A Fight for the Crown… Betrayed and exiled from the Mercian throne, Norah Andell has survived against those who wish to kill her. Now, she’ll do whatever it takes to reclaim her crown and take back everything she’s lost. But as her love for Mikael, the Shadow King, grows stronger, and with the risk of losing him to the seers’ prophecies ever greater, fate tests the limits she’s willing to go and what she’s willing to sacrifice.
Even More to Lose… When allies become enemies, the future of Kharav hangs in the balance. Intent on reclaiming Mercia for Norah, Mikael pushes for a risky war and faces the wrath of his disapproving Kharavian nobles, who are willing to do almost anything to rid themselves of the North Queen, including crowning a new king. What’s more, with his lord commander gone, Mikael stands alone as he fights to keep his hold on the crown.
A Fight Against Fate… Rael’s King Cyrus grows more powerful by the day under the banner of his righteous cause, amassing an army no kingdom can stand against, and he is fueled by dark magic and a festered vengeance. As he enters the fold and new political alliances are formed, the four kingdoms spiral toward another Great War, a war that Mikael knows will bring his own end. To escape the seers’ vision, Mikael must sacrifice the one thing he loves above all else—Norah. But he can’t, and he won’t. In a fight against fate, Mikael’s time is running out.

"An epic tale displaying the best kind of fantasy." - BLUEINK REVIEW
My blood still boils when I think of all the things I hated in this book. Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazingly written with beautiful battle strategies and epic show down. I also love how much the book made me feel. But..
(Minor spoilers)
I didn’t like Norah one bit. She was always making outrageous decisions and the one that pissed me off the most was about the memory in the wild. Like she could’ve have done that for Mikael as he did everything for her. I also HATED Katya’s decision to keep her son’s paternity a secret. Like girl, they all needed that in their grief and in whatever way you look that decision is wrong. Especially as she didn’t inform the father before he died.
Yeah, I disliked that character in the both previous book but when the author killed him off in it I was so freaking mad. Give that character a break he suffered so much and you just don’t let him know that he was going to be dad and then killed him. This book unlocked another of my least favourite trope- killing important characters unnecessarily! And let’s not even start with Tahlia’s decision regarding her son. Like, what is the problem with all these great ladies when it comes to their personal life?
I took a couple of days break to write this review so I’ll cool down, turns out I’m still stinking mad.
Soren and philip was too cute and I loved him in this book so much. His character growth is amazing. I liked Lucien too. And saw that twists coming in the second book itself. I just wish Mikael got a little more importance in the book. He deserved it.
I really wanted to love this series. The first book hooked me and had all the makings of a great fantasy series - FMC with lost memories, a forgotten lover, a villain who's not so villainous, court politics, a touch of magic. But as this series dragged on it just lost steam.
Honestly, Norah is the worst. She's sooooooo emotional and makes the stupidest fucking decisions because of it. Like, we stan a drama queen....but maybe not an actual, overly dramatic queen. Her obsession with Alexander is INFURIATING. She never shuts up about him!! For someone who lost all her memories, her devotion to him makes absolutely no sense. She's supposedly so in love with Mikail but is not faithful to him. Mikail should have dropped her ass 1000x over for how irrational she is, but this poor guy just accepts that he has to "make room" for Alexander in Norah's heart. NO, BRO.
Our MMCs are not that much better. We don't really know all that much about Mikail, if you think about it. He's just...angry, and then in love with Norah. And Alexander's entire personality is just "I'm in love with Norah, and I must do what's right for Mercia". This was fine in the first book, but by the end of book 3 neither MMC developed any further and that was frustrating.
Other things that straight up pissed me off ****SPOILERS****: - Uh, Alexander just fucking dies? AND NORAH STILL WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT HIM. - Norah never regains her memories? This was such a critical plot in book 1, but then they finally meet the Wild chicks and they're just like "sorry sis, they gone forever". WHAT???? - The magic system made no sense, nor was it really developed to make sense. - The Lucien arc was like a dramatic soap opera.
Honestly, I would have preferred a whole story around Soren and Phillip. Why did we have to wait until book 3 to rush through their romance?? When you look at all 3 books collectively, their story was such a random MM plot that probably didn't need to be there, but I'm so glad it was because I found myself wanting to read their chapters instead of the rest of this.
Her writing is exactly what I love, full drama and tension between Norah and Mikael. AND Soren, OMG, I love him. I loved the relationship that developed between Soren and Norah. That relationship was so heartwarming with all high stake politics. These characters felt real, their flaws and struggles, their strengths and love. Overcoming their battles and trusting felt real. These are the kind of characters I cry over.
Now, it took me months to read. I savored this book and enjoyed every page, I struggled thinking, "I don't want it to end, I can't say goodbye." Some books I devour and others like this one I need to process as I read, probably because I cried so much. If I say why I'm giving away spoilers so read it and enjoy the beautiful story of Norah, Alexander, Mikael, and Soren.
I was very excited for this series because the first book was really good. I couldn’t put it down, but I am heartbroken because this is not what I wanted to happen. As I kept reading I wanted someone to jump out and say “just kidding! that’s not what happened!” I am ~frustrated~
Finally concluded this saga! This book honestly was such a vibe change from the other two and it felt very drawn out. I may have felt that way because I read them so close together, but I lost a lot of steam on this one. I did however love how this ended! I look forward to future books in this series!
"But we’ve set things right, you and I. And now we’re the strongest we’ve ever been. Together."
Nicola knows how to write a captivating, but heart wrenching trilogy! I'm so lucky to have found this trilogy as I found North Queen through Netgalley. I was really stressing in the last 10% because I was so scared of how Nicola was gonna finish the story off! She couldn't have ended it better, It was honestly amazing! All three books have been five stars for me, I haven't been captivated in a fantasy trilogy or series for a long time, so I'm glad I've been able to find another one that is memorable and gives all the emotions and lets you feel all the feels! I hope we can have more works from Nicola in the future! I'd love to see what else she can write for us🤭
“I’m queen of Mercia and salara of Kharav, with or without a husband. If someone wants my crown, they’ll have to pry it from my dead fingers, if they still have a head to wear it.” We love a badass Queen 👑
"The past three years of his life had been the best he’d ever had. Even if it was all that fate would give him, he considered himself fortunate." And a sentimental king 👑
what an ending to a series that took me completely by surprise. I seriously couldn’t set any of these books down. The world, characters, relationships, politics - just everything was so freaking good.
I do wish we got an epilogue or at-least some post ~main traumatic event~ but overall happy w the ending
now idk what to do with myself I wish this wasn’t the end 🥹
The last 150 pages of this book saved it from a sub par review. The ending was fantastic after I was literally dragged through the trenches in order to get answers to all my questions. Soren will be my fav character forever but Adrain gave him a run for his money in the last book of this trilogy. No where near as good as the first two books but I will accept fate 😉
Ok the ending really saved this one because I could not stand the 👻☠️ plot line. But this one has some really good surprises and twists that I did not seeing coming! The battle was intense and I was on the edge of my seat 💺 and the 🪢 idea was so good! Overall an ok read but the ending made it up for it 🫶
Such a great ending for an amazing series. This trilogy really won me over from the beginning and filled my post-Sarah j mass hangover. Definitely recommend and will reread this over and over.
This is not a very deep series at all…and I mean at all there’s magic but we know nothing about it and BOO spooky dark magic that we also learn nothing about whatever I figured this series was more for the vibes than the actual writing I won’t waste my breath on everything I want to say but to sum everything up I am positive that the villain is actually the good guy here…how the author even made out the protagonists to be good after hearing his backstory is beyond me
1 star for how evil the protagonists are for allowing sl*very and thinking they were righteous I really was holding out for a redemption arc something!???? but no…
This was so silly like this book resolved itself FAR too fast in fact this entire series resolved itself too fast. I think I am just traumatized by SJM but it was too convenient how it all worked out. That said I did love the characters in this series, I really hope the next book is Soren and Phillip’s full story. I also HATE that we didn’t get an epilogue
I started this book the second I finished book 2 – Shadow Queen.
Norah has been betrayed by her own council and people – she has been exiled from Mercia and her throne. So, she does the only thing she can do – fights to get back what is rightfully hers – she goes to war for Mercia and her throne.
Mikael goes to war with Norah for her throne – yet these risks invite more wrath and ill will towards himself and his queen by the nobles of Kharav – still unwilling to believe that Mercia, a long time enemy, could be an actual ally against a common enemy.
Norah and Mikael win back the throne of Mercia but at a cost neither of them could have contemplated – Alexander, the Bear, is dead. The grief tears Norah apart and widens the divide between herself and Mikael.
Yet things are made worse when vials of blood begin to be mysteriously left for Norah. Norah uses this blood to communicate with the spirit of Alexander – or at least that's what she is led to believe. Soren and Mikael know she is being led astray by a mysterious force at work – determined to hurt Norah and use her in the war.
But if Kharav and Mercia – and Mikael and Norah – are to survive this war and thwart fate – Norah needs to realises she is being used by someone who is foe not friend and certainly not her Alexander. Besides losing her kingdom, Norah risks losing Mikael and all those she holds dear if she cannot see what is being done. So desperate to thwart the threads of fate – Norah is weaving herself into the very story she seeks to escape....
“War Queen” is the momentous ending to this series. It had, or at least what I view as, the key elements to an amazing fantasy series – heroism, betrayal, epic world building and some wonderfully written characters with great interactions and individual story arc all interwoven beautifully with the overlying story. As heartbreaking and frustrating as it was to read it was also great to see the battle with Norah and the bloody visions and the struggles the other characters (Soren and Mikael) went through to help her – made for some really good reading. The ending, while sad that the overall storyline came to an end – was just brilliant and had me crying. I don’t want to give it away, but it was just right and perfect. I am sad to see the end of this series but now I am also curious to see what other works this talented author has to offer.
Omg I absolutely BINGED this series! It starts off with the main FMC, Norah, waking up in the woods with no memory of who she is, her past, or how she got there. I was immediately hooked!! Turns out she was the heir to the throne of Mercia and once she returned home with the help of her handsome guard and old friend, Alexander, she had to navigate ruling a kingdom at war with no memories and no idea of who to trust.
The world building and political intrigue was so well done in this series. It was easy to follow and interesting. The use of multi POV allowed for me to feel for multiple characters deeply. The characters were complex, some morally grey, and all flawed in their own ways. They made mistakes and the way they navigated them felt real and relatable.
The romance was 👩🍳💋! There was major Daenerys and Khal Drogo vibes in the first book (which I absolutely loved 😮💨) and there were multiple romances within the series with the different side characters which was a lot of fun to read through the multi POV. Loved them all! 🥹
I ended up caring for so many characters even though they were all so different. One in particular wormed his way into my heart and I don’t want to let him go lol 😂. I am so excited that there will be more books to come in this world and hope I get to see more of him.
I highly recommend this series if you love: ⚔️political intrigue ⚔️memory loss ⚔️enemies to lovers ⚔️love triangle ⚔️found family ⚔️flirty training scenes ⚔️epic battles ⚔️hurt/comfort
Whew. War Queen was a ride… but not the smooth kind. For about 85% of the book, I honestly had no clue where things were going. Plots started, fizzled, got dropped, then popped up again like “surprise!” — except not in a good way. It felt less like a finale and more like I was reading someone’s very long, very chaotic rough draft.
Then came the last 15%. Finally! Action, drama, payoff — but it all happened so fast it was like the literary version of a too-quick orgasm. Sure, technically satisfying… but mostly just frustrating and leaving me with a whole lot of “wait, that’s it??” vibes.
And even after all that rushing, there were still dangling threads and unanswered questions. For the last book in the series, that’s a tough pill to swallow.
I wanted epic, I got messy. Entertaining in bursts, but definitely not the finale I was hoping for. Still worth reading the series though!!!
This is my favorite series of the year. And one of my favorite series of all time. The work Nicola put into this series, story, characters and world is evident on every page.
It’s been about a month since I finished the Crowns trilogy, and I am still thinking about these characters on a daily basis. My love for Soren (& his mystery man), Mikael and Norah knows no bounds. Long may they reign.
War Queen is going to blow your fracking minds.
"I know you don't belong to me. Your loyalty, your devotion to Norah and your king-I would never ask you to betray that. And when you let me touch you, when you let me have you, I see it for exactly what it is. A gift. Thank you for this gift."
This series is rearranging my DNA. I can’t even. The plot, the characters, the world, the magic… I haven’t been this invested in a cast (you heard me, the whole damn cast) of characters since Throne of Glass. And with half the pages! I don’t know how this isn’t the series the entire booktok community is screaming about.
The tension between the main three characters is astronomical, I don’t even know who I’m rooting for anymore. All of them? I mean… and the side characters love interest is even more intoxicating. I’m so in love with everyone it’s ridiculous- I’m stuck in a reader why choose adventure. And the book is strictly, gotta choose.
The politics are so real, the choices are intense, who is right or wrong? When you are forced to view the warring sides from ALLLL perspectives, it’s impossible to know for sure. There are no easy decisions, no happy outcomes, there’s a price to pay and a cost to bear for every alliance, every choice, every relationship and every sacrifice. It’s a lot. And I was here for every single moment.
Bring on the rest!!! This is a top 5 read of 2025.
I -begged- the author for this arc and it did not disappoint 😁 Sooo much happened that I was not expecting.
This is one of the rare cases where everything you think might happen based on the previous books does not happen. I literally never knew what was going to happen next or what direction the author was going to go in so my anxiety was going through the roof.
I read this so quickly because it just grabs you from the start. I felt like I was actually in this world and forgot I was reading.
And the ending 🥹 no spoilers but now I’m in a serious end of a book series depression slump now. I wanted it to keep going forever.
This book series overall was a fast read and I enjoyed it.
But Norah felt like she never grew out, never learned anything. She was imo in love with Alexander to the end. I didn’t feel any love from her towards Mikael at all. Even thought she kept saying she loved him, she never respected him, always lied to him, and made out with her other lover any given time. It felt so weird to me. Even when his life was on the line, she never tried to protect him. She always chose Alexander over him. Always. Even at the very end, she chose to keep her memories of Alexander instead of saving Mikael’s life, which emmare me put down the book for a while lol. If you’re here for the villan gets the fmc troupe, the book doesn’t live up the expectations . Mikael as a character has never shown any development, we need a couple of witnesses whether he was truly the Shadow King because he never has done anything out of ordinary. He was very easygoing with Norah and always complied to her wishes. He was a complete side character. Soren was the best character here. His development was everything. And I feel like all the readers will love in love with him at the end. I’m glad that he was happy at the end of the book. The third book goes every deep into side characters life, love? Sex scenes I’m not sure whether needed were placed in here or there. I had many great expectations for this book. As it had my fav trope which is villan gets the girl, but I received no satisfaction from it. You can read and enjoy without expecting too much. The was strategies etc was very well thought out and planned.

Overall, the whole series almost gets 4 stars, but Norah annoyed me so much throughout all three books that I can't round it up, so 3.5 it is. I kept expecting the love triangle to end, but it remained eternal. With some ridiculous twists.
Norah was so whiny and immature and impulsive. The only time she acted like a queen was when she was in danger or kidnapped. By the end of this last book I couldn't care less if she lived or died. She didn't deserve Mikael or Alexander. But especially not Mikael, that dude would allow her anything and had no spine when it came to her. While he was supposed to come off as understanding and caring, at times he was a pushover and indulgent. While Alexander was there to create drama, weepy times and to be the last corner of that triangle.
The best character was Soren. And when a sociopathic, violent, moody dude is the only option, it says enough about a book. But his evolution in the story was really interesting and I'm so glad he got his HEA. His murderous hearts deserves it.
The magic system was kinda hard to understand and at times didn't make sense. The whole villain twist was ridiculous and hinged on the assumption that no one realized he could still be alive.
I'm going through an awful time in my life at the moment so this series helped me escape a little, so I'm really grateful for that.
I honestly don't know how to feel about this one. At first, I found myself wishing the book would end already, and then I hoped there was more to this series. I even ugly cried in two scenes towards the end.
Sorens' character development was amazing while Mikael's wasn't at all memorable. I wish we could have seen more of him. We got better character development from Cyrus than we did from Mikael. I even found myself rooting for Cyrus at one point. I was actually surprised when we learned Cyrus' real identity, though I kinda saw it coming, just not in the way that I thought. Im glad some of the characters got the closure they deserved. Even though it made me cry
The first book was much better than the second or the third. I feel like there was a bit missing to this one.
**** **** **** SPOILER **** **** ****
Katya should have told Adrian about the baby. Like, come on!! He would have understood. She should have told Norah too this maybe could have brought her some closure. The author really left us hanging there. And even more so with the entire Cyrus and Norah thing. Like, did he have a crush on her, or was he just fond of her as a friend? I mean, we can make our own conclusions, but still.
This book has of the worst MFC I’ve ever read. She was kinda interesting in the first book but then it all goes down from there. Norah was a pain and I almost dnf this book because of her. Everyone is so protective of her. Mikael will sacrifice his kingdom to keep her safe. Alexander is loyal to fault to her. And even Soren went down the rabbit hole at times. Even the villain falls for her!!!! Wtf what is it with this girl. And through all that, Norah does nothing to help any situation. She’s a train wreck, and everyone just wants to watch her with heart eyes as she does more and more damage. I’m sorry I didn’t like this book. The monotonous writing really exhausted me. I hate having to go through pages and pages of boring everyday life and then 2 months pass and nothing really happen. I found myself more interested in the villain of the story, his life seemed something worth reading about. 2 ⭐️ only because I managed to finish, by pretty much just skimming the last 20% of the book
3.5 stars. Again, an improvement to the previous books in the series. Some of the parts of the plot, like the fate and the memory thing still didn’t sit quite right with me. Also I really disliked the time jumps, as sometimes there was no time between chapters, and other times it could have been multiple months, which made the reading experience quite disjointed at times. However, the series was brought to a nice close at the end, and while the writing itself wasn’t the best in my opinion, the plot was still quite good.
