Once awoken the showdown is inevitable with humanity facing the deadliest threat it has ever known. The sci fi mystery unfolds as local folk, farm animals and wildlife inexplicably vanish after quarry blasting exposes a labyrinth of caves and tunnels. Lethal extra-terrestrial power and technology has evolved beneath the small town into something far more sinister.
The unbelievable becomes plausible and the impossible emerges as a mind-blowing reality. Alien abduction and murder ramps up the horror of what lives beneath.
The Moreton Scientific Investigation team strive to find the Achilles heel of the most frightening and deadly predator the planet has ever seen, while battling political will and military agendas that threaten their own lives.
The first first book in this brand new sci fi mystery thriller series, Ben Sharman heads up the talented team of forensic scientists, drawn into the unthinkable world of alien invasion and potential takeover of planet Earth. First contact with alien life in their own back yard. Terrifying alien action adventure at its very best.
3.5 I would say. There were some aspects I liked, and some not so much.
It's a sci-fi adventure story i would say- an alien lands on Earth, hibernates, comes out to feed and reproduce, while the army and various scientific/medical people try to track and study/kill it. There's plenty of fodder to be killed off and the descriptions were gruesomely satisfying. Parts of the book from the alien's perspective i also enjoyed. Characterisation wasn't too bad but one main character was super annoying (Amy) and I couldn't actually fathom why her and Ben were together. She seemed like hard work! Some descriptive sequences were a bit of a slog (and there were a few of them- in terms of character backstory and scenic). I was also quite surprised that the main characters took all that was happening in their stride. They had discovered a violent freaking alien and there were no surprise from any of them, it was like just another day at the office.
Overall, it was OK. I didn't love it, but I also didnt hate it.
Rob Nesbit has crafted a story that skillfully combines science and horror like a master. Imagine the xenomorph from the Alien films, but more intelligent, increasing its crafty deadliness.
And in the character of Ben Sherman, the main protagonist, Nesbit has created a worthy successor to the crown of Dr. Bernard Quatermass who first introduced the world to the combination of deduction mixed with hard science as well as horror.
There are a number of typos in the book, but not enough to distract you from an amazing tale of scientists faced with an unbelievably vicious foe.
Like the author spent several months at the FS College so familiar with this beautiful part of England. Not a great fan of sci-fi but enjoyed the book apart from the American spellings. Will I read the next one.....YES !
Beneath is a gory sci-fi feast - and that’s just what Nesbitt’s ancient alien did on its hapless victims! Creative and graphic, it’s sure to pique the interest of sci-fi and horror lovers alike, but be prepared for an ending that will have you grabbing the next book!
I enjoyed this book.mostly because it was a totally new and different depiction of an alien. Plot and characters developed nicely, keeping the reader absorbed in the action. Recommended for any fan of sci-fi and suspense.
I quite enjoyed the book but found it a bit predictable especially the ending..Which shouldn't have happened seeing as (spoiler alert) antibiotics were the downfall of the creature.. I might try the 2nd in the series though...
