Well, this is a first for me, a sequel that is better than the original.

This book felt much more confidently written, the pace was better, the plot developed more dramatically, no sudden gear changes that didn't feel quite right (that is not to say there are no sudden gear changes, but they worked as dramatic devices) and the plot did not rely on High School clichés nearly as much. There were some interesting developments on the loose ends from the first book too, character development I wasn't expecting.

This plot was more original than the first and had me wondering as I was reading what was going to happen. It raised suspicions, then hinted in other directions, very good feints to keep the reader interested. The characters came into their own, rounding out from the originals in book one, Scary Mary, and settling into what I thought were much more real people.

I love Mary: she is prickly and speaks her mind a little too often, but you can see the defensiveness that comes from, but she can also apologise. Rachel is also a fun character: the plucky sidekick, but with a bit more depth than that I am glad to say. Cy and Kyle were a surprise in this story, I won't say why. The only character I wasn't sure of was Gran, she was acting at extremes and I didn't quite get her justification for the way she was pushing Mary, but maybe that was just me.

All in all, a very good read. This is exactly what it says on the tin, a romping good paranormal YA. Don't expect deep sub-plots, or daring challenges to the status quo, that's not this book's aim, just a nice quick, distracting read. I eagerly await number 3.

Unicorn Bait was so incredibly delightful that I read it three times in as many months, and Scary Mary was also quite good. Not as cute and delightful, but very lovable in its own right. However, as a follow-up to Scary Mary, I thought this one wasn't that well done. I guess the whole thing with Cyrus really irritated me. We were set up in the first book to like him, and readers cannot be that fickle with characters that attracted us. And then it turns out that Cyrus is a big @$$ and we are supposed to like his brother, who was a huge jerk (and one that hits girls, even though under influence of ghost-possession, but still)? Eh.

Mary's nemisis, Vicky the cheerleader and most popular girl in the class, continues to harass Mary. When Vicky is injured, the only "friends" to visit her in the hospital are Mary and Rachel (Mary's best friend since little girls). Mary and Rachel volunteer at the hospital and hear of Vicky's accident. When Mary's special ability tells her Vicky is in danger, Mary works to save Vicky even though Vicky has been incredibly mean even forcing other children be mean to Mary. I like Mary's integrity.

Better then the first. If its possible this book was even better then the first. You can see Mary starting to really embrace her gift and use it well.

Mary is coming out of her shell a bit and learning to let people in. She is facing tougher challenges and kicking butt.

This story had me tearing up at the end. Mary has gone through so much and mixed in with the sadness and pain she is finding some friends that she didn't expect.

Great story and I am waiting anxiously for the next in the series.

A reasonable sequel to Scary Mary, though I had the niggling feeling that more could've been done in this book. Too much seem to be wrapped up too quickly. At times it had a short story feel to it. I know this book is only young adult market, still that does not stop the author adding any more to the plot. So in summary it felt more Scooby Doo than Harry Potter.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

Mean girl Vicky is in a coma and has reached out to Mary via dreams for her help. Crazy, right?

Maybe she wasn’t dreaming. Maybe she’d been abducted by aliens, and Vicky was their Pod Queen!

😂 Reluctantly, Mary agrees to help out the mean girl and save her from a shadowy creature that is out to get Vicky. One thing I liked was that Mary didn’t do this all by herself. She actually went to an adult for help regarding this shadow creature. It almost never happens in a YA book, but I do like when it does. Especially because Mary’s grandmother is awesome! Oh! And they now have a pet, Chowder, who is a ghost dog! 😂 He is the best though!

But back to Mary...

“I wish I had a normal life. Like I could sit here and tell you about a new dress, or a party, or something nice, and not about ghosts and Shadowmen. I try to stay strong. I really do, but I wish I didn’t need to.”

😩 My poor girl. I really feel for Mary and her abilities. But her duty to save the cheerleader, who she doesn’t even like, is very admirable. She is just that good a person, and I love that about her.

She’s still in a coma, which I’m not really averse to, but there’s still the Shadowman. What type of superheroes are we if we can’t save one airhead cheerleader?

Very true. Lol.

So after what happened in the last book with Cy pulling away from Mary, I was hoping that in this book they would work things out. They don’t. They’re still not together in this book and I am still not okay with that. I love them together! They were so cute! 😭 Oh, and not only that, but...

They’d bonded over trash-talking Vicky in the first place. It made her angry that he’d finally bent to the popular girl’s will.

EXACTLY! Hanging out with Vicky, Cy? Really? REALLY?! WTF! This is so frustrating and it just makes me sad. Especially because Mary still likes Cy.

Mary didn’t think Hallmark made a card that would cover how she felt about Vicky: ‘Sorry you were in an accident and put in a coma. Stay away from the boy I like.’ It didn’t even rhyme.

Oh but there is something else going on with Cy’s older brother Kyle, who I absolutely hated in the last book because he was such a dick. In this book, however, Kyle has changed. He’s no longer an asshole and he almost looks up to Mary now. I mean, she did save him from a murderous ghost, so yeah, I get it. But that ending and what it’s implying? Do not like 😬 I was really afraid there was gonna be a love triangle, cause we all know how much I hate those, but there wasn’t. However, the way her love life is going... I’m not into it, I gotta be honest.

But that being said, I really enjoyed this book as well. I liked the story and the irony of having to help Vicky. Mary is such a great character and I love her. I also love her best friend Rachel. And Chowder was the cutest! I’m still upset that Mary and Cy aren’t a thing, but I’m really hoping that will change in the future. I’m really enjoying the series so far though! It’s a lot of fun!

This gets 4.75 stars.. I felt like I had read this one but I just had read the first couple of chapters and not finished it, it was really good. It does at the end have a death of a animal but it was a ghost animal, still hits you in the heart though just warning... What I like about S.A. Hunter's books is the close net family of Mary, Gran and her best friend Rach it makes you enjoy the stories so much more and laugh at the craziness of these Ghost. Recommend to all who love thrilling ghost, family and friendships with some high school life lessons to boot.. On to the next one to see who Mary has to save.
In short Mary has to find a way to get rid of a Shadowman who takes the souls of the weak or dying a little at a time and with the help of Gran and some friends they figure out who is behind it and well you read it and enjoy getting thrilled like me... Gina Clabo

I’m really loving this series! Super engaging for me. I like the characters, and progression of the writing. I wasn’t expecting to like this series so much honestly. I got this book as a freebie for a dollar or something years ago, it was one of the first things I downloaded in to my reader like 10 yrs ago, a 25 year old girls choices in books are a lot different than a 36 year olds lol. So I was hesitant to get in to this, but I’m happy I did! I’m moving on to instalment #3 of the scary Mary series now with so much excitement honestly 😊

The first and second books are very entertaining, but by the third installment I lost interest. I felt like I was reading the same story over again. I also felt like some of the characters personalities changed.

I loved this series. The protagonist, "Scary Mary," is a real, three-dimensional teenage girl with "issues." I binged these books and own them all! Loved it. It may have YA characters, but adults will enjoy it too. It's not dumbed-down; it's a very well told story.

I thought that this book was good with it suspension and how it is structured the words in order that it creates a passage which make the next scene even more surprising when the next scene is shown. I recommend this book to people who like a little bit of horror and romance. This is a great book for long read to collect every evidence and put it into one big statement that the book can tell.

****MAY BE SOME SPOILERS***
The story I'm about to tell is creepy, exciting, and fun to read! This story is about a girl who can speak to ghosts and can hear them talk. She also has to help her arch nemesis by trying to defeat a shadowman. This book, Stalking Shadows by S.A. Hunter, is the second book in a series. In Stalking Shadows a girl named Mary can talk to, see, and hear ghosts. Vicky, Mary's arch nemesis, ends up being in a coma and is being attacked by some ghost like creature, who Mary has to defeat. This speech is about a character vs character conflict and some of the characters in this book.
The characters of this book are very significant. Without them the story wouldn't be as interesting. Without Vicky there would be no story, because she's in a coma. “Okay, here's the deal, I'm in a coma…” Without Mary no one would go after the shadowman. “She clutched the sword in both hands and stabbed into the chest.” Without gran Mary wouldn't know about the shadowman. "Because I wouldn't tell her anything about that stupid shadowman, she went and hurt herself so she could trap me and wear me down until I tell her what she wants to know. It's insane....” Without Rachel Mary wouldn't have a friend. “Her best friend joined her a few minutes later.” ….”How you doing?” Rachel asked.” Those are only a few characters but the reader can see how they are significant. All these characters have wonderful personalities that work well together to create an exciting conflict.
Vicky Nelson gets on Mary's nerves. Vicky and Mary butt heads quite often throughout this series, so far. “Vicky crossed her arms and stared down her nose at Mary.” “I can't believe you're the only person who can help me.” “And why would I want to help you?”.... “I said I don't know. You're the one who pulled me into your dream.” Even though they fight, that doesn't stop Mary from helping Vicky. Even if she'd rather not care at all. Towards the end Vicky is okay and Mary doesn't need to care about Vicky anymore.
In the end Vicky and Mary are still, sort of, enemies. Reading Stalking Shadows will make the reader want to be more aware of their surroundings, because of all the ghosts, and creepy feelings some readers may get when reading this book. This book was a great read! Without Vicky there would would be no story, without Mary no one would have gone after the shadowman, and so on. Stalking Shadows was suspenseful, creepy, and interesting. Make sure to read the first book of the series, Scary Mary, before reading Stalking Shadows. This will give the reader necessary background information, which will help them understand and enjoy Stalking Shadows even more.

My favorite clairaudient, Mary. Well, she's the only one I've ever read about but I have no doubt that she would still be my favorite. Mary has the perfect amount of sarcasm, wit, sass, however you want to put it, she's badass and awesome. She's just trying to survive high school while simultaneously having to listen to some ghosts.

Right off the bat we get my favorite part about this series: Mary's humor.

"No, we're dreaming."
"No, you mean me. I'm dreaming, and you're the monster in my nightmare."

In this book, Vicky is in the hospital, in a coma, from a car accident after a date with Cy (gasp!). She's able to reach out to Mary through her dreams to try to get help because there's something in the hospital feeding the life source off of unsuspecting patients. She's scared for her life, and as much as she hates to admit it, she needs Mary, even if they're basically enemies.

“What made you decide to volunteer at the hospital?”
“Well, I heard Vicky was there in a coma, and I figure this will give me access to her room so I can Sharpie a mustache on her without getting caught.”

Yes, Mary. You get your revenge for the nickname of Scary Mary and every other hell Vicky has put you through.

Rachel is still the greatest best friend who always knows exactly the right words to make you feel better. Especially when the guy you really like starts dating the girl you thought both of you agreed on that you don't like.

“If they were a couple, Vicky would’ve had T-shirts made. It was probably their first date, and she tricked him into going. He probably thought he was taking her grandpa to the airport or something, and she gave him directions to the movie theater instead, and since she already had pre-purchased tickets, why not go see the movie because both of Vicky’s grandfathers are dead.”

There is also more of Chowder, too, who is like the best ghost dog one could ever ask for!

“Chowder, get in your body. Get in your body now!”

Even if he is being unruly. Gran is also back with a force, helping Mary out even when Mary thinks she doesn't need the help. There's this wonderful scene in the hospital with Gran and I'd quote it, but it's too long and it'd give away how much fun you would have reading it.

This is another awesome 5-star book with a great cast of characters to leave you laughing and crying and begging for more.

(This review may contain spoilers).

Anyone who has read my review of Scary Mary will know that I really struggled to finish it because of personal reasons. Not so with this book. I was actually relieved to see the bullying take a backseat and it was interesting that Vicky reached out for Mary's help. I'm really curious to see if Vicky does in fact have psychic abilities. I'm figuring that she must do, if she was attacked as well.

Speaking of Vicky... she actually showed that there was more to her than evil cheerleader in this book. It was good to see a... well, less-nasty side to her, while still in keeping with her bitchy personality. On the other hand, I was disappointed that Rachel didn't have a bigger part to play, since she was definitely my favourite character in book one.

I have to say, Cy went right down in my estimation, but his brother took the place of my favourite male character. Well, actually, he tied with Max - who only became a favourite right at the end. Even though Kyle was a jerk in book one, I liked him quite a bit more in this book.

I was really sad about what happened with Chowder. I adored him as a character and he brought an element of fun to lighten the darker parts. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I love dogs.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in the Scary Mary series and this book managed to raise the entire series in my estimation. Normally, if the first book in a series is difficult for me to read, it doesn't exactly set a good precedent for the rest of the books. But it was very different here, hence the five stars. I think this might become a new favourite series.

More of a 3.5

In Stalking Shadows Mary deals with a much more bigger and badder (?) entity. But it's going after Vicky 'The Hicky'. Mary feels obligated to help but at the same time doesn't really want too because of who shes going to have too help. New romances come up and Cy gradually becoming more of a dick throughout the book. Which seems pretty hard but it is.

**SPOILERS***

OK fucking Cy like what the actual fuck?!?!?!?!?! This fucking bitch like how? Her fucking name is HICKY. AND ALSO LIKE SHES A FUCKING BULLY SHE GETS AT BELITTLING PEOPLE!!! Like I thought that he was going to be like finally a good guy that goes for the underdog but like no he gotta be basic. I hope like Kyle and Mary end up together forever and that once Cy sees that they have a thing start falling for her again. I hope he gets fucking crushed!! I'm so mad. and this book was hella depressing. It was good though. I like the first one more, probably because Cy wasn't a dick! ok that's all.

Just as good as the first! I love it! Mary and Rachel are at it again, this time to help terrible Vicky, who was in a car accident with still POS Cy. But now Cy's brother, Kyle, whom Mary rescued from his possession in the first book, is hanging around Mary. And let's just face it, he is really starting to redeem himself from the way he treated her in the beginning of the previous book. While their budding relationship is by no means prominent in the story, it is there and I really enjoyed their interactions throughout. Mary now has to fight a shadowman that feeds off of the sleeping ill in a hospital where Vicky is in a coma. Again, I loved the story, and the same quirkiness of the characters that we saw in the first book. I guess there will be at least another one from what I can tell, and I do hope so, and I really hope it will come out sooner rather than later. Great series!

These books are super short and surprisingly entertaining. I would have finished it sooner but I was obsessed with finishing my latest knitting project.

The first book was pretty funny while still being suspenseful as Mary tried to rid her new friend's house of a nasty ghost. This one was a bit more scary as Mary got the bejesus scared out of her by the Shadowman. This one was also a bit more uneven. I found her grandmother's bipolar attitude a bit weird towards the end. I got what Hunter was trying to say about the Shadowman and his affect on his victims, but once she started to shake that off, I didn't really buy some of the chatter around her allowing her granddaughter to pursue something that was clearly dangerous. But to balance that out, I like what's happening in Mary's love life. ;)

I'll definitely read the next one in the series. Gotta tackle a book club read first.

Cute, can I call a creepy, yet hauntingly charming story cute? This was the 2nd, and I'm 99% sure final book in this series. Do you call 2 books a series? Anyways, Mary is back again to help solve the mystery of the comatose-cheerleader-nemesis Vicki, and to save the day for not only herself but for others in need. Sounds like a Nancy Drew novel doesn't it? I'm pretty sure this is the 2013 version of Nancy Drew, "Modern Nancy".

I had a lot of fun with books 1 and 2 in this series, and I'm probably on a free ebook high, because if I would have payed for this I'm certain this review would be MUCH lower. Wait, rephrase that, book 1 was free, book 2 was cheap. But eh, I enjoyed it. It's nothing spectacular, but it's sure to make you smile.

I liked this, the sequel of Scary Mary, better than the first. The characters seemed fleshed out more, especially those with skeletal structures holding them upright. The story was less about high school bullies and more about a girl with abilities beyond those of her peers. I found that refreshing. Bullies may always be there giving them any attention seems to give them power over us. Let just get on with being alive and in our own power.

So Mary isn't so scary, neither is Gran. Rach is a bit scary. She needs to spend time as an intern at the morgue to see if she can hold her own.

Glad my husband pointed me to these books. They were fun. I do plan to read Unicorn Bait next.

Wow. These books are just incredible. The characters are unique, and the writing just paints the perfect picture. This book had my heart pounding, and also had me laughing out loud (Chowder has to be the best side character ever). This is certainly a must read!

All issues I had with the first book were fixed in this one. Normally I can predict what is going to happen, but this book threw me completely off guard (much different than the first one). Very well done! I will be snatching up the next book in this series as soon as it's out; I can't wait!

I loved the first book and I loved this one. It has all the wit, excitement, and heart pounding moments as the first book had, but this time there's heartbreak as well. She puts clues all throughout the book but so subtly that you never know until the very end! It's an OH YEA moment! I can't wait to read more and hope there's a lot more to come with this series. LOVE it!!!! Mary is definitely my kind of gal.
