The unexpected gulab jamun

Rate this book
A dark and warm gulab jamun is so different from a cold and fair vanilla ice cream, yet they go so well together. Kavita's relationship with her boyfriend Amit is somewhat like that. But when Kavita’s mother starts badgering her to meet prospective grooms for an arranged marriage, Kavita can't get herself to talk to her mother about Amit. For one, they have been dating each other for only a few months, and for another, they haven’t discussed the topic of marriage yet. Amit is currently on a business trip and Kavita is waiting for him to get back before she broaches the topic with him. In the meanwhile, she looks at the profiles of a few prospective grooms that her mother sends her way and plans to reject them based on her notions about an ideal groom.
What will Kavita do when she realizes that her boyfriend doesn't really check all the boxes on her ‘ideal groom checklist’ after all? And what will she decide when her mother introduces her to a man who does? After all, vanilla ice cream goes quite well with a sizzling chocolate brownie too!

This book caught my attention with its catchy and cute prerelease snippets. The characters compelled me to read their story. So, just like your favourite food craving, I couldn’t resist picking up this delicious concoction of romance, comedy and food.

Let’s begin with the story first. Kavita is a pretty, chirpy, and bold, albeit a bit moody (just like Mumbai rains) girl working and living alone in Mumbai. There she meets her old college mate, Amit, and they hang out as friends. Amit already loved her since his college days, but due to his insecurity about his weight, couldn’t ask her out. Wasting no time now, they quickly hook up and get together. Meanwhile, Amit gets promoted and is transferred to the US. He proposes marriage to Kavita and asks her to come with him. Vehemently denying, here is where utter mayhem breaks out. What does Kavita do? Who is the third entrant, Rahul, and where does he fit into their lives? Whom will Kavita choose?

This story iterates the fact that simplicity in the plot as well as writing always emerges a winner. I loved the smooth flow of the story, with its easy to understand vocabulary, making it a delightful reading experience. Apart from being a cute and funny story, what’s unique about this is the way it effectively weaves food into the plot. This is my first ever read that has 2 things I love the most, Romance and food. Right from the chapter titles (they are yummy food names) to food references to the process of preparation to the awareness of healthy food and food habits, it’s all so aptly described that you can’t help but feel hungry while reading this (keep a tub of popcorn ready). Amit and Rahul are both adorable, and I would hate to be in Kavita’s shoes. Kavita’s bout of weakness, though a little selfish, is so real, whether gulabjamun wins or the brownie. The everyday routine of our life is narrated in the most entertaining way. And the way amchi Mumbai rains and its life is depicted, I was feeling homesick all along. Clean, cute and fun, a story that will titillate your taste buds as well as your heart, it’s a must read.

We all have read different genres and tropes in the story but have you read a story that is delicious as food and also gives you some nice brilliant recipes?

Venuka's new book 'The Unexpected Gulab Jamun' is a story of tasty recipes and a love story that has an ultimate problem for metro cities. Where you are stuck between choosing your career and having a stable love life. Where nothing seems possible and yet you are trying hard to solve the issues. Sometimes you behave selfishly and other times you feel hurt.

Kavita and Amit have known each other since their college days and gradually they fell in love. Kavita's fear and insecurity always troubled her and also the family pressure to get married and settle was the next question. Amit always supported her and loved her immensely. But every day is not the same and every love story has bad days to experience. How will she overcome her securities and how will she decide what's right for her is the journey this book shares with you.

A simple, straight, entertaining story that will allow you to enjoy all forms of emotions and a twisted yet satisfactory end.

A sweet emotional read like enjoying Gulab Jamun with ice-cream

The cover of The Unexpected Gulab Jamun looked like a fairy tale romance, and the title instantly caught my eye because I absolutely love gulab jamun! 🍮
While reading, I kept craving gulab jamun with ice cream — my favorite! 🍨💛

The story is a light and emotional journey. I loved how Kavita’s character was portrayed — strong yet vulnerable, balancing life and love. And Amit’s character was refreshing — supportive, understanding, and not your typical cliched hero. Their chemistry felt real and heartwarming.

If you enjoy easy, feel-good romances with emotional depth and cultural charm, this book is worth a read. Perfect for those who want something light yet touching for a cozy afternoon.

⏩ Your favorite - Gulab Jamun or ice cream?

🍧The Unexpected Gulab Jamun by Venuka Goyal is a tale of two people who are complete opposites but like a jigsaw puzzle fit together nicely.

🍧 Interesting enough, right?

🍧The name of the book had my attention - I was so curious about it and how it was going to turn out and it was one of the best cute love stories I have ever read!

🍧The story revolves around Kavita - living in Mumbai away from her parents with her flatmate, Tanya.

🍧Kavita is bubbly, sweet, and, most importantly, a foodie - I cannot describe Kavita enough without the mention of food, especially Gulab jamun ice cream

🍧While on the other hand, Amit lives in Mumbai, far away from his parents.

🍧Amit is one of those boys who used to be called "fatty" in his childhood days, where he was worried about his weight but at the same time he also couldn't ignore his food - his escape from everything, but he manages to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle.

🍧Amit and Kavita have known each other for a while but it is only at present that they are in a relationship.

🍧While Kavita never learned to cook even though she loves eating, on the other hand, Amit can cook healthy and yummy food, so they both complement each other.

🍧But what happened when Amit got promoted to America? Will it be a long distance or will the relationship be over?

🍧I love all the food recipes in between - they were written so well that you will start imagining it. I love how Gulab Jamun (Kavita's favorite sweet ) has its aura to complement the story.

🍧 The most important thing about Amit and Kavita is that they choose communication over their ego, fights, or problems, which are important to every relationship.

🍧Tanya is a silent but strong supporting character in the story here!

🍧I love the writing - it has its charm, especially with all food recipes - I am a foodie, so I can relate.

🍧Go for it, you need this type of story once in a while!

In this book, the author narrates a contemporary love story around a common favorite dessert, gulab jamun. This is the story of Kavita and her love track. There is no antagonist in this tale, but how can there be a love story without a villain? Grab the book to find the villain in this story and how he or she affects the love in here.

This story is very simple, but very relatable. The common problem we live with is communication gaps or miscommunication. If we express our emotions to the wrong person or in the wrong tone, it becomes a problem. In this story, Fatty does not express his love to his dreamgirl in college because of his lack of confidence. Years later, Kavita also struggles with insecurity in her relationship and does not share her relationship status (dating) with her mother due to blunt hesitance. Kavita's mother has no problem with her love story or her boyfriend, but Kavita did not share it because she felt it was too early to share. In the same way, her partner was loyal to her, and she knew it. Her doubts about him were due to insecurities which she presumed, were not because of his behavior. As for Fatty, the hero of our story, Amit, he loved her from the first day of engineering college but did not express his feelings because he presumed his love proposal would be rejected because of his looks. Years later, he realized his girl gave importance to behavior, character, and not looks.

The entire story is entertaining, but there is one scene that has touched my heart. Rahul, Kavita's chocolate brownie, meets our heroine with attraction towards her and hope of a future with her, but it does not really happen. I loved his request after her rejection; he requests Kavita not to see him as an unknown stranger if they ever meet or cross paths in life. This request was painfully romantic.

In short, this is a lively love story that gets complicated because of human insecurities, which turns effortlessly comical.

A perfect blend of romance and comedy, Venuka Goyal's 'The Unexpected Gulab Jamun' is about the delicacies and fragility of modern relationships.

The book follows Kavita in her journey of love. Kavita is a modern Indian woman who falls in love with Amit, her old college friend who had been in love with her since their college days. The author has described Amit as a dark and warm gulab jamun and Kavita as cold and fair vanilla which are so different yet together creates a perfect sensation in our taste buds. Despite her love for Amit, Kavita couldn't confide in her mother about their relationship when she pestered her for an arranged marriage as they hadn't discussed it. So when she looks at the profiles of prospective grooms her mother sends, she finds herself in a dilemma when even Amit didn't fulfill all the criteria of her ideal groom checklist.

A light-hearted book with an ample amount of romance, comedy, and great food recipes, Kavita and Amit's story will melt your hearts. A fast-paced book written in simple English. The plot of the book is really interesting, and the cover is pretty and calming to the eyes. I especially loved how the author has done a unique job of weaving food into the story. The chapters are titled after the names of food.

The book talks about the challenges faced in relationships and how communication is the key to a good relationship. The love that conquers all obstacles is the love that stays. The complexity of modern relationships has been well narrated by the author. Also, the characters were well-developed. I loved how the author didn't make the characters flawless. Each person had their own set of flaws and insecurities. The uniqueness of the title and the simplicity of the plot of the book is what drew me in. Overall, the book was a simple and funny read.

"Wow! That’s another level of complicated that I had not even thought about."

Are you a believer in destiny? Do you believe that what is meant to be yours will be yours whenever it's meant to be? My answer is yes.

"The Unexpected Gulab Jamun" by Venuka Goyal revolves around the two protagonists Kavita and Amit. The title describes their 'sweet' relationship. However, any relationship comes with its challenges. Just like that, Kavita and Amit didn't have their path easy. Kavita, who was living all alone in Mumbai, was enquired about her marriage plans by her mother. Amit, her college mate, had not proposed to her, though he loved her for the fear of being body shamed. He went to the USA, and that's when he felt that he wanted Kavita in his life at any cost. So, he proposed to Kavita for marriage, asking her to join him in the USA. However, there is another character named Rahul in the story. So, who's he? What is his role in the story? Will Kavita marry Amit?

If I am being honest, it is the title of the book that tempts me to read it. It is written lucidly, making the readers fall in love with it. It is beginner friendly, with a cute cover to attract the young adult crowd. The story felt natural, and never did it feel 'fictionalized'. The author has narrated all the incidents in a very inherent fashion. The character design is favorable. The fact that this stands out from other books is the fact that the author has tried to blend in food names and referenced them in her book. My tastebuds were drooling. The way she has expressed many emotions is worth mentioning. I would suggest this to people who love romantic genres, foodies, and even to people who love both.

📚 The Unexpected Gulab Jamun

The book that I will suggest to you folks today is a charming story about love, tradition, and the unexpected decisions life forces us to make. Through Kavita, the main character, the book artfully examines the differences and complexity of relationships.

📖 In the novel, Kavita's romantic journey is followed. She developed feelings for her old college friend "Amit". Amit also loved her from his college days but due to his body weight, he didn't express his feelings at that time. After returning from the USA, he realized how much he wanted Kavita in his life. He then asked Kavita to marry him and move to the United States. Kavita also accepted his proposal but Kavita was unable to tell her mother about their connection when she begged for an arranged marriage since they hadn't talked about it. She therefore finds herself in a pickle when she reads the profiles of potential husbands that her mother sends her because even Amit didn't meet all the requirements of her perfect groom checklist. She is unsure of how to inform her about her boyfriend because they haven't yet talked about their plans. She will begin to question her decisions as she gets to know the strangers who could potentially be her groom. Will she be able to comprehend the emotions she has been going through? Will she ultimately be able to make the best decision? Discover the wonderful pairing of gulab jamun and ice cream by reading this book.

✨ The focus: Venuka Goyal's novel "The Unexpected Gulab Jamun" largely focuses on the difficulties of love, relationships, and the decisions people have to make while weighing cultural norms and their wishes.

🏆 My Final Opinion: Readers are taken on a trip through the complexity of love and decision-making in "The Unexpected Gulab Jamun". It serves as a reminder that love transcends a checklist and frequently manifests itself in the most unlikely situations. Just like vanilla ice cream pairs well with a hot chocolate brownie, life occasionally gives us flavors we didn't know we needed. The decisions we make when our emotions and traditions clash are fascinatingly explored in Venuka Goyal's book, which has readers turning the pages anxious to learn Kavita's final choice.

"The Unexpected Gulab Jamun" by Venuka Goyal explores the intricate flavors of relationships and the choices we make when it comes to love and tradition. The story follows Kavita, who finds herself at a crossroads between her blossoming romance with Amit and her mother's insistence on arranged marriages. Using the analogy of the contrasting yet complementary tastes of gulab jamun and vanilla ice cream, the author cleverly illustrates the differences between Kavita's unconventional love story and the societal expectations ingrained in her.As Kavita navigates the pressure from her mother to consider potential suitors, she grapples with the challenge of revealing her feelings to Amit, who is away on business. The narrative artfully captures the uncertainty and anticipation that come with unspoken intentions. Kavita's internal conflict is relatable, as she battles her own preconceptions about an ideal partner, ultimately discovering that love is not always neatly packaged within predefined notions.

Goyal's writing beautifully portrays the emotional journey of self-discovery, growth, and the difficult decisions that accompany it. As Kavita confronts the reality that Amit may not align with her initial checklist, readers are taken on a ride of introspection and personal evolution. The introduction of a potential groom who matches the "ideal" criteria prompts Kavita to reconsider her priorities, mirroring how sometimes unexpected choices can yield the most satisfying results.

This is a heartwarming exploration of love, family, and the delicate balance between tradition and personal desires. Goyal's skillful storytelling and relatable characters make this book a delightful read, reminding us that just as different flavors can harmonize in unexpected ways, so too can the complexities of life and love.

The book I'm going to recommend to you guys is about the protagonist of the narrative who is a young woman named Kavita, who must decide whether to follow her mother's insistence on planned weddings or pursue her budding infatuation with Amit. The author deftly contrasts Kavita's unique love story with the societal expectations instilled in her by comparing the flavors of gulab jamun and vanilla ice cream, which are opposite but complementing. According to the plot, the author chose the title "The Unexpected Gulab Jamun" for this novel.

Kavita and Amit, the two main characters in "The Unexpected Gulab Jamun" by Venuka Goyal, are at the centre of the story. Everything in this story took a huge turn when Kavita's mother asked Kavita, about her plans for getting married. So to know about what happened next, let's go into the story and flashback. Amit, her college mate had not asked her to marry him despite his love for her because he was afraid of getting body-shamed, but when he was in the US, he realised how much he needed Kavita in his life. He then asked Kavita to marry him and move to the United States. But there is another character named Rahul. Who is he then? What part does he play in the story? Is Kavita going to wed Amit?

This is a touching investigation of love, family, and the precarious harmony between custom and individual preferences. This novel is a treat to read, thanks to Goyal's deft narrative and likable characters, which reminds us that just as diverse flavors may blend harmoniously in unexpected ways, so too can the intricacies of life and love. Every individual has a unique set of weaknesses and insecurities. My interest was piqued by the title's originality and the book's straightforward storyline. The book was interesting overall.

The Unexpected Gulab Jamun by Venuka Goyal is a warm, closed-door contemporary romance set in Mumbai that delicately explores love and expectations.

The story follows Kavita, who compares her relationship with Amit to warm gulab jamun and cold vanilla ice cream different, yet perfect together. They’re comfortable and slowly falling in love, but things get complicated when her mother starts pushing her towards an arranged marriage.

At its core, the novel reflects on how relationships evolve under pressure. It thoughtfully tells the quiet doubts, tender moments, and internal conflicts that arise when personal desire intersects with cultural expectations. Without relying on dramatic twists or explicit content, the narrative focuses instead on emotional depth, subtle tension, and character-driven growth.

One of the most charming aspects of the book is its recurring dessert metaphor, contrasting flavors symbolizing different forms of love and compatibility. The Chapter names are on the names of dishes which makes the book so appealing.

The writing is simple, engaging, and rooted in everyday realism. Readers who enjoy slow-burn romance, family dynamics, and stories centered on self-reflection will find this especially appealing. It speaks to anyone who has ever questioned whether love should follow a checklist or whether the heart sometimes knows better.

Gentle, thoughtful, and culturally grounded, this novel offers a comforting yet introspective reading experience that lingers long after the last page.

What is meant to happen will happen despite all the obstacles in the way. The destiny which has been predecided will tell the outcome of all your struggles. Let's see if destiny is in our protagonist's favor or not.

This book portrays the sweet love story of our two protagonists Kavita and Amit and we get to know how they cross all the obstacles in their way to fulfill the love and dreams they had seen with each other. When Kavita's mother starts questioning her about her marriage plans, she is not sure how to tell her about her boyfriend as they haven't discussed their plans yet for the future. Her acquaintance with new strangers will make her doubt her choices. Will she be able to understand the feelings she has been experiencing? Will she be able to find the right choice in the end? Read this book to find out the great combination of gulab jamun and ice cream.

The writing style of the book is strikingly impressive. There are many twists and turns in the narrative that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I liked Kavita's character, she is depicted as a strong independent woman. All the other characters in the book are well sketched and much thought has been put into them. However, many familiar tropes of the rom-com genre have been applied in this novel too and the book could have been edited better. It is a fast-paced read. Many meaningful quotes have been employed. This gives the book an aesthetic look. I liked the book cover and title as it conveys the tone of the book. The narration is on point and the way the story is being told is just impressive. The ending was great but I felt that it could have been made more interesting. Readers who are interested in this genre should check out this book. An engrossing read!

The Unexpected Gulab Jamun already had me at the title, and the chapter names just made it better. Like tell me why there’s a chapter called Vegetable Pulao Initiation and another one called Mission Aloo Paratha? It’s chaotic in the best way and very on theme.

This story follows Kavita, who is secretly dating Amit while her mom keeps sending her prospective matches. The family pressure feels very real, especially when you’re trying to balance your own relationship and everyone else’s expectations at the same time.

What I liked was that it doesn’t just stay cute and simple. At some point, Kavita actually has to sit with herself and think about what she wants long term. And I appreciated that it wasn’t written in a very black and white way. Sometimes things aren’t about right or wrong, they’re about what feels right for you.

Overall, it’s a light, desi romance with humor, food references, and very relatable relationship dilemmas.
