I’ve been cursed with a prophecy. I will murder my own fated mate. Though it nearly destroys me, I vow never to find her. What I do find are humans invading my world and stealing from my land. Those I do not kill flee from my rage, leaving behind one terrified yet defiant woman. I take Torrance back to my castle to interrogate her, though I have neither time nor patience for a prisoner. I should be prioritizing joining the Council of the Gods. But only mated, married gods are granted access. I do not have a bride. But I do have an insolent human woman in my tower. And she’s just desperate enough to strike a bargain with me…
TORRANCE
Wylfrael is the most powerful being I’ve ever encountered. A winged immortal who can kill with a mere wave of his hand. He’s arrogant and alien. Demanding and dangerous. Brutal, even beautiful, though I hate him too much to admit it. He hates me, too. But even though my captor despises me, he needs me. He requires a bride for political reasons and he makes me an offer I have no choice but to accept. Marry him, play the part of his happy wife, and he’ll give me the one thing I want My freedom. But inside our fake marriage, hate turns into something else. Something dark and strange and needy. I don’t recognize my treacherous body, and as I slide further into my husband’s deadly grasp, I fight him with everything I have. He can have my vow. He can even have my desire. But if I let him get his claws into my heart… He will never let me go .
This book feels like it’s trying too hard. This doesn’t read like Alien romance, it’s very fantasy-esque. It reminds me why I don’t actually read fantasy with all the exposition, new made up words, characters with unpronounceable names and origins as well as incomprehensible physical descriptions of weird beings. Boooo. I can’t take another 430 pages of this, for the safety and security of everyone around me I need to set this aside.
ARC // If you’ve read Ursa’s Sea Sand Warlords series, this new series takes place in the same world but we have new aliens and new planets. Once again the women have been abducted by governments and forced to work under threat of punishment. There’s richly detailed world building along the lines of what you would read in fantasy romance. Truthfully, it feels more paranormal fantasy romance than alien romance.
I really wanted to love it but it sacrificed character development—and subsequently pacing—for world building and relegated the romance to a subplot. Character interactions is where Ursa truly shines and there was precious little of it. I’m also not a fan of books that masquerade as alien romance but are more fantasy/paranormal than alien. Setting it on another planet to catalogue it as alien doesn’t work for me.
I loved this book. Torrance and Wylf were perfect together and it helped that they had a enemies to lovers arc that actually made sense. Neither of them were inherently bad people. Although, I am more excited about Mr shadow God’s book than the upcoming sequel and he reads more like a villain. Sweet love story, but as Taer said to me while we buddy read this book, it would have made more sense as a fantasy with fae.
Spice: 3.5/5
Triggers: near death, violence/gore, discussion of abduction, grief, captivity
I gobble up every book that Ursa Dax produces, so when she asked me if I wanted an early copy of this book, I jumped on it! Of course...I missed posting my review ahead of time...but that in no way reflects my love of this story. When I tell you this has the feel of an alien Beauty and the Beast, I am not exaggerating. We have a young woman kidnapped and barricaded in a room, only allowed to roam free when she agrees to have meals with her captor and stays within the grounds of his home. There are servants who are kind to her and do some light convincing of their master to show her compassion. He has a temper, though much more tightly leashed than the famed Beast, and he has a soft spot for her and keeping her safe. Where things deviate is where my little romantic heart flutters - they agree to a marriage of convenience, but to everyone else, they have to pretend to love each other. It makes for very steamy moments, and I loved seeing their love unfold despite all their best efforts otherwise.
Being kidnapped two months ago and forced to work for her government kidnappers was not on Torrance's bingo card this year. As an astrophysicist who recently lost her father, the only thing she wants is to be stargazing and mourning her loss, but instead she's on an alien planet and constantly threatened with physical harm. When she is heading back to the ship under the guise of menstruation (the captors never asked questions if you said that), the sky turns to stone and a flying giant appears, causing an avalanche that buries her deep in the snow. Her captors gone, she ends up rescued and taken captive by the giant, later learning his name is Wylfrael and he is a very angry Stone God. Wylfrael has been in a deep healing sleep for many generations when he finally comes back to his home planet, only to find that human invaders have started harvesting the local plant life, and he is angry. Eliminating the ones with weapons was easy, but figuring out what to do with the fragile human is another matter entirely. And then there is the dilemma about his fading star map, which can only be remedied by finding his mate. Whom is he is fated to kill. Marriage to Torrance will ensure he gets an audience with those who can help with star madness, but without his mate, his doom is inevitable.
I had so much fun reading this book, from Wylfrael's grumpy yet soft-hearted personality to Torrance's assertive nature that worked so hard to never let Wylfrael get the better of her. For a while there was quite the language barrier, which made things even more intriguing. Wylfrael couldn't help but be attracted to Torrance, and when she cried without him being able to find out why, he felt so helpless. He was so determined not to have feelings for her, but they were there from almost the very beginning. And with every escape attempt and push to have more independence in their relationship, Torrance cracked a little piece of the ice surrounding Wylfrael's heart. Even with the question of who his mate would be still in doubt, they were falling more in love with each other every day they had to fake it for the servants. Pretending to have affection just made the already-existing feelings spill out of them, and soon the pretending became reality. Torrance was devastated to learn of Wylfrael's fragile state without a mate, and Wylfrael couldn't bear to think of what would happen to her without him near. And he absolutely refused to think about the fact that he would remain immortal without a mate, so Torrance would eventually die. Sweet Wylfrael. All bluster on the outside but an absolute marshmallow underneath. My perfect hero.
So excited to see where this series takes us next! I am already loving all the other male characters who will be future heroes, and the women are clearly going to be complex and strong. It's going to be another bingeable series.
**I received a free copy from the author and this is my honest review.**
"The things we are born to love the hardest are always the things that die. And when they die... They'll kill us, too " . . . Can't wait for the next book in this series. These sky doors are amazing and I'm desperate to talk to animals too 🥺
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 🖤💙❤️💜 Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙 World building: 🌏🌍🌎 Character development: ☹️😮😋😄 Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration type: Dual Narration
The Hero:Asha Wylfrael - he is an immortal stone sky god on his planet and was sort of hibernating for many years and came out of hibernation to capture his cousin who is a berserker god who had gone crazy. Immortals all go crazy after living too long, the only saving grace is when they find their fated mate who turns them mortal, at that point they can join the council because becoming mortal has made them smarter and able to appreciate things more. Though since Wylfrael had been gone for so long, things changed, and the council needs more members.
The heroine:Torrance - she is an astrophysicist working on an alien planet. Her father died not long ago. She is a captive of the government and forced to work for them on a hostile planet, but when the sky turns to stone and an alien god appears, she is seen as a human invader and taken prisoner by Asha Wylfrael.
The Story: Wylfrael wants to be on the council and fix things that have broken when he was sleeping. Though he hasn’t found his fated mate, and then he gets a prophecy that he will end up killing his mate, so he doesn’t want to find her. Since he has Torrence as a captive, he makes her his fake mate in order to join the council, though as they get to know each other, they slowly fall for each other.
This isn’t one of my favorite alien romances, though it isn’t bad. I think it was just longer than it needed to be. I did like the fact that Wylfrael sees the humans as alien invaders who have been stealing from his world and when they first see him, they think he is a monster and use weapons on him, so he kills most of them and takes Torrance hostage. This book went a bit too long before Wylfrael gave Torrance a translator, so they had trouble communicating for quite some time.
This audiobook was told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Patrick Zeller and Angelina Rocca. Patrick Zeller has a nice deep voice and is so expressive, he does a great job. Angelina Rocca has a soft, feminine voice that I enjoyed quite a bit as well.
This is paranormal fantasy and it is better if you know that going in. The astrophysicist FMC is not going to ask even 1% of the questions she should. Accept the universal answer "A wizard did it" and this book is just fine.
It is the first book in a series so worldbuilding takes up a lot of real estate vs. character stuff. I expect the next books to ease up on that and have the relationships play a larger role. I want the women to use their skills and education more. FMC in this one was just sorta cockstruck and useless.
Yall this was so good 😭 I'll post a full review along with my thoughts once the book is released but this was the authors best so far. I loved this so much, such a delicious slow burn with delicious world building 😍😍 Also!! You can read this one before reading any of the others. Definitely worth it
*******
This book was SO good. This one is able to be read without reading any of the authors other books. This was such a wonderfully slow burn. The hero, Wylfrael, is so head over heels in love with the fmc Torrance. The progression felt so natural and real. There was no awkwardness. Both characters felt like real people with real emotions and feelings and thoughts and not caricatures. Some parts gave me Beauty and the Beast vibes. The heroine and a team of other scientists are kidnapped by the government and sent off to this other planet to basically steal/research resources. This planet just happens to be the mmcs planet, that he is god over. He has just awakened from a long healing slumber after fighting with his cousin, Skalla. Skalla had went mate mad after searching for years and years for his mate and nearly killed the mmc. He had to heal for many years, only to stumble upon humans destroying his land. He kills many soldiers and chases off the rest, and keeps only the FMC captive. He locks her up in his castle but she is treated very well by the workers there and eventually him. They gradually learn to like each other, and then love. The mmc needs to join this council of gods(who only accept mated gods) in order to find and subdue his cousin, and to do so, he proposes a fake marriage with the fmc. In return, he will be able to not only save Skalla, but will also be able to help Torrance find her human friends who she was separated from when Wylfrael woke and they ran. We get a lot of really amazing moments in their day to day lives. Learning each other and learning to care for each other and gradually trusting and turning from enemies to lovers. Eventually they get married, where they both decide to marry because they love each other (not because they have to) although they are still not mates and have to pretend to be. They head to the council of gods and are admitted entrance. It's very suspicious because no one is there and the MMC has a thought of how unusual that is, seeing that at least 2 gods are always on premises. A booming voice echoes out, telling Torrance and Wylfrael that there is to be a test, which is also new. A monster comes towards Torrance and Wylf chases it away and eventually kills it - although it turns out the gods were playing a cruel trick. It was not really a monster. They performed an illusion and it was really Torrance, and Wylf killed her with his own blade. He had heard a prophecy from Runwebbe at the beginning that he would kill his fated mate, and it is at that moment that he realizes that they really are mates. She dies, and he opens a door to this shadowland where a god named Sceadulyr lives, who he bargains with to bring Torrance back to life. He agrees, but in exchange Wylf must open sky doors for him so he can find his mate since Sceadulyr's sky map across his skin has completely gone out, rendering him incapable of opening his own doors. Torrance is saved and they eventually find the other human women, all happy and safe.
There was the perfect amount of smut. Perfect world building. Character building. I loved the whole knotting thing, although Wylfraels friend says something about sharing blood to Torrance and that wasn't explained further. Torrance was confused about the quote and we never learned the meaning behind it. Super interested in reading the other sky gods stories. This is a great jumping off point if you want to read this author. It's literally her best book, it is amazing. It is scifi, with aliens, but I feel like someone who reads fantasy might also enjoy it. It is just wonderful. It's the type of book that leaves you feeling giddy afterwards.

I really enjoy the Sea Sand books so I wanted to love this soo bad but it didn’t click with me as much as I wanted it to.
For one, I felt like it dragged a lot. It’s definitely on a bigger scope than the other series and encompassed a vast universe, but somehow still felt slow and repetitive at times.
I also wanted more from their romance. At like 3/4 in I still barely felt more than lust and interest. He was gone a lot trying to avoid his feelings for her and I think that’s where it faltered.
Also, this isn’t the hugest deal but I really thought the fated mate thing and the way it’s so important and all encompassing would mean he was a virgin but he’s not. (Although they say a different character is so I’m looking forward to his book 😂) Which, ok, he’s been around for centuries. But my biggest pet peeve is during a sex scene when a hero starts comparing it to his past. Twice he’s thinking of “dalliances” with other aliens and how their bodies and pleasures differed. And it’s not specific to a person but it always gives me the ick - just focus on the heroine, I don’t need to be hearing that in the middle of everything.
But he says he had “relationships” but had never been in love so..
Once they finally give in, I felt their chemistry a bit more. I wish we had that for a longer time so the end was even more impactful.
It was an interesting take on traveling between worlds and I liked the side characters! I think because it was more expansive than the other series I wanted more action or plot. Maybe future books will have that.
Overall, it wasn’t my ultimate favorite but I’m interested in the world and will continue!

“You're like a new star in my world. Beloved. Bright. So beguiling that I am on my knees before you, hoping you’ll turn just a little of your light on me.”
I loved Ursa Dax’s Sea Sand Warlords series and this one was no different! Alien God is a great start to this new series. There was wonderful world building and while there is quite a bit at the beginning of the story I felt it helped me understand the species on Sionnach better and how the Stone Sky Gods work with their sky maps and fated mates. The pacing was perfect up until the end where I felt it was a bit rushed. A lot of things happen towards the end.
The banter between Wylfrael and Torrance is fantastic and had me laughing throughout the whole book. It is a slow burn but there’s plenty of delicious tension until the two main characters come to their senses! I loved the side characters on Sionnach, as well as the other Stone Sky Gods. I am already in love with Sceadulyr and I can’t wait to see more of his story!
Great world, great characters, and wonderful tension and spice!
I don't think I can put into words how much I enjoyed my FIRST EVER Ursa Dax novel which also happened to be an ARC.
If receiving an ARC ever ceases to give me thrill from the tips of my toes to the crown of my head then I don't deserve them any more.
I didn't read any blurbs because I like to avoid spoilers but I squealed like a piglet on Christmas morning when one of my favourite tropes came out to play.
So looking forward to the rest of this series and to root through the back catalog... I have a feeling that me and the afore mentioned piglet will not be parting company any time soon.
4 NSFW Stars (the mmc has stars on his body and his penis... just read the book!)
If you’re looking for a solid alien romance - look no further! This has almost everything I look for in alien romance and it’s done pretty dang well.
Wylf is an alpha alien god with cool stone powers and the ability to travel between worlds. There’s a lot of lore for his kind and how it all works, but it was explained in a super digestible way. I loved how Torrance tried to understand everything from a scientific pov, but somethings just couldn’t be explained. Wylf was a good mix of protective and possessive with some real emotional intelligence.
Torrance was fine - I wasn’t obsessed with her but I also didn’t hate her by any means. In the beginning she was a little annoying, but she definitely got better.
Their romance was pretty well done, even though we knew the whole time how it would all go down. I will say the conflict in the last 15%ish had the potential to piss me tf off, but it didn’t! What happened was actually interesting and makes me intrigued for future books! I also liked that they moved on from what happened pretty quickly and didn’t dwell on it all. I will say though, the ending was rushed for me. It felt like SO much happened in the last chapter that I was getting whiplash.
I think we have a lot of potential for other books in the series with the other stone sky gods we met in this one. I’m most excited for Sceadulyr’s because I LOVE a sarcastic and morally grey man.
This was such a complex book. It was not easy getting into this new world of aliens, space travel, and unique naming systems. I thought this would be an easy read like the Ursa Dax books but it was not. It is not a bad thing but it did take more time to get through it.
The story starts off with a stony sky god fighting with another one. (It was gory and a shock of an intro.) The god ruling council is not assisting as they should and Wylfrael is struggling to figure out what is happening. (Please don't ask me to pronounce his name.) Anyway, Torrance, is a kidnapped Canadian astrophysicist brought to his home planet by the United States Army or some human government force to study alien planets for resources. Abducted by your own race. So shady but am I surprised? NO man is to be trusted.
Anyway, Torrance and Wylfrael end up learning about each other while chilling in a Crystal Tree palace. Wylfrael is trying to be all tough but he can't because he is secretly *obsessed* with Torrance. There was a part that felt like Mormons doing that weird soaking thing. There is a marriage of convenience. A unicorn-type animal. A lovely giant dog. Some weird stone god ball and some crazy prophetic twists from a spider lady. This book was pretty intense and fulfilled my sci-fi dreams but it took a minute for my brain to absorb the material. Oh, there is knotting which our poor girl Torrance had no clue about. (Laughs maniacally) Read this book if you are interested in the sci-fi part of sci-fi romance.
I stumbled across Ursa Dax and her romance series after finishing up reading books from another author. I wanted something a bit different from normal romance and decided that Sci Fi romance was the go because anything can go. Let me tell you I really enjoyed them and read the whole series one straight after the other, Alien men in all sizes and shapes, all growly and protective of their mates was just what I needed. Of course, it takes a while for the abducted Human women to come around but that is just part of the fun. Ursa’s world building makes it so easy to imagine the world she has created, and the characters are so easy to fall in love with. If you love Sci Fi romance that is messy, sexy, a little alien erotica and fated mates then Ursa is your gal. I was not disappointed, and I know you won’t be either.
I am really surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The pacing was good (until the end), the characters were believable (not insta-love even though it’s a fated mates book/series), and the story was interesting. The MFC actually had a healthy dose of fear and self preservation that I feel like is lacking in many alien romances that are first contact. Yeah. I hope the rest of the series is this good going forward The last 5% of the book was a little all over the place and even though it answered many questions it wasn’t a very satisfying way to end the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this perfect opening to the new stone god series and I cannot wait to see where miss Ursa Dax takes us next!
I was lucky enough to get this as an ARC and was expecting more of the same vibes I usually get from the Sea Sand books. What we did get was so much more! This was definitely a new twist on the fated mates trope that had me sitting on the edge of my seat for hours. I came to love both MCs and the worldbuilding was so good.
It is obvious to me that the writer has stepped up her game with this series, both with storytelling, twists and worldbuilding. This book had so much more than her usual sweet and spicy, and a lot shorter books. Don't get me wrong, the Sea Sand warriors are at the top of my list still.
This first book in the series gave us so many questions and a lot of answers but those answers honestly opened up even more questions and opportunities and I am really looking forward to see where this is going. It was nice reading an alien romance that managed to take me by surprise so many times. Thank you!
I DEVOURED the ARC for this (thanks for much to Ursa Dax for the ARC too!)
What can I say? This is truly a new start for Dax's alien series, and I'm so excited by the direction it's going in. Because of COURSE there were other ships with other abducted women! And of course there are other planets! And just the wide open potential of the world that is being built here makes me giddy with possibilities.
The story itself goes hard. I think just like any first book in a series, this book balances all the new lingo and world building with the actual couple and relationships pretty well. The plot also goes there, like gets pretty dark in a way that was gutsy. Really, the story was great but the real 5 stars for me is the world that is being built out. Literally so excited for the other stone sky gods and other planets like there's so many possibilities ahhhh!!!
10 stars *** Phenomenal! I am absolutely crazy about this story! Epic alien fantasy romance, with deep characters, meaningful plotline, and tons of steam.. Impossible to put down!
To say that I was over the moon excited to receive an ARC for this book is an understatement! If you've read the Fated Mates of the Sea Sand Warlords series by Ursa Dax, then you will absolutely love Alien God! While this book was a little more in depth than the Sea Sand Warlords series, it ended up being a phenomenal read and one of my top favorites of this year (as well as my favorite book by Ursa yet)!
Easily a 5 star read, this book was full of worldbuilding that leaves you wanting to be whisked away and had a slow burn romance that leaves your heart melting by the end. This book was full of delicious spice, a few laughs and many magical moments. I absolutely loved Wylf and Torrance together, as well as the side characters!
If you've read The Winter King by CJ Wilson and loved it, then Alien God is the book for you! I found that Alien God was reminiscent of The Winter King with the relationship dynamics. You're basically just swapping a fantasy world, a king and magic for an Alien God, an alien world and his immortal powers.
So I really enjoyed it. She almost got me to cry a few times. I thought there was some repetitive aspects that could have been done better and the 180 was a bit too much bc the real estate was there to do more battle between FMC and MMC. But originally I thought this was her dragon alien people 😭😭😭 so I was confused but it’s ursa so you know you got a good thing coming either way. So when I realized it wasn’t I was like alllll right alll right gimme gimme something new from your brain. So honestly I just knocked off a star for the 2 issues other than that it’s brilliant as always.
4.5 ⭐️ ARC • Gonna be a long review but I make no apologies, I must sing Queen Ursa Dax’s praises.
I have yearned for this ARC for SO. LONG. The hints of the stone sky gods in her Sea Sands books had me very intrigued & I was definitely not disappointed. The world-building? Impeccable. Ursa has a great way of writing very vibrant, intriguing worlds & cultures without making you feel like you are getting a textbook-info dump. The Stone Sky Gods are different than any other alien romance I have read (and I have read many lol) & I am really excited that we will be getting so many different worlds for each god.
I was laughing & cheering for & yelling at Torrance & Wylfrael in equal measure. Their banter & dumbass fronting was top notch, even when it was frustrating. We got “annoyances-to-lovers,” marriage of convenience, fated mates, and *chefs kiss* impeccable spicy scenes, as always. I also appreciate that Ursa doesn’t shy away from the realities & physical logistics of the spicy scenes — personally, I think that adds so much to the world itself & to the character’s relationship.
I love that Torrance is an astrophysicist & I love that Ursa always gives her FMCs a full background story & profession that’s more than just details, but actually central to the character’s story. Also, I would die for Brekken, I love our space dog. I love the side-characters and how they add to the story and are not just window-dressing for scenes. I love the hints of political intrigue & underlying plot too!
I am frothing at the mouth for the next Stone Sky Gods books. I am so soft for Skalla & Suvi already and I need their full story like I need air. I also cannot wait to read about Scaedulyr & Marta, I hope she gives him absolute hell. I need Maerwynne to get a happy ending too, I only knew him for a handful of scenes but I am already hardcore rooting for him.
Once again, going on vibes & my enjoyment alone, this book is a 5 out of 5 stars. I only give it a 4.5 in my review because that’s how I differentiate between the couples that **hit different** in the series. If Torrance & Wylf are one of those couples, I will change it to reflect that. I will, however, continue to recommend Ursa Dax’s books until I perish. If you like these kind of fun KU books, you need to read these.
𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖/𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: We finally meet the Stone Sky God from the Sea Sand Warlords series! Wylfrael is free! And he's a total babe.
Wylf is everything I love in a starchy hero who presents the most assholey front but is filled with warm gooey marshmallows inside. He's hot and stoic and delicious! I'm obsessed with him.
Torrance is a wild mix of stubborn mouthy hellcat and easy-to-laugh sweetness. She's kind, caring, and for awhile is a bit confused with her true feelings towards Wylf. She has has a lot to work through at first but she has her sexy alien jailer to keep her on her toes!
Wylf is just as equally confused about his feelings for this weak little human. He automatically sees her as the enemy and treats her like it, and in return Torrance goes into self-preservation protect mode. There's a bit of an unsurety between them with no help coming from the language barrier.
There's a little bit of fear as Torrance tries to get an understanding of this alien captor of hers but that quickly shifts as she realizes she's safe with him, even if he is the universe's biggest D bag. (Well, he seems that way anyways. 😉)
This is a gorgeously yummy enemies-to-lovers slow burn that enfolds during the first bit, which then turns into a marriage of convenience, which then turns into a "we're still not friends but let's have benefits"... which thennn turns into a "holy crap why have we been ignoring our feelings this whole time!?". TRUE LOVE HAPPY EVER AFTER.
Don't worry, the slow burn only lasts so long. There's payoff. Very... VERY... nice payoff. 😏
The relationship dynamic was SUPERB. The world building and set up for more stories was so detailed and well done. This is a fully rounded full length book with all the bits and baubles, and all the feels. You get everything!
I loved it. I knew I'd love it. I always love Ursa's stories. And I'll love the next one!
Thank you once again for another amazing ARC Ursa, I can't wait for release day!
It would be a lie to say that I didn’t miss our regular Sea Sand aliens a bit, but this was also really, really nice. I just adore Ursa Dax’s writing – and this book was even a good 150 pages longer than her other ones!
Usually, I don’t tend to enjoy the first books in alien romance series as much just because there’s so much world building that needs to get done which can be a bit exhausting to deal with when you just want to read something fun. But I found myself rather intrigued by the Stone Sky Gods lore (especially by whatever is up with Rúnwebbe??). I also quite liked Torrance and Wylfrael’s dynamic (broody heroes for the win!). I did find parts of the book a bit rushed and others too drawn out, but I’m sure the pacing will only improve the further we get into the series.
Will I ever prefer this series to the first one? Eh, probably not. However, I still cannot wait to get my hands on the next instalment! Meanwhile, I will try to wait patiently for new stories from our favourite sand planet… 🥹
Thank you Ursa for the ARC, I thoroughly enjoyed the start of this new series and it’s easily my favourite of Ursa’s books so far!
The main character of this book was briefly mentioned in books 10 and 14 of the Sea Sand Warlords series. You can definitely start this series without reading Sea Sands first, but I would recommend starting there so you get context of the previous mission.
The world building and story was set up wonderfully and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes. I enjoyed the slow burn and the pacing of the book, I felt as though there was a realistic timeframe for the character development and it didn’t feel rushed at any point. I loved the relationships between the side characters and felt immersed with the descriptions of the environment and the surrounding world.
If you are looking for a new alien series and like the fated mate trope that Ursa’s books follow, I highly recommend you pick this up!
This is an arc review and my honest opinion. New series debut from one of my favorite alien romance author. It takes place on a different planet/world than her sea sand warlords but in the same world.
Torrance along with many women was abducted from earth by the US government to study and take from this world. That was a fun way to go about it since it's usually aliens who take humans.
There was so much world building especially in the first half of the book and I hate to say it but it was too much for me. I feel like we didn't get enough character development because of it. I wanted to love it but it was a looong book and I got lost in the different descriptions. Second half was much better since we got more in depth with the characters. Also this was definitely more of an enemies to lovers situation and I like my aliens to worship the female they're fated to, so that didn't help me connect to the characters.
I was looking forward to this release and it did not disappoint.
The world building was excellent. Those of us who are regular readers of scifi romance are by now well acquainted with planets filled with ice or sand. This introduced us to something different, more akin to fantasy romance - a world where humans, mages and gods exist; where trees are made of crystal; and of course, where our MFC lives in a castle. You remember that it's scifi only because "spaceships" and "Earth" receive honorable mentions every now and then.
The MFC is an astrophysicist deployed by Earth's military (against her will) to explore new planets. She and the crew land up on the MMC's planet. The MMC is incensed, uses various superpowers (I loved that he had these!) to decimate the military, and proceeds to abduct the MFC.
This was a delicious slow burn and I loved how protective the MMC was of the FMC. The chemistry between the two was great, and the tension was palpable. The "beauty and the beast" elements are all present (though the MMC is not "beast"like in appearance) - the MFC lives like a Queen while held "in captivity", gets along well with the castle staff, is adored by all the animals and there's a giant library (obviously).
There is a marriage of convenience proposed, which in itself was relatively short lived - the characters went from "fake marriage for our individual gains" to the "I love you"s pretty quickly. It wasn't clear to me what led to the change of heart.
I also felt that there was a missed opportunity with the FMC. As an astrophysicist, one would assume she would be curious about what lies beyond this alien planet, but she spends her time like a heroine in a medival romance - working in the kitchen, painting, playing with the dog, planning her sham wedding etc. There are some plot devices set up that were trying to do more, but the focus was more on the romance than on the FMC's interests. The questions she asks the MMC were primarily for the reader's benefit, for expository info. No making plans to explore new worlds together, or make new discoveries and so on, apart from the occasional, "I should write a paper on that!".
There were a bunch of other characters introduced, to set up for the rest of the series. They all seemed compelling, and I'm eagerly waiting to read the next book!
