Rate this book
Adrian Howell carries a dark secret: one that could save the world from psionic domination. But this secret must be kept even from his allies. As the Angels make their final push to end their 700-year war with the Guardians and set their sights on the rest of humanity, Adrian's small band of freedom fighters must find its way through a maze of betrayal and deceit, and somehow restore the balance of power before it is too late. And yet, as the war approaches its tipping point, the greatest battle Adrian faces now is not one that is fought with psionics, but deep within the confines of his own scarred heart. For even in the unlikely event that Adrian succeeds in his mission, the price of victory might not only be his life, but his very soul...

"Guardian Angel" is the fifth and final book of the Psionic Pentalogy. What a wild ride!

I very much enjoyed books one and two. By the second half of the third book, "Lesser Gods" I was absolutely hooked. This is where the heart palpitations and restless nights started for me. Talk about gripping.

I intended on reading Guardian Angel as slowly as I possibly could as to prolong the inevitable end. Turned out to be impossible. I literally couldn't put the book down. I remember I was somewhere around 80% through with the book and had NO idea how the author was going to pull off a satisfying conclusion. I held my breath so frequently; I'm actually surprised I didn't pass out! Remarkably (and a little unbelievably), the conclusion to the Psionic Pentalogy is as solid as it is satisfying.

Go read book #1, Wild-born. Do it. And then read The Tower. Just whatever you do-don't stop there.

A fast-paced story that I couldn't put down. The end game went down with a sad fizzle instead of a bang. I love that the author has an afterwards that explains some of the choices he makes in the book, including the way it ended. While I understand his purpose, I still can't help feeling that the pentalogy built up to big, final twisty action scene and didn't deliver. Additionally, I know the author wanted to keep it real and avoid the fairy tale ending that just wouldn't occur in real life. But most people read books to get away from reality and want to feel good when they're done; after all the sacrifices our main characters make, we want the universe to balance things out and give them a flurry of good things. Still, I thought this was a great ride and worth reading.

Taken from my Amazon.com review:
Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions below are entirely my own.

And here we are, on the last page. Well, the first of the last pages. “Guardian Angel” follows “The Quest” and is the final book in Adrian Howell’s PSIONIC Pentalogy. I highly recommend reading the other four books before this one – not only are they entirely worth reading, but you may be lost on several points in this book if you don’t. The author will put some effort into catching people up, but it’s really more of a refresher for those who space out their reading. This review may contain spoilers for the previous books, so if you'd rather skip it (or my ridiculously long reviewing style!) head on down to the last full paragraph, my "bottom line". It'll be safe there, honest!

“Guardian Angel” starts out a little while after “The Quest”, likely in the interest of moving plot along – the author has learned, over the course of the books, what to keep and what to cut, and it shows. Compared to the lagging pacing of “The Tower”, “Guardian Angel” shows remarkable improvement. I personally stayed up all night to finish it, because I couldn’t bear to wait to learn what happened next – and I haven’t done that since the last Harry Potter book! The author has mastered mixing an intense, engrossing plot with tight pacing and edge-of-your-seat excitement, creating an unforgettable finale.

Prior books have had ups and downs in the pace, as respite followed battle creating a marked rhythm in the stories. However, in “Guardian Angel” even the light respites are tense and emotionally-packed, as it feels from the start that everything is on the line, and the feeling just keeps growing.

As for our favorite characters, they must make their exits, whether gracefully or gruesomely (or both!) I will not say. However, I can reassure readers that the author has ensured that each character makes an end that is worthy of them, their journey, and the story as a whole. It was hard to close the book and say goodbye – and that says more about this series than any review I could write.

The language and wording continue to shine through as meritorious distinctions that will follow “Mr. Howell” throughout his career. His ability to craft complex ideas and emotions with succinct wording has been praised in my four prior reviews, and I’ll say it again here. His style may well be the highest point of a book full of high points.

As to the editing and layout of the book, I received a .pdf for review, so I can't speak to layout of the Kindle Edition in practice, but it certainly looked good in theory. In "Guardian Angel” I noticed no particular errors, though of course I am no editor. The author is continually proof-reading though, and constantly refining his work – an admirable quality and one that entirely benefits the consumer.
So, so long Adrian, Alia, Cindy, Terry, Ed Regis, James, Mark, the Historian, and all those who played their parts fantastically along the journey. It’s been a blast.

The bottom line is that "Guardian Angel” is a mighty, worthy finale to the PSIONIC Pentalogy. It was tough knowing that the reading was at an end, but an enjoyable experience all the same. That said, Adrian and co. have grown up fast – this book’s audience may well need to be beyond the first teenage years. Darkness, violence, and even death abound, and not everyone gets their happy ending. It’ll be a tough read for the youngest crowd. That said, it’s not much darker than book four, so if you enjoyed that, and the prior books you'll enjoy this one. If you’re no fan of the genre though, this isn’t exactly going to change your mind.

Adrian Howell

I read about 6 to 7 books a day. For the first 27 years of my life my reading abilities were limited due to epilepsy. I had about 200 seizures a month until I was 27. I was then put on another medication to assist my first medication in getting these episodes under control. When that happened I went into overdrive with reading. I can now read about 3500 pages a day. When I got Wildborn from Bookbub, about half way through the book I was addicted so I went and purchased the entire series that day. I was so relieved when I saw that there were 4 for books to go with it. I prolonged the pace of my reading so I could enjoy it even longer. Adrian Howell, you are one of the best writers in this world and I encourage you to keep writing. It's writers like you that keep my love for reading alive. I will most definitely pass this series along to every reader I know. I'm about to start reading it aloud to my mother, who no longer has the abilities to read due to age. I will read it to any person who wants to hear it just so I can experience this adventure again and again. You wrote it perfectly and I only wish it would continue. All of your choices to write and release this series in the manner that you did are truly ingenious. I made it last an entire week instead of the day that it would have taken. I'm going to look for all books written by you and keep reading. If there are no other books yet I will just read this series over and over. Thank-you so much Adrian for the experience you have given me. Yours truly, Jerry William Danielson

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Absolutely thrilled. This book is the most action packed book I have ever read and that would include the Harry Potter series! I was so into this book I finished it in 2 days! It was intriguing similar to the other books in the series, extremely descriptive, and kept me hungry for more. Just when you think the book is at the turning point, there’s a plot twist and everything you thought you knew about it pops up like 5 chapters later. I would give it 7 stars if I could. This book is perfect for young adult readers! Though this book does have a bit more bloodshed than the last and may be inappropriate for some readers, so I strongly suggest young readers have parental guidance before reading.

I read the last half of this book last night..starting around 10 and finishing this morning around 230 AM. The previous books are to blame for nights with little sleep.

I got book #l on discount that I discovered through Bookbub. AS soon as I finished it I had to buy the rest of the series.

The author mentions in the afterword that he eventually elected to release the entire series in one go and I'm glad he did. This allowed for a nicely polished story that I enjoyed reading.

My favorite stories are those that take place in my world but flipped into the realm of magically possibilities. if you are in this boat with me, then I think you'll emit thawed storied too.

Adrian, Terry, Alia and Cindy, I'm glad you have met you.

Guardian Angel: Book five (PSIONIC Pentalogy #5) by Adrian Howell is an excellent series that got me hooked and I couldn't stop until I was finished. I read the final installment straight through. The war between the psionic factions, the God Slayers and now the Guardian Angels has heated up to the boiling point. Everyone is after Adrian and Adrian has his own personal mission. I thoroughly enjoyed the series and recommend it to everyone. I look forward to more books by this author. Once you start this pentalogy, be prepared to get involved as you won't want to put it down. If you want non stop action, this is the series for you. I personally would like to see another volume in this series.

I wanted to hold off on a written review until I'd finished the Pentalogy. This will be a short, spoiler free review. While I enjoyed the world the author created, I felt he had troubles with pacing throughout the entire series. At times through all five books, the story dragged and seemed to go nowhere. While I understand it was world building and a bit of exposition, it was a little hard to slog through at times. Also, one thing that really bugged me was the author's inability to use another word than "wry" or "wryly". It seemed every other paragraph, someone "gave a wry smile" or "answered wryly". It actually became quite annoying.

The story as a whole was good, not great. I felt a bit cheated at the end though. All five books were pointing to a dramatic climax and the author paraphrased the events instead of going into detail. For five books I've been reading and anticipating the inevitable and the author took it away with a simple sentence. Book three had a similar instance where the dramatic conclusion chapter was skipped in favor of an afterward. This came off as a bit of a cheat and disingenuous to the reader.

I'm having a hard time thinking if I would recommend this book. I loved the characters and the world but felt aggravated at the author's choices. At the end of the day I could recommend it if you want to read a world filled with lesser gods.

This 5 book series was one of the best finds I have mad on pixel of ink. The characters were well developed, and the story was excellent. I found myself looking forward to reading each night, and when I got to the last book.....I was torn . Part of me wanted to not have the book end...and part of me wanted to see how it ended. The layers of this story, and the subtle humor in the strangest places....makes this an EXCELLENT choice.
Adrian is a Psionic....and the story evolves around him growing up, wars between different groups of psionic. (I found the similarities to the crazy world we are in now, similar) .

The author is passionate about what he does, and the result (without telling you much)....is a series to be savored and enjoyed.

Well the 5 books were very well written in my opinion and the ending was great. I am not sure if Adrian Howell will continue but I will be looking to see. If you read this series be sure you start with book 1 and go straight through to number 5. The series builds very well book by book and the action changes in each so I did not reach a saturation point during my reading. I did have to let my bias against the concept of the characters powers go but the writing made it easy. The series was great and the ending left me thinking of the possibilities it left me with.

I read this series back in April this year, and it is the best piece of fiction since Harry Potter. Yeah no joke, it’s that good, also I read the iBooks version and despite the illustrations giving it a ‘safe and childish’ approach. Good god it’s very mature, I honestly think people are sleeping on this gem. I would love to see a new book but this series is a just constant suspense and action.

If you are a fan of psychics in media especially DC & MCU please read this series. I promise you will love it.

Conflicted

I enjoyed the series but at times was overwhelmed by the need to kill off loved ones and the religious moralizations leaving nothing but emptiness.
So many twists and turns that at times did not add to my enjoyment. Since my preference is for a more uplifting read, I was happy to find an ending.

Overall, a great, emotional ending to the series, though the end of the book itself felt very abrupt and anti-climactic.

This series is one of the best--and one of the most heart-wrenching--series I've ever read.
It ranks right up there with Harry Potter. Yes, it's that amazing!
This final novel in the series took me months to read, because I knew that in every chapter something horrible would happen to a characters I loved, and I had difficulty facing that.
Still, it's one of the best series I've ever read, and I highly recommend it!
