A comprehensive interpretive history of the Weimar Republic. Schulze admirably details the achievements, motivations and impact of most of the era's political figures while putting to rest some of the enduring, simplistic views that have made their way into popular historical interpretation.

His explanations of the statecraft of Gustav Stresemann, the surprisingly consistent support of constitutional principles of Hindenburg, and the ultimate failures of Brüning and von Schleicher to recognize and halt the rise of national socialism highlight a work of incredible depth.

I know of no similar treatment of the Weimar Republic in English.
