Her Hidden Empire space opera sequence, published by Gollancz, starts with the novel 'Principles of Angels'. Her Shadowlands science fantasy duology is published by Angry Robot.

The science fiction is good. But I was not at all comfortable with the Aztec stories which always focused on blood sacrifice as if there is nothing else about Aztec culture worth mentioning.

A great collection of short story science fiction with an extensive range of themes, Fenn delivers in every story and should have something for both new and existing readers of her work. Short story world-building can be troublesome, as one has fewer words to build on, but again, Fenn writes engaging characters and settings. To breifely name a few: "The Path to the Sun" gives an interesting glimps into an alternative historical fiction, "What You Came For" leaves one with an eerie feeling, and the story "Sin of Omission" debuted in this collection, albeit my penchant for near-future dystopias leaves me wanting more.

racconti molto disuguali ma ce ne sono parecchi carini.
Jaine Fenn è una scrittrice piuttosto nota, specialmente per la sua serie "Hidden Empire" (che non credo sia stata tradotta in italiano). Questo libro è una collezione di racconti scritti da lei in vent'anni; ciascuno termina con una breve postfazione nella quale racconta come è nato. Il genere dei racconti è molto vario, e lo stesso posso dire della loro qualità, anche se magari sono io che ho gusti particolari, visto che per esempio quello che ha vinto un BSFA è tra quelli che mi sono piaciuti di meno. Recensioni monoriga:
▪ The Path to the Sun: Cosa sarebbe successo se Cortez fosse stato sconfitto dagli atzechi, e il loro impero fosse da qualche secolo in guerra con gli inglesi? 5/5
▪ Crown of May: Non mi ha detto nulla. 2/5
▪ The Chatterslee Circle: Non costruite una cospirazione nemmeno per scherzo! :) 5/5
▪ Paying for Rain: Ben costruito, ma freddo. 3/5
▪ What You Came For: Un altro racconto scritto in seconda persona. Credo che non abbia colto il punto. 2/5
▪ Death on Elsewhere Street: Il finale è bello, ma tutto il resto non mi è piaciuto. Per esempio, perché la protagonista sta scappando? Come è nata la divisione tra le persone? 3/5
▪ Fear Not Heaven’s Fire: Racconto interessante e un po' inaspettato. 4/5
▪ High Ground: Parte in modo lento e noioso, ma l'ultima parte lo risolleva. 4/5
▪ King of Pain: Bel colpo di scena finale. 4/5
▪ Twilight at the Change House: I racconti che più o meno si incrociano sono strani ma interessanti. 4/5
▪ Down at the Lake: Non conoscevo la storia di Odette (mea culpa) ma la riscrittura è ben fatta. 5/5
▪ The Sky Weeps, The Earth Quakes: Bello! Mi è piaciuto come l'autrice è riuscita a evitare il finale che ci si sarebbe aspettati. 5/5
▪ Liberty Bird: Non ho capito perché abbia vinto un premio. 2/5
▪ A Dormitory Haunting: Racconto strano, tangenziale al canone holmesiano. 4/5
▪ Sin of Omission: Molto bello. Dovrebbe far parte dello Hidden Empire: quell'universo è un ottimo sfondo per la storia. 5/5
