Okay, I want you to remember that the 1980's were a different time. Our romance stories were a bit more alpha male, sometimes quite over the top. Our hookups often involved bruised lips and 'just short of rape' encounters. He comes on strong, she resists at first then melts into his arms.
Romances now are different and have evolved with the times. Nora is no exception. She has kept up with the times and her books now show much stronger heroines who don't fall insta love. Especially not with a guy who is emotionally abusive. But this book is from then not now.
Our hero is a troubled magician, our heroine is a realist. She wants to know how a trick is done. Their romance is quick but then its over when she goes back to her life. So she thinks. Then she learns he is planning to Harry Houdini a big trick that could kill him. Do you remember that he died after performing a water escape? If not watch the movie. The old one with Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh was made in 1953 and the actors were married at the time. Great romance!

Half sex novel, the other half is supposedly about 2 strong willed people, who really have weak characters because they keep on giving in to each other. Not my kind of novel.

OMFG I'm so done. I can't stand to read another one of these Language of Love books. These stories from the 1980s started out fresh and tender, now they're sickly sweet and all the things I hate are the things that are showing up in every. single. story. I give up.

I was actually quite surprised to enjoy this book. It's the first true "romance" novel i've ever read as I felt it's important to expand my horizons occasionally. I chose Nora Roberts as i'm already a big fan of the J.D. Robb books and figured if there were any romance author I was likely to enjoy, it would be her.
It wasn't an amazing story; it took some time to get used to the somewhat lowered stakes compared to books I usually read, it occasionally tended to the histrionic - particularly the protagonist's over-the-top reactions in some cases, and one in particular.
The book itself was quite short, which no doubt added to the feeling of "rapid escalation" that may well excusable as a trope of the genre; someone more experience than I would have to weigh in there. It seemed to me however that the two main protagonists went from strangers to "oh-my-god-obsessed-how-can-I-live-without-them" with all the speed of a supercar reaching 60.
Still, the characters were interesting, the erotic content well-handled and the overall story kept me entertained. I'm quite satisfied with the experiment.

Unfortunately, This Magic Moment has fallen under the "bad early works" list by one of my favorite authors. This Magic Moment was so cringy, I skimmed the last half of the book. The characters were cliche and the dialogue was over the top cheesy.
I had the biggest issue with the the main character, Ryan. Her reactions were contradictory and over the top. After knowing Pierce for a couple of days, she claims to be in love with him. But a day later, when he wants wants to sleep with her, she says no because she doesn't know him. How can you know someone enough to be in love with them, but not enough to sleep with them? After they do finally do the deed, she freaks out because she woke up alone. She keeps up the rant when he shows up fairly soon after with a valid excuse. At that point, I could't take much more and skimmed to the end. I'd say this is one you can skip.

For a book by Nora this was B.O.R.I.N.G
I must say this book just dragged. I thought it was going to be mysterious and magically and it just fell flat.

I actually read this book for the first time years ago, don't remember when exactly, but I was as captivated by the romance then as I am now. I got the print copy of the book, so read it again. I liked both Ryan and Pierce, they were such compelling characters. Ryan was someone I could identify with, making a name for herself in her life and profession. I often felt like bashing Ryan's father on the head for making her feel unworthy, but I liked their resolution in the end. I feel like it's a good step in their relationship. I found I liked both aspects of Ryan, Ryan herself, and Miss Swan, as they both developed confidence in their settings, and I liked seeing her grow in both aspects. Pierce was kind and sweet, exhilarating and dynamic, and I liked his character as well. He was an honorable man, which caused some conflict between them when Ryan expected him not to be, but that is what made Ryan Swan fall in love with him. I liked the storyline of how they were pushed together and worked through struggles together. Whenever it seemed like they were on even ground, they were thrown off kelter (heard that expression somewhere), and they had to find their balance again. I thought it compared to some other romances Nora Roberts has written, of a couple falling in love, and one of them works in a field that includes a mortality rate. That was certainly a big theme, and plot line that entered the book midway and came to full culmination at the end. When I read it for the first time, my heart cried for them and still does at that moment when I reread it, but there is always a moment when I am fully on Ryan's side, against the escape. Ultimately, as I read the last scene, I am able to fall in love with their story again, but Pierce is who he is and will do that escape. Ryan knew as much and chose to stay with him because the fear of the escape and losing him is greater when she's not with him. I would like to see how their life takes off, if they have a wedding with Ryan in a white dress (and something old, new, borrowed, and blue) with her father walking her. I'd like to see that kind of ceremony for them, it kind of fits for them, I feel. Another thing was seeing their love story continue in Vegas as they spent more time together. It's a common setting that NR uses in some of her other books, of couples falling in love in Vegas, and L.A. All in all, nice book!
Oh, and I liked the book cover above. Whenever I'm reading, I search for the characters' descriptions so I can imagine them in scenes. The pictures of them above were heart-melting—he looks so irresistible, and she looks beautiful!

yes i’m torturing myself and reading from the oldest books to the newest.
this one was better, i liked it. the ending with her leaving was bit confusing but otherwise it was good.
again fmc fell in love after second time of seeing the mmc.

Storia carina, scritta molto bene e scorrevole. I protagonisti sono molto passionali, come da Nora Roberts' style, e ben caratterizzati nonostante il romanzo non sia lungo. Idem per gli altri personaggi che ruotano attorno a loro.
Titolo in italiano abominevole. Continuo a rimanere basita dalle traduzioni che la casa editrice tira fuori... dopo tanti anni ancora non ne vengo a capo.

Worried they would split
Pierce and Ryan's love was obsessive and magical. It drew them both together and kept them both functioning. Ryan learned to be fearless and love Pierce as who he is. He got to marry her and have offspring a good contract for each of them.

I've a theory about the french Harlequin branch who feels necessary to rebrand Nora Roberts' books as Xmas romances even when the story is set in spring. Original title : « The Magic Moment ». French title : « The winter's guest ». WHY ??? Especially since another french edition exists, titled « The storm's guest », so they have NO EXCUSE.
Well, when you know it, you don't let yourself fooled (otherwise I wouldn't have read it in early summer) but what if you're not aware yet ?
Anyway. The book isn't reponsible for its publisher's choices and is a nice read... as long as you aren't expecting an xmas romance.
Originally published in 1983, the book has aged well and its age wouldn't even be noticeable except for some details, like smartphones' absence. With an original setting (magic shows's world), the novel really carries the special atmosphere the characters are in. And if the tv-show's planning is nothing more than a background element (at the end of the story, we still don't have a clue about what really is Ryan's job as a producer) but is often spoken of, reminding characters have a life apart their blossoming romance.
Despite the instant attraction between Ryan and Pierce, their story revorlves more around feelings. And Nora Roberts shows it well. There's complicity and tenderness in their relationship, but also some problems that emerge as soon as they begin to know each other better. In a novel where we share Ryan's amazment towards Pierce's illusions (and, no, neither her or us will learn any of his tricks), their story, on the opposite, is bound in reality. Everything isn't pink and smooth. There are compromises to find.
Exchanges between Ryan and her father are touching, too. It's not an ideal father-daughter relationship either, but not a disaster. They will work it out, slowly. Also, the side romance with two sub-characters is supercute and they could had their own whole story.
In the end, if only the setting is original, it's a well-crafted and well-paced novel, still worth discovering forty years after its release.

Wie fand ich das Buch? Mit Nora Roberts geht der Leser nur ein geringes Risiko ein und so konnte mich dieses Buch auch nicht enttäuschen. Die Kulisse ist wie immer gut gewählt, Magie, attraktive Charaktere, eine romantische Stimmung. Kleinere und größere Stolpersteine, bis sich die Protagonisten in den Armen liegen. Hier gibt es kein langes hin und her, man weiß von den ersten Seiten an, wer zueinander gehört und ist sicher vor Überraschungen.
Bemerkenswert? Es gibt einen sprechenden Raben und einen Butler, der ein wenig an Lurch aus der Addams Family erinnert.
Gab es etwas zum Nachdenken und/oder Nachforschen? Wer sich noch nie mit Entfesslungskünstlern wie Harry Houdini beschäftigt hat, könnte diesen Roman zum Anlass nehmen, ein wenig zu googlen. Gibt es in Las Vegas wirklich keine Uhren? Einer Behauptung, der ich natürlich auch nachgehen musste.

I was prepared not to like this
I was prepared not to like this book. Even with it being a Nora Roberts book! I don't like magicians - don't like watching their shows and don't enjoy watching interviews with them. They all seem to caught in their own hype and showmanship and act as if they have bought into their own carefully curated mystic. Pierce, one of the main characters in the book who is a quite a famous magician and I admit to being prejudiced against him and his whole attitude but his introduction and collaboration with Ryan Swan while she is a producer on his upcoming TV debut. Ryan has a lot to prove to her father, CEO of Swan Productions and her employer not to mention probably what feels to her to be her biggest critic and certainly was never up for a Father Of The Year Award at no time in her life but the things that turn me off about magicians seems to have the opposite,effect on Ryan and before the ending of this book I was actually rooting for them as a couple. I was surprised at how much I got into this story and yet at almost the end I was almost back to my original prejudices of Pierce. The ending was both enjoyable and gave me something to think about regarding my feelings about Pierce. On the whole, in real life, I'm still not a fan of magicians, lol

I was very disappointed in this book. I have read Nora Roberts before. I know that she is the queen of the chicklit novel. But ususally there is a semblance of plot, a bit of mystery. Not with this one. It centers around a magician named Pierce, of course, brooding and mysterious, and Ryan, a young lovely producer, who works for her unattentive father. Well, right off the bat, the chemistry between the two characters ignites. And before you can say "jack rabbit," they are in bed. Any professionalism in either character's careers is out the window. The source of the conflict boiled down to whether she could face the magician doing a seriously dangerous trick, and whether her father would trust her judgment. Then they made love every four or five pages. I listened to this in the car....and listening to that many passionate scenes as I rolled into the college parking lot....not comfortable.

This is the last of Nora's books from 1983. The time period fits right in with the remarkable tv run of David Copperfield. The characters, the "fragile" Ryan Swan who has spent her entire life trying to gain her father's love and attention and Pierce an illusionist with a difficult childhood and a love of difficult escapes. You can definitely see how Nora's writing has improved. Gone are the days of the "professional virgin" and instead you have a woman who not only knows what she wants, but acts on it. She says when and she says where. Again, we have the peripheral couple in Bess and Link and again we have the ultimatum that could be the nail in the relationships coffin, but these plot points are actually enjoyable and when Ryan makes her decision - you don't feel like her request was unreasonable, but you do see how it was impossible to end any other way. Kudos to Nora for making magic.

May 3, 2022Strangely, this is the first Nora Roberts book I’ve read and I really liked it. Maybe because I’ve read so much erotica these past few years (ahem, strictly research for my own novel, of course), I found this sweet and charming and was surprised that reviewers said it reminded them of 50 shades. It was pretty wholesome in my book, but it’s all relative I guess. I loved Pierce’s character. I loved his quirkiness and struggle for self control and admired the way he was constantly amiable despite people always trying to push his buttons. Nora did an amazing job writing him as a magician and blending the lines to where the reader even wonders if he is truly magical in different scenes. I loved the dreamy, surreal like atmosphere of certain scenes.
The female love interest, Ryan, had some depth and a real flaw (temper); she was a strong, organized, talented woman who stood up for herself. The only thing I didn’t like about her was her name! Certain scenes I got confused about which character was talking. I like unisex names but there are so few female Ryans out there that it kinda threw me off.
If you’re able to read a book from the 80s with lightheartedness and not try to overthink it too much, then I’d say enjoy the ride, I did.

No pensé que diría esto alguna vez sobre un libro de Nora pero menudo bodriooooooooo, he acabado leyendolo en diagonal para terminarlo. Por el año supongo que es de los primeros pero bufffff ha sido como una escena de sexo después de otra y si no tenían sexo, estaban pensando en el sexo y de vez en cuando se acordaba de meter un par de diálogos.

Esta novela empezó muy bien, buena trama, personajes con carácter, buen desenlace y sin embargo, el final no me gustó.
Sentí que le faltó algo a la historia, porque terminó de manera abrupta.
Otro punto a mencionar es el cambio de ambiente, muy buen manejo en las descripciones.
Una novela común, con elementos diferentes siendo uno de estos: MAGIA.

The characters were more and more interesting as the book continued, and not just the main characters, I really found myself liking all of them. The story worked very well and I found myself enjoying a romance book. I immediately took my Man Card from my wallet and was forced to cut off a small corner, I hope my friends don't find out. This was a good read.

I agree with the other reviews I read - when I keep in mind the time period, I liked it. By modern standards I had issues. But I do try to take into account the time in which it was written so 3.5 stars
