There is a saying that 'everyone has a book in them'. But not many people are able to get it out. This practical and inspiring guide, written by a successful author whose novels are published by Bloomsbury, will help guide you through every step of the process, including: * First thoughts - Why do you want to write, and how can you do it? * Genres - Understanding the conventions of writing * Generating ideas - Find a concept that makes your book stand out * Structure - Create a compelling story arc * Character - What you need to bring your characters to life * Dialogue - How to write snappy and suitable direct speech * Setting - Understand the role of place and time * Drafting - How to get your work on the page, chapter after chapter * Redrafting - How to assess your writing (or get it assessed) and improve it * Submission - Agents, publishers, and how to approach them * Publication - Working with your publisher to make your book a success
Whilst this was a good basic instructional guide, there was nothing new to be found here for one who has read a variety of books in this genre. I liked that this also enclosed pointers on how to deal with writer's block, towards the book's close, but the majority of the former information was a repetition of things I have read before. A good book to begin with, if you are new to the world of writing guides, but nothing new is offered that could not be found in other similarly titled releases.
This is a good manual on constructing your novel. It does save you a lot of time making mistakes and is a good resource to refer too and build on. It would be nice to see what the second author has changed and added. I also find it strange there are so many typing errors in this, e.g. no capitals after full stops, a instead of 'are'. Considering it has been through so many editions and reprints, it is a wonder they haven't been fixed?
