Firefly Effect

For years, tales of the Firefly Man were nothing more than elaborate rumors spread by residents in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Fear gripped her, and silence stole her voice.
All while she watched the boy she was with that night take the fall.

Fourteen years later, Evelyn is nothing more than a shell of her former self.
Her life moves like a clock, from one moment to the next, never a surprise.
Gone are the days of chasing fireflies through the woods.

I'm always on the hunt for a new romantic suspense to obsess over, and this one was a solid romance with some heart-pounding suspense at the end!

The heroine's friend was murdered when she was young, which turned out to be the first kill of a serial killer that was never caught. She's never really recovered from the tragedy and has seen a therapist since. When she goes to her new session 14 years later, her usual therapist is gone and a young, single dad is there to take the job. She's hesitant to open up to this new person in her life, but there's an obvious attraction there. They are trying to unravel the mystery of the killing and trying to stop the serial killer today.

I did enjoy the slow burn romance between the two characters since they had a lot they were both working through. I do think it went from slow burn to love a bit quickly and would have liked to see a bit of development between those two, especially after something was revealed near the end. But those twists were great and a I love a big showdown at the end of a romantic suspense novel. The side characters were great and there were plenty of red herrings to keep us guessing who the killer really was.

This one was definitely engaging and I was glued to the book!

KK Allen has done it again. This book is just everything. Evelyn spends her summers with her Uncle Patrick and every year they go camping to see the fireflies in the small town where she lives. But when she’s 15 years old she finally makes a connection with a fellow out of towner and has her first crush on the older brother of her new friend, tragedy hits and she’s never the same after that. Fast forward 12 years later and we see how much the tragedy had an effect on not only her but the town and everyone who was there during the tragedy. Evelyn is now living in the small town and manages her uncle’s bar when a new therapist comes to town to replace her uncle’s friend who she’s been seeing since she moved in with her uncle at 17. Lincoln is not your regular therapist, he’s melt your under garments with only a smirk type of attractive, a single parent to an adorable little girl making him the shiny new toy all the single and not so single mothers want to get to know. Only Lincoln only has eyes for Evelyn. Evelyn does not make it easy for Lincoln to get to know here but Lincoln also has a hidden agenda for why he wants to get to know her. On top of that, they both feel a connection to each other that they can’t fight. The mystery behind the tragedy that happened in the small town is connected to an old campfire tale that had been told for years and years. Only now it has come full circle and the town is no longer safe, if they were even safe to begin with. Evelyn and Lincoln’s journey gives you all the feels a long with suspense and mystery, plus an adorable little girl that you can’t help but love. This is not only a must read but a you must read now type of book that will forever live rent free in your head. Such an amazing journey you won’t want to end but love even more once you’ve reached the end.

This book 😍

K.K. Allen has delivered another gripping, suspensefully twisted yet sexy story with Firefly Effect that follows Evelyn and Lincoln as they work through her past trauma and connection to a serial killer while also falling in love.

Firefly Effect is kind of similar to K.K. Allen's Waterfall Effect- where the little pieces all start coming and clicking together in ways that you don't expect, and while the characters are referenced here these books are not interconnected making it so that it's a true stand alone.

Normally, I tend to lean more towards rom-coms and lighter stories- but I'm addicted to K.K. Allen's storytelling and this book is exactly why. From the heart stopping prologue to the twists and diversions scattered throughout I hated putting this book down. Evelyn despite her trauma and troubled upbringing is an absolute sweetheart but at the same time she's just kind of going through the motions without forming real connections with the people around her. Then Lincoln Reed came to town and turned her world upside down in more ways than one. Lincoln has this genuineness to his personality that just drew me in but the absolute love and care he radiates when it comes to his daughter Lucy had me in a puddle. And my goodness- Lucy is just a ray of adorable, sweet sunshine that broke up some of the tensions and anxiety that the suspense in the story created.

I was so enamored with the connection between Evelyn and Lincoln- and oh did I have my hopes set on certain plot point coming to fruition but then there were times I wasn't so sure it was going to happen. Lincoln was sweet with Evie but once they crossed the line- he was sexy, bold and confident in a way that drove me crazy 🥵

K.K. Allen did a phenomenal job in keeping me guessing all along the way- there were times that I thought I'd figured it all out but then another twist of information would come along making me second guess it all. When it all comes together though? 🤯 And I couldn't think of it ending any other way now!

Evie has had a hard life, but she won’t let anything get her down. For the past decade and a half she has been in therapy to work on past traumas. Most notably the death of her friend that she found murdered.

Things shake up her world when her longtime therapist up and leaves his practice and a new, very hot therapist comes to town. And when she finds herself wanting to leave therapy anyway, she takes this as a sign.

Now that Lincoln is not going to be her therapist, their attraction and chemistry is shining through. So they allow themselves to have a friends with benefits situation and their chemistry is off the charts! The connection between these two is out of this world.

This book is filled with so many twists and turns. KK Allen does a great job keeping us guessing the entire book! I loved that I wasn’t able to figure out the culprit for a long time while I was reading.

I loved the relationship between Lincoln, his daughter, and Evie. It was so, so special.

From the very beginning, this book had me guessing and I was wrong with every assumption!! Firefly Effect weaved a story of mystery, heartache and romance that made you not only wish that you could undo the past, but proved that sometimes the best things are worth waiting for.

Fourteen years ago Evelyn went through a very traumatic event that changed her life. Still dealing with that trauma as an adult has not only made her wary of certain things, but she chooses to keep herself closed off personally. When the new town's therapist arrives, it sends Evelyn on an unexpected journey of hidden memories, forgiveness and falling in love. But with that comes danger and it's now getting closer than being hidden in the forest.

Firefly-Effect-Collage

I really enjoyed the majority of this story and the setting. I felt like I was a part of the small community and I could visualize everything the characters were describing. I felt the fear and being on edge as we got closer to finding the truth and I loved that it gave me that kind of thrill. I will admit that the first half is a slow burn and it took me a minute to get into but once it picked up, I was hooked.

If you're in the mood for a small town mystery romance that will keep you guessing until the very end, I highly recommend you give this one a try.

Romance and suspense. I did not at ALL guess who the bad guy was. I immediately thought it was one person most of the book!

The Firefly Man was an urban legend told again and again. When Evie was younger, the tales of The Firefly Man interested her. But when The Firefly Man kills her new friend Carly while they are camping, the urban legend has become real.

Years later, Evie is living, but not as she should be. When her long-time therapist drops her onto Dr Lincoln Reed, she's not swayed. Even though he's super handsome. And a fantastic father to his sweetheart of a daughter.

The Firefly Man has returned. It's made Evie question everything. Especially what she knows about him.

If you enjoy romance but with a little bit of suspense, this one is right up your alley. Lincoln is also a great love interest. I love a man who is so caring to the women in his life. He's definitely up there. It's steamy, too. I enjoyed the romance between these, too.

Firefly Effect is K.K. Allen at her romantic suspense best! With twists and turns you never see coming, you’ll fall in love with Dr. Reed and Evelyn while trying to figure out who is haunting their small town. Hands down one of the best books I’ve read this year!

I was lucky enough to beta read this amazing story and I can't get these characters out of my head! I just finished rereading the final edition and I don't know how but I am even more in love with Evelyn, Dr. Reed, and his adorable little girl Lucy!

If you love romantic suspense, small town romance, a strong heroine, and a swoony single dad, don't pass this one up!

Evie Vaughn's life has been anything but charming. She couldn't live up to her parents' expectations, but she had Uncle Patrick to bolster her and lift her up. She's always found solace with Patrick, even after finding her new summer friend Carley unalived. All fingers pointed to her Carley's brother Foster, who was cradling her when authorities came on the scene. He was wrongfully accused.

Things aren't adding up when Lincoln Reed comes to town to take over Dr. Wright's therapy practice. No notice was given and Evie found this to be the sign she needed to quit therapy. Even though Evie didn't want therapy with Lincoln, there's an invisible pull toward him. And then she meets Lincoln's daughter Lucy who loves books just as much as she does. She's triggered when she is near the campground, when she finds a threatening letter, when she feels that something isn't right with her former therapist.

There were so many twists and turns in this book. Every time I thought I figured out who the Firefly Man was, something else happened! This book had me on the edge right until the big reveal...so unexpected yet the clues added up.

I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.

This is one of those books that when you finish, you want to tell everyone to read! It is filled with mystery and suspense, but it is Evelyn's story that has me hooked. I will be re-reading the Firefly Effect.

Evelyn and Lincoln have a rough start, but the connection is there. Her trauma is connected to an unsolved mystery, the kind told at campfires to scare us before bed. We are there for all the twisty, mystery, and suspense the author has shared with us. There is plenty of romance as well, and the balance makes for a page turner.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

I liked this book, but I wouldn’t care to reread it.

Evelyn still lives in the town where she stumbled upon the dead body of her friend. She attends regular therapy sessions, but one day she comes to her appointment and finds Lincoln who informs her that he’s taking over the previous therapist’s position. They spend time together, get to know each other, and along the way they start to uncover secrets.

I liked Evie and Lincoln, and while I’m not sure about , I liked that it was dealt with fairly quickly.

There were some side characters, like Lucy and Francine, who I really liked at the beginning, but it felt like they faded into the background for the rest of the book.

The plot was fine, but I thought that more could have been done because the search/investigation was very vague. The book ends almost straight after the killer is caught, which I didn’t particularly like.

The description seems a bit odd because there are parts that can be interpreted as being correct, but to me (after reading the book), they feel inaccurate or blown out of proportion. For example, I would have thought that “silence stole her voice” meant that Evie became mute, however that’s not true. I guess you could say that the phrase makes sense because . Also, Evie may be a different person and may not be completely fine, but I wouldn’t describe her character as being a “shell of her former self”. Lastly, the description talks about “every new session on Dr. Reed’s couch”, and yet Evie never formally becomes his patient, and they end up just being friends (and then more). Sure, there were times when they would go to his office, but that phrase felt misleading.

While this book was fine, it doesn’t make me want to try other books by this author.

This book is so good! I was drawn to it because it's a single dad romance. Plus both covers caught my eye right away. After reading the blurb I knew I needed to read this one. I couldn't put this book down. Right from the start this book had me on the edge of my seat. Then it pretty much kept me there through out the whole book. The fireflies and then the legend of the Firefly man had me intrigued. Then what that legend led to left me gasping. Hold onto your seats because you are in for once heck of a ride. Evelyn's life forever changed after that night fourteen years ago. It impacted the path her life took and now her life is going to be turned upside down once again. A new therapist is in town and questions swirl. Oh my gosh Lincoln's little girl Lucy is so adorable. She stole my heart right away. One thing that really stayed with me after finishing this one is how Lucy gave the fireflies their magic back. This book delivers on the heart, heat, and suspense. I can't recommend this book enough!!

I found a new favorite author with this book! and yes I can safely say that after only reading this single book! I had a few others by her on my tbr before this, so when I saw that this one was coming out, I knew it was the perfect time. I loved it!

I was very much in the mood for a more suspenseful story, but still a romance and this checked both of those boxes. It was sweet and romantic with some spice, but also filled with so much mystery and suspense! I was loving all of the twists and turns in this book, it truly had me hooked from start to finish! It was a gripping story and I loved Evie and Lincoln. Their connection stemmed from long ago and though it was more of a slow burn, I couldn't wait to see how everything would finally be revealed.

Highly recommend diving straight into this one!

I've really missed reading K.K. Allen books.

Firefly Effect brings us a story about love, second chances with a touch of mistery.

Evelyn is a sweet girl whose had a tough life but she has been able to pull thru.

Lincoln is amazing, handsome, sexy, and the best with Lucy. Eventhough I was able to guess his mistery early in the story, I was not disappointed.

I love the secondary characters very much. Overall, great easy read, good ending as well.

The Firefly Effect by KK Allen is a thrilling romantic suspense story. While you try and solve the mystery of the Firefly Man, enjoy the sweet slow burn romance between Dr Lincoln Reed and Evelyn ‘Evie’ Vaughan. The mystery of who is The Firefly Man will grip you right to the end.

“Run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me, I’m the Firefly Man.”

The whole story is based on the urban legend of The Firefly Man. Evie has always been fascinated by fireflies and the spooky story her Uncle Patrick would tell round the campfire every summer.
Evie is fifteen when we first meet her, she has made friends with fellow camper Carley and has a crush on her brother Foster. When Carley is murdered the tale suddenly becomes very real.

The story then continues fourteen years later when another Firefly Man murder is discovered. Everyone in Bryson City is on tender hooks hoping the serial killer will finally get caught. Evie’s life hasn’t been easy and events that happened to her as a teenager still affect her. Now things threaten to turn her her life upside down again.

Evie has been under therapist JD Wright to help her with the trauma of finding her friend and she still feels guilty over what happened that night, especially how she couldn’t help Foster who was accused of his sister’s murder. When JD suddenly leaves without any notice, she has to face seeing a new therapist. This turn of events makes her consider it is time to end her sessions and it
doest help that Dr Reed is very handsome.

There is an immediate attraction and connection between the two so maybe her not seeing him professionally is a good decision. They slowly get to know each other and she sees another side to him when she meets his daughter. Lucy is adorable and wraps everyone round her little finger, she is smart and funny and will steal your heart like she does Evie’s. Lincoln is loveable and cares deeply for Evie. He is totally devoted to Lucy after difficult start as her father.

When The Firefly Man returns to their small town, the memories return. Lincoln helps and supports her when events trigger her suppressed memories. There are lots of twists and turns that will keep you intrigued and trying to work out everything. As we get answers to some of the questions, secrets and lies are revealed. Will the Firefly Man destroy their developing romance. Can they survive when other people start interfering and try to break them apart. Amongst the trauma and heartbreak can they have the HEA they deserve?

KK Allen has a lovely way with her books and she has a real talent at writing great characters that will stay with you. I liked the nod to her Waterfall Effect book, hopefully this will make you want to read it if you haven't already. I did guess a couple of the twists but there were still plenty of shocks and surprises, and the identity of the killer is cleverly hidden. This is a real page turner and you will get caught up in the mystery as much as the romance.

"She's gripped my soul and sank her teeth in, branding me hers for the rest of my days. Some might call it an unhealthy obsession-I just call it fate."

"She's a firefly, through and through. My firefly. The only light I'll ever need in the dark, cruel world." Firefly Effect, By K.K. Allen

This story was so beautifully layered and suspenseful and heartbreaking at the same time, and I just ate it up. The research that K.K. Allen puts into her writing is just so impressive to me. The way she weaved everything together in this story is out of bounds good.

This is Evelyn Vaughns story. She spent a lot of time growing up visiting her Uncle Patrick in a small town in the Appalachian Mountains. She loved to go to the local campground during summers and watch the fireflies. One night, when she was 15, a serial killer named the Firefly Man strikes for the first time. The victim is her friend Carly.

Fast forward 14 years later..tragedy strikes the small town again and starts dredging up everything she's worked so hard in her life to control. A new handsome stranger named Lincoln Reed shows up in the midst of it all, and he and his daughter Lucy are the one thing bringing light to her life. Little does she's know...the Firefly Man could be lurking closer than she thinks.

Listen, Lincoln and Evelyn are EVERYTHING!!! SHESSSH are they hot!!! 🔥🔥 I love the way he sees her. I love where her emotional journey starts and where it ends. 10/10 absolutely loved the way everything came together. I gasped multiple times lol. A must read in my opinion! @kkallenauthor #fireflyeffect #kkallen #romanticsuspense #smalltownromance #angsty #booksandchatswithnickib

I'm typically all about the romance and I don't read a lot of mystery or suspense. This book has all three of those things, but for once, it wasn't the romance that had me flipping the pages. It was the mystery, the suspense of "who did it" that had me anxious to get to the end of this story.

Campfire tales of the Firefly Man had been told for years by the residents of the Appalachian Mountains. They were just that - elaborate tales - until a young camper was killed in the woods and Evelyn Vaughn found her body. Now, 14 years later, Evelyn has suppressed many of the memories of that night and has tried to move on. When her long-time therapist disappears and is replaced by a handsome single dad, Dr. Lincoln Reed, Evelyn's life is once again turned upside down.

A big part of this story is a slow burn, forbidden romance and focuses on the relationship between Evelyn and Lincoln, but again, that's not what kept my attention here. As the mystery of the Firefly Man continued to unfold, I had so many theories about who it could be. While I quickly figured out part of this story (far before it came to light), I was wrong with every guess about the identity of the Firefly Man right up until the end. This story took so many twists and turns, and at one point, had me holding my breath and on the edge of my seat. While the romance itself is slow to burn (but definitely heats up), I found myself eager to get past the romantic elements just to get more clues to solve the mystery. That's a first for me!

This one was definitely a page-turner, and if you're a fan of romantic mystery and suspense, I highly recommend it.

Firefly Effect by K. K. Allen is a small-town romantic suspense stand-alone. I've been reading her books for a few years now, and she honestly outdid herself with this one! Every time I think there's no way she can top the last one, she always surprises me by doing just that.

Lincoln and Evie meet when he replaces her therapist that she's been seeing for years to try to work through finding her friend murdered by the lake when she was just 15. The mystery only grows when nobody seems to know who the serial killer is. The story is full of twists and turns, which kept my eyes glued to the pages, and the budding romance between them was really intense and emotional. I know 100% that this will end up being one of my top 3 reads of 2024! It's a must-read and, if possible, I'd give it a million stars!

She is always one of my go to authors so this book was a no brainer for me. We get a suspenseful thriller with oooooo so much steaminess between Lincoln and Evie girl. Evie has been struggling for the last 14 years with tragic events that shaped her future. Really the only people that know everything about her past is her uncle Patrick and her therapist, who both happened to be at the place that tragedy struck. J.D. suddenly disappears, leaving Lincoln to take over seeing his patients, only Evie isn’t to thrilled to open up that wound for him. Lincoln has also faced tragedy and he is trying to put an end to events that keep happening with Firefly man. Slowly the pieces start to come together more so for Evie, but also for everyone in their town. I love a good book that keeps you on your toes. Loved this book.

5 Star Review Firefly Effect by K K Allen

I haven’t read much from this author but what I have read, I have enjoyed.

I enjoy romantic suspense stories and this was a good example of the genre. From the start I was drawn into the story that Ma Allen wove and found myself on the edge of my seat whilst reading.

The moment that Evelyn Vaughn found a dead body in the woods, her life changed forever. When her new therapist, single dad
Dr. Lincoln Reed tries to bring her back into the light she struggles as therapy brings back the truth she has long buried.

From the first chapter to the last I was riveted to Firefly Effect. The twists and turns had me captivated.

I loved Evie and Linc’s story with a story with a difference with a burgeoning romance and a mystery to solve. Linc has come to the small town of Bryson to fill in for Therapist J.D., who has taken a sudden leave of absence. Evie decides she doesn’t need a therapist since J.D. is no longer here and doesn’t trust Linc. When she finds out Linc is a single dad and renting one of her uncle's properties, she thinks he might be someone to trust. Meanwhile, the firefly man might return to town to finish where he started. The author keeps you guessing who you think it might be, but you get blown away when you find out who the culprit is.
I received an arc for my voluntary honest review for NN Book Blog. If you love a second-chance romance with a few twists and turns that you don't see coming—and one certainly doesn't see that twist when it comes. I hope we get to see this book as a movie one day. I know I would go see the movie about this book. I loved reading the edge-of-the-seat suspense and the storyline.

What an amazing read.

I'm typically all about the romance and I don't read a lot of mystery or suspense. This book has all three of those things, but for once, it wasn't the romance that had me flipping the pages. It was the mystery, the suspense of "who did it" that had me anxious to get to the end of this story. Once I got to 30% or so I couldn't put it down. I needed to find out if my suspensions were true. I'll tell you, the Firefly Man killer was not who I thought. The outcome was so much better.

A must read in my books.

Holy….when I say you NEED this book, you NEED this book!!

Evie grew up hearing the tale of the Firefly Man being told around campfires. When her friend Carley is killed, it is said to be by the Firefly Man. But Carley doesn’t match any of the features of the other victims.

Lincoln is the new therapist in town. Or at least that’s what he tells everyone..

First of all, Lucy completely stole my heart. I could just picture her in my head and wanted to reach thru my kindle to love on her.

This book had me thinking twice, messaging the author with all my “OMG no!!” or “ooh maybe this!!” moments. The writing is freaking superb.

Not enough stars….An amazing story that will captivate you from the first word. I beta read this book and devoured it in a day. This is KK’s best work to date…it’s gripping, full of twists, will have you guessing until the final chapters and will make you question going into the woods after dark. Lol

I thought I had it figured out and then BAM…she took us on another turn. I highly recommend this book - it will leave you with a book hangover.

Evelyn is moving through life…she had a traumatic event occur when she was younger and is still trying to deal with trauma. Her mom is a train wreck and she’s been on her own for many years…luckily her amazing uncle has become her biggest protector.

Lincoln is a complex character…he comes across as too good to be true which made me question him. He’s an amazing single dad to Lucy - who Evelyn has an immediate connect to. He has his own secrets that will be revealed in due time.

Evelyn and Lincoln have an immediate attraction but don’t act on it right away. The tension and build up between the two is off the charts. They are a great team and work well together trying to solve the mystery…but can they survive?

The side characters add so much to this story and make you think about them and their behavior.

The last couple of chapters will have your heart pounding, will shock you and make your brain go a million miles an hour.
