though was the ending. To say that this story ends with a HEA is a severe understatement and for me, a disappointment. Knowing there are more books in the series, I expected there to be some sort of segue at the end, something to entice me to want to keep reading on, yet there was absolutely nothing. I love Mary Palmerin though so I’m going to keep reading and hopefully things get exciting (tragic) for Lyla again!

Secrets of a Broken Girl, a prequel to Succumbing to Scars and Sorrow, grabbed me from the start. For me, it was almost like reading from Lyla's diary. Seeing things from her perspective and trying to comprehend why she did the things she did.
Lyla's story is a heart wrenching one. Although it's a novella, I'll admit that it's not an easy read. This book takes you to a dark place where those who's been in Lyla's situation hasn't found the strength and courage to face their demons or had a chance to live and tell their story. I found myself wanting to shake Lyla and tell her she is loved. I wanted to help her. Tell her that it's ok to burden love ones with your sorrow. Then go out and find the losers who'd hurt her and make them pay for what they did to her.
Thank you Mary, for sharing Lyla's story with me and other readers out there. What I learned is we are all hard wired differently. Those like Lyla self inflict on drugs, alcohol and self mutilation as a way to cope. I hope that your book will give HOPE to those who have been through the trauma that Lyla has. Life is not always rainbows and unicorns but there is that light at the end of the tunnel.

We see Lyla just months before she is due to leave her hometown of Rigdon, Kansas and move to Chicago.
She goes to school, does her homework and is at the top of her class, but it is the insights into her already troubled past, the conflict that resides in her mind and the terrible ordeals she faces in those final months that make this short read emotionally raw and tragic, yet full of hope.
The author writes a heartbreaking tale that echoes something many women experience. She is faced with being ostracised, suffers from low self-esteem, no confidence and a desire to be like all the other girls in school. She believes she is unworthy of love and friendship and many a tear was shed because U wanted to tell her everything would be okay. My heart broke again and again as Lyla sank further into her depression as more pressure and pain were piled on top of her. I smiled when she found her strength to fight back, and found myself counting down the months with her until she got her fresh start in Chicago.
This story was emotional and full of angst. It is written impeccably and while it isn’t for the feint-hearted, it gets you thinking, sitting on the edge of your seat and rooting for the underdog. It is not an easy read but it’ll have you hooked and emotional from the first page. It is a five star must read and I highly recommend it, along with the rest of The Sorrow Series.

Let me preface by saying that I actually met this incredible author this weekend:)
Also, I sat with a group of bloggers who sang the praises of this book and I thought to myself "Wow! This sounds good....lemme download it. I can read it on the plane ride home" I buckled my seat belt on the plane and I'm damn glad I did because what spilled out on the pages of this book had me in tears...literally! Thank GOD I had a window seat because as I read about Lyla I was astounded! I teared up as I read the torment and sadness this poor girl went through. This book opened my eyes to the world of bullying, ridiculing and the assessment of self worth. I will warn you this book deals with severe emotional issues.. there is cutting, loss of self esteem, drug & alcohol use and rape. Not my normal genre to read but I'm so glad I read this book! Your heart goes out to this beautiful girl who thinks she is worthless because some meaningless girls in high school tell her she is. The writer made you feel like you were in the room with Lyla...you could feel the blade cut into her skin and you could feel the pain she was going through. Then, just when she let her guard down and tried to trust and enjoy being with someone, BAM! She was a fool for believing.
Mary Palmerin...you have a real gift and I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed this book! By the end I was pumping my fists screaming "YES! Lyla...YOU GO GIRL!" I'm a new fan and I will follow you Mary Palmerin to the end of the earth with your beautiful, beautiful Lyla:) xxoo!

4 Scarred Stars!
"I’ve always had this dark place within my soul and a sadness that never seems to disappear."
I didn't read the blurb, I went in blind. I'm wondering where the rest is? I'm thinking this is a prequel. Anyway, I wanted to see what else Mary E. Palmerin has written, I really enjoyed the dark in Gwendolyn VS The Band of Barren Hearts. I'm definitely seeing a pattern in her work, she likes to destroy her characters, she like to make us gasp with shock, and she's one helleva writer.
A story of one girl's journey through self destruction. Lyla lives the life of your everyday teenager... But what's sad is, it's the real-life we all don't talk about. The self doubt, bullying, and secrets that hold all the venom to destroy. A path of self harm, drugs, and abuse. Can she make out, find some form of happiness, or is she doomed to a future of pain in so many ways? I need to know what waits in the future. I would like to know about her past, and what was the catalyst to her state of mind. I need to dig further into her mind, play with it.
I was completely intuned with Lyla, her destructive ways resonated with me on a personal level. After I finished reading, I thought back to my past and remembered just how terrifying growing up was, especially with tragic events that lead us down the path of no return. This book definitely hooked me, I need more without a doubt. Mary E. Palmerin can spin a web of destruction.

I adore reading broken characters who struggle through desperate times to find their happiness, be it for a moment or forever.
Mary has this beautiful way of making a dark story un-put-down-able! I didn't get very much done today... I read all day. I will probably read all night because I want more from this series right away.
Lyla's story is so REAL - the struggle, the pain, the terror I felt it all as I turned every page. I am undoubtably hooked and plan to devour the rest of this series over the next few days.
I love that she hasn't shied away from the harsh stuff, the issues are right there at the surface.

This book grabbed me and had me feeling the pain Lyla was going through. Then you put Nathan and Davis into her pain and I want to beat both of them .

Lyla is conditioned for attracting men who prey upon her vulnerabilities. She reminds herself that she is imperfect and damaged. For now she accepts the intimacy from guys eventhough it’s unhealthy. She’s too weak to change that part of her life. She instead focuses on getting out of Rigdon. This is her strength and driving force to achieve better friends and possibly a man that is genuine and caring.
Overall:
Lyla is a girl torn between her scars and sorrow. Both bring her pain and are reminders of how damaged she is, yet she is too weak to break the cycle.
Her pain was raw, intense and honest. Lyla’s character is numb, just a shell of herself. Her scars and sorrow are the only evidence of her pain. She walks through life a zombie hoping to be ignored.
You will witness a very tragic incident on Lyla’s eighteenth birthday. You will wonder how it is that she gets up everyday pretending to be happy when inside she’s dying a slow death. Death seems like the easier route considering the damaged upbringing. Instead Lyla chooses not to define herself by her imperfections. She strives to overcome the ugly, brutal, and scary reality of her life. She perseveres with hope, strength, and faith. She may be broken but she is also a survivor.

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet this author at a book signing this last weekend. I came across her accidently and was drawn into her books due to the passion she had when she told me about the story. It wasn’t a normal conversation between reader and author where you can tell the author is proud of her work, Mary was passionate about the story and message she is trying to get out. She gave me a copy of her books and asked me to give her story a try. On one hand I am so thrilled I accepted the challenge and on the other hand I am HONORED that I have this book and am able to read the beginning of Lyla’s story.
The first book is rather short and primarily explains the life Lyla came from and the future she is working hard for. In those few pages Mary described a woman that as a reader I could connect to. Her writing style was not only smooth but the choice of words was so powerful it flowed from the pages and created the story in both the readers mind and soul. She brought Lyla to life and it was a painful life that stole my heart and begged me to listen.
Ten months is all she has left before she can leave small town Kansas and go to Chicago. With college set up and her dreams ready to be fulfilled, she only had to survive the nightmares and abuse that is her world for a little while longer. She deals with things from her past that shattered her, siblings that are involved in their own lives, bullies from society. The few things she can count on are hidden in her room and bring into existence the pain she feels but can’t make verbal. Things are hard enough but let’s add Davis, the local law enforcement who takes her torture to another level. With the vices of drinking, drugs and cutting, she vows to survive and get out. Ten months till freedom and she can pack her bags and forget the horrid past she lived through.
Davis won’t go away though with this threats and promises that he will destroy her. Lyla can’t allow her mother and stepfather to know her secrets because the disappointment in their faces will kill her. Darkness continues to grow in her world till finally it is enough. Her stomach is covered in scars that plead for someone to notice, her heart shut off because of the pain she has suffered from others lies and actions. The last year of high school could be what finally kills her last reason to live.
The author wrote of a very strong lady who stumbles and falls sometimes, but more than likely she has been knocked down and run over in life. She is told that the one thing that brings her comfort is no longer acceptable but society has no clue that finding other solutions for the pain is easier said than done. I could feel her suffering and despair, I wanted to go kick some butt and get her out sooner. I felt the panic in the words as I read and the overwhelming joy when she finally left for college. I was overcome with emotions when the little bird with a broken wing finally found her freedom on the campus of her dream college. I will be starting the second book in this series now because I became so invested in Lyla I need to see her journey. I can’t remember feeling this invested and connected to a character before. Lyla reminded me that many times in life there is no other option than survival.

I started this book when I laid down for bed one night. I figured I would read half of it and finish the rest in the morning. Mary Palmerin had other plans for me. I began this book in the wee hours of the morning and was completely sucked in. I couldn't stop turning the pages. I couldn't put it down if I wanted to. When I finished I was left feeling like I did when I was 16. Raw, used, unloved, and completely alone. Just like Lyla Harper. I put my nearly dead phone on my dresser and laid there feeling like Mary had held my hand taking me back into my past. As much as I loved it, I hated it. There aren't enough writers who tackle this topic. The ones who do would be lucky to be able to write it as beautifully poetic as Mary does.
Lyla Harper is a teenage girl who deals with the same issues every girl deals with...almost. She struggles through her teenage years trying to find acceptance, friendship, love, and fights off self loathing. Only thing is Lyla hides secrets. These secrets begin to define who she is and who she is becoming. Her inner monologues are written in such a devastatingly beautiful prose making you feel like you are peering into her soul. You feel the agony she is living. The things that happen to her make you cry out for her and want so badly to comfort her in some way. Her self depreciation and mutilation...you can feel every bit of it,especially if you have lived it. I could quote this book all day long. There are so many perfectly stated lines. I swear some of these have passed through my own mind.
"I lost faith in others and a tiny shard of my soul died a little more each day. I became numb. I coached myself to block it out as best as I could."

You feel the agony she is living. The things that happen to her make you cry out for her and want so badly to comfort her in some way. Her self depreciation and mutilation...you can feel every bit of it,especially if you have lived it. I could quote this book all day long. There are so many perfectly stated lines. I swear some of these have passed through my own mind.

What an amazing book! I was hooked from start to finish. It's a short read so I was able to finish it in one sitting. I actually hadn't planned on starting this book until later this week but I was sucked in by the synopsis and once I started reading I couldn't stop, even a headache didn't stop me. I'm even hurrying through this review so I can start on the next book. So, I'm going to make this somewhat short and sweet.
Although this book ended at a place that left me feeling content the rest of the story will make you feel anything but. My heart shattered for the situations thrown Lyla's way. She endured so much and I found myself wanting to jump into this book and hold her hand. I'm talking major situations that you should prepare yourself for if you're going to read this. I won't give things away but I will say, don't expect rainbows and butterflies. Lyla's story (so far) is anything but.
A lot of people talk about author's writing styles and it wasn't until recently that I fully grasped that. Mary's words captured me from beginning to end. This is a prequel novella before Mary's fifth book in the series releases in September. It gives us the backstory of the main character, Lyla Harper, and the life she lead before college.
Even as a character in a book, it's horrible for someone to experience such negativity in high school from fellow students. Especially when that negative attention and disparagement leads to drug and alcohol abuse, and self mutilation, just to escape what's been drummed into your head. You're worthless, you're nothing, you're ... *insert insult here* etc. Lyla turns to these outlets on a regular basis and finds herself trapped in a viscious cycle until it's forcibly broken. But unfortunately, it seems the break just breaks her more.
Feel Lyla's slipping self worth and her own life blood slipping through her fingers. Feel the anguish of the nasty voices running their mouths off through her head and the oblivion she seeks snorting coke. As her life plummets in a downward spiral, she keeps a count on how long it'll be until she's able to graduate and escape the horrid little town she lives in.
Definitely worth a read, but fair warning, there is more nastiness than what I mentioned, so be prepared. It really tugs on the emotions.

Secrets of a Broken Girl by Mary Elizabeth Palmerin is a prequel novella to her debut novel Succumbing to Scars and Sorrow in wich we meet Lyla before she leaves Rigdon, Kansas to move to Chicago. It is a quick read, but a story packed with the intense, true to life emotions and struggles that too many young women experience.
Even before her "problem" started, Lyla had too many demons to fight and her way of coping with them was far from healthy. In Secrets of a Broken Girl, we follow her during her last year of high school and a series of life-changing events. Lyla's story happens around us everyday and Ms Palmerin did an impeccable job writing it down. There is no downtime in that story. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and you'll find it impossible to put it down before you reach the last page. I became so engaged into Lyla's journey that I wanted to hug her when she was at her low (as well as to pay Davis Moore a visit!) and high-five her when she found her strenght to fight back.
This is a story of sorrow, but also a story of hope. There is no sugar coating, the emotions and the descriptions are raw and graphic. This book is by no means an easy read, but real life is not easy either. It is a mustread for anyone who wants to know what it is to go through a rough time as a teenager and emerge stronger.

I'm listening to "Human", by Chrstina Perri as I write this. This song (AND THE MUSIC VIDEO) fits sooo well with this book and pretty much the rest of the series. <3
So I started reading this book when I left school to go to the doctor's for a check-up. I didn't read the description before starting it, so I didn't know exactly what I was getting myself into. As I started to delve into Lyla's story, my heart started to break, and my eyes started to tear up. Maybe if I was in a different setting, I would have been able to toughen up to the story a bit more, but I've had some minor problems with things like my weight and how I perceived myself, and so being at that office, possibly about to get interrogated by my doctor on whether I am mentally okay, I could somehow relate to Lyla's thoughts. I know just how terrible things can get, and to see Lyla go through everything that happens to her unhatched memories of my own. I could relate to Lyla, even if it is on a completely different level.

WOW. I just finished and wow. I can say that I have a mixture of emotions running through me. I am not sure all people will appreciate the wonderful ness this author has touched on... this is a very dark book in a way that it won't leave me anytime soon. Lyla's journey reminded me of high school in ways I would like to forget. If you were a certain type of person this may cause extreme emotions in you, if you are a different kind of person it may open your eyes, and if you are a loving parent it will hurt you through and through, that these events could harm someone in your life.
I give this five stars because I feel this author painted a scene and walked me through it, it didn't drag, it didn't expire, it ruptured emotions from me, and peeked my curious mind. I wanted to know more. Please be warned this book is not butterflies and rainbows and isn't intended for those who prefer to read those. I don't like spoilers so I hope this is vague enough for those who read it, but also intrigues you to turn the page.

Broken is a book that tugged on my heart strings. To be so young, and have that much depression, and self-loathing just broke my heart! I was rooting for Lyla the whole book, hoping that things would turn around for her. All she wants is to get out of Rigdon, a small town in Kansas, where there aren’t many secrets. Becoming a loner, she’s closed off, using alcohol, drugs, and a razor blade to make herself numb. One night in particular changed her forever, she loses her innocence, making her feel even more worthless.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it gave me insight into depression, and how it can affect a person. This book isn’t for the faint of heart, there are some dark things that happen and know that this isn’t a love story by any means. I hope you connect with Lyla, like I did, and hope to see her find herself beautiful and not broken after all. Even though what Lyla went through is heart wrenching, the ending made up for it. I know there is more to her story and I look forward to reading about it.

This girl is demolished. Mary E. Palmerin warned me about her stories that totally rip your guts out and boy she did a bang up job with Lyla. The girl never caught a break.
Lyla has lived with sorrow most of her young life. Not the best childhood parlayed into not the best young adult years as well. She isn't the stick-thin girl all the boys are after, not popular and not looking to be. What she wants is to get out of her small town and into college in Chicago, where she can start fresh. The count down in her head is what keeps her bouncing back from one bad situation after another. She wants to live, just not in Rigdon, Kansas.
We go through various serious situations with Layla and keep our fingers crossed that she will survive to make it to her end goal. It's hard to imagine an eighteen year old girl going through this, but they're out there I'm sure.

Wow, that girl has it bad. We've all been the typical teenage girl with insecurities and self doubt but Lyla is at the bottom of the pile in her mind. She never thinks that she is worthy of pretty much anything. She self harms, which thankfully isn't too descriptive, she drinks and takes drugs just to try and cope with everyday life. This brought out a lot of emotions for me, the main being sheer sorrow at what that poor girl goes through. Her family is very loving that's always clear. I think it's more the lack of friendship and actually having someone to talk to. This one is definitely not for the faint at heart, not only is there self harming but there's also a scene of rape which again isn't too descriptive but you know what's happening. A good start to a series, which is a very good price for each installment. Looking forward to seeing how Lyla is going to manage with what else life could possibly throw at her.

Let me first say Well Done! This is a very well written and it hit some tough topics that aren't easy to talk about let alone write about. So Kudos to you Mary for bringing it to light! I want to also point out this is a very intense book so I wouldn't recommend for anyone 18under.

This book was like no other that I have ever read. It was very raw and extremely emotional and at times I winced and wanted to scream NO!for Lyla. I wanted to reach out and hug her so tightly and take away her all of her pain. She's endured so much and she's also a survivor. She never wants anyone to view her as a victim. I think everyone will see a little bit of themselves in Lyla. I know I did. Even though Lyla thinks she's not beautiful, I thought she was a beautiful person both inside and out. Mary Palmerin did an incredible and amazing job telling Lyla's story. I can't wait to read the rest of books in this series.

is this an Oprah book?
Depressing, just not my cup of tea and I do like dark and angsty. Not enough HOPE for me to read the rest of the series. Reminds me of an Oprah's favorite book club book which I found to be more depressing than my taste could handle. I realize there are people who enjoy this sort of story and the author did a good job of writing it The fact that the main character keeps letting herself be used by creeps is just off putting since she is smart enough to get a scholarship to Loyola. How does she do that with the suicide attempt and the drinking and drugs never mind the cutting? Just not for me but I do think it may be for others.

NOT READY TO MAKE NICE
My heart breaks in the first chapter for Lyla Elizabeth Harper.
The story is told as if Lyla is writing everything down in a journal, about how unjust her life is and when all of your beliefs and dreams have constantly been trampled on that you only see yourself as NOTHING.
Lyla is faced with everyday real life issues and while I do no not feel pity for Lyla I only see her as a strong teenager turning into an ever stronger adult.
Mary certainly knows how to write a raw and gritty story about subjects that are constantly pushed under the table and that people are too scared to talk about.
Thankyou Mary for bringing these issues to surface again.

Since it's a novella this was a quick read but should be a must read before reading Succumbing to Scars and Sorrow.
We get the whole background to Lyla and learn how much she had to endure and suffer.
This is on the darker read but it works. Quite emotional that all Lyla has gone through. You feel her pain as if you were there. Quite intense. I highly recommend this quick read and go through this emotional intense novella.

A tragically beautiful introduction into the life of Lyla Elizabeth Harper. This young woman endures so much pain and heartache leading up to her senior year of high school. This introduction will rip your chest open, wiggle your heart, leave the wounds gaping and craving more.
So much pain, heartache and emotions were involved with this introduction and I'm looking forward to experiencing them all going forward. This poor girl, I can't even imagine. It's so hard to stay strong when the world has turned its back on you. I'm looking forward to more Lyla.

This story is about a girl who went thru a lot in her life in school she dealt with it in a way that she could and she knew that it wasn't the correct way to deal with it but she had her sights set for after graduation to make her life better. I really enjoyed this story and how it was written. Mary did a great job with this story I truly enjoyed it. I am excited to read more of her stories.

This is the first in the Scars and Sorrow series. In this novella we meet the lovely but broken Lyla. All I wanted to do was hug Lyla and tell her that someone cares. It brought so many emotions out of me. Although it's a short read its not a light read. It's an emotional and angsty read and the author holds nothing back. Looking forward to reading Succumbing.
