يتناول كتاب (العلم للجميع) المشروع ٢٠٦١ الذي بدأ العمل عليه منذ عام ١٩٨٥، وهو العام الذي مرّ فيه مذنب هالي بالقرب من الأرض. يسأل الكتاب: كيف سيرى تلاميذ المدارس عودة المذنب في عام ٢٠٦١ حين يبدؤون عامهم الدراسي؟ ما التغييرات العلمية والتكنولوجية التي سيشهدونها في حياتهم؟ كيف يمكن للتعليم اليوم أن يُعدّهم لفهم العالم وآلية عمله، وكيف سيطوّر تفكيرهم النقدي المستقل، ليعيشوا حياة مثيرة للاهتمام في ثقافة يصوغها العلم والتكنولوجيا باستمرار؟

يُعرّف الكتاب مفهوم المعرفة العلمية، ويضع بعض المبادئ للحصول على التعلّم والتدريس الفعّالين، كما يعبّر عن الأفكار الأساسية في العلم ويربط بعضها ببعض دون أن يستخدم مصطلحات تقنية أو تفاصيل معقدة.

This book is an extraordinary achievement. The AAAS organized hundred of scientists to collaborate and decide what all Americans should know about science. This slender volume, containing only 230 pages, represents that knowledge. Of course, to unpack it into a form that could be systematically taught and learned would require much more material and time, but that is the very goal of this project: to reform K-12 education so that at the end of high school, American citizens have a solid intellectual foundation for whatever they choose to do in life. This book is a great start for all teachers, administrators, and policy makers. Begun in 1985, Project 2061 is still running strong, endeavoring to implement their recommendations.
