When the American Civil War breaks out, three young people--a farm boy who is an aspiring writer, a recently orphaned young girl, and a secretly educated slave boy--find that their lives are changed forever
Lee Roddy's journalism career began as a radio drama script writer. He has been a newspaper and radio broadcast executive with experience in advertising agencies and public relations. His award-winning newspaper was sold in 1973, and he is presently a full-time Christian writer. On the West Coast he writes and edits for prominent Christian leaders. He has taught many writing courses including sessions at Mount Herman Christian Writers Conference and Biola College. He is the author of numerous books and his published items number in the thousands both for secular and Christian publications. As a lifelong history buff he has written hundreds of newspaper columns on the subject. For several years he wrote and narrated the radio series "Your American Heritage." Mr. Roddy is a graduate of Los Angeles State College and lives in California with his wife near Disneyland. He has two grown children.
The first book of the "Between Two Flags" series sets the stage for the first battles of the Civil War, as anger turns into gunfire across America.
The story features 3 different kids, so that the reader can see the various perspectives of the war, which is pretty cool. It has solid Christian morals weaved into the story easily.
Perfect for tweens or young teens, but anyone might enjoy it.
Great children's book with interesting history like many of Lee Roddy's books. I like that her main and supporting characters are normal and flawed, yet learn and grow. Too often Christian fiction has wishy-washy characters and she doesn't.
I read this whole series when I was a kid, and loved it. Centers on three characters during the civil war: Emily, a well-off union sympathizer, Gideon, a poor southerner, and Nat, a slave who dreams of freedom. The three storylines weave together seamlessly, mixing history and adventure. Great reading for both boys and girls (my brother struggled with reading, and he loved these books as much as I did).
A very good read of three views on the Civil War; this book is written through the eyes of Emily, a teen aged abolitionist who is living with her southern, slave holding relatives, Nat, a slave bent on running away, and Gideon, the second oldest of a family of southern 'dirt farmers'. I found this book had an interesting perspective on all sides of the war.
I was absolutely taken by this wonderful book! I read this story as a child and became completely enthralled in the Civil War from then on. I also enjoy the spiritual aspect of the story. The historical fiction through several different perspectives creates a wonderful scope for what people (and children as well) went through during this time period!
