Rate this book
Some creatures are better left to the darkness …

From the moment he saw his first shade , Jimmy Hobart knew he was different. Special—that’s what his mother called him. He didn’t feel special, carrying a secret he couldn’t share with anyone else. Burdened would be more accurate. But it was his gift that eventually led him to Roni and showed him she was the one. He thought he could trust her with his secret. He thought he could tell her anything … He wished he had.

The presence on Woody Creek Lane wasn’t like the others he’d encountered. This one wanted something. Will Jimmy figure out what that is before it’s too late?

“The House on Woody Creek Lane” by Claudine Marcin is one of those novels that hit you with a few different layers of horror that literally grab you from multiple angles. This was the first time reading a novel by Marcin and wow, I genuinely enjoyed it!

Now, before I jump into my review, I wanted to go over some trigger warnings so everyone is fully aware. In “The House on Woody Creek Lane” there are instances of violence and gore against rabbits and deer. Don’t worry, she doesn’t describe exactly what happened but the aftermath to these animals is pretty detailed and graphic. I thought she did a great job not having to explain this violence as it happened but more of what was discovered after the fact. If this triggers you, please don’t read this novel.

Aside from that, I absolutely loved the creepiness of this novel right at the start. There’s something extra scary when dealing with children and ghosts. The first scene in this novel literally sent a shiver down my spine as it was so subtle and freaky that I was like yeah, that’s pretty damn scary.

Marcin’s writing style is solid as this was a classic haunted house novel with some nice demonic twists. Don’t worry, I would never spoil anything for anyone but let’s just say, if you love haunted house stories, super creepy ghost-inspired situations, possession, and demons, you’ll enjoy this one for sure.

I loved all the author, sports, and music references in this novel as well. I’m talking Stephen King, Dean Koontz, the NFL, and even METALLICA! I’m a huge metalhead and I smiled when I read that specific metal reference which is always great to read since it was a nice little surprise but yes, in yet another very creepy way.

There were some nice, horrific scenes that truly creeped me out as I thought this was a very unique way to deliver a haunted house novel with situations I’ve never seen done before. Kudos to Marcin for this as I love originality and just telling a unique story that hasn’t been done yet. Needless to say, I’ve read a ton of haunted house novels and this one stands out nicely which I very much enjoyed. There are even a few graphic illustrations that freaked me the Hell out while reading I never saw coming. It took the reading experience to a whole other level and I loved it.

The only drawback I have in this novel is that there are parts that dragged on a bit at various times. I felt it took a bit too long to get to the scary stuff and it would have been better if it was tightened up in that regard. Aside from the epic intro, the next creepy scene didn’t happen for a while and I get why due to fleshing out the story but I think if it kept that momentum from start to finish, this could have been a perfect read.

There are a few plot twists that blew my mind and the ending was fantastic. I’m talking suspenseful, wild, and pretty much edge-of-your-seat madness as everything unfolded. I wasn’t sure how this would all end but I thought it was perfect. I had one of those “drop the mic” moments where I was making faces and literally said “ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” out loud at the ending because it was so good and yet again, creepy as Hell. It was brilliantly executed to leave me in awe as to what transpired in the end.

I give “The House on Woody Creek Lane” by Claudine Marcin a 4/5 for being a well-written, unique, and thrilling haunted house novel. This is as original as it comes with some nice plot twists along the way, characters that are relatable, and lots of creepy situations that you’ll encounter. The only thing I didn’t like was that there were some moments when things were a bit of a slow burn but it does bounce back when it needed to and ultimately delivered nicely.

This was an Advanced Reader Copy I received in exchange for an honest review that I’d like to personally thank Marcin for as this was an awesome reading experience! When this is officially published on 8/31/23, I’d highly recommend you check it out because this is a novel I will remember for many years to come because it’s that good. I sssee you.

The book started strong with an eerie childhood episode from Jimmy Mason, the male protagonist. When Roni, his fiance and him buy an ancient house (the house on Woody Creek Lane) Jimmy feels haunted and finds hardly any sleep. What is going on here? You could have expected a great haunting house tale but the chapters were slow and repetitive. It simply took too long before some action takes off. Besides I didn't like the main characters too much. An okay story but far from the greatness of the cover. For fans of the author.

The House of Shadows...

THE HOUSE ON WOODY CREEK LANE by Claudine Marcin

No spoilers. 3 stars. This novel was a DNF at 60%. It seems like this year has seen so many unfinished books for me...

This story started off with a bang as we're told: Nothing you see in the dark can harm you...

Little James (Jimmy) Hobart believed it too... But you never know what's hiding in the shadows...

In the summer of 2001...

Jimmy discovered that he had a special gift, passed down from his maternal side of the family...

They called the gift The Light...

Some people burn brighter than others, and shades of people who have passed on are attracted to the light....

Fast forward...

Jimmy is now an adult. He and his fiance are buying an old isolated Victorian house on Woody Creek Lane...

A house filled with shadows...

This story started off with a great beginning but became a slog when adult Jimmy bought the title house. The plot became very murky, and I never really knew exactly what was happening.

There was something about an old abandoned root cellar that was the focus of local lore and an entity that visited Jimmy at 2:25 in the wee hours every morning.

Summing up, the story started off great but became a slog at about 60%, causing me to abandon the book.

Horror isn’t my usual genre and I was worried I would be too scared to finish this book. Though it was horror, I was never too scared (thrilled a few times) and ended up really enjoying the book. The House on Woody Creek Lane was a really great story with an even better thought provoking ending. Claudine has a way of writing where she leaves details throughout the book and brings them all together in the end. I’m very impressed with Claudine’s move from Sci-Fi to horror and enjoyed this book as much as The Glory Box series.

Even if you don’t like horror books, I would recommend reading The House on Woody Creek Lane, and promise it won’t keep you up at night 😊

With a very creepy and exciting start, I was keen to continue reading this spooky story. It was a little slow in places, including details that were not needed and the after the initial chapter, it took until about 30% of the book to really get going. After this, it was quite engaging and eerie, keeping me interested, so I was glad I continued with the story. I enjoyed the relationships between the main characters and was eager to find out what or who was behind the spooky happenings. Overall, a good read, but could have been edited more at the beginning of the book to keep the reader engaged earlier on.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only, thank you, and all thoughts are my own.

Wow.
When Marcin reached out asking if I would be interested in reading her spooky story. My first thought was YES! It's spooky season time and I thought this would be the perfect time to try it. Having never read anything by Marcin before I was excited to see what she had created.
I immediately started enjoying the story line about a family vacation that led to a little more. Then heartbreak and loss. Only to turn into hope and love.
The story plot is thrilling and yet realistic. The character development was good. And at times worrisome. I felt Jimmy and Roni were a good couple, that had a good give and take relationship. Take the house for example. They worked together, and made it a home. It was interesting seeing how the haunting took its toll on them both. Even a few days after reading the book, I’m still thinking about it.
With the semi large cast of characters. I have to say Coal the Cat was my favorite. He was full of attitude and at times, I felt he was more human than a cat normally was. Though as Jimmy is trying to figure out his “gift”, going through the challenges of life changes. This made him a quick second to Coal for me.
Overall the plot was spooky, the character well developed, and the story well written.
I was a little shocked by the ending. It was both happy and sad. It also felt completed yet left enough of a cliff hanger, if Marcin wanted to make another book. This and reasons that you will have to read the book to find out why. Is why I gave “The House on Woody Creek Lane” a 8/10 rating.
If you're looking for a spooky haunting story that is appropriate for both young adults and adults. That will add a little umph to your halloween. Then I highly recommend that you check out “The House on Woody Creek Lane”.

What a great story! Quick read, keeps you guessing and turning the page! My only criticism would be that I wanted to know more back story on some of the characters! But a little birdie told me that I might get that info in future books with returning characters !😉 It IS a stand alone book in itself though! Has some elements that remind me of Joe Hill, whom I adore!

I love these kind of stories! Jimmy sees a “shade” when he is a young boy. He told his mother that he saw her father at the bedroom door when they went to visit her mother for the first time. She told him he had passed away. She shared that she, and now Jimmy have this gift of seeing “shades”, people who have passed. Moving ahead in time, Jimmy (now grown) and Roni are looking to buy a house before the get married – the house on Woody Creek Lane! The setting is perfect. It’s out in nowhere and appeared to have been abandoned as it needed a lot of repairs. Jimmy felt something calling him to this house. Things start happening in the house and property. Loved it. I received an ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review.

I was delighted with the TWO endings of the book (not alternates). The author masterfully wove a story peppered with gradual details of mysteries and unexplained phenomena. If you are in to the “who dunnit” genre, this book is for you!

I am not a person who usually reads spooky/scary books because I am a scaredy cat, but this book was amazing!!! I was given the opportunity to review a copy provided to me by a book group I am in to help the author get reviews. The story sounded interesting so I gave it a shot. I am so glad I did, this book had me wondering what exactly was causing things, what was going to happen next and kept me on edge while reading it. The story and suspense was carefully planned and built and the ending was perfect, it also left it to where possibly more could come in the future with the house, which I would definitely read if there was more. 5/5 excellent read!!!

I was instantly hooked in the beginning of the book- the main character Jimmy has the gift of seeing shades (ghosts and other nasty creatures) since he was a child.  Now as an adult, he and his fiancée are house hunting and purchase an old abandoned house.  As they are fixing up the house,  shades visit Jimmy.  At this point, occasionally, the book gets a little difficult to follow however, the storyline is suspenseful and still is very interesting.  The author does a very good job with providing details throughout the book and bringing them all together in the end.

I highly recommend this book. I was rooting for the young couple and their cat, while trying to determine who or what was behind all of the evil. If you're a fan of the genre and love a good mystery with a chilling conclusion, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.

This book definitely has creepy haunted house vibes throughout, not horror per se, but more leaning toward paranormal thriller.

It took me a while to mesh with the authors writing style, especially during the 40-60% read mark. It became slightly repetitive...... However understandably so because of how the story develops.

I prefer my haunted house stories to be more horror-based. Maybe I've been spoilt by extreme horror and splatter Punk? That being said this is definitely a book I'm going to let my 12 year old daughter read as I think she will really enjoy it. I'm not suggesting this book is ya but maybe marketed more as new adult and not adult horror.

The House on Woody Creek Lane by Claudine Marcin...there are homes you instantly fall in love with and then there are houses that choose you. The House on Woody Creek Lane, unfortunately for Jimmy and his fiancee, Roni, are selected by the house as its new owners. Jimmy is special, he's had the gift of seeing shades (ghosts and other nasty creatures) he was a child so, he immediately knows something is off about the house, but he goes along for the ride since his fiancee falls in love with the spooky old house. and then, quicker than a jackrabbit, Jimmy's troubles are just beginning.
The House on Woody Creek Lane has some truly creepy moments, but the story was a bit disjointed. certain parts were a bit wordy with unnecessary details and could've used a good editor to clean up the manuscript. in spite of this, the book shows promise and I'm very curious to see what Ms. Marcin comes up with next.
recommended.

"Nothing you see in the dark can harm you." Or so little Jimmy is told. Flash forward to him as an adult with a spiritual gift called The Light and a creepy new house, and Jimmy isn't so sure anymore. The House on Woody Creek Lane is a horror novel that hits you from multiple angles. Its so much more than just a simple haunted house story. The book is very atmospheric, setting an eerie tone from the beginning and continuing on as events escalate. There were several plot twists that made my head spin, along with several epic "gotcha" moments where the author really got my heart racing. This is a thrilling horror story that demands to be read at night with the lights off....if you dare.

House on Woody Creek Lane was a fun read. Claudine's style of writing has a way of really putting you in the book, both in a calming and sometimes scary scenario. Definitely looking forward to more from this author!

I won this book thru Goodreads, and it was autographed with a personalized note from the author, which I thought was pretty awesome, thank you... I'm torn about the book. It started off strong, but fell off a bit in the middle. It was still a quick, easy read thou. Some of the writing was detailed and descriptive, which I love, but other parts felt quick and forced. I didn't love the ending, I like books tied up in a bow with no loose ends, and this one doesn't really finish the story. There are some twists, but I will say I saw the biggest twist coming about halfway thru. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I did figure out the shade about midway. I will definitely try another book from this author. Thanks again for the personalized autographed book!

Just finished reading "The House On Woody Creek Lane"

This is a book about Jimmy and his girlfriend Roni. Strange things happen after they make a decision that will soon be regretted. This book had creepy parts throughout the whole story keeping it entertaining all the way through. Claudine kept me reading. My stepfather recently passed away which delayed the ending for me. But the last three nights I was finally able to sit down and continue enjoying what I now consider her best book yet so far. Although it is a horror it did have some funny parts. My favorite was the Mathis rule, you'll find out about that later on in the story.
This book is something of a Stephen King story. So if you are like me and enjoy a good King horror. Sinister fairytale horror that is... Then this is one book you will not want to miss. It was indeed well written.

And to Claudine,

Again, I thank you for letting me be the first person to read and review your work. I am truly honored.

Always,

𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑺𝒚𝒏𝒐𝒑𝒔𝒊𝒔: Guy who sees ghosts thinks he's losing his mind in his new house.

𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘: This is one of those books where it feels there was a required word count. And it wasn't overly descriptive where an entire page is dedicated to building the scene around you, it was just long drawn out moments. I liked the slow build of him questioning his sanity and losing time, but then the last 50 pages hit and it's GO GO GO and the end felt a little random when compared to what was sold to use leading to that point.

𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: Support local authors when you can. It's a fine book but was expecting something a little more haunted house and less insane asylum.

There were creatures of the Light, there were Shades, and then, there were those from Darkness. Shades were not terrifying. Jimmy never felt scared around them. But, the ones from Darkness… that was a completely different story.

Jimmy and his fiancée Roni “bought” the house on Woody Creek Lane. Jimmy felt that something was off about the house, but didn’t say anything about it. Then, Roni started to change.

This was spooky and quite sad in the end. The reveal of the mystery behind Millie, the realtor, in the end, was well done.

There are novels that you read and enjoy and rate picking up another for your next read. This book allows me to pause and give thanks to writers who make the reader's world an enjoyable place. This is one of those books that begins with a background story, enhances it to the present slamming it with a scary ending. I wouldn't dare spoil the book by telling you anything else except to read this one, especially if you enjoy horror.

It’s an enjoyable horror story but I felt like certain elements were left unfinished, particularly with the party/beach connection and hints about the home that that were never really realised except for one brief story at the very end which didn’t seem to fit what was going on. Still, it’s entertaining enough and a quick read

I received a free arc and my review is purely my own opinion.

This haunted house story ticks all the boxes. We have the couple moving in, the house described wonderfully (is our author also in real estate?), and a couple we care about. The suspense builds at the right pace and the questions appear, not to be answered until the reader has had a chance to guess at what's going on. In the end, it all comes to suitable and very satisfying climax. Five-star work from Claudine Marcin.

I received this book in return from an honest review.

I found this book really really good gripping story at the start. I thought it would go down a different direction but it got much darker. This book would’ve got five stars from me but for the ending this is the second book in a week that I have finished Where it just stops there’s no conclusion does Jimmy get compensation for the house? What happens with Abaddon now? I feel disappointed and a little cheated in the ending.

From the moment I started to read The House on Woody Creek Lane I couldn’t put it down. Trying to figure out who or what “the Shade” was that Jimmy felt and heard after moving into his new home with Roni gave me shivers up and down my spine. A definite must read!

This book was okay. Nice to have a guy as the terrified main character. Otherwise, the plot seemed to be a case of "been there, done that". It was an easy, quick read and the author does convey a delicious creepy feel.

This is a nice little spooky read - well written and flows nicely. However the ending felt a bit abrupt/rushed. I would like to have a bit more background as to what happened to make these events unfold.
